Excellent reads for people who wanna lose weight and transform their body.

Please adjust your eyeballs to the “intake” setting. I’m about to lay some great reads on ya that may prove to be mighty helpful to your weight loss and body transformation missions. I usually don’t mind at all if you skim through my posts instead of reading every word, but no skimming allowed this time! Warning: I just installed an anti-skimming device onto this blog post. Everyone who skim-reads will immediately receive an electro-shock to the eyeball for being naughty.

fitnessrx for women Excellent reads for people who wanna lose weight and transform their body. FITNESS RX FOR WOMEN: Holy crap. Their website is seriously awesome. It’s like rolling around in a sandbox of fitness-resource euphoria (but you won’t get any sand granules in your bikini bottoms). It’s truly a smorgasbord of good information. The site is jam packed with workouts, printables, videos, nutrition tips, recipes, body transformation stories, targeted training plans for abs, arms, legs, shoulders & more. Just go check out the site already. Sheesh!

wheat belly book Excellent reads for people who wanna lose weight and transform their body. WHEAT BELLY: Have you heard of the book? This one is a New York Times bestseller. Although there’s a small dose of controversy (nay-sayers & eyeball rollers) surrounding Wheat Belly, the consensus is in. Most consumer reviews on Amazon give it 5-stars. Yes, I bought the book. I skimmed through it, then put it down. I picked it up again, talked to some people about the book, and talked to others who followed through on ditching or extremely lowering their wheat intake. Then I put it into practice for myself. The book deals with problems stemming from the wheat of today; the kind that has been effed with through genetic tampering, not the wheat of olden days.

I’m entering week #3 of significantly reduced wheat intake. Oh yes I am. I’m only eating bread products 1 or 2 times per week now. That’s it. This change has made a SERIOUS difference in an accelerated kind of way. I’m feeling lighter and leaner. My stomach is flatter! There’s less bloating. I’m less farty, too, which I didn’t expect would ever happen. If you or a loved one are fighting the fat, experiencing unresolved health problems (even if there is an official diagnosis), or any weird symptoms that can’t be pinned down to a certain issue, this book will open your eyes to how wheat may be affecting your body. The Wheat Belly book. You must!

4 tips for teaching little (& big) people body confidence.

our bodies can do amazing things. our bodies be amazing!

The older I become the more I realize life is cyclical.

When I was younger I EXPECTED my body to perform on command—and usually it did.

These days when my bod complies I stop, take note and appreciate.

yoga position pause for applause!

I *long* to pass this body confidence on to the Tornado and yet—while it’s a huge priority—I pretty much fly by the seat pants fancy tights.

I strive each day to beat back the influence of peers/pop culture & model for her how to look inside herself for validation/approval.

It was easier when she was younger.

ahh the oldeneighties Look mama! I. Awesome!

Yet the fact she still adores her body for the amazing vessel it is feels like a victory.

she's still her own superhero...for now. she’s her own superhero…for now.

Youve emailed, facebooked, texted, tweeted, & direct messaged me for tips and, while Ive insisted I possess none, I shall share my Tips Which Really Arent.

All four of them.

My “pants flying praying for Tornado body confidence” distilled to four confusing, muddled easy to grasp items:

Try new things with your body.  When the Tornado was younger all she cared about was I’d play.  She didnt notice how “good” or “bad” I was at our games.  Now she notices and Ive harnessed this “noticing” to my advantage.  She recognizes when Im exiting my comfort zone (hello SCOOTERING), she sees when I struggle & fail, she watches as I laugh/try again, and she encourages me to take on new challenges.  Practice what you long to preach…and theres no need to say a word.  This is the logical extension of the above yet took me YEARS to realize.  Whether you think the little person OR BIG PERSON in your life notices model the behavior you wish them to mimic.  Try new things & *loudly* acknowledge how fab they felt/what you learned about your body.  Attend your first zumba class and realize you are INDEED as AWKWARD as you’d surmised?  Seize the opportunity to share how youd always taken for granted how powerful & natural you feel when you run.they mimic. they mimic. they mimic. they mimic.

Allow your child(ren) to struggle.  This has been a challenge.  I know, however, if I dont let her struggle she’ll never emerge the other side confident in what her body can do. Recently this has been with soccer (you can do it!! I know you can get the ball!!) & her pride after pushing herself/learning her body was stronger than she’d thought was palpable.  Im aware these challenges will increase as she gets older & I know she needs to learn how powerful her body is now to get through.  My telling her is merely hollow praise. This took manymany attempts. This took repeated attempts.

