Dominex Veggie Fries Review

Dominex Veggie Fries

Dominex Veggie Fries are described as breaded Italian style eggplant fries ... with 65% less sodium than the leading brand of French Fries. There's a lot of underlying themes going on with this product - well, more like the things I made up in my head - but still, I sense an Italian vs. French fries battle and a eggplant vs. potato fries match-up.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 85 grams (12 pieces)
Calories: 160
Total Fat: 9 grams, 14%
Saturated Fat: 1.5 grams, 8%
Sodium: 80 mg, 3%
Carbohydrates: 17 grams
Fiber: 4 grams, 16%
Sugars: 2 grams
Protein: 2 grams

If this were an Italian vs French war, then the French would have won. But don't get me wrong, it wouldn't have been a massacre, as the Dominex eggplant fries aren't too bad. They are thick, like crinkle cut fries, and when eaten hot (not burn your tongue hot of course), then the contrast between the crispy outside and softer "mushy eggplant" interior was pleasant. But as the fries cooled, the softer texture took over and it just wasn't appealing anymore. I like Dominex Eggplant Burgers, but the fries I'm really not a fan of unfortunately. Potatoes win!

A serving of Dominex provides 160 calories, 9 grams of total fat, 1.5 grams of which is saturated (14% and 8% of the DV), 80 mg of sodium (3% of the DV), 4 grams of fiber, 2 grams of sugars and 2 grams of protein. The ingredients list includes, eggplant, soybean oil, wheat flour, water, corn starch, spices, garlic powder, dehydrated parsley, onion powder, extracts of paprika and annatto, and natural flavors.

For comparison, a 84 gram serving of Ore Ida Golden Crinkles, provides 120 calories, 3.5 grams of total fat, 2 grams of which is saturated (6% and 9% of the DV), 310 mg of sodium (9% of the DV), 2 grams of fiber, 2 grams of protein and less than 1 gram of sugars.

I received samples of Dominex Eggplant Fries to review, but the suggested retail price for a 396 gram bag is $4.49.

Dominex Veggie Fries

I do love getting food products to review, but alas, it's always hard to write about something received that I didn't particularly care for, as was the case here. I wouldn't buy this myself - I would stick to either regular potato fries or Alexia Sweet Potato Fries.

Mix it up: Same title, different song

Mixed Tape

I used to make mixed tapes for friends, actual tapes, which is one of those signs that I’ve been on the planet longer than a steadily growing percentage of the population. I make mixed CDs now and don’t even own a tape player, which means I won’t be listening to the recordings of my 6th grade band concert any time soon.

Sometimes I get high-concept ideas for CD mixes, like a mix of songs that track the progress of my life. Or a CD where all the tracks are covers of the same song. My latest concept is “Same Name, Different Song” which consists of songs that have the same name but aren’t covers, just totally different songs. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:

Forever Young – Rod Stewart
Forever Young – Alphaville (Though I personally prefer the Youth Group cover)
Breathe – Erasure
Breathe – Sixpence None the Richer
Breathe – Jane French (The theme from “Passions” oh how I miss you)
Breathe – Maria McKee
Photograph – Weezer
Photograph – REM feat. Natalie Merchant
American Girls – Weezer (No link, sorry!)
American Girl – Tom Petty (Ok, not an exact title match, but close!)
Trouble – Ray Lamontagne
Trouble – Shampoo
Trouble – Shawn Colvin
Blush – Ben Lee
Blush (Only You) – Plumb
Independence Day – Imani Coppola
Independence Day – Ani DiFranco
Dancing in the Dark – Bruce Springsteen
Dance in the Dark – Lady Gaga (Again, not an exact match, but close!)
Heart – Pet Shop Boys
Heart – Stars
The Boxer – Simon and Garfunkel
The Boxer – Carbon Leaf

Can you guys think of any others? If I were a programmer and cared more, I could probably write a script to parse my media library and find all the matches for me, but it’s more fun to ask you guys.

BTW, I realize my last two posts have been about music. I promise this isn’t going to become PQ’s Music Blog. It’s just a coincidence.

Roni’s Pregnancy Week 37 — The Birth!

I snuck in a quick recording session while the Husband was in the shower. We ventured out today. It was nice. Nursing is getting easier and easier and I’m getting a few hours of sleep in between sessions. I also snapped a few more photos. This one I posted on Poop Butterflies is by far my favorite. He’s alert like that about twice a day. I’m in love!

It’s A Guy Thing

Twice in the last few weeks I’ve heard virtually the same weight-loss story. The first time I was in a local restaurant eating dinner and watching a Pens game, when someone yelled across the bar to a guy sitting a few stools down from me, “Hey, you look great! Have you lost weight?”

The guy yells back, “Yeah! 40 pounds!”

“Awesome, dude!”

“Thanks!”

You know me. I couldn’t NOT ask the guy how he did it. After all, if he was willing to yell his weight loss across a crowded bar, I figured I could ask him his story.

“I got my driver’s license picture taken and I didn’t like my face,” he said. “So I decided to lose weight.”

“Just like that?” I asked.

“Yup.”

“How’d you do it?”

“Diet and exercise,” he said.

Two weeks later, I was with some friends in a different bar. Two guys walked in. One ordered a Guinness and the other a Coors Light. I heard Mr. Guinness (rail-thin) ask Mr. Coors Light (slightly overweight) when he had to leave to go work out. Mr. Coors Light said he could have two beers and then he would go home. Work out? On a Friday night?

“Wow, that’s discipline,” I said. “Working out on a Friday night?”

Mr. Guinness jumped in. “This guy here’s lost 40 pounds! Come on, man, tell her.”

“I lost 40 pounds,” Mr. Coors Light laughed. “I’m gonna lose 20 more.”

“Wow, that’s great!” I said. “How did you do it?”

He shrugged and looked at me like, Duh, lady.

“Diet and exercise,” he said.

After his second beer, Mr. Coors Light ordered a hoagie to go for his wife (so sweet!) and said he’d only nibble on a bit of it on the way home, then he was going to hit the treadmill while watching ESPN.

Both men got me thinking, ‘Is this a guy thing?’ Both lost weight just because they decided to, and they did it without Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, LA Weight Loss, NutriSystem, or Optifast. No zone/beach/acai/colon/miracle-pill diets, they just cut back on the hoagies and started working out.

And what about those conversations in public? I know I’ve told my story on Oprah and sundry other places including my blogs, but not without a certain degree of shame, fear and, yes, embarrassment. Even now I cringe when I watch the videos of the shows I’ve been on. If someone yelled from across a crowded room that I looked great and asked if I’d lost weight, I’d be mortified. And I certainly wouldn’t yell back, “Yeah! 170 pounds!” If one of my friends flat out announced to a stranger in a bar that I’d lost weight…again, instant mortification. Yet, the two guys who lost weight seemed completely unfazed by the questions or my inquiries. In fact, they were down right giddy about it. Didn’t bother them one bit.

Go them!

I want to be like them one day – fearless, accepting, and genuinely proud of my accomplishments among strangers who aren’t interested in weight issues. It’s easy to be comfortable talking about weight with people who “get it,” but it’s another to discuss it with, oh say, a potential date. Sure, if I meet someone, I wouldn’t have to tell him about my weight loss, but in this Google-able world, it doesn’t take much to learn my story.

So I need to put on my big girl panties and get comfortable. It can’t be just a guy thing. It has to be a Lynn thing, too.

Hoodia As An Aid To <b>Weight Loss</b> | <b>Weight Loss</b> Helps

Hoodia As An Aid To Weight Loss

Article by Roy Thomsitt

What Is Hoodia?

It is more than 2 years now since hoodia became well known in the public domain. Television programmes on both sides of the Atlantic in 2003/4 saw to that.

If you have not heard of hoodia before, or have but do not really know what it is, let me explain. Hoodia is a cactus-like succulent. I have seen it described as an ugly cactus, but as cacti go, I would say it is about average in the looks department. Not that its looks really matter; you will not be going up to it and giving it a loving hug. You might, however, want to give it a little bite, whether out of curiosity, or because you have heard it can help you lose weight.

