Weekend Quote: Take Action

Hey guys, just popping in for a quick weekend quote. I’m feeling kind of blah, as my lower back is giving me trouble. Funny thing is, it only hurts when I’m sitting. Walking, running, playing, working out, I’m fine. Sitting at my desk for hours, I can barely move without wincing in pain.

Ugh. Regardless, I wanted to share this quote with you because I did something this week that scares the CRAP out of me.

“Waiting to develop courage is just another form of procrastination. The most successful people take action while they’re afraid.” – Unknown

I signed up for the CrossFit Games.

Yikes!

I don’t think I’m ready. I don’t think I have a chance. I’m not even sure I’ll be able to compete on any level.

It’s completely pushing me out of my comfort zone.

And that’s why I’m doing it.

I told you …

I’m IN!

The Sigma Table

Many of you have been watching the progress of our Napa farm renovation

and the completion of our media kitchen. It’s finally time for the next step? The dining room.

Since our floor plan is open and the dining area isn’t really a separate room, it was important to find just the right table to complement our contemporary kitchen design.

Voila! Here is picture of our new table called The Sigma Drive Expandable dining table.

A sigma table

The top is a vertical slice of gorgeous Canaletto Walnut also know as American Black Walnut. Like the tree itself, the outer edges of the table are irregular too. It is currently being crafted in a small town called Carre in Northern Italy and will be delivered to us from www.italydesign.com in Emeryville, California.

In preparation for it’s arrival, I have chalked the dining area floor to show where the Sigma table will live. Two different colors of chalk markings show the table length with and without table extended. Thank you www.italydesign.com

Or, more aptly put, we compel our pirate to get *his* exercise on in preparation for a day of hornpipe playing and grog drinking.

I know he appears happy. Do not be misled.

Wednesday Weigh In: Thankfully the Scale is Only One Measure …

I won’t say I was excited to get on the scale this morning but I also wasn’t dreading it. I’ve had a great week. #WYCWYC has really motivated me to incorporate more movement throughout the day, I’ve been more in control of my nighttime snack habit, and I’ve stayed true to Operation Breaking Bad Habits getting at least 7 hours a sleep each night (except in Savannah because I was on such a tight schedule.)

Anyway, my point is: I feel GREAT about my week and the scale is not going to tell me otherwise. It’s showing a 0.2 gain but whatever, I rocked it.

20130911_weighin

Oh, well, this is one of those times I have to remind myself it’s SO MUCH more than what that scale says. It’s how I feel and today I feel FANTASTIC.

So, how was your week?

4 tips for keeping up with an *active* child (or friend or life-partner).

Oh Miz.  I get tired reading about how you play with the Tornado. This makes me terrified to have kids because it looks exhausting!!!  I need motherhood tips now LOL

Im not a super young mother.

This is neither a good thing nor a bad thing – it just is.

Because of this, however, I’m confident I spend more time thinking about how I can keep up with my seven-year-old’s boundless energy than my mom-peers in their early 30s.

Right now I’m doing ok.

Tomorrow? I have that covered as well. (3 cheers for the ease of playground play!)

The years to come?

The years where she’ll only get faster, busier & (with any luck) more focused on movement?

You’d better believe I have a plan for staying fit, feisty and fabulous(ly active) as I move toward 50+.  (<—ACRONYM ALERT! ACRONYM ALERT!)

My secret weapon is K.I.D.S

A four-pronged approach applicable for young-at-heart & young-in-age parents alike.

Keep up with interests. The Tornado loves gymnastics & I can still contort into a backbend.  As interests change, I may no longer possess the ‘skills.’  This isn’t important. What is important is staying in touch with her passions. Notice what your child loves.  Learn about the hobby. Talk about what he’s doing/playing. Communication & strong parent/child bond boosts health as much physical activity.

Invest in you. Put yourself first & make time for exercise/healthy living. It can feel as though takes you away from your child, but helps you keep up with them & *able* to active-play later.

20121119 132634 225x300 4 tips for keeping up with an *active* child (or friend or life partner). I exit this EARLY to snag me-time.

Do new things! A large part of staying healthy as we age/playing an active role in children’s lives resides between our ears. Keep your cranium stimulated with new athletic activities. This prong also has added benefit of making you the coolest parent on the cul de sac when you gather the kids for a day of slack lining or pogo stick’ing!

