Ignoring the Peanut Gallery

peanut gallery

A few weeks ago, I strapped Little Bean in the stroller and took advantage of a gorgeous fall day by going for a run. While crossing an intersection I glanced over to the cars waiting at the light and saw a guy opening his window. All of a sudden he blurts out,

"Stop running. You’re too thin!"

I so wanted to flip him the bird and NOT in a cute way like the husband.

Instead, I ignored him and just kept running.

My mind was racing…

First of all, I’m not running to be thin, I’m running because I like the way it makes me feel. Second, Too thin? Really? I’m not going to lie, part of me was a little flattered even though I know he didn’t mean it as a compliment, but then I gave myself a mental slap and remembered (third) his opinion doesn’t mean squat to me. I don’t care if you think I’m fat, skinny, or anything in between. It’s taken me a long time to realize that the only person’s opinion about my body that matters is mine. Everyone else can go–trying to keep it clean here–suck a duck. Fourth–because now I’m on a roll– who do you think you are spewing your opinions out you car window? I mean, really, what are you trying to accomplish?

Why do people feel the need to give unsolicited advice?

Like…

"Anon" who left a comment on my Weight Progress page today…

You’ve been plateaued for years and need to make some changes! Start reading up on paleo/primal, reinvestigate intermittent fasting, research high intensity interval training, blood type theory, leptin etc. You aren’t making progress, you’re going backwards. As long as you *think* you have an ED, you do. Mark’s Daily Apple has a lot of good info, you might want to head over there.

My response…

Not sure what you are talking about. I’ve maintained for years. How THIN do you think I should (or anyone) should be?!?

Here I have one schmuck telling me I’m too thin and another one giving me weight loss advice because I’m "going backwards??"

THIS is why you ignore the Peanut Gallery. If you don’t, you’re doomed. It’s impossible to make everyone happy. Do what’s right for you and ignore the naysayers.

You know what they say, opinions are like…. fill in the blank. I’ve been sassy enough in this post already. ;)

The Simply Bar (Peanut Butter Chocolate)

The Simply Bar
(Photo Credit: Diet Desert n Dogs)

On my quest to go milk- and gluten-free this past week, I've found that my snack and nutrition bar options are quite limited. Some bars (like ThinkThin) are gluten-free but contain milk, and others are lactose-free but have gluten. What was I to do? Enter The Simply Bar, a company that advertises its products as being gluten-free, lactose-free, vegan, and low glycemic index.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 bar (40 gram
Calories: 160
Total Fat: 3 grams, 5%
Saturated Fat: 1 grams, 5%
Sodium: 165, 7%
Carbohydrates: 16 grams
Fiber: 1.5 grams, 4%
Sugars: 10 grams
Protein: 16 grams

One caveat: these bars are pretty expensive. I paid $2.49 for a Peanut Butter Chocolate flavor of The Simply Bar. As for the taste, it's simply fantastic. While these bars aren't as thick and big as some others, they are quite chewy and immensely satisfying. The all-natural ingredients make for a wonderful-tasting combination of chocolate and peanut butter and anyone else who is a fan of this combination will not be disappointed.

Each 40 gram bar provides 160 calories, 3 grams of fat, 1 gram of which is saturated (5% of the daily value), 1.5 grams of fiber, 10 grams of sugar and 16 grams of protein!

More impressive than the nutritionals - hello 16 grams of protein - is the wholesome ingredients list. It includes, Soy Crisps (Non GMO soy protein, Tapioca starch, salt), Organic Agave Nectar, Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Peanut Butter, Organic Fair Trade Cocoa, Natural Flavor.

I much prefer the The Simply Bar (Peanut Butter Chocolate) to the Cocoa Coffee flavor, in fact, I wish I had bought more.

Chocolite Protein Peanut Butter Bar (Sugar Free)

Chocolite Protein Peanut Butter BarJust check out all the Chocolite reviews, and you'll see that brand has some of our favorite products. I've already gone nuts over some of their protein bars, like the Chocolite Protein Triple Chocolate Bar (Sugar Free) and Chocolite Protein Chocolate Turtle Protein Bar - so why not try another flavor?! I picked up the Peanut Butter variety and wasted no time in trying it out.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 34 grams
Calories: 100
Total Fat: 4 grams, 8%
Saturated Fat: 2 grams, 10%
Sodium: 130 mg, 5%
Carbohydrates: 17 grams
Fiber: 10 grams, 42%
Sugars: 0 grams
Sugar Alcohols: 4 grams
Protein: 9 grams

The combo of peanut butter and chocolate is pure heaven for me, so I had high hopes for this protein bar. At just 100 calories per package, I was excited to find a high-protein, low-calorie, gluten free snack (or dessert). I opened my bar and examined the flat, chocolate-coated treat. I took a bite and was struck with the taste of ... toffee. No, this doesn't really taste like peanut butter, but it does taste like peanut brittle or toffee. Strange, yes, and more strange since I was imagining something like the Chocolite Sugar Free Peanut Butter Cup Patties. Still, it was good, though quite chewy and not peanut buttery at all.

Each Chocolite Protein Peanut Butter Bar provides 100 calories, 4 grams of total fat, 2 grams of which is saturated, 10 grams of fiber, 4 grams of sugar alcohols, 9 grams of protein, plus 30% of the daily value for vitamin C, iron, vitamin D, vitamin E, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, vitamin B12, biotin, pantothenic acid, and zinc.

Look at all those vitamins and minerals ... and fiber ... and protein! The ingredients list starts with a protein blend of Non-GMO Soy Protein Isolate, Non-GMO Soy Crisps mostly soy and whey protein isolate. These bars cost $1.59 at my local grocery store and is also available online. I will definitely buy this again - though not for a peanut butter fix!