I should be a little more precise before I continue. The hoodia plant that has recently been associated with weight loss potential is hoodia gordonii, one of a large group of succulent plants called Asclepiadaceae.

How Can Hoodia Help You Lose Weight?

Hoodia Gordonii grows in the Kalahari desert in Africa, and has done for thousands of years. It clearly thrives in very high temperatures, but it also takes many years to mature. Also living in the same region are the San Tribesmen, or Bushmen. The San are amongst the world’s oldest and most primitive tribes.

The San have been eating hoodia plants for thousands of years. Now, I am sure your vision of an African desert tribe would not be anything like obese Americans or Europeans, for whom hoodia has been mooted as a possible weight loss aid. In fact, you probably imagine quite the opposite, a lithe and slender people struggling to survive on desert morsels. You would be right. How, then, can the San’s inclusion of hoodia in their diet have anything to do with weight loss aids?

The answer is in the reason they have, for all those generations, been eating the hoodia cactus. Their quest for food in the shifting sands of the Kalahari Desert has always meant going on long hunting expeditions. Instant gratification for hunger pangs was not usually on the menu, so with their hunting trips lasting for days, they ate hoodia gordonii because it suppressed those hunger pangs for long periods. No hunger pangs meant no overwhelming desire to eat. That made the whole hunting process that much more bearable.

You are probably now beginning to see how hoodia might come to the aid of the obese and overweight. Those who have trouble controlling their eating urges may have a close ally in Hoodia Gordonii. If a dose of the plant can suppress their desire to eat, to stop them feeling hungry at meal times, then surely they will find it easier to cut back on calorie intake?

That was the theory that sparked scientific studies of Hoodia Gordonii.

fatlosstips.fatloss-tips.nethere are a few tips for you to follow in order to achieve fast, yet healthy weight loss by speeding up your metabolism. 1. Schedule your meals It is important that you schedule your meals so that you get the most out of your food in terms of energy and nutrients, with the least amount of fat being stored in your body. Remember that majority of the calories you eat in a day should be consumed early in the morning. This way, you have lots of energy. It is also ideal to eat four to six small meals instead of three large meals a day to promote better metabolism and fast, easy weight loss. 2.Eat the right foods Eating right is probably the biggest factor in any weight loss diet. Not only should you schedule what you eat, but you should watch what you eat too. It is recommended that you eat lots of spicy foods since they help in speeding up your metabolism as well. 3. Amount of food Another thing to consider in your fast easy weight loss diet is how much you eat. Make sure that you consume the average recommended amount of 2000 calories per day. By doing so, you ensure that your body has enough energy to get through the day but at the same time, you do not store excess fat. 4. Do strength exercises One of the best types of training that you can do if you want to lose weight is strength exercises. This promotes muscle growth which uses up fat cells in your body. In Spite or Despite, Life is Still Good :)

I know, I know…I haven’t blogged since Tuesday. What a crazy week! I was helping out in the Conti Infirmary where everyone – my two g-babies, son-in-law and very pregnant daughter – have been alternately sick the last two weeks. The illness has passed, so they can welcome g-baby #3 into a relatively germ-free house within the next few days. Cassie’s due date is Friday, but she went a few days early with Claire and Luca...so…Monday? Tuesday? So exciting! I brought the kids to the mall on Friday to ride the carousel and those 50-cent rides that jolt kids around for a couple of minutes, but they imagine they’re driving a car or flying a space shuttle. Amazing what joy a roll of quarters will bring a 3- and almost 2-year-old and their Grammy.

The other thing that’s kept me from blogging is the news I got Wednesday from my knee doc. What we thought was just a meniscus tear (something that could be repaired with a simple scope) turned out to be much more, and the knee surgery I had in June, the one we thought bought me at least 5 years with my original equipment, turns out to have been in vain.

I’m getting pretty good at reading MRIs and x-rays. Most anything in bright white isn’t good. No, no, no. You don’t want to see bright white. But we did see bright white. A big old mass of bright white on my upper shin bone, lit up like the Griswold Christmas tree. It was fluid, which means, for lack of a better word, death. The bone, said my doc, is dying.

“We see this in women ages 40-65,” he said. “But usually it’s in women who are heavier than you.”

Doc doesn’t know about my obese past; all the years I spent going up and down the scale. At that moment I figured why tell him? Nothing I said would change the diagnosis.

So I walked out, a little stunned. My five years of reprieve from a total knee replacement is most likely down to 12 months or less. But rather than be angry, I was resigned. Sad, but resigned. I’ve done the anger thing. Anger is like snake oil. It cures nothing.
?
The sign on the exam table in knee doc's office? In April and May 2010, I wrote two blogs about how I live with the consequences of living most of my adult life on a weight roller coaster and more importantly, being morbidly obese for several years.
In the Refuse to Regain post, I wrote: “I haven’t wanted to explore this, mostly because there’s not a damn thing I can do about it now and I can’t change the past. But the question is begging to be asked, the question I’ve avoided since making goal three years ago: Do I have all this arthritis in my knees, shoulders, wrists and toes because I was overweight and obese for so many years? Like stretch marks and loose skin, is arthritis my daily reminder that, for years, I fed my insatiable desire for starches and sweets; gained and lost and gained and lost a lot of weight; and for the most part treated my body like it was separate from me?

“The answer is probably not a resounding ‘Yes’, but it’s not ‘No’ either. I am, in many ways, responsible for the shape of my body now. The choices I made about diet and exercise and the things I declared acceptable (basically ignoring the weight elephant in the middle of the room) accelerated the degeneration of my knees and feet, and perhaps contributed to the degeneration of my wrists and shoulders.

“Even though I give myself a lot of credit for stopping the weight before it got any higher and for losing the weight which has given my other systems better health, here on the other side of weight, displaced anger still exists.”

We all lose weight for a variety of reasons: to avoid heart disease or avoid or regulate diabetes, to look better or fit into a size-smaller wedding dress, to be able to play with our kids, to fit in an airplane seat. All good reasons. But how many of you have lost weight because of the potential for osteoarthritis? My guess is not many. I certainly didn’t have a clue obesity could cause this arthritic mess of a body I’ve got now.

On Lynn’s Weigh last year, I wrote: “Even now, I get angry when I think about what I’ve done to [my body] and for what it can’t do anymore, much of it due to having been morbidly obese. But…I promise myself to do my best to stop the cycle of anger, grief and guilt I put myself through with much frequency. I will do this by journaling more positively and finding alternatives to self-flagellation as solutions to my perceived failings.”

Nearly a year later, I’m…eh…doing OK with stopping the anger cycle before it gets looped around. I try not to live in regret, but it still pops up once in awhile.

My plan now is to: 1) pay close attention to the pain, which right now isn’t too bad; 2) get educated about total knee replacement in “younger” people; 3) play with my grandkids; 4) keep working out; 5) keep my weight stable; 6) don’t beat myself up.

G-baby #3 will arrive soon. Very soon. And right now, despite the knee and wrists and everything else, that’s all that matters.

Life. It’s good. And if I’ve learned nothing else through this, it’s that there’s redemption, regardless of what we’ve done to our bodies or ourselves in the past.

*** I need to add that if you comment about how you know someone who's had a knee replacement and have said it's the best thing they've ever done and they wished they'd done it sooner, let me know how old that person is. 47 is really too young to have a knee replacement because replacements wear out in 7-10 years and the next knee is never as good as the first. You get mileage on the first one, yes you do, but I'm trying to think ahead. I'd love to hear from folks who had TKR in their 40s. Thank you!

How to Count Calories for Guaranteed Weight Loss | Weight Loss-Diets-Weight Diet   How to Count Calories for Guaranteed Weight Loss | Weight Loss-Diets-Weight Diet   How to Count Calories for Guaranteed Weight Loss | Weight Loss-Diets-Weight Diet

If you are wondering how to count calories to lose weight, you are not alone. Most of us know that weight loss can only be achieved when the body burns more calories per day than it consumes, but we seem at a loss to actually implement this formula. Why is it so hard to count calories?

Denial

For many of us, the answer is actually quite simple. We simply refuse to acknowledge the true number of calories that we consume in a day. Sure, we may budget a certain number of calories for each of our meals. But we fail to account for all of the little “nibbles” that we indulge in throughout the day. You know, “just one” cookie here, and a handful of chips there.

