National Adoption month.

The essay below is from my 2012 appearance in Austin’s Listen To Your Mother Show.

The entire experience was unforgettable–but nothing more so than seeing the pride on my child’s face as I shared our story.  Recently, as we chatted about National Adoption Month, she expressed her excitement for our *dear* friend Sarah & how cool it is one of her new Oakland BFFs is adopted from Guatemala, too.

We looked through pictures.  We talked about adoption.  We brainstormed/listed all the various ways families are created. We watched the LTYM video again.

Im sharing today.  At her request.  It’s her story.

1378883 10152302636934466 897558936 n 300x300 National Adoption month. Life in Guatemala

People frequently ask me if my daughter knows she’s adopted.

They tend to ask in front of her using stage-whispers which make me long to point out she’s six, she’s not deaf.

It’s odd to even consider the notion that when I was young, parents decided when and how and whether to tell their children they were adopted.  It’s baffling to me how common it was  for children to have this news thrust upon them at age 5 or 8 or, if the rumblings I heard around junior high school were true, even as old as 13.

Thankfully things have changed.

The majority of adopted children grow up having a sense of always “just knowing” their story.

Rather than being something silenced and secret it’s told over & over in the same fashion biological children ask to hear their birth story repeated.

Adopted children ask the same questions each time and find the same comfort in hearing the answers recited the exact.same.way. each time the story is re-told.

I’ll never forget when we got your referral pictures…” our story begins.  “Your dad was working late and I could not WAIT for him to get home so I could open the email.  I *barely* waited till he came home.  I sat on the couch, computer on lap, finger hovering over the word OPEN so the moment he walked in the door I could click and you’d be there INSTANTLY and forever a part of our family.

And then? Tell me about the necklace,  Mama.

And then, after we’d sent everyone we knew your perfect picture and told them what we’d decided to name you, I had a necklace made.  Right then.  That night.  Thank G-d for online shopping.  I made a tiny charm with your picture on it and I vowed to wear it until you were home with us forever.

And the Buddha? Tell me how someone thought I was the Buddha.

I wore the necklace from the moment it arrived and I never took it off.  Not to shower. Not when I got “fancy.”  Never.  The days dragged and the red tape wrapped around your adoption file and the necklace remained around my neck.  Most days I forgot I had it on even as I absentmindedly rubbed and fiddled with the piece of silver until the picture was there but it was smeary and fingerprinted.

And the Buddha, Mama? That part?

And one day I was waiting impatiently in a grocery line (rubbing and fiddling. Fiddling and rubbing.) when a woman turned to me and said: that’s the most lovely Buddha necklace I believe I have ever seen.

And you didn’t wanna embarrass her did you, Mama?

I didn’t, BabyGirl.  Your eyes were closed, the picture was tiny and I kept you with me for strength and calm.  In a way you were *my* Buddha.  I just smiled and said thank you.

Screen shot 2013 11 08 at 12.16.48 PM 227x300 National Adoption month. The Buddha and the necklace

Tell me about Guatemala, Mama.  Did you go there and look around and say I’ll take the girl with the black hair, mama?

Do you love movies as I do, BabyGirl?

Yes.

Are you afraid of thunder as I was when I was a girl?

Yes.

Do you love to dance and sing and write as I do, BabyGirl?

I do Mama I do.

You were meant to be my girl.  And I was meant to be your mom.

Tell me about the first time we met, Mama. Tell me about the blankeys.

You were tiny, BabyGirl. Teeny tiny and your foster mom had you wrapped in more blankets and layers than I’d seen in a lifetime.

Tell me how excited you were , Mama.  About how you held me.

With all the words in the world, BabyGirl there isn’t one that describes how excited I was.  I unwrapped and unwrapped you and I held you.   And I held you.

Tell me about how you had to leave me there,  Mama. Tell me about crying and Texas and about coming back for me.  Tell me how you came back for me.

I did, BabyGirl.  I treasured our visits. I was grateful we could visit and I hated our goodbyes.   I cried.  I cried big deep sobs from the bottom of my belly from a place I didn’t know I had. From a place marked BabyGirl.

