5 Tips for Busy Moms: How to Fit Exercise Into Your Day

I normally reserve Tuesday posts for top 10s but honestly, I just didn’t have it in me. I still don’t think I’ve recovered from this weekend! I can’t seem to find my groove.

I guess it didn’t help having a sick toddler (he’s doing much better,) a doctors appointment for myself, and a speaking engagement tonight. Plus the 8 year-old’s Boy Scout troop has two outings this week and my friend has an art opening I really want to get to. ‘Tis the season, I guess. With the holidays coming, I only see more craziness — in a fun way at least!

Anyway, I wrote this post for HumanaVitality and I really wanted to post it here. In it I share my philosophy on how to fit workouts in our busy schedules, which is exactly what I’m doing this week. Today, before my doctor’s appointment I snuck in an hour and yesterday I did something I rarely do, I hit the gym during lunch since I missed my normal early-morning class. Old Roni may have used busy as an excuse. Now I look at it like a challenge.

Anyway, here’s the post. I’ll be back tomorrow for weigh in. I’m really curious how my scale compared to the doctor’s since it was way higher than I anticipated.

Every mom is busy, regardless of how many kids she has or whether or not she works outside the home. There’s always something to do, someone to feed, or somewhere to go. I’m not sure what I did with the time I had before kids, but I sure do miss it!

Now that the to-do list is never ending and my kids have more active social calendars than I do, just getting dinner on the table is a challenge. But there is one thing I do for myself almost daily that many moms may not think they have time to do: I work out.

It doesn’t sound fun or glamorous after a day of wrestling the kids and putting out fires, but exercise helps keep me sane in the insane world of parenting. It’s truly the only time I have to myself with no phone and no kids fighting for my attention. It keeps me fit physically and mentally to better handle the other areas of my life. And, well, it just makes me feel good!

Once you decide to make working out a priority, the biggest challenge you may face is how to fit it in with your already overbooked schedule. That’s right where I’m going to start with my how-to-fit-in-exercise tips:

Make it a Priority

What do you do when the kids join a sports team or an after-school club? You put the meeting dates in the calendar. Treat your workouts the same way. Schedule your workout time in advance to make sure you are making the time. Look through the week, find the holes and fill them with workout reminders.

As you’d imagine, today our household is all about laughter & lagoons.  Silliness & scurvy talk.

But first?

We. Exercise.

Or, more aptly put, we compel our pirate to get *his* exercise on in preparation for a day of hornpipe playing and grog drinking.

I know he appears happy. Do not be misled.

He’s not a morning-pirate and hasnt worked out in years.

The Courage to NOT Exercise (this is an experiment)

josiem The Courage to NOT Exercise (this is an experiment)My workouts have been super tough lately. Tougher than ever, actually. And now I really need a break. My fitness progress this past month has been epic, but my body is tired and my mind has become a wee bit weary.

So I’ve decided to do a little experiment.

For the next 7 days (starting today), I will do NO Beastmode workouts. I will do NO plyometrics, NO strength training, NO Speed Rope, NO burpees. Nothing like that at all. YIKES! Do you see where this is going?

What will I do instead? I will continue to climb Corcovado Mountain, bask in bendy-flowy Yoga-ish moves set to relaxing music, and enjoy luxurious walks through the park on my lunch breaks. More personal prayer time is also on the menu.

I will also hide under my bed so the Greedy Family can’t terrorize me. I’ll have a filled-up wine glass with me, of course.

Ahhhh. I can feel myself becoming rejuvenated already.

I’ve never done this before — never refrained for such a long stretch of time. It’s going to take courage to NOT exercise as usual (weird, huh?). I’m taking cues from my body and will honor what it’s asking of me.

Restoration! Relaxation! Renewed strength! I’m all about that life, yo.

((drops mic and crawls under bed))

Why I exercise intuitively.

ahhh over-trained youth. ahhh over-trained youth.

I became an intuitive eater long before I tapped into the notion of intuitive exercise.

For some reason I was able to trust my body’s “knowing” with regards to food yet was slow on the proverbial uptake with heeding its messaging about workouts.

I created a workout plan. I followed said plain. Period.

I do think some of missing the intuitive exercise message happened because of LOVE.

I met the weights.  I was smitten with the weights.  I felt strong and powerful when hoisting the weights.  I ignored my body’s cues to back off & rest from the weights.

It took another kind of love (the groovy kind. the child kind.) for me to realize the power of intuitive exercise.

I changed.

I never looked back.

Here’s why.