If these mini snacks each consist of one hundred calories, we can easily add four to six hundred calories to our daily diet without even realizing it.

Ignorance

Even when we are trying our best to count calories, our efforts can easily be sabotaged without our knowing it. We simply don’t know the number of calories in that Subway sandwich or in Aunt Emma’s famous chili recipe. So we guess. And we usually guess too low. According to the Annals of Internal Medicine, overweight people are even more likely to underestimate the number of calories contained in a meal, making it even more difficult to lose weight.

Lack of a System

But even if you diligently research the calorie count of each meal, and try your best to include every morsel you eat in your daily calorie count, you may be still be wondering how to count calories each day. And for a complete weight loss picture, you also need to track the calories you are burning through increased exercise.

A good tracking system can mean the difference between weight loss success and total diet failure. When it comes to tracking your calories, there are several different systems you can use to reach your diet goals.

Calorie Tracking Systems

The first would be a simple diet journal. Just buy a small notebook and start recording every bite of food that enters your mouth in a given day. You may need to invest in a pocket calorie guide so you can research the correct calorie count of your food.

Eating out? Don’t worry, many restaurants now list the nutritional content of their menu, so it is fairly easy to look up this information on their web sites. Tip: make sure you look up the menu before you eat out, rather than later when it is too late!

If you find the diet journal a little time consuming, you might want to consider using calorie-counting software. Just enter the portion size and type of food into your computer and it will automatically determine your daily caloric intake. You can also use the software to figure out how many additional calories you burn through exercise.

A few of the better software programs even track your water intake and tell you whether or not you are meeting the daily nutritional requirements for critical vitamins and minerals. The best programs will also help you determine a daily calorie budget in order to meet your specified weight loss goal and target date.

The truth is, weight loss is a science. If you eat fewer calories per day than your body requires, it has no choice but to tap your stored fat. The key is to choose and use a tracking system so you are working with complete and accurate information. Now that you know how to count calories, you are guaranteed to lose weight.

The Gifts Behind the Gifts

Each Christmas, I buy a gift for myself. Just a little something I pick up on a whim while shopping. One year it was a small ceramic elf, another was a Christmas cactus, and one year, while looking for a sweater for my daughter, I found the most perfect-fitting pair of pants on sale for $10. Best. Buy. Ever.

This year’s gift, though, didn’t cost a thing. In fact, I’d forgotten about this yearly tradition until I was fully engaged in it this afternoon.

My gift to me this year was…a walk.

I haven’t taken a walk since the hike in October (see “Recovered”) because it took my knee three days to get back to some semblance of normal. I didn’t know it at the time, but I’d torn my medial meniscus. While it felt OK during and right after into the hike, afterwards my knee hurt like a son of a gun. I haven’t tested it since.

When I was diagnosed last month, my doc shot me up with cortisone. My knee is still iffy (it may still need to be scoped), and the way it feels varies day to day. Yesterday I was limping. Today I felt like I could climb Algonquin (a beautiful mountain in the Adirondacks). Instead I did the next best thing. I explored my neighborhood.

Earlier this morning, I was with my daughters and their SOs and my grandkids and Larry. We exchanged gifts, ate eggs and chocolate and potatoes, and when I got home, I was hepped up on sugar and feeling like a slug. My mind said, “Take a nap!” but my body said, “Go outside!” I decided to follow the advice I give here ad nauseum: “Listen to your body!”

I was a having a rockin’ hair day, which alone would usually preclude me from doing anything to mess it up. But I was alone (and besides, who really cares?), so I put on my new Buddy the Elf hat that my darling daughter Carlene knitted for me; layered a long-sleeve t-shirt, sweatshirt and shell underneath my coat; put on my serious walking boots and my gloves; and I headed out.

I live in a working-class town north of Pittsburgh. It’s safe and quiet and much closer to the Allegheny River than I realized. I walked up my street toward the cemetery and turned north onto a road I’d not been on before. I wound around the back streets, admiring the Christmas decorations some folks had on their lawns, when then I saw in one large picture window a leg lamp. A “Christmas Story” leg lamp. Man, I laughed for half a block!

I turned another corner and was struck by the familiar western PA hill-river terrain. I knew the Allegheny wasn’t far away, but I had no idea it was just four blocks from my house. As I got closer to the homes that bordered the hill’s ledge, I felt just how cloistered I’d become in my apartment and in my routine. Since moving here, I haven’t thought outside the box of where I need to be. I get in my Jeep and I go to the store or I go to see the grandkids or I go to a doctor’s appointment or some such. I go with purpose and not with curiosity. Today’s walk shook out all the dust that had settled since my last hike. I love walking. I love looking around. I love the peace and solitude of a long steady pace. When I got back to my house, I didn’t want the walk to end, but my knee was getting quiet insistent after 45 minutes. So I compromised and didn’t go inside right away.

Instead, I sat on the porch swing and I rocked back and forth and felt snowflakes lighting and melting on my face. I watched my breath flow out my nose in a white vapor and disappear. I listened to One Republic in my ears (…“I’m sick of all the insincere, so I’m gonna give all my secrets away…”) and felt the muscle buzz in my thighs. I felt it all and understood the gift of the walk, that of clarity and time alone. When I was driving to Cassie’s this morning, before the hubbub, I heard a song I hadn’t heard in ages: “Hold On Hold Out” by Jackson Browne. Listening to it with my 47-year-old ears (as opposed to my 16-year-old ears) and as someone who’s been up and down the damn scale a number of times, brought a whole new perspective to it. I’ve posted the first few stanzas of the lyrics below, and when you read them, think of how they apply to you. Are you someone who is losing weight or thinking about losing weight? In maintenance or looking for goal? Newly in love or looking for love? Forming or achieving a goal? It’s one of the most thought-provoking songs I know, and the gift of hearing it this morning is one I will not forget. Merry Christmas :)

Hold On Hold Out by Jackson Browne (For complete lyrics, click here)

Hold on hold out, keep a hold on strong
The money's in and the bets are down
You won't hold out long
They say you'll fall in no time at all
But you know they're wrong
Known it all along

Hold on hold out, keep a hold on still
If you don't see what your love is worth
No one ever will
You've done your time on the bottom line
And it ain't no thrill
There's got to be something more
Keep a hold on still
You know what it is you're waiting for
Now you just hold on
Hold on hold out

Diabetic Weight Loss Program – On the Way to Better Health

1299465013 57 Diabetic Weight Loss Program – On the Way to Better Health

The diabetic weight loss program aims to stabilize and maintain your ideal weight and your blood sugar and cholesterol levels. it takes a doctor or a dietitian and a willing patient to be able to construct a diabetic weight loss program. that is why it is highly recommended to consult a doctor before entering such programs–you need to be aware of the risks and the proper way to go about it. here are some tips to help you get started.

It’s not just about weight loss

A diabetic weight loss program is similar in structure to a typical weight loss program, placing emphasis on proper diet and exercise. however, the diabetic should take extra care because the weight loss program is also designed to help control blood sugar and cholesterol levels. these are important in avoiding complications such as hypertension, heart disease, and kidney failure.

Controlling your glucose and cholesterol levels can be difficult if you do not maintain a healthy diet. in a diabetic weight loss program, proper nutrition is the key to success. make sure that you get the right amount of important nutrients for your body every day. If your food restrictions prevent you from getting all the necessary nutrients, ask your doctor if you can take supplements.

Part of an effective diabetic weight loss program is an increase in physical activity. Avoid a sedentary lifestyle and get regular physical activity. You have probably heard about all the benefits of exercise, but if you have diabetes, it’s all the more important.

There are a lot of simple ways to exercise, even when going to the gym or buying exercise equipment is not an option. You can staret by walking, strolling, taking the stairs, or walking your dog. however, before performing any exercise, consult your doctor to see what type of exercise will work best for you.

Eat right, not eat less

A diabetic weight loss program does not necessarily limit your food intake–it just focuses on healthier food choices. make sure you include foods from all the food groups in the right proportions. a typical weight loss meal plan combines vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean meat, fish, poultry, and low-fat dairy products into daily meals.