SHED THE SCALE.  Yes all caps.  Yes I feel strongly about this. YES YES YES.  I shed the scale 19 years ago & never returned.  As with negative self-talk obsessive weighing is something kids see and emulate. Im aware this is a controversial tip (for many the scale is a healthy tool in the arsenal) yet if daily-weighing is part of your routine Id suggest doing so at the gym etc. Dont model frequent scale-checks for your child who may not yet be able to grasp the “just a tool” concept.use a pair of pants as nonscale check-in? use pants as a nonscale check-in?

These tips are only whats worked for our misfit-trio (Im not sure you want to raise a child who believes tiny home scales are “steppers to the shower.” seriously. it’s a little weird).

And you?

whats your best tip for teaching/modeling body confidence to the little and big people in your life?

The Post Where I Talk About Fat People

Yes. I am talking about the people who are fat. Obese. Overweight. Chubby. Curvy. Big-boned. Eh, whatever you want to call it. But it’s not what you think.

Before I began my healthy living journey I didn’t have an opinion about overweight people one way or the other. I barely noticed them. Yet when I first started to eat right and exercise, they began to stick out to me  – I noticed them more, and then I DID start to have an opinion.

My (flawed) thinking was that ALL obese people – every last one of them – eats too much and doesn’t care for their own well-being. But, hey, that’s their own business. If they wanted to live that way it was fine by me. I had no further opinion about it. End of story.

But that’s how I used to think.

Since being in this blogging game for awhile I’ve struck up some fantastic friendships with beautiful people off all shapes, sizes, races and genders. I talk with them online in the open social media environment. I chat with some via email or on the phone. I’ve even met up with some in person.

…and of all this “getting to know people” has changed me.

I no longer see fat, thin, big, tall, etc when I relate to people. I love all people. I really do! I just see the awesome person that they are and I’m thankful to know them. Sure, are there definitely some peeps whom I’ve known in my life that really DO eat too much and don’t care for their own well-being. Unfortunately, yes. But let’s remove them from the conversation right now. It’s not about them.

Back in the day when I was judging an overweight person without knowing them or their situation, it was the same as someone judging ME because I’m black. That’s happened to me plenty and it doesn’t feel good either. Why not get to know a person first and understand who they are, right?

After watching shows like Heavy and Too Fat For Fifteen (both of which I appreciate very much for helping me to further understand the “why” behind obesity in many cases), I now understand more than ever that being overweight is not always a cut and dry situation.

There may be an eating disorder or other medical condition. It could be a traumatic event from their past – maybe a death in the family, physical or emotional abuse, or even abandonment. There could be an emotional trigger, like stress, loneliness, feeling unwanted or unloved.

I’m sure I haven’t covered the entire gamut of what might make a person struggle with their weight, but if it’s YOU that is struggling – if you desire change and you’re working on it, but have only been met with criticism and finger pointing and whispers and snarky remarks from people who haven’t even bothered to get to know you first, I’m writing this post to embrace you with open arms – to acknowledge your situation, your feelings and your struggle.

I can only hope there will be more people who will “see the light” as I have and respect you as well. This type of acceptance might very well spark a greater empowerment for the overweight person to be healed from their past, to experience recovery, or to simply be happy and free to create new, healthy habits without having to deal with other people’s judgmental ignorance.

Bikini Body Blaster! 20-Minute Tailor Made Workout (with video) For All You Beautiful People Out There

I’m an extremely lazy busy woman. And that means on some days, I have less than 30 minutes to put in work for the Bikini Body Challenge. I shared this time squashing problem with the man-blogger that is Rog Law (who is also a Personal Trainer and Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach) and forced asked him to create a tailor-made workout for the people of YumYuckytopia (that’s you and me) that can be done in as little as 20 minutes. So are you ready to workout!?

Watch Rog in this quick 2-minute video tutorial that showcases all the moves, then read on for his full explanatory breakdown of the workout.

Bodacious Bikini Body Blaster

When it comes to working out consistently, finding enough time is one of the main hurdles that most people face, but have no fear for I am here to help! The following workout requires no fanciful equipment or major investment of your time, so as long as you’re willing to kick it up a few notches for the entire session, you will be handsomely rewarded for your efforts. Alright Yuckers and Yucketts, no more chatting – it’s time to get your sexy on!

