There’s a Moral to This Story Even if it’s a No Brainer. Doh!

I’m not sure if this story is funny or sad. Not sad boohoo but sad as in WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH ME!

OK, so last night I tweeted out…

As you can see, I was convincing myself that working out in the morning was a good idea.

I mean I KNOW it’s a good idea but that doesn’t mean I need a push now and then.

Pretty much every Tuesday and Thursday for the past 9 months or so I wake up at 5:25 AM, run a mile to the gym, take BodyPump, and run the mile home. I started when I was training for the mudder and never got out of the routine. I’ve been going so long, I finally feel like a regular at the gym. The instructor knows me. The receptionist knows me. It’s nice.

Lately, however, I’ve been unmotivated to go. I skipped Thursday because I stayed up too late FOR NO REASON AT ALL. Why do I do that to myself? It’s kind of like the eating late at night thing. I’m on the couch. I know I should go to bed. I’m tired, that’s for sure, but no, I just sit there procrastinating bed time like a child. Regretting it every morning like an addict.

So I sent out that tweet, laid out my workout clothes, set the alarm and went to bed.

This morning I wake up moments before my alarm was set to go off.

Or so I thought.

I hopped out of bed. Shut off the alarm. Got dressed. Brushed my teeth. And headed downstairs. That’s when I heard the baby stir.

Hmmm. He’s never up before 7, that’s odd.

I shrug my shoulders and keep going. The husbands home and he can get the baby if he wakes up while I’m at the gym. This is the only time I have to go, and I’m going!

I let the cat out and notice it’s raining. I tweet this…

DAMN. I really want to run to the gym. Oh, it’s only a drizzle. I’ll be fine.

So I lace up and head out the door.

About 2 minutes in the sky opens up and literally dumps buckets of water on my head as if to tell me I made a horrible, horrible decision. Now I’m going to be soaked during body pump.

Oh, well. I’m usually a hot sweaty mess. This will probably feel good.

I run through a neighboring community and across the walking path to the main road. It’s so busy I can hardly cross.

There must an accident on the highway and everyone’s getting detoured to the secondaries. There’s never this must traffic at 5:50

I think to myself.

I get to the gym and hand my badge to the receptionist. She says, "You’re late this morning."

"Yeah, I was debating running in the rain." I said.

But then I looked at the clock and I was actually a minute or 2 earlier than I am normally for class.

She must know class has already started or something. That’s strange.

I walk towards the studio and notice an empty room.

wow. Where is everyone? There’s usually at least 10 of us.

I go to open the door and there’s the instructor and another woman walking out. They look at me funny. I glance over at the clock…

it’s 6:59!

NOT 5:59.

I’m an HOUR LATE!

I look back over at the instructor and say, laughing, "You aren’t going to believe this. I’m an hour late. I really thought it was 6 o’clock!"

We all laugh.

"At least you ran." She said.

" *sigh* yeah, I’ll get a good 2.5 miles in, but still… I was really looking forward to class!"

We’re all still laughing.

"Well, now you’ll have a fun story to tell everyone today. You can blog it."

HA! That’s exactly what I’ll do.

Lesson Learned: Don’t only look at the minute hands when scheduling the alarm and checking the time. Especially when busy and overwhlemed. That first number holds some very important information!

There’s Something To This Green Tea Thing For Weight Loss. Allow Me To Explain…

Remember when I asked the question, “will green tea make my fatty parts melt?“? That’s when I told you about my kids’ chubby Pediatrician who is chubby no more. He credits green tea drinking for his weight loss.

And remember how I shared with you how I incorporate green tea drinking into my Shakeology 3-Day Cleanses with good success?

Welp, I’m not blogging live from the Pediatrician’s office and not currently on a Cleanse, but something interesting is still happening. I started drinking 1 cup of green tea per day since the cold weather is back again. I’m not doing anything else different. And I gotta tell you, that measly 1 cup-o green tea is making me go pee-pee more. Black tea does NOT have this same affect on me.

Turn outs green tea acts as a diuretic. Lots of people have experienced the same pee-peeing thing as me. Is this how green tea partly accomplishes its proclaimed weight loss wonders? Welp, maybe, I guess. Green tea can obviously be good for people who need to let go of excess water weight that no doubt skews the number on the scale.

But there’s more to the green tea weight loss story….

From University of Maryland Medical Center:

Clinical studies suggest that green tea extract may boost metabolism and help burn fat. One study confirmed that the combination of green tea and caffeine improved weight loss and maintenance in overweight and moderately obese individuals. Some researchers speculate that substances in green tea known as polyphenols, specifically the catechins, are responsible for the herb’s fat-burning effect… [full article]

When I hear phrases like “fat burning effect” I tend to get skeptical, but green tea is a natural substance we’re talking about here. Green tea is food for our bodies. And the right food at that! Foods such as this truly have the power to heal, restore and make whole. This is a plus for me since love green tea so much, but which brands I am drinking? There are two green teas I prefer and recommend.

The 1st tea I recommend is Twinings of London Mint Green Tea.

Many green teas can very bold and bitter, but Twinings’ is my everyday tea because it doesn’t have those traits. The mint blend makes this tea experience much flavorful and easy for your taste buds to enjoy. You should easily be able to find Twinings on any grocery store shelf, but if not, you can get it online right here. Just watch the labeling because Twinings also has a regular green tea, so snag the right package. Make sure it says “mint green tea”.

The 2nd tea I recommend is Sencha Organic Green Tea.