Low-fat, low-sugar, less salt

Your diabetic weight loss program should also provide you with low-fat and low-sugar options. Scientific studies show that starchy foods can increase your blood sugar faster than sweets and sodas can, so make sure you cut down on the white rice, white bread, and white potatoes. choose low-sugar or sugar-free options if they are available. You also need to maintain normal cholesterol levels by lessening the salt in your food and cutting down on fatty foods.

A daily dose of fiber

Fiber is essential for regular bowel movement, so your weight loss program should include more fiber-rich foods. You need around 20 to 35 grams of fiber every day, and more if you have diabetes. Good sources include beans, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. however, make sure that you drink lots of water to avoid constipation.

When shopping for food to incorporate in your weight loss program, make sure that you read their nutritional labels. Remember to check the amount per serving of cholesterol, saturated fiber, sugar content, carbohydrate content, and the dietary fiber. Nutrient reference values are expressed in daily value percentages to help

Twitter: It’s better than cable

Go Butler!

I had avoided watching the Butler basketball game in the second round of the NCAA tournament because I’ve decided I can’t stand to watch sports games when I actually care about the teams. It makes me anxious. (I can’t watch The Amazing Race either because I get worried that the good people will miss their flights and the bad people will win because this is not scripted and evil sometimes wins.) As I confessed last year, I love the Butler Bulldogs, and I still find comfort in the idea that there is a parallel universe somewhere in which Gordon Hayward’s buzzer beater shot from half-court actually landed in the basket, they won the tournament, and someone is producing a movie about it. And I don’t even care about basketball!

So, there I was avoiding the game, which was easy because it was on cable and I do not have cable. My dad was visiting, so we were watching a game between BYU and Gonzaga, which sounds more like a cheese than a university. Alas, CBS had an infographic at the top of the screen that updated with the latest scores and the time left in the other games. So, of course, the Butler game comes up with Butler down a point with one whole minute left in the game. And I was like, “Damn it, Butler! Why must you always do this to me? Why can’t you just demolish your opponent instead of eliminating my need for nail clippers?”

My dad and I watched the timer run down to 8 seconds (actually, I watched through my nail-bitten fingers), and then it held at 8 seconds for awhile, which was driving me crazy because I didn’t care about the cheese college’s game. So, what does a girl without cable do? She gets her Twitter on! People are always clogging up my Twitter stream with stupid talk about basketball, and now I was finally grateful for it! I pulled out my laptop and searched Twitter for the #butler hashtag. Oh, marvel at my ingenuity, me the 21st century girl (without cable).

This was at once both incredibly informative and totally confusing. For instance, in the tweet stream I would see something like this:

@bballFan4Life: YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!
@LiveToLayUp: NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

So, something important had obviously just happened, but who was the Butler fan and who was the Pittsburgh fan? Why couldn’t their Twitter names be @ButlerRocks and @Pitts4Evah or something?

Then the clock restarted on the TV and then stopped again at 2 seconds, which is when the Twitterati let me know someone had done something stupid, though I could not determine what. I kept hitting refresh, refresh, refresh, trying to sort out facts from the chatter, and finally figured out that Butler had gotten the upper hand by one point and was good to win the game when—d’oh!—somebody fouled Pittsburgh, which meant they’d get two free throws and might win the game.

This was when I remembered why I DON’T WATCH SPORTS GAMES THAT I CARE ABOUT. I evidently needed to expand that rule to include not searching Twitter for hashtags about sports games I care about.

So, there was more rapid refreshing and I announced to my dad, who was watching over my shoulder, that there would be overtime. Yay, overtime! I hate it at work, but in this basketball game it was a Godsend. Go Bulldogs, you’re the—Oh, wait, what’s this? We’re not in overtime? There was a foul. Huh, what? Do they mean the earlier foul? Someone else couldn’t have possibly fouled with less than 2 seconds left. Did we foul again? Were we doubly stupid? When did this become “we,” anyway? Oh, right, many, many moons ago when I worked a contract job at Butler for two months. Here’s the picture of the cup I stole from IT to prove it:

His career faltering after his book trailer debut, Teddy started panhandling on the streets for cas

Finally after several tweets about overtime, fouls, and the bowel movements of the tweeters in question, I finally figured out that Pittsburgh had fouled Butler (God only knows how), so now Butler had two free throws to break the tie and win the game they really should have won several seconds ago.

Tension!

I kept clicking the refresh button and again there was the “YESSSSSSSS!!!!” and the “NOOOOOOO!!!!” and I was like, “Yes! No! Yes! No! What the hell happened?!?!?” Finally, FINALLY, enough tweets came through for me to learn that my boys had come through and Butler had finally won, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat that they had just snatched from the jaws of victory, like some sort of metaphorical turducken, all stuffed within each other.

It was a rather odd way to follow a basketball game, as thrilling as it was confusing. I had to wait 20-30 minutes before CBS finally showed the highlights, so I was glad I hadn’t been stuck in a clueless vacuum with only a cold infographic to keep me company. Later I poked around the NCAA site and learned you can watch live streaming video of games, which would have been good to know earlier, but probably would have been choppy and unreliable because of buffering and datastream speeds and all that nonsense. Watching a game in ASCII takes much less bandwidth.

Here’s a more linear, less confusing wrap-up of the game if all the Twitter recapping left you puzzled. (I hear ya’!)

Double Wrap Up Friday

I didn’t post a wrap up last friday and I must admit I felt a bit lost. I’m getting a bit dependent on these posts to conclude my week. I can’t believe how much it helps!

I’ve been quite a busy bee these past two weeks. With only 5 weeks to go before baby, I’m trying hard to balance working while preparing. Here’s what I’ve been up to…

I’ve pretty much kept up with my own self-inflicted blogging schedule. I posted two Weekend Quotes, Being Proud, and Less and More, but I doubt I’ll get one written by tomorrow unless I get REALLY inspired. I have a busy day planned; boot camp, a friend’s daughter’s birthday party, Little Man’s soccer game AND a date night with hubby. We are trying to squish a few in before baby. I have a feeling we won’t be going out alone for quite some time come April. ;)

I also posted two podcasts, two Sensational Sundays with tons of pictures, two pregnancy update videos, and two Questions of the Week, What 5 Things Would You Do Everyday? and one of my favorites, What 5 things would you tell yourself? The comments alone are worth re-reading. Love all the life lessons!

Finally, last Friday I posted some questions about how to calculate the new PointsPlus on Weight Watchers and I feel bit less confused. There were some great insights in the comments!

Favorite pic of the week…

Somehow I posted FOUR times. That’s the most I’ve posted in a long time.

I had TONS of fun on @Poop_Butt (<– my slang for the site and twitter name)

Favorite picture of the week…

Nothing. Nada. I need to carve a day out each week that’s devoted to the community but I don’t see that happening until AFTER the baby and the conference.

I’ve shared so much these past two weeks here’s a few of my favorites!

The latest addition to our LEGO mini figure collection. We are quite obsessed.

I experimented with a honey/yogurt cake idea but it turned out like a muffin. I want to try one more thing before I post it. Little man loved it though.. so I may share my initial idea this weekend if I have time.

Posted 3/3 on Facebook.”I’m going with a fitted maternity shirt and totally embracing the belly today.” :)

More of the same. At this point I’m just trucking along and have too many open projects to even wrap my head around anything else. I’m all about the baby, the conference, keeping things fresh on the sites and of course, my family. I am considering registering for a race in June to set a running goal but I’m worried it might be too much too soon. So I’m playing it by ear at this point. Those that have babies know.. there is only so much you can plan. I’m going to be entering reaction mode VERY shortly.

Hey...Slow It Down

When I moved to Pittsburgh in November, one of the best things I did was take a yoga class. Not only did I discover a new form of exercise, but I also met BFF Debbie.

Debbie and I have a lot in common – we love birds and dogs, we each have two daughters, we both meditate, and like so many woman, we’ve both struggled with weight most of our lives.