And then you came back…

And then I came back.  I grew tired of the waiting and I longed to be with you.   I brought my stuff and your stuff and I came back to stay.  And we waited there together.  And we counted the weeks. And we measured the months.  And we unwound the red tape until finally—

Until finally I could come to Texas and be home.

Yes, BabyGirl until you could finally come to Texas and be home.

I live a public life.  A very transparent life.

I’m a professional blogger and I let it all hang out online—the good and the bad— in a decidedly open fashion.

I don’t much mention my daughter’s adoption story online because I feel it is her story to tell.

Because of this fact people frequently ask *me* if my daughter knows she’s adopted.

She knows she’s adopted.

She knows her story.

And maybe, someday, if you’re very good and very patient and ask the right questions at the proper time she’ll share it with you, too.

MizFit (surprise) Commenter of the Month:

(cick on karen’s lovely locks if youre already READY to leave me for her. I understand.)

Please to me February’s Commenter of the Month the fabulous Waisting Time Karen!

I’ve read her blog since its inception and, for sake of sharing her awesomenessment, I shall pretend you’ve never clicked her way for a visit.

Yet.

Getting the first things out of the way, I experience pangs of envy at time from Karen’s posts and comments.

We’re not too far apart in age, but she’s already raised two amazing boys whereas Im old and tired just getting started.

I adore the way she writes & was heartened to find she’s an editor as well.  She blogs, puts away, rereads, edits and THEN posts.   I do the same (though admittedly it’s more evident in Karen’s flow) and may have cried had I learned her lovely lilting prose went immediately from fingertips to PUBLISH.

She may not see it—but she’s a weight-loss & fitness inspiration.

Shes honest about her perceived shortcomings (one of my faves being her experience with P90x & I like to pretend she never returned to it.  Makes me feel better about myself), her struggle with snacking (especially in the evenings. I can relate), & is always ready with a word of encouragement or NEEDED REMINDER.

And her Thumbs Up Thumbs Down posts? The only big.thumbs.down. I give is to the fact I wasnt creative enough to have thought of it first.

I adore Karen.

Her way of writing, her humor, and the comments she leaves for me…for *us* here.

I appreciate Karen.

I encourage you, if when you opened this post you thought: KAREN WHO??, to click on over and say hello.

I promise you wont be sorry you did…

MizFit Commenter of the Month goes to….

Ahh People.

Back in the day—if you’ll grant me for this post that 2009 was the day–I did a Commenter of the Month blog post.

I cant speak for you, but I adored these posts.

I reached out to a  consistent commenter (whether she had a blog of her own or not!) and emailed her a list of questions.

Random, serious, snarky, silly, seeking her wisdom kind of questions.

I ceased doing this when *I* became more busy.

I put myself in the place of the reader receiving my email and thought:

I do NOT want to be the proverbial straw which breaks her too life-busy back!  We’re all stretched so thin these days I don’t want to give someone yet ANOTHER assignment.

The thing is, I have missed these posts (again I can’t speak for you. Id love you to speak for you in the comments) so Im bringing them back and would welcome your input as I do.

First, however, I wanna introduce you to JODY.

I wish I could remember when we first met (Ill blame that on the fact MizFit turns 5 next month and not the fact I turned 42.5 yesterday), but I can not.

It feels as though Ive known her forever and yet, as with so many virtual friends, we’ve never met in real life.

Jody is one of the most supportive women Ive ever encountered.

She’s a cheerleader for so many of us.

She’s always the first to congratulate on successes and encourage when we need a kind word.

She makes me believe I can keep getting better as I age.

That I will, as she has, grow stronger, wiser, more loving, and more beautiful inside and out.

Her blog is filled with fitness tips (warning! she’s weights-crazy as I am! I like to think that may be the KEY to her badass physique.), recipes ( yeah. we’re alike here too.), product reviews (she loves those Hokas. Ive never seen those Hokas) & GRATITUDE (this final one is, IMO, the key to staying young at heart).

