NEVER Buy a Weight-Loss Product Based on Before and After Photos Again!

Ever since I freaked out and ranted about my stolen before and after photos, I’ve been shocked at the response.

First GMA hopped on the story, then Inside Edition and now fellow weight loss success stories are asking my advice as they find their photos have been stolen as well.

Stolen photos aren’t a new thing. I’ve been battling image thieves since 2005 when I started this blog. In most situations I email the site using my photos, firmly ask them to take them down, and within 24 hours they are removed.

It happens when you share your photos online. I get it.

However, the photo-stealing thieves have been turning to Facebook more and more. They are using stolen before and afters to run some pretty aggressive ad campaigns and (thankfully?) it’s bringing more attention to this issue.

Honestly, I don’t think they realize how “social” social media really is. It was my readers who emailed to let me know my photos were plastered all over Facebook and I’m not the only one.

Meet Sunny.

She reached out to me frustrated as the same Facebook page (from the screen shot above) who stole my images stole hers as well. Neither of us have ever used  Natural Garcinia Cambogia or Natural Green Cleanse, the supplements that particular page is peddling.

Here’s Sunny’s REAL story…

It took me about six months to lose the weight that I did to these photos and about a year to reach my goals. I did it through clean eating, exercise and having a great support system from Stephanie Keenan Fit Life group! The last photo of the pants was an innocent picture taken by my 15 year old daughter. We were going through old clothes to donate and take to the resale shop. She picked up the pair of jeans and said “Whose are these?” I said MINE! So she insisted we take a picture of how much I had lost compared to those pants. Sure anyone can buy a bigger pair of pants and claim massive weight loss but that was not the case here. It was a special moment I shared with my fitness folks and it was taken and distorted and used to promote some gimmick product. These people need to be held accountable for their actions!

Michelle’s photos were also stolen and used on another Facebook page to promote something she didn’t use or endorse.

It took me just over a year to lose 42kgs and it was a very very long journey! I changed my diet to a Primal diet based on meat, eggs, fats, veggies, fruit, nuts and seeds, and I didn’t calorie count. I spent a year of my life immersed in the Primal/Paleo life. It wasn’t always easy but it was so worth it, I cannot emphasize enough how much my life and my health have improved. I used to suffer from Depression, Anxiety Attacks, Meniere’s Syndrome, PCOS and Migraines. I have had dramatic reduction of these symptoms and I finally feel healthy. At times I wanted to give up and just eat all my old faves and veg on the couch, but I didn’t. I was focused as if my life depended on it.

I’m angry that my photos were stolen and used to promote these weight loss scams. It feels like a complete mockery of my hard earned weight loss. I am hoping that by sharing my story that this will bring awareness to what seems to also be happening to countless others, and to highlight just how dodgy these scamming websites and Facebook pages really are. While I can appreciate the silver lining my photo being stolen; the people that have read the truth are now following my page and have been made aware of the scam. I’m thankful that a few hundred people didn’t get sucked in by this. But unfortunately I would say there are countless people that have been. There is no quick fix, no secret, no magic. If there were a pill that worked I believe Oprah would have invented it by now.

Brandi’s photos have been stolen many times before (sometimes even used in print!) but most recently used to sell some weight loss product called ACE. Here’s Brandi’s REAL story.

It took me over a year to lose that weight and I’m still fine tuning myself. I go to the gym 4 days a week at 5am before my kids wake up and I get a long run in on Saturday or Sunday mornings as well. I work full time, have 2 boys, and just want other women to know that if I can do it, so can they. And they can do it with little to no help! All they’ve got to do is TRY!

I receive emails every week from readers telling me they saw my before and after pictures on another “weight loss fad” site. I even have had a few readers tell me my pictures have been printed out and posted as before and after pictures (with FALSE STATS) and have been posted at their gym in Arkansas! I live in Dallas, Texas!

All of their (and my) weight loss took TIME. They did it though diet changes and exercise. They found what worked for them and it WASN’T some pill or supplement.

The secrets to my weight-loss maintenance (Athleta gift card giveaway).

The longer I write about health & fitness the more I realize losing weight/getting healthy is, indeed, the easy part.