Debbie’s on a quest to lose – for the last time – 50 pounds. Here’s how I know it’s her last time: “Tomorrow is Weight Watchers. I am going to the meeting, but doubt I have lost weight. I don’t think I’ve gained either, but we’ll see. I read a WW success story today that resonated with me. The woman lost 50 lbs, but it took her a long time. She knew she had to make a lifestyle change, not just follow a temporary diet, so she was determined not to get discouraged when she occasionally gained a little or did not lose weight. That gave me inspiration. I tend to be an all or nothing person, and if I don’t lose on a consistent basis, I tend to give up. I don’t want to give up this time, even if it takes me 3 years to lose 50 lbs. What I do know from experience is that once I quit WW (or the diet of the moment) I GAIN weight, so I do know that if I don’t just totally quit, my weight won’t continue to spiral up the scale.”

I totally relate to needing to change that mindset from “Get it off NOW” to slower is better. When I first started losing weight, especially the first 50 pounds, I was highly motivated. Almost too motivated. There were some days I felt so desperate to get the fat off that I’d chastise myself for the following: 1) putting on the pounds in the first place; 2) waiting so long to start doing something about it; and 3) not getting it off faster. I’d get this really anxious feeling throughout my body, like I couldn’t get the fat off fast enough, like a centipede was crawling up my leg. “Get it off me!” I screamed in my head.

I spent way too much time being angry and judgmental, too. I’m sure this will sound familiar: You get on the scale and see you’ve lost a pound or two, so you’re a “good” person. You get on the scale and you’ve stayed the same, lost “only” point something or, God forbid, gained, so now you’re a “bad” person. I still struggle with this. I’m “good” if I eat or exercise perfectly and I’m “bad” if I don’t. I’m always reminding myself that I’m on a lifelong journey of eating well and exercising, not just a day trip.

I’m not a bad person if I don’t feel like going to the gym. Rather than have that emotional knock down drag out and calling myself names, I’ve learned to ask myself, “Why don’t I want to work out?” The answer that emerges is never “Because I’m a bad person.” The answer is always something tangible like I don’t feel well or something is on my mind that is distracting me. Those are issues I can deal with. This also works when I see a number I don’t like on the scale. Instead of judging, I ask myself, “OK, what are some of the reasons this is the number I’m seeing?”

We have to replace destructive thoughts with tolerant ones. It takes a conscious effort to change our self talk from negative to positive, but being fully aware of what we are saying and how it affects our behavior will turn our weight-loss journey into more than just a “Get it off me!” race to some goal we think will make us happy. By being happy in the process of losing weight, by being accepting of our bodies and what they do for us, by appreciating that we’re taking good care of ourselves by eating well and exercising, and forgiving ourselves those times when we don’t, we’re learning to love ourselves as we are in the moment.

There’s a reason, other than the baby’s physical growth, why pregnancy is nine months long. It gives parents time to prepare for the huge lifestyle change that occurs when a baby joins the family. It’s like that with weight loss, too. Every milestone, sometimes every five pounds, comes with a change to our bodies, and we need time to adjust to and appreciate that change. I didn’t start appreciating those changes until I settled my mind down a bit after losing 50 pounds. I bought some new clothes because I was still wearing the old ones, and seeing my body in well-fitted clothes helped me enjoy the body that was emerging.

This journey takes a lot of deep breaths, a lot of patience, and a lot of attitude adjustments. By being your own best friend, by standing beside yourself instead of always running away from who you are in the moment or standing over yourself like some mean coach, chastising your mistakes, you can appreciate who you are and see more clearly who you want to become.

Tracking the Symptoms of Rapid Weight Loss

For more weight loss articles please visit: http://quick-weight-loss-secrets.com/

Just as obesity has become a rampant sickness that can strike anyone at any age, so does rapid weight loss. Because of the pressures of being thin mainly imposed (indirectly) by media, many Americans are coming up with different means to lose weight. Some are determined to find a short cut to losing weight, believing products and methods that claim to help people lose weight fast and painless. However, research has shown that rapid weight loss is unhealthy and even ineffective. Weight loss: the basics Weight loss, in medical terms, is the reduction of one's total body weight. Losing weight, coupled with a balanced diet, is the effective cure to obesity. There are two kinds of weight loss: the unintentional and intentional weight loss. Intentional weight loss Intentional weight loss is a conscious effort to lose weight. A healthy means of intentional weight loss involves a balanced diet and regular exercise. Determining a healthy weight means computing for your body mass index (BMI), or the proportion of your height and weight. Once you have cut down on your weight, maintenance is important. Several weight loss centers and clinics can help direct you in the path of healthy weight loss. Unintentional weight loss Meanwhile, unintentional weight loss is an unconscious means of losing weight. This occurs mostly as a result of sickness or physical complications. One of the symptoms of unintentional weight loss is the rapid dropping of one's weight without any known effort to lose weight. Once you have incurred symptoms of rapid weight loss, you have to see a doctor immediately. Has losing weight become easy for you? Have you noticed lately that you are losing weight even if you are not under any diet or exercise program? Before you start celebrating, you have to be careful. Symptoms of rapid weight loss can lead to possible complications in your body. This is unhealthy.

Tracking the Symptoms of Rapid Weight Loss
If you are suffering from any of the following symptoms of rapid weight loss, you have to talk to your doctor: 1. You're not trying to lose weight. 2. You're trying to lose weight and suddenly lose more than ten pounds. What it means These symptoms of rapid weight loss, according to Richard L. Atkinson, M.D., associate chief of staff for research and development at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Hampton, Virginia, can be symptoms of body complications that are worth checking. Some of the diseases that complement with the symptoms of rapid weight loss are thyroid problems, diabetes, tuberculosis, and even cancer. Mental disorders such as anorexia and bulimia are also possible answers to symptoms of rapid, unintentional, weight loss. Hyperthyroidism One of the common culprits that lead to rapid and unintentional weight loss is hyperthyroidism. This condition results when too much thyroid hormone is in the bloodstream. Symptoms associated with this condition include anxiety, heart palpitations), sweating, rapid and unintentional weight loss, and diarrhea among others. For more weight loss articles please visit: http://quick-weight-loss-secrets.com/ Treating hyperthyroidism Hyperthyroidism has a cure. It can be treated in different ways depending on why the thyroid is overactive and the age of the patient. Some of the means to treat an overactive thyroid include medications that decrease the production of thyroid hormone or by surgical removal of part of the thyroid gland. Other relievers Apart from hyperthyroidism, other complications that result in unintended and rapid weight loss include tuberculosis, diabetes, and cancer. Each of these conditions has a cure. 1. Treating TB – The best way to treat TB is through regular and constant medication that can last up to months.

Tracking the Symptoms of Rapid Weight Loss
2. Disciplining diabetes – Diabetes requires a strict diet, exercise, and medication to maintain your blood sugar levels. 3. Detecting cancer – Early detection of cancer is essential. Treatment may include surgery, radiation or chemotherapy. Mental disorders Anorexia is the most common mental disorder that results in rapid weight loss. Anorexia strikes mostly girls and teens. It is a sickness that has alarmed society because of the death of a Brazilian supermodel. In medical terms, anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes an eating disorder characterized by low body weight and body image distortion with an obsessive fear of gaining weight. Treating anorexia is important. It has to be detected immediately. Once you see someone with symptoms of rapid weight loss without any known effort, you have to talk to her. She might be needing your help. Detection better than cure Once you have notice that you are suffering from symptoms of rapid weight loss, you need to see your doctor immediately. Do not celebrate because you are achieving the ideal weight and body image as seen in the media. A healthy lifestyle is important.

Weekend Quote: Less and More

The comments and insight on my last post have been awesome! I love reading everyone’s opinion and a lot of them got me thinking–am I over-complicating things? I do have a habit of doing that and I don’t think I’m the only one. ;)

It reminded me of a saying I heard once… (I love the web, I can find anything!)

Fear less, hope more, eat less, chew more, whine less, breathe more, talk less, say more, hate less, love more, and good things will be yours.? -Swedish Proverb

I know life can’t always be that simple but it also isn’t as complicated as we sometimes make it.

Today I worried less and played more. Sometimes you just have to be.

