I’m in a very uncomfortable place. As someone who has successfully lost weight and maintained it for 5 years, it’s strange for me to watch the scale go up and up during this pregnancy. I’m not necessarily freaking out about it or attempting to prevent it. I’m in more of an observer position. I eat healthy foods when hungry. I indulge in cravings. I stay active. Then every month I go to the doctors and see what the scale has to tell me. This week, it shyly whispered…. "You’re up 20lbs"
I wasn’t shocked or upset. Actually, I was surprised at how little the number bothered me. I’ve weighed what I weigh now NOT pregnant. Honestly, it’s what I weighed in high school. It’s pretty much what my average weight was when I started my 15 year yo-yo dieting cycle of hell.
It’s really not the number I’m having the biggest issue with. It’s the feeling of looking in my closet and having nothing to wear. Nothing feels right. Nothing looks right. I’ll put on shirts that look like they should fit and then struggle to get my arms in the sleeves. My coats all feel tight through the shoulders. None of my jeans fit, not because of my baby bump, but because of my new, thicker thighs and larger *cough* back end.
I’m confessing this because many of the feelings I had before losing the weight are coming back. It’s not that I don’t KNOW I’m pregnant. I know it and I LOVE it. It’s that sometimes your brain plays tricks on you. Sometimes the fact that a pair of jeans doesn’t fit can throw you into a self-medicating food binge. It effects you mentally and emotionally. This is the forgotten aspect of weight loss.
I forgot. I’ve been maintaining so long, I really did. This pregnancy is reminding me.
I remember feeling so defeated in college when I couldn’t find anything to wear that fit for graduation. I remember throwing a pair of jeans back into my closet when I couldn’t get them past my knees. I remember almost being in tears when getting clothes as a gift for the holidays because I knew, there was no way "that" was going to fit me.
If you’ve never felt any of these feeling it may seem ridiculous to you but this emotional part of weight loss is very real. It’s what causes a lot of people to continue the yo-yo dieting cycle. It’s not that they, we, don’t know what to eat. Most of us have read every diet book under the sun. We know what to do but this emotional mental aspect prevents us some how. Our brain gets in the way. We feel sorry for ourselves and turn to food to feel better. At least I did.
Experiencing all the body changes that come with carrying a child are reminding me of these feelings. I’m going to be honest, not fitting in any of my clothes is effecting my motivation and desire to eat healthy. But I’m embracing the gain. I’m doing my best stay conscious and motivated to be the healthiest I can while fighting these emotions, as irrational as they are

What’s the saying? I’d forget my head if it wasn’t attached? That’s how I’ve been feeling lately. How did I do this while working full time? Seriously? Maybe it’s the holidays combined with the pregnancy, who knows. I’m not into making excusing for myself but seriously… I’m so scatterbrained anymore!
I was suppose to post the entries in my VitaTop Recipe contest LAST Wednesday. Better late the never I’d suppose but man I HATE missing deadlines.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Heat oil in small skillet. Sautee onion and zucchini about 5 minutes, until soft. Add Craisins and cook another minute or so.
While the veggies cook, tear bread and muffin into bite-sized pieces. Turn off heat and add to skillet. Add chicken broth and stir until moistened.
Put into small baking dish and bake 20 minutes. (I think it might have benefitted from another 10 or so in the oven, but I was running out of time on my dinner break).
Makes one serving (249 calories, 8.5g fat, 10g fiber) (5 ww)
1. Thaw Golden Corn VitaTop according to directions and toast to taste.
2. While the VitaTop toasts, spray skillet with cooking spray and heat over medium/high heat.
3. Beat together the egg and the bacon bits, reserving a pinch for garnish and pour into skillet. As the egg cooks fold it over on itself so it will fit on top of the VitaTop. Cook until the eggs are not runny.
4. When the VitaTop is done toasting, prick the top with a fork all over and drizzle 1/2 of the maple syrup over the top. Do this slowly so it can sink into the holes. Reserve the rest to pour on at the end.
5. Top the syrup soaked VitaTop with the egg. Drizzle the reserved syrup over the top and sprinkle with the reserved bacon bits.
Then enjoy! :) The whole process takes just 10-15 minutes and is simple enough to cook on a weekday morning. To reduce the calories and fat consider using two egg whites in place of the egg.
SLICE IN HALF. ADD A SCOOP OF FAT FREE COOL WHIP ON ONE HALF AND TOP IT WITH THE OTHER HALF OF THE VITATOP MUFFIN.
PLACE IN A ZIPLOC BAG AND PLACE IN THE FREEZER.
FREEZE AT LEAST 2 HOURS AND ENJOY.
YOU CAN MAKE A BATCH OF THEM SO THEY WILL BE READY FOR YOU TO ENJOY
WHEN YOU NEED THAT SPECIAL TREAT. ENJOY!
Microwave for a few seconds (time will vary depending on microwave), to soften. Stir to combine and spread on warm Deep Chocolate VitaTop.