It’s  how I already live.  Mindfully. Daily.  I start with meditationI eat.  I segue to work (my approach is still mindful).  Why would I change when it comes to exercise?  With hindsight this makes sense.  When I was deep in the throes of not deviating from my “program” no matter how fatigued it would have sounded crazy.  We know–when we’re honest with ourselves–if we wanna skip a workout because we’re feeling lazy or our bodies need the rest.  Ive already done the over-training thing…and it sucked (technical term).  I didnt know much when I first started exercising.  I lifted & GREW. I lifted more more more & shrank (muscle) and held on (to body fat) and grew (exhausted, crabby, sleepless).  If Id have listened to my body back then Id never have over-trained.The older I get the more rest I require.  This could just be me or it could be common—but all that matters is Im heeding my body’s signals.  Sure, Ive been tempted to get caught up in the internet hype.  Challenges! Competitions!  People exercising twice a day!! yet I force myself to stop, be silent and listen to what my body needs.  Life is my sport.  I might *look* better if I exercised longer/harder—but I wouldnt feel better & that’s what’s important to me.
Im a misfit.  A rebel.  Ive shed the MUSTurbation in favor of trusting myself.  Living intuitively is all about trust.  It’s creating a life routine which consists of doing/eating/whatever’ing a variety of things whenever your body seeks them.  Exercise is no different.fitness many days my body seeks playful, gentle fitness

None of the above means I love all exercise (although Im far more CARDIOsmitten since I discovered the Street Strider).

For me it means exercise —whether Im sluggish or super motivated–is never a punishment & always a gift to my body.

And you?

Have you spent time discovering what your body wants with regards to movement?Do heed your body’s messages of exhaustion/pain?Have you considered your WHY behind exercise lately?

Five Foolproof Ways to Motivate Yourself to Exercise

Does this sound like you?

You do your best to fit exercise into your busy schedule. And most of the time, you enjoy it. It takes away your stress. It makes you feel strong. And you know it’s good for you.

But there’s no doubt about it: we all have those days when it sounds better to curl up on the couch and not move for days than to throw on our exercise clothes and work out.

Maybe you’re sore from the previous day’s workout. Maybe you’re tired. Or maybe you’d just plain rather be doing something else.

Whatever the reason, those are the days when we all need that extra little push to get us off our butts and into our training gear.

So how do you motivate yourself to exercise when you feel anything but?Ca

Here are five of my favorite ways:

1. Put the play back in exercise

You don’t have to endure the punishment of a stuffy, windowless gym in order to get a good workout in. Learn how to add play back in your life, and working out will no longer feel like a chore.

Here are a few ideas of how you can play more:

Go exploring (outside). There’s nothing like mother nature to get you in the spirit of being a kid again. Run, jump, climb, play.Take up a new sport. You’ll have so much fun learning, you’ll forget you’re actually exercising. Stand up paddle boarding, mountain biking, and kickboxing are just a few ideas.Play video games. You heard me right: the Nintendo Wii and Xbox Kinect both have game options that will get you playing and moving. My favorite are the Wii Sports games and the dancing games (even though I’m terrible at them!).

The key is to get moving and have fun—and you won’t even notice you’re sneaking in exercise!

2. Make it short

You don’t have to do long, boring cardio or spend hours lifting weights in the gym in order to get fit. If you’re short on time, or just aren’t feeling up to a long workout, you can do some high intensity interval training (HIIT).

Since HIIT workouts are quick (most take no more than 10 to 20 minutes to complete), you may feel a lot more motivated to do them since you know they’ll be over before you know it.

Because everyone has an extra 10 or 20 minutes in their day, right?

Just remember—for HIIT to be effective, you have to work as hard as you can!

3. Get an accountability buddy

Whether it’s a workout buddy, your significant other, or an online community (such as the ever awesome MizFitOnline community!), having someone you can report your progress to is the single best way to keep motivated and on track with your workouts.

Because when someone else holds you accountable, you’ll be much less likely to blow off a workout you’ve previously committed to than if you’re the only one keeping track.

4. Keep track of your progress

Keeping track of your progress is one of the best motivators around, especially when you feel like you’re in a rut.

Start a workout journal—either a physical paper one or an electronic notepad of some sort will work—and keep it somewhere handy so you’ll easily be able to record your progress.

Even better, write down a list of your health and fitness goals and revisit them now and again to make sure you’re staying on track.

5. Change your mindset

If you want to stay motivated in the longterm, you need to completely reframe your idea of exercise.

Rather than thinking of working out as a temporary solution to lose weight, start viewing it as a longterm goal to live a longer, healthier life—one where you can keep up with your kids and grandkids and stay healthy and mobile into old age.