Start or Stay in shape.  Fallen off the workout wagon? Thought of child-chasing all afternoon sound exhausting? Make today the day you start a workout routine. Even something as *seemingly* basic as opening the front door and walking outside ROCKS for increasing energy! Already exercise? Don’t stop. Exercise begets energy and is our best line of defense when it comes to keeping up with our kids.

There you have it.

The K.I.D.S. ACRONYM I lean on during days I feel freakin wiped out less than super-energetic.

Now you.

Please to add a letter to my acronym! What do you do to stay ENERGIZED with your child, life-partner or friends?

My one year crossfit affair (guest post).

I debated recently whether or not I wanted to post about my one year anniversary with Crossfit because I think my take on it is a little bit unique. But then it occurred to me that I should write about it because it is unique.

My Crossfit anniversary was actually in July, so about a month ago. Prior to when I began in July of 2012 I had been circuit training and doing HIIT for about three years, so I had lost about 5 – 10 pounds and at least 10% body fat.

bikini27 bikini30 228x300 My one year crossfit affair (guest post).

But my mind was wondering.

I had been married to circuit training as well as running half marathons, 5k and 10k’s for so long I wasn’t sure Crossfit was going to be right for me. I had tried it once before and always felt like I was doing things wrong, yet there was no one there to correct me.

I began taking twice weekly workshops on the olympic lifts – the snatch and the clean and jerk. This was fantastic, but incredibly time consuming. Ultimately, I was still training for a half marathon as well as what would be my second and third bikini competitions. I quickly learned that these three fitness goals did not match. You can’t try to get really lean, increase your endurance and increase your strength all at once.

While the half marathon then the bikini competitions won for the time being, I still had the itch to continue with the olympic lifts.

Shortly after my competitions, I was getting restless. I needed to change things up a bit. I was tired of focusing 100% on my body fat percentage (or lack thereof,) and constantly trying to get leaner – I needed to go pick things up and set them down. My inner meathead needed to come out and I needed to lift some heavy stuff!

oly2 200x300 My one year crossfit affair (guest post).

I knew I did not want to go back to the same box I had been at previously, so I talked to a friend who had been training at Crossfit Southie for years. So one afternoon I headed into the city and dropped into my first class. Right there on the spot I did my very first double under – something I thought was impossible.

I signed up for 3 classes a week on the very first day, which turned into the unlimited package two weeks later – I was hooked.

Since then I have competed in 6 competitions -

Northeast Garage Games Finals, November 2012 – Scaled Division, 10th place our of 60

Crossfit 2A In-House Throwdown, January 2013 – RX Division, 10th place out of 17

Love ‘Em or Leave ‘Em Couples Competition, February 2013

Crossfit Free In-House Throwdown, April 2013 – RX Division

WOD For Dimes Team Competition, May 2013 – RX Division

Crossfit Newton Mass Mayhem Garage Games, August 2013 – RX Division

snatchgood 300x200 My one year crossfit affair (guest post).

I am currently taking the competitor’s class at Crossfit Southie and every single day I show up excited for what the day will hold.

The next best thing to showing up to the box is looking up the workout the day before when it posts! That is how hooked I am.

In the last year I have…

Increased my back squat by 30 pounds

Increased my clean and jerk by 25 pounds

Increased my deadlift by 35 pounds

Learned to snatch properly and increased it by 10 pounds

Learned to perform kipping pullups, chest to bar pullups, handstand push ups, pistols, clean and press an axle, climb a rope, pick up atlas stones and swing a 53 pound kettlebell

I have also decreased my 500m row time by 12 seconds

And all the while I have been able to maintain my one underlying goal of having visible abs.

1.1 to 1.16.13 300x300 My one year crossfit affair (guest post).

Part of the reason I feel as though my love affair with Crossfit is very unique is how it has gotten me past a lot of body image issues.

As you know, I was overly consumed with my weight and my body fat percentage. All I had ever known of working out was to do it to be thin. Quickly I learned that to get stronger I was probably going to have to put on some muscle.

As I achieved PR’s and set the standard for myself higher and higher, my confidence soared.

Until one day, I was going on a trip to Florida and I was trying on outfits to take with me and low and behold, my shorts no longer fit. I remember that moment well – it was not one I enjoyed. I knew that it wasn’t fat -it couldn’t be. I had been eating very clean, I was training hard and I almost always had visible abs.

I looked back on my progress pictures and I realized – I had developed muscles – REAL LIFE USABLE MUSCLES. I had wider lats and I had developed quads and my glutes were as outstanding as ever.

I had two choices – quit Crossfit or fall in love with my current body.

