Why I volunteered to gain 35 pounds.

…because this kind of weight just feels right.

34kb Why I volunteered to gain 35 pounds.

If you thought I planned to gain 35-lbs via pie eating, then shame on you!

But I would like some pie, yo.

It’s my latest purchase, ya’ll. A 35 pound kettlebell. I’ve been working with my 25-lb KB for a little over 2 months. At this point, some (but not all) of my workouts with the 25-lb KB are getting too easy, so I upped the ante to 35-lbs.

I’ll definitely be at this weight for awhile. Big time challenge! The weight is heavy, but I’m still able to maintain good form on all movements, so it’s a go. My first workout at this weight was yesterday. It made the deluge of sweaty funk come very quickly.

My armpits achieved maximum funkiness in less than 15 minutes. I wish I could insert a scratch ‘n sniff effect right here so you could fully experience the kettlebell-inspired smell of my armpits. Isn’t that what you want?

I quickly get bored with the infamous Kettlebell swing, so I don’t swing every time I pick up the ‘bell. I tend to use my KB’s in a different kind of way; for things like the weighted split squat, single leg deadlifts, tricep extensions and Kettlebell Carries.

If you’re on the road to kicking the fat, remember this: cardio will reduce your dress size, but only weight training will give you strong, sexy curves in all the right places (including the booty!).

I’m Down 2.4 Pounds On Day 1 of the Shakeology 3-Day Cleanse

Despite the delicious holiday foodstuffs still lingering in the kitchen, I consider those treats not authorized for access — even those last slices of sweet potato pie ((sigh)).

I’ve had my greedy fill (how ’bout you?), but now it’s over until I come up with the next high quality excuse to chew on cookies and pies. It’s time to get our asses back in gear and end this year on the right stomach foot. Are you with me? What’s your game plan for this week? You gotta have plan.

Yesterday (Dec. 26th) marked Day #1 of my Shakeology 3 Day Cleanse, and it went well. I’m ridding my body of those delectable holiday food-fest toxins, recharging, and doing what needs to be done. booyah!

I’ll post my full cleansing results later this week, but here’s a rundown of my food choices that led to the 2.4 pound loss as of Day #1:

Breakfast: Chocolate Shakeology (made with a banana)Morning Snack: Orange wedgesLunch: Large salad with Italian dressing, baked salmon — a very generous portionAfternoon Snack: Side salad, appleDinner: Greenberry Shakeology (made with strawberries)Evening Snack: Raw sweet potato chips (I just sliced ‘em up) with light sea saltDrinks: Lots of water, 4 cups green tea with Stevia

In general, dropping pounds fast during a cleanse is enough to get a suspicious man’s panties in a bunch as he wonders if that’s truly a safe approach, but when you take a look at my nutritious eats on the Shakeology Cleanse, you can see why it’s genius. Calories are kept low (yet in an acceptable zone), and the food choices are nutrient-packed and smart. I can’t quite explain it, but the combination of Shakeology, salads & green tea is some kinda miracle worker for cleansing power. Plus, I’m NOT sacrificing necessary protein (that salmon was delicious).

Let me make it clear that of those 2.4 pounds lost, not all of it was 100% fat. My colon is being cleansed, toxins are being flushed and I’m releasing extra water weight as well. People I know personally, as well as other random cleansers, have reported 7-10 pounds lost by Day#3. I lost 7 pounds during my last cleanse earlier this year. I can’t wait to post my full results on this current cleanse! And by the way, I am in no way sluggish, tired or hungry. I’m keeping it healthy, baby.

A Tale of 20 Pounds

I couldn’t wait to see Denny yesterday. We met for breakfast at King’s in Kittanning, even though we were hoping to find some dive in East Brady, which probably exists, but not on Google.

Denny’s a long-time friend of ex-Larry, and they’d been on a “Sideways”-ish tour of the NY and Canada wine country over the weekend. Denny is also my friend, and the thing about friends when you get divorced, they either pick one side of the couple to side with or they throw their heads back and say, “I like you both. I’m not gonna choose or get in the middle.” Denny’s that friend.

When I walked into King’s, Denny was seated in a booth facing the entrance. When he saw me, he stood up, gave me a big hug, and said, “Hey, I was expecting that waif of a woman in a pink shirt! Your face is fuller. You look great!”

What I heard: “Damn, Lynn, you gained weight again!”

The last time Denny saw me I looked like this:

This is what I look like now:
My lowest weight was 125. I am now 145. Twenty pounds in two years. The gain has stopped, and I know why it happened (surgery, menopause, divorce, move, stress), but still…

I sometimes want to be that waif again.

At least I think I do.

And yet….

1. When I gained 10 pounds last year after my knee surgery, my body felt better. I have severe osteoarthritis, and when my body-fat levels were low, I was in a lot of pain. I’ve not been in as much pain at 145. Hmmm….

2. I like my current food regimen and I don’t want to change or reduce amounts at this point. I eat healthy foods, I’m still a vegetarian, but I’m no longer a food Nazi. I police myself, don’t get me wrong, but I let a baguette or full-fat cream cheese or a piece of my daughter’s banana bread fall through the cracks sometimes. I confess: I’m human.

