A Quick Update and 4 Inspiring Women!

I’m in Chicago and I have so much I want to tell you but I’m literally falling asleep as I type. So I’ve got to make this one of my quick bullet point posts. Here goes…

1. I started my day with Sara Rosso doing a CrossFit workout at River North and it was INSANE! I loved every minute of it but injured my hand a little doing kettle bell swings. :(

Screen shot 2013-07-26 at 12.55.02 AM

2. I got a Fitbit!! I’m so excited. I’m going to try to wear it and track everything the next few days just to really see how it works. I’m such a dork about these things. I find them really fun.

3. I spoke at HealthMinder on the Panel Fad to Foundation. It was fun but I’m not sure how it went. There were only a few people in the room and I wasn’t sure they were all that interested.

4. Jen and I had quite the adventure on the way to the expo this evening…

Screen shot 2013-07-26 at 12.53.26 AM

Let’s just way we’re not big fans of conferences offsite from the hotel.

5. My favorite panel of the day was called Weight vs. Health. I knew most of the panelists from their sites but hearing them speak was VERY inspiring. If you have a minute you should really check them out…

OK, must go. Tomorrow morning is the BlogHer 5k!

Jumping in Quick for Wednesday Weigh In!

Sorry guys! I didn’t forget about you. I just had a busy morning. Normally I weigh in real quick and either get this post up before my workout or after depending on how prepared I am. Sometimes I have lunches made, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I get up late sometimes I don’t. Sometimes the baby sleeps in sometimes he doesn’t.

My point is: It’s a crapshoot.

To compound the typical morning craziness, this morning I volunteered at Little Guy’s school for their Jump-Rope-a-Thon. It was a blast! Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, I don’t have a photo because I was too busy jumping!
I was reminded yet again that All the Hard work is Really Worth it! <--that post is almost 5 years old and I still get a tear reading it.

So I may be late but have no fear, I will always post, you may just have to hold on to your weigh-ins for a few hours until I catch up.

Here’s my scale reading from this morning.

20130130_weighin

Actually up .6 from my DietBet weigh in but that’s nothing. I’ve been pretty much maintaining this weight for a few weeks now which I’m totally ok with. Between my trip to Italy and working out as much as I have been (lots of crossfit – planning on posting about it soon) I’m actually surprised the scale isn’t up a bit more. Note: I tend to increase slightly is weight when weight training.

So how are you doing? Let everyone know how your week was in the comments. Remember, including a scale reading is your choice!

Oh! and in case you missed it, I failed my first dietBet but I’m at it again! Click here for the details!

A Quick Photo Shoot Wednesday Weigh-In

That’s me! All dolled up for today’s photo shoot. It was fun and painless! Everyone was so nice and we were done in a few hours. Even after sneaking the baby in a few shots. :)

I hope to be able to share some of the pictures but we may have to wait until the issue comes out. It will be the October issue of FIRST. I’m not sure I’ll see any before then myself.

Besides the shoot I did nothing except hang out with the baby.

and run 3 miles.

I was planning on a weight training session but I just didn’t have it in me. Maybe tomorrow or Friday.

As for weigh in, the scale read… 156

That’s .6 down from last week. Not bad. Now bad at all! I updated my weight progress page.

ok, that’s all I have. I need sleep and want a snack before bed!

whole wheat English muffin and some blueberriesGrabbed one real fast before the shootI love having leftover pork to make this sandwhich! Out for dinner: edamame, seaweed salad, a brown rice sushi, and some bites of crispy beefWe have a bit of a Wed going out to eat tradition now. It helps break up the week and gives me a break from cooking. could have done better. Off to take vitamin now.

A Quick and “Linky” Monday Post

Hello from the other side of chocolate hell! I made it through Easter relatively unscathed by the malted milk ball/Reese’s Peanut Butter egg/Cadbury/Lindt/Dove/chocolate-bunnies-on-a-motorcycle onslaught. Phew! I wish I could say the same about the cheesy potatoes at Cassie’s house and the ones I made for Mark and his kids, but that’s why there’s exercise. And restraint. The carb fest was a one-day event and its remnants will only linger a day or two.

I read some potentially good news on the clothing size front this morning in the New York Times. In “One Size Fits Nobody: Seeking a Steady 4 or a 10,” Stephanie Clifford writes about a company that offers a full body scan to determine what size you would fit into in a number of major clothing stores. It’s a good start, but I’d like to see standardized sizing like they have in Europe. In the meantime, I wouldn’t mind trying the scan. I get so frustrated trying on jeans especially.