Weight Loss Basics
Although there are an ever-growing number of diet books, plans and groups, many people just want to achieve weight loss by sensible healthy eating, rather than following a particular fad or fashion. But where to start your weight loss program? Well, the most basic and probably one of the best guides that you have, is your own common sense. Most dieters these days have already amassed enough information about what is and isn't good for weight loss, to be able to decide whether or not a particular food is healthy, or is likely to help, hinder or otherwise affect their diet. Very often it all comes down to a matter of balance. You know that there are certain things that, unless you have particular medical problems, are generally thought to be good foods that can help you to be healthier and lose those extra pounds. Most dieticians would agree that eating good portions of fresh fruit and vegetables every day is going to be good for you. Also unless you are on a low carb weight loss diet wholegrain foods such as pasta, whole grain bread and rice are usually accepted as being beneficial, both generally and for weight loss. These days drinking is also very much in focus for those who wish to achieve both weight loss and a benefit to their health. It is generally thought that too much alcohol is not a good and may bring about a variety of health problems, although small amounts may not be a bad thing. Water, especially spring water, is thought by many nutritionists to be very beneficial to the health and there are some who say that it can also be helpful to those who are concerned about weight loss. Some encourage drinking water before meals as this can take the edge from the hunger and will let the dieter have smaller meals without feeling as though they haven’t had enough. Lean meat and fish and also the occasional portion of oily fish such as salmon, are another group of foods that are usually thought to be beneficial to weight loss and general health. And also seeds, pulses and many dieticians recommend nuts as being beneficial. There are, of course, many foods that are not generally recommended by dieticians as be effective for weight loss, such as refined sugar products and many fried and especially deep fried foods, such as French Fries. Although a certain amount of olive oil is recommended by many health professionals. It is of course not just the food that you eat, but the way that you eat it that is thought to have an effect both on your health and your weight loss. Many people skip breakfast but many health professionals believe that this is not a

TOC

good way, to either start the day, or to achieve any kind of weight loss benefit. Generally it is a matter of good sense and a reasonable knowledge of what foods are good and should be eaten daily and what are not so good and should be eaten only occasionally. Despite having the ability to work out their own diet many still buy the many diet books that are on offer to have a specific plan to work to. Some find that it helps to have it written down so that they know whether to eat a particular food or not. But if you want to there is no reason why you should not be able to decide on a good diet and healthy weight loss plan, although it is always a good idea to check with your doctor before you start a new diet.

Weight Loss and Metabolism
How many times have you asked someone who appears to be eating large amounts of food, but maintaining the figure of an over enthusiastic long distance runner, how they mange it, only to receive the somewhat unlikely reply that it’s just their metabolism? So what do you need to know about metabolism and how can it help you to achieve your weight loss goals? The metabolic rate is simply the rate at which you use up energy as in calories. The higher the metabolic rate the more calories you burn, the better the weight loss. The lower the rate the fewer you burn. This can depend on a number of different factors. Surprisingly and contrary to what appears to be basic logic, eating less can sometimes slow your diet down, or at least it can slow down the amount of weight loss. The thing is that many nutritionists believe that when you eat very small amounts of calories, the body “thinks” that there is not enough food available. So in an afford to conserve the energy that is available it starts to slow the metabolism down, so that it can make the most use of the reserves that it has. So it is possible that far from helping your diet, that eating too little can actually slow your weight loss. The theory is that the body will then do everything to conserve the best stores of energy that it has. This means that it is possible that the body will, instead of using up the reserves of fat and making you thinner, actually start to use the muscle tissue and burn this so that it can maintain a reserve. Possibly one way to make sure that this does not happen is to make sure that you are eating enough food to keep you body from believing that it should go into starvation mode. But, at the same time, to control your

TOC

calorific intake so that you will achieve the weight loss that is suitable for you. There is not an answer that will suit everyone as to how many calories is enough to help with your weight loss. The best way to work out what is best for you is to visit a qualified nutritionist who will be able to tell you the most appropriate amount of calories for your dietary requirements. Although the metabolism can slow when dieting to achieve weight loss it is believed by some that exercise can help. This may help in two ways. First the metabolic rate can be higher when exercising and so help to burn off those extra calories and help weight loss. Also exercising so that you gain more muscle can help to burn more calories as it thought that muscle burns calories more quickly than fat. One of the best ways to improve your metabolic rate and at the same time gain more muscle and help weight loss is to do more exercise. This can not only help to burn calories but also to add to the amount of muscle and allow the body to burn the calories more efficiently.

Low Fat Weight Loss Diets
Not as popular now as the more heavily publicized diets such as Atkins, South Beach and The GI diet, low fat diets still have a great deal to recommend them. Although diets based on lowering the amounts of carbohydrates, recommend the intake of a variety of fatty foods, many dietitians have long been of the opinion that a low fat and high fiber diet is the best combination for weight loss and health. There have been many diet books covering the low fat weight loss diet, such as the Rosemary Connelly Diet. This maintained that a very low level of fat together with an increased amount of dietary fiber, as in whole meal bread, pasta and brown rice, would aid weight loss and help you to maintain a satisfactory level. Although a low fat weight loss diet is generally considered to be one of the more sensible diets, you should always consult your doctor before starting a new pattern of eating. One of the easiest ways to start a low fat diet is to cut down on the amount of fried foods that you eat. There are perfectly acceptable alternative ways of cooking most foods that are normally fried. Even French fries can be made in the oven, using very small amounts of fat when compared with deep-frying. An easy way to get a good start with a low fat weight loss diet is to buy a steamer. This is a very quick and efficient way of cooking foods, with a minimal loss of vitamins and minerals and is of course very low fat. Steaming is a very good way to cook and can replace a deep fat fryer for some

TOC

cooking, as well as providing a simple way of cooking many healthy alternatives to bought in convenience meals. Lowering your intake of butter and margarine is another simple way to lower your intake of fat and help weight loss. You don’t even have to change what you eat. You can make a difference by either spreading the butter or margarine very thinly or just leaving it our altogether. Reducing fat in your diet does not have to be complicated and there are some very simple things that you can do to make a difference. When cooking meat it is possible to remove some of the fat before you start cooking and if you also grill the meat instead of frying it, you have removed a substantial amount of fat and possibly helped towards your weight loss goals. Cutting down on eating pastry is a good way to help weight loss. Pastry can contain a large amount of fat, so just by choosing a lower fat alternative you can make a difference to your chances of reaching your target. There are some fats that many dieticians believe are good for you, such as olive oil and oily fish and these can be included in a low fat diet. It is really a question of balance. A good low fat weight loss diet can be a very healthy way to lose those extra pounds. Your doctor should be able to provide you with good advice on the best way to choose a diet and how best to make it work for you.

South Beach Diet: an Overview
The South Beach weight loss program became very popular in the 1990’s,as a successor to the stringency of the Atkins diet. It was seen by many, as a more healthy and lees obsessive alternative to the low carb regime of Atkins. Although it still encouraged the participant to avoid many cooked and processed carbohydrates. This included many bread pastries and cakes. Also refined carbohydrates such as sugar as in soft drinks and chocolate. The diet was originated by Dr. Arthur Agatston, an American cardiologist. The system does not follow other diets in a single interpretation of itself as “Low fat or” or “low carb”. It seeks to help the dieter to understand how to eat what is good for them, from both groups of foods so that weight loss can be achieved by eating both “good carbs” and “good fats”. The diet is in three very distinct sections, and each one has it’s own particular function's, first part is the stricter of the two and is designed both to give a quick start to the weight loss and also to develop the pattern of eating a healthier, more stable diet. In the first part the dieter is encouraged to eat three proper meals a day. But foods such as many cooked carbohydrates are excluded from this, although good portions of lean meat and fish and plenty of fresh vegetables are