3. This gain has stopped (I’ve stayed the same weight for 3 months) and I’ve fell in love with exercise again. It was a rough summer. My brother’s seizures and my pending school schedule had my undies in such a bundle there was no way to detangle them. Now that things have settled down and I have a better understanding of what’s what, my exercise schedule and nutritional intake are front and center again.

I learned that in times of stress, that when I stay focused on my health, my principles will not fail me. In the last three months, I’ve made the best decisions I could and stayed conscious of everything I put in my mouth. My food plan – culled over the last six years – has become rote. And that is what I think is the key to success. When the diet you choose becomes second nature, and you allow for some latitude and yet reign yourself in when you go too far, you are there. You get it.

My body has a few more curves than before. I’m no longer a waif, and that sometimes makes me sad. But I feel better physically. I’m strong and I look…eh…well, I’m still working on that positive. I look OK. I fell in love with being skinny. Waifishly skinny. That’s a psychological thing I’m still working out.

Today I was driving down Route 28 on my way home from Claire’s taekwondo class. A man – who I’d guess was in his late 60s – driving a late model (1980s?) black Jaguar passed me, and he was wearing a safari hat like the Man in the Yellow Hat from the Curious George books. There was what looked like a book mark hanging from his rear view mirror. He was singing. I imagined the book markish thing was some kind of saying or verse that he liked that kept him grounded. I thought about what mantra I might hang on my rear view mirror, what words would remind me that I am OK here in this moment, at 145 pounds, happy to be alive and singing in my car.

I’m open to suggestions. What mantra do you live by? What words give you strength?

The Juice Lady's Turbo Diet: Lose ten pounds in ten days-the healthy way!

The Juice Lady's Turbo Diet: Lose ten pounds in ten days-the healthy way!

In this book, you’ll discover not only the principles behind juicing, but the recipes to help you serve up freshly made juices and delicious raw foods as part of a lifestyle to lose weight and keep it off for good. There are five main reasons why the Turbo Diet works so well:

  • It supplies an abundance of nutrients that satisfy the body. Cravings often diminish and vitality soars!
  • Live foods and juices detoxify the body. Toxins can actually cause us to gain weight. It’s true. And they can make it very difficult to lose weight.
  • Fresh veggie juice and raw foods alkalinize the body. Actually, the body stores acids in fat cells to protect delicate tissues and organs making it tough to get rid of this stuff. But listen upâ??the body will actually make fat to store acids when it runs out of storage space.
  • The Turbo Diet is energizing. Fatigue vanishes; and our work-outs get easier.
  • If you’re counting calories, this program is low in those little energy units, devoid of bad carbs, and high on life-giving nutrition.

The Juice Lady’s Turbo Diet serves up freshly made juices and delicious raw foods recipes as part of a lifestyle to lose weight and keep if off for good! This plan works so well because it feeds the body an abundance of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and phytonutrients. You can use everything! The body doesn’t need to shuttle off harmful acids or toxic additives into fat cells. So voila! You’re losing weight while hardly trying.

How Did You Gain Those First 10 Pounds?

It was 1998. I was young(er), sexy, and weighed in at 134 pounds. I didn’t know the meaning of “muffin top” and I ate whatever I wanted while sporting the flat stomach look.

But then something happened.

My job put a corner store in the lobby of the building. That bastard store was filled with snack items and baked goods and sodas for slurping. So every day after eating lunch from the grill (like a burger or something), I indulged in a bag of crunchy Cheetos.

And every day… for a whole year… I indulged. (oh wait, I already said that part)

At the end of that year I had gained 10 pounds. And this senseless eating-style was the catalyst for other “beyond-greedy” events and lethargic, non-exercise behavior. I was on my way to a 51-pound weight gain over the next few years. That is, until I took control and began exercising and counting calories (although I don’t count anymore) starting in 2006.

Of all the sh!tty foods that I still adore in moderation, I refuse to let the crunchy Cheeto enter my Food Trap. I don’t like what it represents: my first 10-pound gain that eventually spiraled upward until I reached 185 pounds.

Never again.

So how about YOU. What’s the story of your first 10-pound weight gain? And how did you take back control?

Leslie Sansone - Walk Away the Pounds - Super Fat Burning [VHS]

Leslie Sansone - Walk Away the Pounds - Super Fat Burning [VHS]This 52-minute video from 1992 combines low-impact and step aerobics with strength training. You keep the heart rate elevated for fat burning and cardiovascular conditioning while working the muscles. Jayne Poteet leads a class of fit exercisers of varying ages through a workout that's as tough as you want to make it, depending on how heavy your weights and how high your step. The aerobic moves are basic--no patterns, no complicated footwork--so beginners can manage the workout. The strength moves are sometimes combined with aerobic moves and sometimes isolated, and they are done slowly for safety and effectiveness. This is a well-designed workout except that the largest upper-body muscles (chest and midback) are left for the end (they're most efficiently worked early in a workout) and the shoulder presses start behind the neck (they're safer starting in front of the shoulders). Poteet includes both upper- and lower-body strength moves, but emphasizes the lower body. You'll need a barbell, dumbbells, a tall (14-inch) step, and a medium step. --Joan Price