“Some brands are taking their own approaches to make the fitting room less demoralizing. Mary Alderete, vice president for women’s global marketing at Levi’s, said, ‘When we try on 10 pairs of jeans to buy one, the reason you feel bad is because you think something’s wrong with you.’”

Exactly. I have size 6, 8 and 10 jeans in my closet and they all fit. These aren’t my “skinny” or “fat” day jeans. They each measure the same waist and hip size. So frustrating that I have to go through so many sizes in each brand to find what works. I know I’m not alone.

Don’t even get me started on vanity sizing…

If you haven’t listened yet, I was recently interviewed by the awesome duo of Carla (MizFit) and Shauna (The Amazing Adventures of Diet Girl) for their podcast Two Fit Chicks and a Microphone! It was by far my favorite interview ever. LOVE those two, AND…I get to meet them next month at FitBloggin ’11! Any of you bloggers going?

Speaking of bloggers, I've recently been turned on to The Healthy Skeptic written by Chris Kessler, an accupuncturist and Chinese medicinal practitioner. I've been enjoying his series "9 Steps to Perfect Health," especially #9: Practice Pleasure:

“In their book Feeling Good Is Good For You, researchers Carl J. Charnetski and Francis X Brennan set out to review the emerging evidence that pleasure can boost our immune systems and lengthen our lives. According to the authors: ‘In every way, stress is the antithesis of pleasure. It jangles your nerves, juggles a whole host of your body’s hormones, elevates your blood pressure, and makes your pulse race… It also weakens your immune system’s ability to resist illness and disease.’“If stress is the antithesis of pleasure, then it follows that pleasure is the antithesis of stress. So the best way to fight stress is with pleasure.”I know I'm guilty of reserving pleasure for when I feel I "deserve" it. But deriving and enjoying some bit of pleasure every day should not be a reward. It is necessary for our emotional and physical health.

Today's bit of pleasure for me will be planting a few pansies, my favorite annual. What will you do for yourself today?

One final link. My favorite quote this week comes from Cammy over at Tippy Toe Diet: "This mindful living thing can sure get in the way of a good time sometimes." Yes, yes it can :)

Happy spring, everyone! Hope you all get some much-deserved outdoor time in the upcoming days.

5 Quick Weight Loss Tips That Deliver Results | Weight Loss ...

5 Quick Weight Loss Tips that Deliver Results

stop wasting your time with get-rid-of-excess-weight ideas that really don’t work. if they sound too good to be true, then they probably are. So quit daydreaming about having your dream figure and continue reading. Below are five quick weight loss tips that actually work.

have a regular dose of exercise. Fitness experts suggest for you have at least 20 minutes of exercise daily, not less than 5 times a week. The best routines for burning fats are cardio or aerobic ones. These are activities that raise your heart and respiratory rate, like walking, running, biking, dancing, swimming, etc.

Add weight lifting program to your exercise. You may hit the gym and seek out the help of a fitness instructor. or you may buy a set of weights and learn routines from fitness magazines and online sources. Building muscles is a great way to burn excess calories and fats.

Eat small frequent meals. Starving yourself to death won’t work. Other than being dangerous to your health, it also shuts down your metabolic rate. Such will make losing weight even more difficult. instead, eat 5-6 small meals throughout the day. this will keep your metabolism always working.

Consume lots of protein sources. Protein requires more energy to be digested, which equates to more calories burned. It’s also a great way to maintain muscle mass right after you pump iron. Go for healthy protein choices such as lean meat cuts, chicken without the skin, fish and legumes.

Eat fiber-rich foods and drink plenty of water. Fiber prevents you from overeating by making you feel full faster and longer. Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of fiber. Additionally, drinking plenty of water does the same effects. it also helps keep you hydrated and energized.

There’s no denying that these quick weight loss tips are effective. however, it will take some dedication on your part to stick to these tips until you get satisfactory result.

6 Quick and Easy Healthy, High-Protein Snacks

EggsWhen we are trying to lose weight, the temptation is to eat less, but, in fact, the smart strategy is to eat more -- well, more often, actually. Eating small snacks at regular intervals prevents you from becoming famished at any point during the day. It's when we are "starving" that we are most likely to reach for unhealthy foods and overeat.

The same goes for when we come in from a workout. The temptation is to raid the fridge or cabinets. Snacking at intervals before (and even during) exercise prevents this. Eating regular, small portions keeps your blood sugar stable and helps your body to recognize hunger cues. And of course, no matter how often or infrequently you eat, the name of the game is making the right choices.