TOC

recommended. This provides a good start to the diet and also eliminates the problem faced by many weight loss systems, hunger. The South Beach Diet ensures that you are not plagued by the hunger pangs that ruin so many weight loss aspirations, by making sure that you have three good meals a day. This is one of the reasons that many people succeed on this diet, where they have failed on others. By making sure that you are not hungry in the early phase of the diet, The south Beach Diet gives you a head start and lessens the chance of a failure due to just being too hungry and all the associated lack of enthusiasm that goes with it. The first part of the South Beach weight loss plan is very limited. Although you will be able to eat three meals a day, the foods that those meals may contain, such as limited carbohydrates reduce the choices available. Part of the thinking behind this is that when the weight loss starts, you will use carbohydrates more efficiently and as such, the need for then will be at a much lower level. The second part of the South Beach Diet is slightly less restrictive, in that is allows some carbohydrates and other foods that were disallowed in the fist section, back into the diet. It also allows more dairy foods. Many of the foods that were not allowed in the first section (at least the healthy ones) are allowed in the second part. This is a very good incentive for staying with the program and encourages you towards your weight loss goal, by giving you something to work towards. The second segment is adhered to until you have attained your weight loss target. It is a less strict way of eating, but nevertheless can be effective if followed properly. The third segment of the diet is put into practice after the weight loss has been achieved, This section is to allow you to ease off, without slipping back to old habits and regaining the weight. It also gives what some believe to be a good basis for normal, healthy everyday eating and may help to eliminate the problem of yo-yo dieting. One of the topics that The South Beach Diet does not cover is exercise. Many practitioners consider this to be integral to the notion of weight loss as a route to a healthier lifestyle. This is of course is not a barrier to using the diet, as there is a plethora of good information on exercise available, and there is nothing to prevent you from considering this, after checking with your doctor, in conjunction with your South Beach weight loss plan. The South Beach diet is very popular weight loss plan and seems to be maintaining its place on the bookshelves of stores long after its early rush of sales.

The Gi Weight Loss Diet
The Gi plan diet certainly seems to be taking off at the moment. Endorsed by an ever-growing band of celebrities it seems that this is the diet of the moment. But how exactly does the GI weight loss program differ from the other diets on the market and what does GI stand for? The Glycaemic Index weight loss system is based on the fact that some sugar-based carbohydrates affect the glucose levels in the body differently to the more complex starch based carbohydrates. A nutritional expert called Dr. David Jenkins made the claimed discovery, that many sugar-based foods do not greatly affect the sugar levels in the blood, in the early 1980’s. This means, according to the GI diet, that foods that provide a slow delivery of sugar to the body will be helpful to weight loss, in that it will prevent the dieter from feeling the need for energy and so curb hunger and the need to keep on eating. By contrast, foods with a high glycaemic index provide a sudden influx of sugar to the body that gives you energy at first, but then leaves you feeling tired and hungry, as the need for more energy kicks in. This leads to the need for more sugar to get the quick rush of glucose to replace the loss of energy, which in turn has the same effect. This constant need for more sugary food means that weight loss is not likely to be achieved. There is a plethora of information about the glycaemic values of different foods for weight loss, so there is no problem in ascertaining the value of anything that you wish to include in your weight loss diet. The general concept of the diet is fairly straightforward. You eat more of the foods with a low GI than you do of the foods with a high GI. This is however not the entirety of the GI weight loss system as it also encourages the dieter to limit their intake of high fat foods, even if they are also low GI foods. This aspect, of course, means that as well as being based on the glycaemic index of a food; the GI diets are also, in part, a low fat diet. The GI weight loss diet is easy to follow if you are eating standard foods that easily recognizable in the GI indexes. The problem is that many foods have different GI’s depending on whether they are cooked, or the state of ripeness of foods such as fruit. This can, if you are not experienced with this diet be very time consuming and make the whole thing, not very user friendly. It can be especially difficult when a meal is prepared with many different ingredients, to work out the GI value of the whole meal. When you have got over this initial hurdle and are used too the different values of foods, then the whole weight loss system starts to be a lot more

TOC

easy to use. And you need to spend a lot less time looking then up to see if they are within the allowed limits. The GI weight loss system can be very healthy in that it actively encourages the dieter to eat fruits and complex carbohydrates, such as brown rice and pasta. Many health professionals believe these types of foods may contribute towards a healthier diet. It also discourages the intake of processed foods and also foods that are high in fat, such as fried foods like French fries or chips. The GI diet can be a very healthy weight loss system and does not require you to give up the foods that you like. Although restrictive it can be a very varied and enjoyable diet as so as you get used to working out the different values of food groups.

The High Fiber Diet
The high fiber diet is one of the more familiar weight loss diets that still have a good following. This is possibly a more gentle and easy to follow weight loss system than the more extreme diets such as Atkins. Many dieticians and nutritional consultants favor high fiber diets as they are generally considered to be a safe option that can have a positive effect on health. It is always advisable to check worth your doctor before embarking on any weight loss diet. The high fiber diet has had many fiends and very few critics in the weight loss world and is thought by some to have beneficial effects on health, as well as being a good, reliable way to lose weight. High fiber weight loss diets generally rely on a combination of increased fiber in the diet, through more consumption of foods such as whole grains and cereals and also restricting the amount of calories in the diet. This approach allows the dieter to promote weight loss through eating less calories while eating normal amounts of food and so not getting hungry and being tempted to eat foods that are not a part of the diet. Although fiber does not contain any calories that are available to the dieter it can be beneficial as it helps you to feel full and not to always be craving more to eat, when on a calorie controlled diet. It is often this difficulty that many face when on a restricted weight loss diet. Also high fiber foods can take longer to chew. Although this is not directly beneficial to weight loss, it does allow the dieter to feel as though they have eaten a more substantial meal and it also makes the meal take longer and this in turn helps. As well as weight loss, some dieticians believe that high fiber foods can make a positive contribution good health by helping the food to move more efficiently through the body. Also many of the foods that are helpful in a high fiber weight loss diet are very good nutritionally. Many fruits, vegetables and whole grains contain large amounts of vitamins and minerals and are thought

TOC

to be very good for the health, as well as beneficial to the promotion of weight loss. There are two different kinds of fiber, soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber is found in many foods such as fruits, vegetables, pulses and beans. Soluble fiber is thought to help in keeping cholesterol down and to reduce the risk of heart disease, according to some dieticians. Insoluble fiber is usually found in whole meal foods such as flour, grains, rice and pasta. And is thought to help with the passage of the food through the digestive tract and so to promote good digestive health. A high fiber diet an take a little getting used to, although this is also true with many other weight loss diets, but is easy to follow and has been established for much longer than many of the diets that are an ever changing feature of the bookstores. It has many recommendations from health professionals but it is always a good idea to consult your doctor before chancing your diet or starting a new weight loss system.

The Traffic Light Weight Loss Diet
Many of the weight loss diets that are popular today can be quite complicated to follow and awkward to apply to everyday living. Take the GI diet for instance where you apply different values to foods, based on their glycaemic index number Then you add up the number of these that you are allowed to eat in any one day. This can be extremely difficult when going out, unless you would like to go and ask the chef what is in your meal. And with the Atkins diet you can forget about going for a pizza with your friends. For many dieters these diets are cumbersome to use in everyday living and can lead to many just giving up and returning to their normal eating habits. The Traffic Light Diet has found a very good way to simplify this. They have devised a straightforward weight loss system that is easy to follow and can be used in most social situations, such as when dining out. The diet is based on (perhaps unsurprisingly), a traffic light weight loss system for different foods. There is an extensive list that will tell you what the color is for each different food or food group. Although this in itself may at first appear cumbersome and slow, you can pick up the general gist of it very quickly. It doesn't take long to get a good idea, even if you haven’t got the book with you, of what food is in which category. The idea is that each food is given a color according both to its calorific value and its nutritional value. These are then combined to give you a quick and easy reference to show you which foods to eat more of and which to eat less of. If you follow the instructions carefully then the author believes that the diet will both help you to have a nutritionally sound diet, as well as one that promotes weight loss.

