My workouts.

Back on this post a few of you asked for specifics on my 20 minute workout.

Let's pretend this isnt blurry, ok?

It’s also a question I get pretty frequently by email.  It seems you wanna know what, exactly, I do for my weights routine, how frequently I lift etc.  You crazy.

The thing is, ala the We dont need no STINKIN’ HOOK! post, it almost doesn’t matter what *I* do.

It’s taken close to 43 years for me to find what works for this bod & one thing I do know is it isnt necessarily what will work for anyone else.

That said, I entirely get your frustration when that’s my response.

That said, I entirely OWN the fact it would piss me off be a bit irksome if I asked about someone’s workout plan & they merely said it might not work for me.

Id wanna decide that last piece for myself.

As a result, I give you my workout routine in three different forms so you may consume the one which works best for you.

In 86 seconds of rhyme:

In 107 seconds of (more) serious yammering:

And, finally, in terse bullet points:

Far more important than what my workouts consist of is the fact they are consistent.  ZERO  fits and starts.  When you’re consistently healthy–almost 19 years in the house!–no single day needs to be “perfect.”Im soft of core.  My training is for functional fitness not competition. When I’m lifting in a traditional fashion (read: not PLAYouts) I break down the body parts so my sessions never exceed 20 minutes.  As I say in the silly rhyme video: chest, back, legs, biceps, triceps, shoulders.  All individual workouts.

And thats me.

And precisely why Ive never blogged about my workout routine as methinks this could replace Ambien as sleep inducer.

Now you.

Does your workout routine resemble mine? Care to share?

Is your training schedule not at all like mine? Wanna divulge?

Anyone else care to vlog their exercise approach in rhyme or rap? Ill link! Ill link!

MUST Schedule Workouts

I hit the gym tonight. First time since Saturday morning. I know this sounds dramatic, but I NEEDED to go. I don’t know what’s happened to me over the last 6 years, but my body has changed. It WANTS to work out. I crave the movement. The sweat. The challenge.

The funny thing is I don’t associate working out with weight loss at all. I originally lost all 70lbs by "Staying Active." I did some minor stuff and just made a commitment to move more. Then I joined a gym, befriended a trainer and started running. After a year, I was hooked! I loved the way I felt. Running gave me a sense of accomplishment. Weight training boosted my confidence.

I workout because I want to, not because I have to. That was something I never understood when I was stuck in the yo-yo diet cycle of hell. Back then I thought it was a punishment for being fat. Now it’s much needed ME time. When I’m working out it’s the only time I don’t have a phone, computer, kid or husband breathing down my neck. When I’m at the gym I’m there, 100%, surrounded by people who inspire me. When I’m running, I just am.

WOW I have NO idea where all that came from. When I got home from the gym I was just so happy and inspired. Anyway, let’s get to the food journal because then I’m logging off, figuring out a new workout schedule, and settling in to watch Sons of Anarchy–my guilty pleasure show. ;)

This morning started with smoothie. I was just not in the mood for anything else.

chocolate, banana, raspberry and kale smoothie

That’s a chocolate, banana, raspberry and kale smoothie. Click here for the recipe.

Lunch was leftovers of leftovers made from leftovers…

Man I LOVE Thanksgiving! That was the end of it. I’m a little sad to see it go.

After lunch I popped a little popcorn while working.

When The Little Guy had his after school snack I grabbed a yogurt.

Those are from Aldi’s. I love the cherry!

Dinner was amazing! I experimented with a pistachio crusted tilapia and it came out great!

That white stuff is quinoa. I may make a single serving version of this for lunch tomorrow and post on GreenLiteBites.

After dinner I ran to the gym, took a BodyPump class and then ran home.

My new gym is just over a mile away. It’s perfect and I love not having to move the car.

When I got home I watched the end of Rudolph with Little Guy and then took a shower and brushed my teeth. No snacks for me tonight. I made a big orange spice tea (so awesome on a chilly fall night!)

Hope you had an awesome day!

YAY for podcasts! Let’s get right to it. Topics this week include…

I’m only losing 1 lb a week. Thoughts on slow weight loss? How do you account for ketchup?Nursing and Running long distances. Working out in the AM vs PM. Getting the courage to run events.

(Side Note: For some reason the audio is out of sync after about 2 minutes in. I’m trying to fix and will replace if and when I do. It’s REALLY annoying. There is a link for the audio version below the video if you can’t watch it.)

How to give workouts purpose & vision by discovering your W.H.Y.

Thanks so much to Joyce, the Moore than Fitness Coach for this guest post

Picture this…Sicily 1932…(couldn’t help it…I’m a Golden Girls fan)…Seriously, picture this…

It’s April 15th and the first hint of spring has hit the air. The sun is shining and the flowers are starting to peek out of their buds. After months of cold weather you feel like it’s time to put the top down, if only for a moment. Then it happens (queue the jaws theme music)…just as you throw your arms up in the air to welcome warmer months you feel the wind flapping your arms around like a flag on the 4th of July. As you scream like a woman in travail, you realize that you only have a few weeks until the start of summer. You immediately bust a u-turn like a badass officer on an episode of cops and race to the nearest gym. You purchase the gym membership and promise yourself that you’re going to get into shape this summer.

Sound familiar? It gets better…

Then July comes around and you realize that you only made it to the gym a handful of times and never followed the eating plan your local trainer gave you. You sigh and walk slowly towards the swimwear cover-up section at the department store.

I don’t know about you, but this is like a page taken out of my weight loss journal and I’m a fitness professional. Yup, even fitness pros have times when we hit the wall or let things get in the way of our fit lifestyle.

What I have found each time this happened to me is that I lacked real motivation. Let me explain… See real motivation comes from understanding WHY you are doing something in the first place. Now as a woman, I know firsthand just how important looking hot on the beach can be. But like the example above, it’s not enough to keep us on track.

Let’s dig in quickly and discover some real purpose for your workouts.

The “W” in W.H.Y stands for Who.

Ask yourself Who is important to you. Maybe you want to be able to run with your child without becoming winded or perhaps you want to encourage a loved one to be healthy as well. Find a person to dedicate your efforts to and you’ll definitely have a higher rate of success.

Next is the “H” which stands for How.

How can what you’re doing influence someone else? In other words, can your weight loss inspire and motivate someone you possibly don’t even know to do the same as you? Are there people cheering you on along your journey that are looking up to you?

And finally, “Y” is for saying YES to commitment.

Often times we have a small voice telling us it’s okay if we don’t succeed. But I’m here to tell you that it’s okay to tell yourself “YES I CAN”! Could you muster up enough spunk to say that to yourself and mean it? If the answer is yes (and I hope it is), then the sky is the limit for anything that you want to accomplish.

I hope these tips have served you and that you can start defining your WHY today.