I used regular peanut butter, substituting low fat is always an option. I could also see this being delicious with almond butter!
To make this particular treat, I microwaved a frozen Golden Corn VitaTop for 25 seconds. Then I soaked it for a couple of minutes in a mixture of:
1 egg1 tbsp almond milk1/2 tsp vanilla extract1 tsp cinnamonCook the VitaTop for 2-3 minutes per side on a stovetop pan or griddle (medium heat). I topped it simply with butter.

The first time I tried VitaminWater Zero, I was less than impressed. VitaminWater Zero Mega-C (Grape Raspberry) was not good! But since then, I've had 2 great experiences with the Naturally Sweetened Lemonade Flavored Water and more recently, VitaminWater Zero Recoup (Peach Mandarin). This led me to try yet another variety, VitaminWater Zero Go-Go (Multi Berry).
This flavor is also going in the WIN column. This tastes like a light fruit punch, but more importantly, it DOESN'T taste like Stevia!
NUTRITION FACTSThere is a delicious berry/ fruit punch flavor, plus this flavored water beverage is refreshing and a little sweeter than some of the other VitaminWater Zero varieties. Each 8-ounce serving provides no calories and 100% of the daily allowance for vitamin C, 40% for vitamins B3, B5, B6, and B12, as well as some electrolytes. The sweeteners used are Stevia, crystalline fructose & erythritol.
sponsorThis also has and 10% of the DV for vitamin E and 100 mg of ribose in it which, the label said should be that sumthin' sumthin' to help you get to your daily finish line. I don't know about all that, but I do know that this was refreshingly good, and well worth the $1.25 that I paid for a 20 ounce bottle. I would definitely buy this flavor again and it's now one of my favorite varieties of flavored water.

In fact, the beauty of Vita Coco is that it's made with 100% pure coconut water from young, green Brazilian coconuts. (Okay, so this variety pack also includes 100-pure coconut water with splashes of pure fruit -- including tangerine, peach mango, pineapple, and passion fruit -- for 100% pure, flavorful goodness.
The coconuts that are used to make Vita Coco drinks are young, green coconuts -- each one cracked by hand -- from northern Brazil that have an average age of about seven months, which is the best age to extract coconut water because it's still fat-free.
Hydrate Naturally with Five Essential Electrolytes
Sure, you may not be a marathon runner, a football player or Tour de France winner, but your every day life is hectic enough--you should be hydrated while you live it. Go ahead, get hydrated and remember that life is a sport!
Loaded with the five essential electrolytes that your body craves -- including potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium and phosphorous -- Vita Coco has what it takes to keep you hydrated and refreshed throughout your busy day.
In fact, each serving of Vita Coco has more electrolytes and 15 times more potassium than the leading sports drink, and more potassium than two bananas (about 700 mg of potassium is in each 11.2-ounce serving size). These electrolytes work to keep the body cool, help boost poor circulation, replenish your body's fluids after exercising, and aid in the detoxification process while boosting your immune system.
This cholesterol- free, fat- free and pucker-free drink can also help soothe an upset stomach, and when paired with a healthy diet, it can even promote weight loss. All this from a single, natural ingredient, and without any artificial sweeteners or added sugars.
Variety of Original, Tangerine, Peach Mango, Pineapple and Passion Fruit Flavors
By adding a touch of 100% fruit to Vita Coco, the concept of hydration perfection has been redefined. This variety pack includes four Tetra Paks of 100% pure coconut water, plus two Tetra Paks each of tangerine, peach mango, pineapple and passion fruit flavors. Each flavor offers all the essential benefits of the original Vita Coco, but with a splash of 100% pure fruit.

The perfect solution for an on-the-go lifestyle, the 11.2-ounce Tetra Paks give you just the right amount of Vita Coco to get you through your next task. A convenient peel-away opening makes it easier than ever to access the great taste and benefits of Vita Coco wherever you go.

The Vita Coco Story One evening in a Manhattan bar in February 2003, childhood friends, Ira Liran and Michael Kirban, were speaking with a couple of girls they had just met from Brazil. When asked what they missed most about their country, one of the girls, without hesitation, answered "agua de coco." Coconut water, she explained, is the most nutritious and delicious drink in the world. The rest, as they say, is history. Two years later, the two successfully brought Vita Coco to market in a handful of stores along the East Coast. Since that fateful night in Soho in 2003, Vita Coco has not only carved a new market in the non-carbonated beverage business and redefined the alternative sports beverage category, but has also created the one of the fastest growing lifestyle beverages in North America. Now available in over 10,000 retail stores nationally, Vita Coco is a major beverage brand with a cult-like brand loyalty. |

Yesterday I was glued to twitter, facebook, texts, phone & email running vicariously with our racing Tribe members.
(Yep. I totally did a link love extravaganza and deleted it. I was pretty damn confident even in my thoroughness I missed *someone*)
I was BEYOND inspired by all of you & amazed at the health issues so many of you overcame (guest post? you know who you are!) to finish your races.
So many of you (see parenthetical above) would not be classified as mainstream ‘healthy’ & yet kicked ass & took names! proved the classification WRONG yet *again* yesterday.
Which brings me to my question for YOU:
How do you define HEALTH?
Is it merely the absence of disease or, as it is for me, is it so much more?
(If youre checking in via a reader there is a video below. It is sixty seconds long. I achieved brevity. Please to thank me in the comments. Whether youre checking in by reader or *not* please to mock me in the comments for introducing myself at the start. thank you.)