The Workout: Starting with A (below), perform each exercise in order for the prescribed number of reps, taking only as much rest as you need to before moving on to the next one. Once you reach the end, cycle back through the exercises again until the allotted time expires. Make sure to mark down how many total reps of each exercise you perform and aim to beat this number the next time you repeat this workout. Rest 2 minutes before moving onto the next series and repeating the same process.

Here is a breakdown of how this would look:

A (10 – 15 minutes)

Elevated Torso Pushup – 5 repsGoblet Squat Presses – 5 squats + 5 press = 1 rep (5 reps total)Seal Jumping Jacks – 25 repsLeg Lowering – 5 each

Rest 2 Min

B (10 – 15 minutes)

Mountain Climbers – 20 each legHalf Kneeling Curl To Press – 5 each armStability Ball Deadbugs – 5 each sideWeighted Glute Bridge – 5 reps

Rest 2 Min

C (5 – 10 minute bonus round)

Squat Uppercut – 5 each sideAli Shuffles – 15 per foot

The Weight: For all of the weighted exercises, start with a weight that you think that you could only do 10 times with good form and adjust accordingly if it’s too heavy or light. You’ll notice that you’re only doing 5 reps with that weight, and that’s by design. By the time you get towards the end of the workout, you most likely won’t even be able to perform the 5 reps that you started out with, and that’s fine. Only do as many reps as you can with good form.

Exercise Form Notes

Mountain Climber: Work to minimize badonkadonk bouncing. Keep it as still as possibleLeg Lowering: Make sure to keep your core tight so that your low back is pressed into the floor during the entire movement. Try not to let the leg that you aren’t lowering move at all.Deadbugs: Make sure to keep your core tight so that your low back is pressed into the floor during the entire movement.Weighted Glute Bridge: Only go as high as squeezing your butt will take you – don’t excessively push your hips through in order to use your lower back.Elevated Torso Pushup: Keep your core tight and don’t allow your hips to sag when performing the movement. If it’s too hard or too easy, adjust the height of the incline accordingly.

Now go forth into the world and conquer, but don’t forget to come back here and let me know how badly this workout kicked your buttcheeks!

3 Things People Treat Better Than Their Bodies

Some people love things and stuff, and maybe even other people more than they are willing to love themselves through self-care. Join me as I bitch about it just a little bit.

1) Hair and Nails ‘n Stuff

Well, yes. These things are technically part of the body, but it’s a crime when someone is so caught up in their hair and nails that they neglect to care for the other parts of their body that are screaming for healthy attention. This brings to mind some obese woman who take great pride in their appearance, but only limit it to their hair, nails, trendy clothes, designer handbags and shoes, while neglecting to address a more serious matter – their obesity issue. Why spend 2 hours in a hair salon or 4 hours shopping, but not so much as 15 minutes on exercise?

2) Automobiles and Electronics

Some people (mostly guys) go to great lengths to ensure the proper maintenance and protection of their car and electronics. They get regular oil changes and you won’t find a speck of trash in their vehicle. If the Xbox isn’t working right, they’re quick to troubleshoot the problem and get it back in action asap. But as for their body’s proper maintenance? No way. Will they troubleshoot their weight gain with healthy solutions? No again.

3) Kids and Animals

These two can be interchanged, of course. Because my own kids are a BUNCH OF FRACKIN’ ANIMALS….and vice versa.

I’m not coming down on the people who are good to their kids. You should be good to your kids, dammit. But don’t sacrifice your own well being in the process of caring for your children. They should not be blamed for why you are not caring for yourself properly – whether it be physically, emotionally, or whatever. This type of self care is a decision, and you have to make room for it.

There are lots of moms I hear whine about not being able to shower on any given day, because their baby is too demanding and somehow won’t allow it. Well put the baby in the crib – she won’t melt if she cries – and then go wash up, or take 30 minutes to do an exercise DVD or fix your hair and pluck your chin hairs. If you have kids, please, take care of yourself. I see a lot of spiffed up, vibrant kids walking around next to a run down mom whose weight is climbing as she dons a tumbleweed hair-do and baby food stains on her clothes. That needs to stop.

And then you have the animal lover whose canine gets regular vet checkups and the best of dog food life has to offer. But the animal owner himself hasn’t been to the doc in years and eats McDonald’s for dinner.

Even as I rant about what other people aren’t doing right [insert free speech disclaimer here], I’m also using this an as opportunity to examine where I fall short. My weakest area is putting other people before myself way too often. The negative impact of this self neglect many times shows up in my attitude, my energy level and my physical appearance. But this is going to change….immediately.

I WILL do more to treat myself better. Won’t you join me in this promise?