I discuss this issue in more detail in my upcoming book, Flavor First, which is also chock full of prepare-ahead snacks and apps that you can make. In the meantime, below are six quick and healthy high-protein snacks that will keep you on the right track. Each has near a 150 calories and provides more than 10 grams of protein.

Good Eggs: "Deviled Eggs" -- 3 hard boiled egg halves, whites only, each half filled with 1 tablespoon hummus (140 calories, 10 grams protein)

Green Gobbling: 2/3 cup edamame in the shell (158 calories, 13 grams protein)

String Theory: 1 low-fat mozzarella cheese stick and 1 large fresh orange (140 calories, 10 grams protein)

Rye Society: 2 Wasa Rye Crackers and 2-1/2 ounces lox (smoked salmon) (150 calories, 14 grams protein)

Gobble, Gobble: Half a turkey sandwich 1 slice whole grain bread with 1 ounce turkey, 1 slice low-fat Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and 2 teaspoons mustard (150 calories, 14 grams protein)

Greece-y Spoon: 2/3 cup non-fat Greek yogurt plus 1/2 cup blueberries and 1 tablespoon almonds (150 calories, 15 grams protein)

Quick Sensational Sunday Bullets With Pictures

We had such a Sensational Sunday I barely have the energy to post about it. SO here’s the cliff notes version with pictures. :)

The morning started slow. I actually had a whole hour to myself before anyone got up. It was wonderful! I decided to get some writing done and posted about kid friendly iPad Games.

Once little man woke up we decided to make Banana Oatmeal Cups with Chocolate Chips which–shameless plug here–is a recipe in my new book!

As you can see we made them in our mess of a kitchen which was chock full of matchbox cars. Those cars amused the 5 year old for about an hour. It was amazing. The muffins baked and cooled. I emptied the dishwasher, enjoyed my daily grapefruit, and set up our new phones all while he stood at the end of the counter with the cars.

I’m simultaneously loving and hating 5. More on that later.

Afterwards we looked thru some new books we bought yesterday. The little guy is in the pre-reading stage so we got him the Scooby-Doo Phonics Box Set
.

We read one tonight. It’s amazing to watch someone learn to read. It’s totally something I think a lot of us take for advantage.

I finally purchased Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day based on a few recommendations from GreenLiteBites and the husband got some new Lego Mindstorm books….

Did I tell you we crossed the lined into total geek parents? That’s right we are learning to make robots…

Today the husband figured out how to control it via bluetooth with his phone. Both husband and child were running around the house shooting little color balls all over the place. It was hysterical!

Soon it was lunch time. The toddler had some leftover lo mein and I made myself a chicken cheesesteak wrap. It was delicious but none of my pictures came out so I can’t show you. :(

After lunch my friend and I took Little Guy to the Pet Expo at the fair grounds. We spent all afternoon walking around the vendors and hanging out with the animals.

Of course we got some snacks too. :)

When we got home it was time for dinner. We made tacos and then headed out for a family grocery trip. When we got back it was bath and bed for little guy which proved to be a test of wills. It’s hard to explain but I completely lost it with him. He’s been so argumentative lately and I simply won’t stand for a 5 year old talking back to me. Just thinking about it makes my blood boil.

After I cooled down we had a nice conversation and read a few books before bed. As I said, I’m simultaneously loving and hating 5. He’s fun and smart and just a joy to be around except for when he’s not. I’m sure other parents can relate.

After story I came down to a living room of laundry and a depressed cat…

Just look at her…

The snow and cold are totally crimping her style. She’s been moping around the house for weeks now.

Right now I’m still sitting in that room full of laundry about to fall asleep. It was an awesome day but now I must go to bed. Oh! but NOT before I brush my teeth! ;)

What kind of weight loss pill works best for teens? | Free Quick ...

Question by yuyu: What kind of weight loss pill works best for teens?
I’m looking for a weight loss pill, that’s safe for teens, that actually helps. And don’t try to sell me that crap about how a ‘pill doesn’t work.’ Your not persuading anyone, and your wasting MY time. Anyways, I need a pill that’ll help me loose weight. Of course, I’m going to also accompany that with diet and exercise.

Best answer:

Answer by batraylover
Go with Alli, it’s the only one approved by the FDA for actual weight loss, and deemed “safe”. Of course, they’ve deemed many things safe over the years that were later recalled, so take it at your own risk. Personally, I don’t believe that any of them work, but that’s my opinion, and I’m entitled to it, as you are entitled to your opinion. If you don’t want to go with Alli, I recommend that you check out the ratings at: http://www.consumerpricewatch.net/

the best option is to have a friend/family member that you see routinely, unless you want to pay for like a personal trainer at a gym or a nutritionist’s visits