When you do that, working out becomes a privilege, not a chore—and there’s no better motivator than that.

Get motivated today

Don’t let your excuses stop you from living the healthy and fit life you want.

Get motivated to work out today, and reap the benefits for years to come.

Exercise is not my passion.

Ill admit to loving me some OFFICE'ercising.

Exercise isn’t my passion.

This fact will come as no surprise to most of you.

I workout.  Consistently.  I have for close to two decades.  I have no plans to stop.

That said, when we (the royal) meet up at blogger conferences or other social media events I’m always the first to announce EXERCISE IS NOT MY PASSION.

For me the word passion is indicative of something you’d choose to do all day every day if you could.

For me the word passion is something which lights a fire inside you, sparks you to growth, & satiates a need or desire.

For me the word passion is something you long to talk about, read about, & engulf yourself in 24.7.

Exercise is not my passion.

I was reminded of this when I read a recent post by Kate .

(if you do not read her–you must. shes insightful, brutally honest & has a gift with words.  so much so I grow excited when I see a comment left here by her as I know, whether it’s what I want to hear or NOT,  there will be wisdom/loving honesty contained within).

The post in its entirety is here, but it was the two sentences below which prompted today’s blog:

Life is more than our bodies. We need strong, healthy bodies to live our life to the fullest, but when our bodies become our whole lives, we miss out on the things we wanted those bodies for in the first place.

I completely agree with Kate’s words.

Exercise & leading a healthy life is the backdrop to my daily existence.

At 42.5 I need a strong, healthy body in order to live my life the way I define as “full.”

I need energy (so I workout).

I need strength and functional fitness (so I workout).

I wish my back didnt hurt want a strong core & lower back (so I workout).

I want to lead a long and vibrant next 42.5 years (so I workout).

I want to be able to do, live and be my passion *without* bodily limitations (so I workout).

Exercise is neither my life nor my passion.

It is, in a way which works for me, a mere (consistent!) snippet of my day which allows me to pursue my passion with limitless strength & boundless energy.

My passion (please to see definition above) is helping people & promoting healthy living.

Spreading the word about exercise is one way my passion manifests itself.

And you?

Will you take a moment & share with me what makes you come to life?

Will you take moment & share with me what you could do all.day.long. & be happier than the proverbial high-protein clam?

Will you share with me YOUR passion?

Exercise like a child–just don’t call it that. (guest post)

As a personal trainer and group fitness instructor, I’ve managed to acquire a rather impressive collection of portable exercise equipment. Assorted dumbbells, various yoga blocks and straps, skipping ropes, stability balls, Bosu, ankle weights, elastic tubing and (my personal favorite), a TRX.

Usually these objects reside in the trunk of my car, waiting to be ferried to the home of a client. Or the aerobics studio, on days when I know I’m going to need extra equipment. Or the backyard, when I’m desperate for a workout and can’t get to the gym.

Recently, however, I emptied my overly stuffed trunk (Cub Scout camp requires an awful lot of gear). Every last piece of exercise equipment was carried into the house. Before I could lock the car, let alone decide where to store things, my children pounced.

“What’s this for?”

“Look what happens when I wrap this rubbery thing around my waist”

“Ooh, Mommy, it’s a baby trampoline”

“Watch me, watch me, watch me!”

“Those are huge balls” (7-year old boys are obsessed with balls)

I started to tell them to leave ‘mommy’s work tools’ alone, that they were expensive and could be broken, that they were for grownups only, but stopped when I saw how much fun they were having. (More fun, I might add, than any of my clients or class participants has ever demonstrated while using them…)

Jumping on the Bosu. Rolling over the ball. Swinging the skipping rope around. Pulling on the ends of the elastic tubing. Balancing on the yoga block. Balancing on the yoga block on the Bosu. Balancing on the yoga block on the stability ball on the Bosu(don’t try this one at home). Creating their own circuit of objects over which to navigate across the ‘red hot lava’ of the floor.

Before long they were giddy and out of breath. Giggling with the enjoyment of exertion. Exhilarated with the feeling of fatigued muscles. Collapsing on the floor for a moment before doing it all over again. (Note,I did not have my camera handy when the above events took place and had to persuade my son to repeat the episode so ‘Mommy can take some pictures’. My daughter, older and wiser, refused to feign spontaneity; ‘I’m not faking it’ were, I believe, the words she used.)

And then I remembered, a long time ago, when they were very small, the naked, post-bath games of Bosu-follow-the-leader they played every evening before bed. The pure joy they experienced flinging themselves off the bouncy surface and on to the bed. Jumping, spinning, kicking and falling down exhausted, ready for PJ’s and a bedtime story.

