The Hook is… There is no Hook!

A few months ago I hinted (here and here) that fellow blogger and friend Carla (MizFit) and I were working on a book proposal together.

This is uncharted territory for me. I know nothing of the traditional writing and publishing world. Nothing. But we pulled together a proposal with the help of an agent, wrote our sample chapters and are now waiting.

And waiting.

And WAITING.

For a blogger, or, well, ME, this is tough. I’m so used to having an idea, writing my thoughts and then hitting publish. There is no filter or pitch or editor or approval process. It’s me, my laptop and, well you!

The book world? Not so simple. I always assumed this, but now I know.

We recently asked our agent for some feedback and she replied with,

"…people are really excited about you [Carla] and Roni as authors. They love your style, LOVE your platforms and think you’re a winning combination. The main hangup right now, is that this book doesn’t have that one big dieting hook that will draw people."

Now, I realize I never told you exactly what the book is about so her comment may seem like a disappointment but it’s not. It’s exactly what I wanted to here!

Well, not exactly, but it didn’t bother me in the least bit.

Let me ‘splain.

No, there is too much. Let me sum up.

The book we are pitching is a journal of sorts. It’s not a "diet" book. It’s not a "look how we lost so much weight" book. It’s part inspiration, part journal, part resource. We share our experience and coach readers to make small changes in the way they think about food, fitness and confidence.

In a way, we are writing this book in response to the hundreds, if not thousands, of books out there that make outlandish claims and prey on our insecurities. The ones that tell us we can lose X number of pounds in X many days. The ones the outline yet another eating plan or exercise routine. The ones we keep buying in to because we are seduced by their empty promises when really our problem lies much deeper.

So when a publisher tells me they are not interested in my book because it "doesn’t have that one big dieting hook" I smile because that’s the point.

The Hook is… There is no Hook!

I’m tired of hooks.

Aren’t you?

Bikini Body Blaster! 20-Minute Tailor Made Workout (with video) For All You Beautiful People Out There

I’m an extremely lazy busy woman. And that means on some days, I have less than 30 minutes to put in work for the Bikini Body Challenge. I shared this time squashing problem with the man-blogger that is Rog Law (who is also a Personal Trainer and Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach) and forced asked him to create a tailor-made workout for the people of YumYuckytopia (that’s you and me) that can be done in as little as 20 minutes. So are you ready to workout!?

Watch Rog in this quick 2-minute video tutorial that showcases all the moves, then read on for his full explanatory breakdown of the workout.

Bodacious Bikini Body Blaster

When it comes to working out consistently, finding enough time is one of the main hurdles that most people face, but have no fear for I am here to help! The following workout requires no fanciful equipment or major investment of your time, so as long as you’re willing to kick it up a few notches for the entire session, you will be handsomely rewarded for your efforts. Alright Yuckers and Yucketts, no more chatting – it’s time to get your sexy on!

The Workout: Starting with A (below), perform each exercise in order for the prescribed number of reps, taking only as much rest as you need to before moving on to the next one. Once you reach the end, cycle back through the exercises again until the allotted time expires. Make sure to mark down how many total reps of each exercise you perform and aim to beat this number the next time you repeat this workout. Rest 2 minutes before moving onto the next series and repeating the same process.

Here is a breakdown of how this would look:

A (10 – 15 minutes)

Elevated Torso Pushup – 5 repsGoblet Squat Presses – 5 squats + 5 press = 1 rep (5 reps total)Seal Jumping Jacks – 25 repsLeg Lowering – 5 each

Rest 2 Min

B (10 – 15 minutes)

Mountain Climbers – 20 each legHalf Kneeling Curl To Press – 5 each armStability Ball Deadbugs – 5 each sideWeighted Glute Bridge – 5 reps

Rest 2 Min

C (5 – 10 minute bonus round)

Squat Uppercut – 5 each sideAli Shuffles – 15 per foot

The Weight: For all of the weighted exercises, start with a weight that you think that you could only do 10 times with good form and adjust accordingly if it’s too heavy or light. You’ll notice that you’re only doing 5 reps with that weight, and that’s by design. By the time you get towards the end of the workout, you most likely won’t even be able to perform the 5 reps that you started out with, and that’s fine. Only do as many reps as you can with good form.

Exercise Form Notes

Mountain Climber: Work to minimize badonkadonk bouncing. Keep it as still as possibleLeg Lowering: Make sure to keep your core tight so that your low back is pressed into the floor during the entire movement. Try not to let the leg that you aren’t lowering move at all.Deadbugs: Make sure to keep your core tight so that your low back is pressed into the floor during the entire movement.Weighted Glute Bridge: Only go as high as squeezing your butt will take you – don’t excessively push your hips through in order to use your lower back.Elevated Torso Pushup: Keep your core tight and don’t allow your hips to sag when performing the movement. If it’s too hard or too easy, adjust the height of the incline accordingly.

Now go forth into the world and conquer, but don’t forget to come back here and let me know how badly this workout kicked your buttcheeks!

Drip By Drip, You'll Get There

When my kids asked me to buy them something when they were younger and I told them no, their usual retort was, "But Mom! It only costs $____ dollars!"

How bipolar is the word “only”? I mean, it can make you feel really good about something or it can make you feel really bad. In terms of weight, “I only gained a pound!” is the positive “only” I hear a lot this time of year as people navigate holiday parties and family get togethers. It’s the negative “only” – “I only lost a pound” – that I hear said most often, though, most recently from none other than me.

The other day I got on the scale and saw that I’d lost a half a pound of the five I want to lose, and the first thing I thought, felt and said was wrapped up in the negative “only.”

“I only lost a half pound? Ugh!! When will this stupid weight come off? What am I doing wrong?”

I decided I needed to write myself a quick little pep talk.

“With dripping drops of water, even a water jug is filled.” Dhammapada 121-122

I remember I used this quote in a blog I wrote in January 2009 (“A Slow Steady Drip”), and after stepping off the scale the other day, I meditated on it for awhile before looking back at my weight tracker on Weight Watchers.

I lost 1.386 pounds, on average, every week between Jan. 1, 2005 and March 12, 2007. Many of those weeks were “point-something” losses, but obviously those “only”s added up to some serious poundage.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I said to someone, “You can’t lose 100 without first losing a pound, and you don’t lose a pound without first losing .1, .2 and .3.” Now I have to add a dollar to my own coffer because I need to say it to myself right here, right now.

“Lynn, you’ve challenged yourself to lose five pounds. You’ve lost .5 in a month. That might kick up, or if the trend continues you’ll lose five pounds by August. August is going to come whether you’re losing weight or not, so you may as well settle in, do what you’re doing, stay diligent, and allow the weight to come off the way it wants to: point-something by point-something by point-something.

"Try taking ‘only’ out of your vocabulary and see what happens. Don’t let ‘only’ ruin your efforts or negate what you’ve achieved. Say, ‘I lost a half a pound! Woohoo!’ Drip by drip, you’ll get there.”

Pretty smart, eh? Now let’s see if I follow my own advice…