Sencha was difficult to find at a regular store. I didn’t find it there at all, actually. I had to drive a few towns over to one of those hippie organic stores to pick up my Sencha. I read good stuff about it online, so I just had to taste it for myself. Although it’s organic, its surprisingly cheap to buy. Sencha is a full flavor green tea (no mint mix), but it somehow accomplishes a smooth, light flavor with no strong bitterness. It’s perfect!

I’m obviously going continue with my green tea drinking for warmth and leisurely enjoyment, but now I’ll also be paying close attention to how green tea possibly ushers me into my fitness goals faster.

I sweeten my tea with Stevia in the Raw, which you can definitely get at the grocery store. It’s a natural, zero calorie sweetener (not a chemical) derived from the Stevia Rebaudiana plant. But please, don’t buy the Truvia brand of Stevia – it’s got extra stuff added into it.

One word of caution: Drinking green tea on an empty stomach makes my tummy hurt. This may not happen to you, but if it does, just know that you have to eat something first (problem solved). There’s a ton of health benefits to green tea, including cardiovascular health and cancer prevention. Green tea is even linked to flu prevention, so drink up!

Happy tea sloshing, baby.

Where There’s Fish, There’s Tartar Sauce

Many of you probably saw this photo on Lynn’s Weigh on Facebook: pickled herring at a salad bar. Only in Minnesota. And apparently Wisconsin. And maybe even North Dakota, but that hasn’t been verified yet.
I love herring. Grew up eating it out of the jar, same way I slugged orange juice from the container with the fridge door open. Of course at the herring salad bar last week, being the good Norwegian vegetarian I am, I put together a salad sans fish. The dressings weren’t marked, so I put a few that I recognized – or thought I recognized – on a plate to dip my salad in. I walked back to the table, where my brother was cutting into an egg (over-easy). It was the first day he’d been hungry in weeks due to an adverse reaction to an anti-seizure drug. He’d developed every side effect known including mood swings and lack of appetite – two things Minnesota Norwegians are not known for. So the whole wheat toast, sausage and hash browns that lined the periphery of his plate didn’t bother me one bit. The man is 6’1, weighs 150 pounds, and hasn’t enjoyed a bite of food since his 12-hour brain beating in late June. He’d earned some food love. Uncle Bonehead with our niece MichaelaI dived into my salad, dipping forkfuls into a little of this dressing, a little of that dressing, a little of…what the…?
“Oh my gosh,” I exclaimed in my reacquired Minnesota accent. “That’s tartar sauce!”
Marty looked up from his plate and, without missing a beat, said, “What did you expect? Where there’s fish, there’s tartar sauce.”
Since arriving a week ago, I’ve felt a little like herring at a salad bar. Something not expected, but when you look at it in its context (Minnesota = herring), it makes sense.
Recently I’ve been struggling with a changing body and changing metabolism; gaining a bit of weight and not working out like I want to because of physical issues. The “salad bar” that is my maintenance got thrown a big old herring last week when I flew out to Minnesota to help take care of my brother. It’s not that I can’t eat healthy on the go. I’m the queen of eating healthy. But that herring – my Achilles Heel – is that when I get stressed and totally focused, I tend to eat haphazardly or not understand or care how something’s prepared, and...holy crapola…I consume the white flour. I wake up every morning with the intention of eating clean, but sometimes I end the day wondering what the hell I ate.
But where there’s fish, there’s tartar sauce. And today, that surprising “dip of the salad” was a bike ride through the hidden places behind tree-lined neighborhoods and out of sight from the freeways I’ve driven a million times.
My brother is (not at the moment, but will be again) an avid biker. He has a kickass hybrid, and its just the right size to accommodate my long legs. He brought it out for me and made sure the air pressure was right. The seat was a piece of heaven on my butt, and the grippers on his pedals are what I’ll be asking for when my birthday rolls around in a few weeks. I started out on the Cedar Lake Trail and ran into a whole lot of others. Marty doesn’t have an odometer on his bike, so I don’t know how far I went, but it took me 70 minutes to do it. It was the best bike ride of my life. And this:

And I rode underneath the walkway to Target Field, where I was yesterday on the comfy club level, thanks to tix from a very nice boss :)

Yesterday at Target Field on a much needed break with my awesomely cool sister-in-law:

This has been a challenging week for me, no doubt. But it’s way more challenging, of course, for Marty. He’s been thrown a herring the size of a Volkswagen, and those of us involved with his care are trying…trying…to find him some tartar sauce. Strange analogy, I know. But we’re Minnesotans. We get it, don’t ya know? Yah…I’m sure you do, eh.Thank you so much for keeping Marty in your thoughts. Seeing him cry is killer. Killer. Marty's a good guy who just needs a break and a whole lot of time to heal. We're all just praying his brain cooperates.

There’s Still a Fire Burning

90 Days of Shakeology: Days 17-21 Well, it looks like I’m officially in Smooth Sailing mode. Everything has leveled out into the upper-echelons of energy, appetite control and plain ‘ole bliss. Days 17-21 ran into my weekend. My busy weekend mommy-mode typically leaves me feeling rundown, tore up and whimpering with pathetic sorrows. But alas! This is a new experience EVER IN MY LIFE that I have not whimpered or felt like a de-energized floor mat. Not even my No-Sugar Experiment (which was still frackin’ awesome) trumps the high energy levels I have right now. I can handle mommy-mode like the Energizer Bunny. In a nutshell, I just don’t get exhausted like I used to. Sure, I get tired. I yawn and I nap at will, but except for that “all-my-fault” incident I recorded on Days 13-14, the sorrows of exhaustion are not part of life like they used to be. In other news, I finally got around to posting my Day 18 body picture. As of that day, I officially lost 4.2 pounds since starting Shakeology. Pretty awesome stuff. Let’s keep this thing rollin’.