Sure it’s challenging to get started.

Yes it can be daunting to stay on our fit-paths & not veer off onto Slacker Lane or Poptarts Place.

Yet the number of emails I receive** from people (fingerquotes) at goal (unFQ) and filled with panic because they’re terrified they wont be able to maintain the loss is staggering.

Do I have all the answers? No.

Do I know what worked for me to shed 35ish pounds & keep it at bay for 17+ years? Yes.

I ate Breakfast. I began my trudge down this path never eating a morning meal, 35 pounds heavier and possessed zero muscle tone.  I started down this path approximately 17 years ago.  In 17 years Ive never once skipped breakfast.  Ever.  ‘Nuff said.It was NOT about the vessel. Before I get all it was about the inside! it was about how I felt!! on you allow me to clarify: it was initially about the outside.  It was about the fact I couldn’t fit into my interview suits and I was too damn cheap & poor to procure new ones.  That incentive, however, quickly waned.  I realized to sustain my commitment to healthful living I needed more motivation than my snazzy red skirt suit. Which led me to…I created a Fitness Mission Statement®. Simply put: this phrase captures why I do what I do in the realm of health. Precisely what I’m doing at any given time may change (from karate to kettle bells) but why has remained fairly static over the almost two decades.  Make time to sit, think, and write down exactly why you want to lose weight/maintain your weight-loss.  Specifics beyond skinny jeans or bikini-season.  If you’re stuck perhaps consider how this endeavor impacts all facets of your life and not just what’s in your closet.I chose to be healthy. I still do.  I wake each morning and recommit to the path I’ve chosen.  I take personal responsibility for the decisions I make throughout my day.  Sure they’re not always the best (Howdy aforementioned Poptart Place! Greetings Skipped Workout Blvd!) but I accept responsibility, acknowledge, & decide to choose more wisely next time.I was consistent. I am consistent.  I also consistently do less than my body is capable of doing.  I started off like a misfit a’fire and quickly overtrained.  I fell head-over-heels in love with my emerging muscles and lifted so frequently they began to grow *smaller* (go me!). It was then I realized unless I was training to compete I responded better to shorter workouts.  Brief, intense sessions leave my body craving MORE the next day—not so wrecked & sore I dread exercising again.  This consistency, and ZERO FITS & STARTS, has changed my life.  More than staying physically fit I’ve avoided the emotional beating starting & stopping healthy living does to us all.I recognized I had worth even if nothing changed. I was already enough. Whether this translated to treating myself better and helped me stay on my path is debatable, but the fact this realization has permeated & impacted every facet of my life is not. From my world of work to my inter-personal relationships I *know* I am worthy.

So there you have it.

The six tips I credit for helping me maintain my loss for 17 years without a slip or sliiiiiiiide back into old habits.

The SOS Plan: Vault Past Your Weight-Loss Plateau

Maybe you’ve hit a plateau in your weight-loss journey or, for some reason, you’ve overindulged and need to get back on track. To help, I’ve developed what I call my “SOS Plan” -- a streamlined boost that delivers essential nutrition while resulting in a noticeable drop in weight.

Please understand, however: The SOS Plan is NOT for the long term! It is a temporary solution to weight-loss plateaus and occasional over-indulgences. Here are the core precepts:

Maintain your overall calorie budget Increase lean protein intake to 35 percent of calories; from fish, poultry and meat Reduce carbohydrate intake to 40 percent of calories, and limit these carbs to fresh fruits and vegetables ONLYEliminate whole grains (Remember this is only temporary)Reduce or eliminate legumesMaintain your intake of healthy fats at 25 percent of total caloriesUse the “SOS” plan for no more than four weeks at a time, and no more than three times a yearWhy is this combination so effective for weight loss? Let’s take a look at the science behind it.

At first, the “SOS” plan may seem counter-intuitive. After all, weight loss comes down to a simple equation: To drop pounds, you must consume fewer calories than you expend. If your calorie budget remains the same when on the “SOS” plan, why would your weight-loss rate be different?

The key lies in the type of calories consumed -- the shift toward protein and the reduction in carbohydrate. And there’s a psychological component, too; by shaking up your eating routine, you’re likely to refocus on your habits and identify areas of slippage.