And she has no idea Im profiling her today.

And that, alone, makes me love this post.

The very thought of her clicking through and stumbling upon it & the very *hope* it will bring a smile to her face as she has done for so many of us.

And yeah. If reading her isnt part of your healthy living routine this misfit firmly believes youre missing out.

Which all leads me back to you.

Are you as slammed busy as I imagine? Would you sigh audibly at an email from me filled with mind-challenging queries like “what celebrity would play you in the movie version of your life?”

Or are you thisclose to jam-packed yet still have a little bit of time to ponder brain-bending issues like ‘ if you had to choose one meal to eat for breakfast for the rest of your life—what would it be?”

Please to share your wisdom (& Jody love) in the comments below…

Finish It Monday: One Month Down! It’s Time To Self-Critique What You’ve Done So Far

Me, after Insanity. Not sure how I was able to crack a smile. LOL!

Depending on when you started with us, you are now either one month into the Finish What You Started Challenge, or you’re just now joining in and ready to ROAR! (and a big ‘ole hello to all of our newest participants!)

The Challenge ends on October 31st, so you’ve got two more months to reach your goal, or, for you long term goal peeps, the Challenge is for you to remain consistent and end the cycle of stopping and re-starting with what you intend to Finish. Right?

(Download and view Week #5's message on the Star System Tracking Chart.)

This is your assignment for this week to earn 3 bonus stars for a total of 31 maximum for the week! 28 stars + 3 bonus stars = 31

Earn one bonus star gnawing on 3 or more salads.Earn 2nd bonus star for continuing with your pushups. I really wanna see you guys be able to celebrate some big time push ups progress when this is all over!Earn 3rd bonus star by evaluating what you’ve done since the Challenge began – a positive, honest critique of yourself (not self-judgement that brings guilt) – and then make any tweaks to your fitness and eating routines as necessary.

More On Evaluating Your Current Progress And Taking An Honest Look At What You’ve Done So Far

Okay, okay, I’ll go first so you can see how this is done….

Fitness: You probably already know I’m doing Insanity (it’s in my Beachbody shop), but the workout calendar is very rigorous. Maybe a bit too rigorous sometimes. It’s delivering quick results as promised (big time results!), but it can also be physically and mentally challenge to the point where the urge to quit pop ups in my brain a little too often. Noooo!!! So in order to prevent those urges to quit completely, I recently decided to do Insanity every other day (with a different workout in between) instead of two Insanity days back to back. This fitness critique/tweak means it will take me longer to complete the entire program (boo), BUT it’s working out better for me, because it’s eliminated my urge to quit completely, AND I discovered that a rest day in between Insane workouts actually enables me to perform at a high level and push harder on my Insanity days.

Eating: It sucks sometimes. Usually when I’m bored. I don’t get bored that often because of my happy-crazy-busy life, but when boredom does creep up, I’m capable of downing a whole day’s worth of calories before noon. Oh, hell no! So how do I fix this? I’ve decided to plan/pack food even when I’m home from work on the weekends. WeekDAY food planning has always worked for me at about a 95% success rate, so why do I abandon this concept on the weekends? No more weekend self-sabotage for me. The majority of my weekend eating will be planned ahead of time from now on, as much as possible. If I get bored and want to chew, my food selections will already be pre-determined.

These self-critiques did not reveal that I’m a loser. They do not prove that I can’t stick to a plan. It does not mean that I have to abandon all. It simply reveals that my plan needed tweaking.

So do you see how this works? Now it’s your turn. Go grabs your stars and make it a great week!

Word-less Wednesday: 8th Month POP!

I have been volunteering in my son’s gym class on and off every Wednesday since October–even going last week. Today was the first day all the kids asked if I’m having a baby. I wonder why…

Word-less Wednesday: 8th Month POP!

P.S. I walked about 3 miles there and back and felt FANTASTIC! The weather is finally breaking and I hope to get a lot more outside strolls in these last 2 months.