I can’t remember why we ended these evening games. Perhaps I felt that they’d gotten too old. Maybe someone fell and bumped their head.  Probably they got bored with it.

But I’m resurrecting the game. Anything that motivates them to unplug and get moving is fine by me.

I’ve put the dangerous things away (dumbbells, TRX, yoga straps; anything that could be used as a weapon), but left the others in an easy-to-access cupboard in the playroom. For a rainy day. When they’re bored. For when they just need to move.

Just don’t call it exercise or a workout. Those are for grownups who’ve forgotten the most basic reason to challenge their bodies through movement; because it just feels good.

Last week I told you all about my own hooping journey and went through some of the awesome benefits of hula hooping. Now it’s time to get into the spin yourself!

1) Get a hoop

It’s easy to make your own hoop very cheaply or you can buy one online or at the store. Make sure you get an adult sized hoop (36 inch diameter or bigger) NOT a kid’s hoop – ideally your hoop should come up to your hip bone when it’s standing up. The bigger the hoop, the slower it moves and so the easier it is to keep up.

2) Get it spinning

To get it spinning on your waist, stand up straight with your feet hip distance apart. Squeeze the muscles in your legs, butt and abs. Hold the hoop on your lower back so it’s parallel to the floor and give is a strong push around your stomach. You can start pushing forwards and backwards as the hoop comes around, or try a side to side push.

To save the hoop if it starts falling, you can squat down with your back straight (as if you were sitting on a chair), and stand back up, pushing the hoop the whole time.

Make sure you hoop equally in both clockwise and counter clockwise, to work your muscles evenly (even though one direction will feel much stranger than the other!).

3) Learn some tricks

Hooping ain’t just about the waist any more, there are thousands of tricks and moves you can do with your new hoop, both on the body and off.

Classes are a great way to learn what you can do with your hoop and get personal feedback. But if no one is teaching near you, or if you can’t afford classes right now, Youtube has thousands of free tutorials like these.

4) Be kind to yourself

And remember, hooping can take a bit of time to get the hang of. Be kind to yourself. Know that every bit of practice will make you a better hooper – it’s all going into your muscle memory even if it feels like you’re not getting it.

So smile when your hoop drops to the ground, laugh when your hoop flings off into the neighbours yard and wear your hoop bruises with pride (and with Arnica cream),

Can you help me spread the joy of hooping to kids in refugee camps?

I’m heading to the Thai/Burma border in January to work with children in refugee camps, teaching them circus skills, bringing them toys, performing silly routines to make them laugh and just generally giving them a bit of a childhood.  I would appreciate any donations you could make. Your views

I’d love to hear what you have to say about hula hooping! Want to give it a go? Already a spinner? Got any questions or need some trouble shooting advice? Post a comment and I’ll help you out!

Love and hoopiness to you all,

Jo

More On Naked Exercise

So now that the half-naked Yoga movement has been established, what other parts of the body can we strip down to nakedness for the sake of good fitness?

Emm-no. I’m not asking us to get naked together…hell naw! I’ve already did enough nakedness in the presence of another to last a lifetime. Why do you think I have four damn kids? …ummm, I’m getting off topic.

But do not fear! I am NOT talking about butt cracks and man-junk swinging and on display for all the world. Good gawd, keep your shorts on while you read this. I’m talking about your feet (hopefully they are non-crusty?).

As if you jumped out the belly of the womb wearing Asics? The human-body manual doesn’t call for a “Shoes & Socks Add-on App” for our feet to do the exercising. Now, I’m not forcing you to do things my way, but allow me to explain….

The “let me explain” Part

I have been exercising (at home) with my feet naked for almost 4 years now. Before then, all of my indoor cardio and weight training with shoes would make my ankles twist and/or my knees hurt. There’s just something about exercising with sneakers on a carpet that does not mix well with me. There’s also that whole barefoot running movement, but I’m not running my azz nowhere right now.

So I yanked off my shoes and socks while neverminding all that science behind foot support and cushioning and sh!t. To this day, even while doing the intense-est cardio ever, I have never had another ankle tweak or injury. As for my knees. There are, of course certain exercises that can bother that part of the body, but knees-twisting due to having on my sneakers is no longer an issue.

I don’t think about foot-form or worry about cracking my ankles anymore. I just go at my workouts – even hardcore plyometics – with no shoes on and no pain.

Naked is just better for me.

I appreciate my body for what it can perform in its most natural, organic state without accessories added on (like shoes). So what about YOU? Have you tried naked-feet exercising? Have you struggled with sneakers while exercising on a carpet?