Foods are given a red light include those that are high in calories and fat and also those that are not of any great value nutritive value to the dieter. Foods that are amber are more neutral and can be eaten with a little care and moderation. This can involve such foods as cheese, milk, nuts and lean meats. The green light foods are those that are more helpful for weight loss and can include such foods as low fat milk, vegetables, fruit and white fish. The idea is really one of moderation. You eat as much of the green foods that are thought to be helpful, less of the amber foods that, although not being as beneficial to weight loss, still have a place in a well balanced diet. But not too much of the red foods that are thought to be less beneficial and are generally higher in calories and lower in nutritional value. When you are familiar with which food fits into which group then you will find that the traffic light weight loss diet is very easy to use and much less complicated than many others. The Traffic Light diet can be an easy way to achieve weight loss for those that are really not interested in the latest fad diet, or in counting calories and keeping track of everything that they eat all day. It is not an extreme diet but more a way of promoting gentle weight loss that you may be more likely to maintain through sensible eating and learning what foods are good for you and what foods are more likely to make you put on weight.

A proper, sensible diet under the guidance of your local family doctor, with a sensible healthy eating plan and good advice on which ids the best type of exercise for you to start off, with can be a great advantage. With realistic weight loss targets and proper monitoring of your health as you move towards and achieve those targets your doctor can be a real benefit in your goal of a lighter, healthier you.

Weight Watchers: A Diet System
Nearly everyone who has ever been on a diet, or who has ever read about diets will have heard of Weight Watchers. They have been the most recognizable product in the diet field since the early 1960’s They are not really a diet as such, more a brand that is well known in the weight loss industry as being one of the leading players, in helping others to reach the weight that they want to achieve. Weight watchers has Probably the largest amount of dieters of any of the weight loss clubs and the fact that they have been established for that amount of time is an indication of their success. They have been estimated to have around 20,000,000 involved in their diet clubs at any one time. Their success is based not so much on the diets themselves as much as the support system. The diets have been changed over the years to fit with current thinking and best practice, but have generally been based on a calorie-controlled system of weight loss. They do not offer the guaranteed fast weight loss of some diets, but prefer the slow steady approach, that helps dieters to gradually lose weight through sensible eating and then keep it off. But their diets are not based on a particular focus, such as low fat or carbs, but on having a generally good, low calorie diet. The Weight Watchers diet is actually fairy simple to follow. They have given all foods a number according to how much they are likely to make you put on weight. Each person has an amount that they can consume in a day according to how much they weigh and their ideal weight loss. Then they can eat whatever adds up to that number each day. That is a very simple version of the Weight Watchers weight loss system. It is brought together with advice on good diet and how and when to eat and is a very comprehensive system for the helping the dieter, to not only lose weight but also to keep that weight off. It should also be said that the Weight Watchers diet does lean heavily towards their own products. But for all that it is a very useful and well tried and tested weight loss system. Weigh Watchers also have a very useful aspect that sets them aside from any of the books you buy, their weight loss meetings. This is the basis of the entire weight watchers system and is fundamental to their success. The meetings are usually on a weekly basis and are lead by an official Weight Watchers leader. These clubs are a great encouragement to those who like to have some help and support when they are dieting. Although they can also be a little daunting if you haven’t reached your weekly weight target.

TOC

13

If you prefer not to go to the meetings they do have an online version that you can also use if you are not able to get to the meeting that week. They also have a very well populated forum that can be a great help to those who are struggling or those who just like to share how the weight loss is going. Weight watchers are undoubtedly the brand leaders in the field of diet clubs and products and are very well thought of by many, the only real drawback is that the meetings are obviously much more expensive that just buying a book. But if you like to be part of a group and think that your weight loss would be more successful with this encouragement, then the Weight Watchers clubs may be worth considering.

Weight Loss: The Atkins Diet
The Atkins diet is a modern weight loss phenomenon. Founded by Dr Robert Atkins, 1930-2003, it was first published as a diet book, “Dr Atkins Diet Revolution” in 1972. This was followed by a series of books on the subject. There were worries about the safety of the diet and although it dwindled in status, it became popular again in the 1990’s. The popularity of Atkins as the ultimate fast weight loss system was helped by the rise of the celebrity fascination and the fact that many celebrities that had shown fast weight loss, attributed this to the Atkins diet. The diet became very popular, with some hotels and restaurants offering special menus for followers. The Atkins weight loss system is based on the diet being restricted in its intake of carbohydrates. These are largely replaced by allowing more fat and meat based products into the diet and this has been one of the main areas where the diet has been criticized as this can affect the balance of food groups that are eaten. Many health experts contend that it is not good for the body to have a restricted level of carbohydrates in the diet and that this is also not the best way to achieve weight loss. However those in favor of Atkins point to sudden and dramatic weight loss that, so long as you follow the principles, it is possible to maintain. If you reduce your daily carbohydrates to less than 40 grams, (some Atkins texts suggest this should be no more than 20 grams), then you will be subject to a state known as ketosis. This means that instead of using sugar from carbohydrates as fuel, the body will instead to use fat. Some dieticians believe that this is not a good way to diet and that some of the material that is used as energy, is normal tissue rather than fat. Some also think that at least part of the loss is water. Although it has to be said that there are also health professionals that do not have a problem with the Atkins weight loss system.

TOC

14

Part of the problem that some people have with this, as good way to weight loss is that Atkins advises that when the desired results are achieved, then the participant should remain eating a low carbohydrate diet, or they will return to their former weight. Although a gradual increase in the carbohydrates is allowable, it is still low. One of the main criticisms that is leveled at the Atkins weight loss plan is that it does not contain any carbohydrates and so is unhealthy. This is inaccurate, although the level is low and this is mainly what the diet is based on. Another problem is that, as some fresh vegetables and most fresh fruits contain sugar, that this can restrict your intake of these and so is bad for the general health of the dieter. The Atkins weight loss system undoubtedly works if adhered top strictly, as the amount of carbohydrates that are taken from the diet lowers the amount of calories that are eaten and you lose weight. But there are many other effective diets that are based on restricting calories. When starting any weight loss diet, especially one that is restricting certain food groups such as the Atkins, it is a good idea to see your doctor and get advice as to whether this is the right diet for you and whether it is the best alternative. There may be other weight loss systems that provide a better all round nutrition and yet still let you lose weight at a reasonable rate.

Weight Loss through Hypnosis
Weight loss through hypnosis - it sounds so appealing doesn’t it – the whole idea of listening to a few words through your MP3 player and then watching the pounds simply drop off? But can you really lose weight through hypnosis? The short answer is that you will lose weight by making better choices when it comes to eating and exercising – you already knew that right? However, when it really comes down to it, why do we eat that fast food that causes our waist-lines to bulge in the first place; why do we overindulge when our bodies our telling us that enough is enough; and why do habitually we sit at home rather than getting our running-shoes on and going for that benefit-laden jog? The answer is that we do those things that are ‘bad’ for our bodies – unconsciously - out of sheer habit! So what is the answer – can we change our habits and change our bodies in the process? Well, that’s where hypnosis might indeed come in handy because hypnosis is one very effective way of dealing with our subconscious. If we can change our unconscious thinking patterns, we can change the drivers that cause us to overeat and under-exercise. There is much misunderstanding surrounding the whole subject of hypnosis but the process is simple and can be very effective. Once the subconscious has truly accepted that you are a person who is fit and healthy - and,

TOC

15

naturally, THIN, the wonderful thing is that you can actually begin to become that fit, healthy, thin person. Hypnosis does not involve going into a ‘deep sleep’; it does not involve swinging pocket-watches; it does not consist of looking deep into someone’s eyes. It simply consists of accessing a natural brain state in which the subconscious mind is particularly receptive to positive suggestions. Once accepted by the subconscious, those suggestions will cause you to change your eating and exercise patterns which will, in turn, cause you to lose excess weight and regain your shape. All of this can happen because your habitual thinking patterns can be changed for the better using a basic hypnosis technique known as auto- suggestion. Many people have been very successful using this method for weight-loss. Of course, it’s not just weight-loss that can be achieved through hypnosis. Today, hypnosis is widely recognized for its effectiveness in treating a whole range of issues from quitting smoking to improving your self-confidence. If you are a smoker, you know you need to stop – and you can use exactly the same techniques for quitting smoking as those you use for weight loss. A fit and healthy person is first, and foremost, someone with a fit and healthy mind. Absolutely everything you do is controlled by your thinking – both your conscious thought and your subconscious, automatic, habitual behaviour. Hypnosis seeks to change the inner-person first. Once that change has taken place, the outer-person – the person with whom the world interacts – will be transformed.
