Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals Cracker Chips (Simply Multi-Grain) Review

As I was checking out all the goodies in the supermarket aisle, I came across Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals Simply Multi-Grain Cracker Chips. I remember reviewing Special K Cracker Chips recently, so I wondered if this would be similar. On the PF website, this is described as, "the next best thing in snacking. All the goodness of a whole grain cracker baked into a crunchy little chip ... one tasty combination! With 60% less fat than the leading potato chip and all the delicious flavor you crave, go ahead and crunch naturally."

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 30 grams (27 pieces)
Calories: 140
Total Fat: 4 grams, 6%
Saturated Fat: 0.5 grams, 3%
Sodium: 210 mg, 9%
Carbohydrates: 24 grams
Fiber: 2 grams, 8%
Sugars: 3 grams
Protein: 1 gram

What I found is that this is very different from Special K Cracker Chips in both taste and texture. The Pepperidge Farms Multi-Grain Cracker Chips are smaller, thinner, rectangular in shape but curvy on one side - whereas the Special K ones were like round discs. The PF Cracker Chips are pretty sturdy, salty, yet with a subtly sweet multi-grain taste. I really liked them and could definitely see myself eating this instead of potato chips.

Each serving of Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals Simply Multi-Grain Cracker Chips provides 140 calories from 4 grams of saturated fat, 0.5 grams of which is saturated (6% and 3% of the daily value), 210 mg of sodium (9% of the DV), 2 grams of fiber, 3 grams of sugars and 1 gram of protein.

The ingredients list starts with corn flour, vegetable oils, wheat and brown sugar. On the front of the packaging, this states that this has 60% less fat than the leading potato chip. I don't know what the leading potato chip is, but this does indeed have 60% less fat than Lays Classic Potato Chips BUT also more ingredients (including things like monocalcium phosphate and sodium acid pyrophosphate), whereas for Lays it's simply potatoes, vegetable oils and salt. That's something to think about - is the purity of the ingredients more important than 6 grams more of total fat, especially since Lays only has 0.5 grams more saturated fat? Or maybe you don't eat chips or "cracker chips" at all.

I purchased a bag of Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals Simply Multi-Grain Cracker Chips for $2.49 and I would buy it again. I didn't run through these like I would have potato chips.

The Simply Bar (Cinnamon)

The Simply Bar

Lately I've been really into The Simply Bar. Sure, they're $2.59 per bar, but they taste delicious, are loaded with protein, and have only a few ingredients. Plus, they're gluten-free & dairy. I've tried (and liked) the Peanut Butter Chocolate flavor, and I was especially curious about the Cinnamon variety, so I picked one up to see what the deal was.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 bar (40 grams)
Calories: 150
Total Fat: 2 grams, 4%
Saturated Fat: 0.5 grams, 1.5%
Sodium: 220, 8%
Carbohydrates: 16 grams
Fiber: 1 grams, 4%
Sugars: 10 grams
Protein: 18 grams

Basically, this tastes like a delicious mix between a Rice Krispy treat and a cinnamon raisin cookie ... yes, it's that good! The amount of cinnamon added is perfect - just even to give a detectable and pleasant flavor; and the raisins are a wonderful touch to give a pop of sweetness as well as textural intrigue. I thought I was eating dessert - all for just 150 calories! This bar is quite chewy which makes eating it take just that much longer (and makes it more satisfying, in my opinion).

Each 40 gram Cinnamon flavor of The Simply Bar provides 150 calories, 2 grams of fat, of which 0.5 grams is saturated), 1 gram of fiber, 10 grams of sugars and 18 grams of protein. The ingredients include, soy crisps (soy protein, tapioca starch, salt), organic agave nectar, organic brown rice syrup, organic canola oil, raisins, and natural flavor.

This is one of my favorite protein bars. Even my beloved NuGo Free Bars (also gluten-free), like the NuGo Free Carrot Cake Bar do not have as much protein - though they are just as tasty.

The Simply Bar (Peanut Butter Chocolate)

On my quest to go milk- and gluten-free this past week, I've found that my snack and nutrition bar options are quite limited. Some bars (like ThinkThin) are gluten-free but contain milk, and others are lactose-free but have gluten. What was I to do? Enter The Simply Bar, a company that advertises its products as being gluten-free, lactose-free, vegan, and low glycemic index.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 bar (40 gram
Calories: 160
Total Fat: 3 grams, 5%
Saturated Fat: 1 grams, 5%
Sodium: 165, 7%
Carbohydrates: 16 grams
Fiber: 1.5 grams, 4%
Sugars: 10 grams
Protein: 16 grams

One caveat: these bars are pretty expensive. I paid $2.49 for a Peanut Butter Chocolate flavor of The Simply Bar. As for the taste, it's simply fantastic. While these bars aren't as thick and big as some others, they are quite chewy and immensely satisfying. The all-natural ingredients make for a wonderful-tasting combination of chocolate and peanut butter and anyone else who is a fan of this combination will not be disappointed.

Each 40 gram bar provides 160 calories, 3 grams of fat, 1 gram of which is saturated (5% of the daily value), 1.5 grams of fiber, 10 grams of sugar and 16 grams of protein!

More impressive than the nutritionals - hello 16 grams of protein - is the wholesome ingredients list. It includes, Soy Crisps (Non GMO soy protein, Tapioca starch, salt), Organic Agave Nectar, Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Peanut Butter, Organic Fair Trade Cocoa, Natural Flavor.

I much prefer the The Simply Bar (Peanut Butter Chocolate) to the Cocoa Coffee flavor, in fact, I wish I had bought more.

Tasting! Simply Fruit Roll Ups

Men who wear blue panties really know their stuff.

The “Simply” line of edibles is spreading like a HAZMAT olive oil spill. So now I vote for it to go beyond those buttermilk biscuits and these Simply Fruit Roll-Ups to spread into other areas of my life. Like, Simply Gettin’ Big Money. And Simply Sleepin’ in Late.

Won’t they package that, please?

I’m damn near incapacitated from Greedy Baby biting my finger (complete with bloodshed). And I’m gonna sue. So I’ll be basic and only partially frivolous so I can get back to Tweeting my lawyer.

Simply Fruit Roll Ups are a refreshing breed of all things Rolled. That artificial bright red look is gone (it’s much darker) with its “more than 90% fruit juice and real fruit”. It’s strawberry-ish. It’s appley. But NOT as stretchy-rubbery as the original.

Go on and test drive it with your Foot Trap for a burst of fruitiness without the BS ingredients. I was glad when I found ‘em, because Greedy Kid #3 keeps b!tching for more variety in his lunchbox. I wish somebody would pack ME a damn lunch.

ROLLED NOTES

Price Paid: $2.89 for 10-packCalories: 50Fat Calories: 5Total Fat: 0.5gSodium: 20mgCarbs: 12gFiber: less than 1gProtein: 0g

REACTIONS FROM THE TASTE TEST CREW

Health-hater Husband: Not too bad. It’s not bright red like the other kind.

Greedy Kid #1: I’d rather have the artificial kind I grew up on.

Greedy Kid #2: I can’t tell the difference.

Greedy Kid #3: It’s so good, I can’t stop eating it.

Yum UP! to: Settling lawsuits out of court. Greedy Baby better do the right thing.

Yuck Down to: Children who gnaw on their parents. I’m might lose an arm one day.