Protein intake can affect weight loss dramatically, for a couple of reasons:

Protein burns more calories. Our bodies actually burn calories to extract nutrients from the foods we eat -- a process called the “thermic effect.” More calories are burned processing proteins than either fats or carbohydrates. Even upping your lean protein intake just 5 percent, as the “SOS” plan recommends, causes a significant shift in your diet’s overall thermic effect – burning more calories overall.Protein makes you feel full longer. Even more than starchy “comfort foods,” high-protein foods produce a sensation of fullness or satiety. Researchers are still discovering why protein uniquely produces this effect, but the weight loss results are convincing. It may be due to the fact that protein is metabolized more slowly and thus blood sugar levels remain stable for a longer period of time.

While the “SOS” plan ups protein intake, it decreases carbohydrate consumption -- and totally eliminates grains and cereals temporarily.

It bears repeating: Carbohydrate plays a vital role in good nutrition. In fact, your body needs carbohydrate to process all that increased protein. Also, diets that are too high in protein and extremely low in carbs can strain the kidneys in susceptible people as well as increase the risk for heart disease, especially if the protein comes from animal sources.

So on the SOS plan, carbohydrate continues to play the leading role, at 40 percent of total calories. But here’s the key difference: All your carbohydrate calories should come from fruits and vegetables. There are several reasons for this focus:

The highest nutrient bang for calorie buck. Non-starchy fruits and vegetables are low in calories but loaded with the fiber and antioxidant vitamins that promote health.Produce is filling. Many varieties of fresh produce are high in water content and fiber, meaning you can eat plenty for just a few calories – which helps fill you up and feel satisfied. For example, a cup of brown rice has 216 calories, while the same amount of chopped cabbage has just 21 calories, giving you plenty of crunchy filling for minimal calorie investment.

The combined effect of increased protein intake and reduced carbohydrate consumption can have a powerful, temporary effect on the scale. It is interesting to note that for each gram of carbohydrate the cells in your body store, they store four grams of water. Initial weight loss when eliminating carbohydrates from your diet is mostly water weight (the less carbohydrates stored in your body, the less water as well). When you decrease the amount of carbohydrates you eat, your body burns glycogen, a quick energy supply stored in your liver alongside a supply of water. When you burn the glycogen, the water is excreted. Most of the weight you lose at first is that water. To see long-term success with weight loss, it’s important to consume fewer total calories, but to include all food groups to maximize nutritional value.

Seeing the numbers move in the right direction on the scale is a rewarding feeling that will renew your commitment to weight loss!

If your weight-loss plateau calls for drastic measures and you are invoking the SOS Plan, try this high-protein recipe from my book Flavor First. With 33 grams of protein and carbs only from fresh vegetables it'll help you hit the right ratio to get you over your hump.

Cooking “en papillote” means sealing the ingredients in a paper or foil packet, which traps both steam and flavor inside. The packets can be assembled a few hours ahead of time and popped in the oven just before dinner. Read more about cooking en papillote on FlavorFirst.com.

An equal weight of shrimp or scallops can also be used in place of the salmon.

This recipe makes four servings.

1 medium fennel bulb, trimmed, quartered lengthwise, cored, and sliced
1 small red onion, halved and thinly sliced
1-1/2 cups cherry or grape tomatoes, halved lengthwise
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil or 1 teaspoon dried
4 salmon fillets (5 ounces each)
Fresh chives or scallion, for garnish
Lemon wedges

2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil

In a nonstick skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the fennel and onion and cook for about 4 minutes or until they’re just beginning to soften. Add the tomatoes, garlic and basil and cook for 2 minutes longer. Remove from the heat and set aside.

Preheat the oven to 400°F.

Cut off four 15 x 15-inch squares of parchment paper (see note). Fold a square of parchment in half to create a crease, and then open up. Place a fish fillet on one side of the crease. Repeat for the remaining fillets. Top each of the fillets with one-fourth of the veggie mixture. Fold the edges of the paper together and then tightly fold in the edges, crimping around all sides to seal the packets completely. Place the packets on a baking sheet.

Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. The fish should flake easily with a fork.

Place each packet on a dinner plate. To serve, slit the packet with an “X” and fold back the paper. Sprinkle with chives and serve with lemon wedges.

NUTRIENTS per serving: 260 calories, 10 g total fat (2 g saturated), 65 mg cholesterol, 95 mg sodium, 9 g total carbohydrates (2 g sugars), 3 g fiber, 33 g protein

It’s weight-loss season! (An entry where I overuse parenthetical comments.)

Happy New Year

I can tell it’s weight-loss season because I’ve gotten more emails asking for weight-loss advice in the past two weeks than I did for the last two months. I think some people are finding this site and my email address after they purchased my book Half-Assed: A Weight-Loss Memoir. If so, thanks for buying the book! I truly appreciate the support. Eighteen months ago I quit my job to freelance full-time as a web designer and writer. (That’s right. I stuck it to the man! And the man has yet to stick me back.) So, I depend on book royalties to pay rent and buy lots of chocolate healthy veggies. I guess that means it’s really my landlord and Food Lion that thank you.

In the interest of full disclosure, I want to reiterate a fact that I’ve blogged about and posted on my About page, which is that in the past three years I’ve gained back about 50 pounds from my lowest weight. This was mainly due to a never-ending headache from hell, but eventually apathy and boredom snuck in there, too. So much so that for the past few months I haven’t been eating that healthy, nor have I been exercising regularly. So, when people write me asking how to lose weight (or “loose” weight, because the only thing worse than too much weight is tight weight) I’ve felt an urge to reply, “I dunno! Ask someone else! And bring me a cookie!”

However, it’s the new year, and the resolution I made six years ago (Dear God, has it been that long? Am I really 30?) worked out pretty well, so I thought I’d make another one. My resolution isn’t to start a diet or run another half-marathon or anything like that, it’s just to make better food choices and to work out at least three times a week.

There is a part of me that looks back on the time when I was exercising 6 days a week for 30-60 minutes and cooking dinner every night and thinks, “You should jump right back into that again!” But there is a more realistic part of me that thinks it’s silly to go from 0 to maniac in a day. Working out 3 days a week is better than working out none. I also think diets are silly, so I prefer to frame my new eating behavior in my mind as “making better choices.” If I make better food choices, choices that do not involve buying Krispy Kreme donuts at 10 o’clock at night, than I’m doing better than I was before, even if I’m not eating as healthy as I did at my peak. Really, it all comes down to choices. Everything in life comes down to choices, outside of what we can’t control like earthquakes and tsunamis and neighbors who play bagpipes.

I’ve been keeping a food diary, recording my weight on the wall calendar every day and then writing my exercise for the day down next to it. (And if you haven’t done Pilates or lifted weights for over a year, be prepared not to be lifting anything for three days afterward. Or sitting up.) So, I’ve got a plan, I’ve got accountability, and it’s been going pretty well for the past week. Then I’ll make it through the next week and the week after that, just like I have with my headache. One day at a time, people.

Most important of all, besides the optimism and hope of change that comes with the new year, I feel like I’m more mentally in the game right now that I have been for any time in the past few years. In that time I’ve had to deal with an ongoing medical problem, learn how to manage my own business, and I moved to another state. There was a lot of shit going on, and weight loss honestly wasn’t that important. I still weigh over 100 pounds less than I did at my heaviest, so it’s not like my weight has been making me miserable and trapping me in my home like it used to. I’m not back at square one, I’m back at square 50 out of 200. It’s been manageable, if not optimal, which might be why weight loss hasn’t been the primary occupation in my life like it was when it was destroying my life.

Right now I’m feeling my freelancing groove, I’ve settled into my new home, and my headache has been staying pretty steady at a 1 out of 5 on my latest medication cocktail. (Unfortunately it has the side effect of making my heart skip beats occasionally, which the doctor says is not a big deal nor is it the life-threatening, call-911-NOW-PLEASE!!! condition you would immediately assume it is when you feel your heart pause and then make a big THUMPing jumpstart. It’s freaky, but better than a headache!)

So, here we go 2011! Here’s to better choices! My heart’s already skipping a beat in anticipation.