I was smitten with Crossfit – I’m not quitting – I want to make it to the Games! So I decided right then and there that I would love my body just the way it is. Here’s my pre-Crossfit body compared to recent progress pics…

1yr CFS 226x300 My one year crossfit affair (guest post).

And you know, sometimes you have to do that.

Whether you have gotten a little bigger (muscles) or maybe you have excess skin because you’ve lost fat. Or perhaps you have decided that you can’t be a slave to your perfect diet and you aren’t as lean as you once were —learn to love that body of yours because you only get one, and you have to spend your whole life with it, so you may as well show it some love.

Because let me tell you, when you do, it will love you back.

Our bodies do absolutely amazing things – we need to build them up, not break them down.
So now it’s your turn..

Do you Crossfit?

If so, do you love it? Why?

Has it changed your body or your mind? How?

Id love to hear from you!

St. Louis Tough Mudder Recap

All the fear and trepidation about flying to a strange city specifically to run a Tough Mudder with complete strangers was eased the moment I met Kim (and her team) in person on Friday night. They were so warm, welcoming and friendly. We gave each other a great big hug and bonded while decorating shirts for the Mudder.

Saturday we woke up at the crack of dawn and headed to (what I would describe as) the middle of nowhere.

Screen Shot 2013-09-16 at 10.05.28 AM

Cell service was sketchy so I wasn’t able to post many updates. I may be the only person who likes when that happens because I get to completely disconnect — something I don’t do nearly enough.

Here’s our crazy team as we head to the start line in our matching blue shirts.

20130914_TMStLouis01

There were eight of us: From left to right below, Donna, Liz, Sheila, Kim, Adam, me, Emily, and Cory.

20130914_TMStLouis02

Kim was really excited and EXACTLY how I pictured her from our email exchanges.

20130914_TMStLouis03

It’s so funny and many won’t believe me, but for as many people I meet from the site who tell me “I feel like I know you” the feeling is usually mutual. I don’t hold much back on the blog, so if we chat in email or on Facebook it’s me, like really me.

During the event we had our own personal photographer.  Megan, Kim’s daughter, was snapping from the spectator points. She was amazing!

20130914_TMStLouis04

This was my sixth Tough Mudder and it was the muddiest one yet!

20130914_TMStLouis05

And let me tell you, there’s something extra special squishy and sticky about Missouri mud.

20130914_TMStLouis06

We sloshed through, slipping and sliding.

20130914_TMStLouis07

And that’s how teams bond during a Mudder.

20130914_TMStLouis08

Kim, Donna and I chatted a bunch on the course. It was so great getting to know these amazing people.

20130914_TMStLouis09

There were a lot of smiles.

20130914_TMStLouis10

But we were working our tails off.

20130914_TMStLouis11

And the sense of accomplishment was rampant in the best way possible as we tacked obstacle after obstacle.

20130914_TMStLouis12

Everyone did an amazing job and we conquered each obstacle as a team. After 11 miles and 16 obstacles we were exhausted and the thought of making it up the half pipe was daunting.

20130914_TMStLouis13

But we dived right in! That’s me taking the leap …

20130914_TMStLouis14

And getting up on my very first try!

20130914_TMStLouis15

We worked as a team and got everyone up that darn pipe. This is Kim’s first and only attempt as well!

20130914_TMStLouis16

Megan snapped so many pictures I just had to turn it into an animated gif for her.

20130914_KimHalfPipe

We totally rocked it!

20130914_TMStLouis17

Here we are in the half pipe afterglow as the finish line was in sight.

20130914_TMStLouis18

This is my favorite picture of the day. I was so proud and happy for Kim I can’t think about it without tearing up.

20130914_TMStLouis19

She did it.

She shoved herself out of her comfort zone, overcame her fears and accomplished something she never thought possible.

I’m so proud of our team and I feel honored I got to be a part of their first Tough Mudder.

20130914_TMStLouis20

Note: That Guy in the back with the open mouth totally photobombed us and it CRACKS me up ever time I see it.

The whole experience has renewed my love of the Tough Mudder. After taking a few months off after the Double Header I was having my doubts but it was just as fun as I remembered. I can’t wait until Kentucky next month!

My other Tough Mudder events:

Tough Mudder PA 2021 – My First one! Tough Mudder Florida 2012Tough Mudder SoCal 2013(and 5) Tough Mudder Mid Atlantic – My Double Header!

Huge shout out to froyo18 on Instagram for all the photos! Thanks, Megan!