VitaminWater flavored water beverages are sweetened with a combination of natural sweeteners and hence provide no calories. So far, I have tried 2 flavors, VitaminWater Zero Naturally Sweetened Lemonade Flavored Water Review which I liked a lot, and VitaminWater Zero Mega-C (Grape Raspberry) Review which went in the opposite direction on the 'delicious scale.'. So I decided to try another product as a tie-breaker so to speak, VitaminWater Zero Recoup (Peach Mandarin).
This water has 100% of the daily value for quite a few B vitamins, and according to VitaminWater, this drink was created to help you cope with whatever life throws at you - whether it's the kitchen sink, a curveball or even a shoe from a member of the foreign press. I'm not sure this helped me pass my exams, but I noticed the flavor and refreshing nature of this beverage for sure. The peach flavor shone through and was well balanced with a hint of mandarin. The flavor is a bit sweeter than what I've experience from other VitaminWater Reviews, but it's still very good - MUCH better than Skinny Water Peach Mango Mandarin (XXX-Detox) Review.
sponsorEach 8 ounce serving of VitaminWater Zero Recoup (Peach Mandarin) provides no calories, fat, sugars or protein. There is 100% of the daily value for vitamin C, vitamins B5, B6, B12, and 40% for vitamin B3. This water is sweetened with stevia, crystalline fructose, and erythritol. I paid $1.89 for the 20-ounce bottle which was a bit more expensive than some other flavored waters, but I would definitely buy this again.
I like flavored water because I drink more liquids that way, and I would definitely buy this again.

Shape Ups from SKECHERS are designed to get you fit while you walk, work, shop, and more. Shape Ups have as much a place in your life as your boots, sandals, and dress casuals, and can retrain your muscles, helping you walk with a positive impact. Used properly, Shape Ups change the way you approach your daily activities. Used regularly, Shape Ups will enhance the way you feel and look; muscles get toned, calories are burned and your posture improves.
Three Reasons You Need Shape Ups: 1. Stronger You 2. Healthier You 3. Easy Exercise Routine Three Reasons You Want Them: 1. In Style 2. Portable Power 3. A Brand You Trust |
The design technology behind Shape Ups changes the way you walk.
As we move through our lives, we typically walk on hard surfaces, which places stress on our knee joints and lower back. People who are required to stand for their jobs feel the impact on their bodies the most, and don’t gain the benefits that come with all that activity.
The goal with Shape Ups was to simulate walking on soft ground. SKECHERS has turned hard surfaces into comfortable ground through revolutionary technology designed into the framework of the shoe. The core of this technology is in the dynamic rolling bottom, the soft foam insert under the heel, and the dual-density midsole. These three elements work together to give you the feeling of walking on sand or luxurious pile carpet--regardless of the actual surface. Walking on softer, uneven surfaces forces you to engage muscles not normally used when walking on hard ground. Not only does this strengthen your muscles, but it also increases blood flow and reduces the impact on your joints and lower back.
Designed to improve your life by changing the way you walk, Shape Ups feature a unique soft kinetic wedge insert and dynamic rolling bottom to simulate walking barefoot on a giving surface that gives such as sand. With the comfort of Shape Ups, you will feel your heel sink to the ground as you step, roll forward as your weight shifts to its center, and push off with your toes. This movement will result in stronger leg, buttock, back and abdominal muscles as you stabilize your steps.
Barefoot walking simulation on soft ground
Get in the Routine
1. Kick Back: Stand upright and place feet parallel and hip distance apart, balance centered. Roll your weight onto the back of the soft foam heel – hold for a count of five and then back to the center. Do not lock knees or tip backward. Stretches calf and hamstrings. Repeat 5 to 10 times.
2. Rock and Roll: Stand upright and place feet parallel and hip distance apart, balance centered. Roll your weight forward so you are balancing on the underside of your toes – hold for a count of two, then slowly rock back to the soft heel – hold for a count of two, and then back to your center of balance. Do not lock knees or tip backward. Stretches calf and hamstrings, warms up Achilles and ankles. Repeat 5 to 10 times.
3. Roll and Rock and Roll: Follow the Rock and Roll stretch, but alternate feet so one is rolling to the toes and one is rocking back. Repeat 5 to 6 times.
4. The Lean: Place your hands on a wall, parallel and slightly above your head. With one leg in front of the other and your arms forward, press with your palms as if you were leaning on the wall. Keep your back leg straight and your front foot on the floor, then bend the front leg and lean forward by moving your hips toward the wall. Hold for a count of five, then repeat on the other side. Stretches calf and Achilles. Repeat 5 to 6 times.
