Food Find: Fuel for Fire: Fruit + Protein

Hey guys! I had a few hours to myself this morning so I decided to get a little workout in at a CrossFit gym just a few blocks from the hotel. It’s called SolCity and they let me pop into their morning class.

They also had a really intriguing product for sale so I decided to pick up a few to review in a quick video this morning …

Please excuse the quality. Not that my other videos have high production values or anything but I recorded this one straight to YouTube. I’ve never done that before.

Let me know in the comments what you think about Fuel For Fire or if you tried them before. I really like the idea of a protein-filled fruit pouch. Great for snacking on the go, or dorm rooms, or office drawers. Places where keeping fresh foods aren’t really an option.

Home Workout Essentials: NOW Foods Organic Whey Protein Powder

Why even use protein powder in the first place? Why not just eat this instead?

Welp, protein powder is an individual decision. I knew dang well my continued body transformation and elevated sexiness ratio would require additional protein, especially since I don’t eat a ton of meat.

So I did my due diligence before my first purchase of NOW Foods Organic 100% Pure Whey Protein Isolate. I sought the opinion of protein users that I know. I read labels and did side-by-side comparisons with my eyeballs. I lurked on forums where people discuss protein powders. I read testimonials on review sites. And I didn’t rush in. I took my time with all of this before deciding on NOW.

Many of the most infamous brands out there I instantly scratched & clawed off my list with my bare fingernails because of the crap they contain. If the protein powder contains Aspartame, Sucralose or Acesulfame-K, it’s not getting near my food trap. If you’re using a powder already and it contains one of these ingredients, please consider running far away from it. Those are artificial sweeteners and they are NOT good for your health.

NOW Foods is family owned and been around since 1968. They take a clean, organic approach to their products. Here’s what they say about the protein powder:

“NOW® Certified Organic Whey Protein is an all-natural whey protein that is concentrated from organic milk, which was produced without the use of synthetic growth hormones (rBGH), antibiotics, or pesticides. It is processed by low temperature ultrafiltration to limit denaturation of the proteins, and is both bioavailable and easily digested.”

Complete supplement/nutrition facts

But How’s The Taste and Other Benefits?

Now contains NO sugar and has 24 grams of protein per scoop. It dissolves well in liquids and is virtually flavorless. It’s proven to be a wonderful protein-boost in my morning Shakeology feeding. Check it out:

15 grams in Shakeology + 24 grams in NOW = 39 grams of protein

I’ve been using the Whey powder for over a month now. I haven’t had any stomach issues, including no bellyaching, bloating or farting symptoms that protein bars used to give me. Because the last thing I wanna do is fart in my office and then a co-worker walks in. Yes, that’s happened to me before.

One of other key benefits has been the powder’s ability to aid in my muscle recovery after a badass workout. I’m experiencing less soreness and faster recovery time in general, which means I can resume further badass-ness with minimal delays. NOW Foods Protein Powder is definitely a new, permanent fixture among my Home Workout Essentials. Go on and read more NOW testimonials for yourself and decide if it’s right for YOU.

Booyah!

Chocolate Protein Cake (guest post).

I’ve been on this healthier-me quest for almost five years now, but I only recently tumbled to the miracle that is the Chocolate Protein Cake (and some people say Pinterest is just a big time suck).

When I think of how many mornings I could have had chocolate cake for breakfast…well, it doesn’t help to dwell on the past.

Instead I’ll pass along my version of the Chocolate Protein Cake, only slightly adapted from the one I found on Foods of April , just in case I’m not the only one on the planet who’s late to the protein cake party.

Ingredients:
15 grams protein powder (This is one scoop of GNC unsweetened soy protein isolate; your powder & scoop size may vary.)
1 tbsp 100% cocoa powder (I use dark chocolate–swoon)
1/4 tsp baking powder
2 packets stevia (or sweetener of choice–it does need it if you’re using unsweetened protein powder. Trust me.)
1 tbsp pure pumpkin or applesauce
 3 tbsp. Egg Beaters Whites
dash of cinnamon
drop or two vanilla

Stir it all together in a microwaveable mug or small bowl and zap it for 60-70 seconds, depending on your microwave.

Then carefully, because it’s H-O-T!, remove it from the microwave and loosen the edges with a knife or spoon before upending the cup and plopping the cake onto your plate or, um, your paper towel/aluminum foil if you’re cooking to go.

Don’t worry if it looks a little, ahem, ugly, it’s CAKE.

In addition to its yummiliciousness, what makes this cake such a perfect start to the morning is that it’s packed with protein (almost 20g!) and has only 115 calories with the brands I use.

This means that you can “frost” it with a healthy scoop of Greek yogurt, some chia seed pudding, or a tablespoon (or two) of nut butter without breaking the calorie bank. Cake for breakfast can be healthy. Who knew?!

Cammy hopped off the diet-go-round five years ago and never went back. Instead, she focused on making small, sustainable changes over time, found joy (and cupcakes) in small victories, and lost 100 pounds along the way. She blogs at The Tippy Toe Diet and Serentipity.

Premier Nutrition High Protein Strawberry Shake Review

Premier Nutrition High Protein Strawberry Shake

A carton of Premier Nutrition High Protein Strawberry Shake has "30 grams of protein" displayed in big letters across the front of the packaging - and that alone was enough to get me to try it. When I further saw that there was only 160 calories and 1 gram of sugars in the 11 ounce container - well, I had to open this ready-to-drink shake immediately to see what the taste was like.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 shake (11 ounces)
Calories: 160
Total Fat: 3 grams, 5%
Saturated Fat: 1 gram, 5%
Sodium: 330 mg, 14%
Carbohydrates: 3 grams
Fiber: 2 grams, 6%
Sugars: 1 gram
Protein: 30 grams

What I found was that this was pretty darn good. It's actually sweet - very sweet - and very creamy, like whole fat milk with some strawberry syrup added. This is actually now my new favorite protein shake - although I still heart you EAS Myoplex Lite Chocolate Fudge Protein Shake (Review), which I love, but Premier Nutrition High Protein Strawberry Shake not only tastes fantastic, but it has more protein, less calories and less sugars.

Each 11 ounce carton of Premier Nutrition High Protein Strawberry Shake provides 160 calories from 30 grams of protein, only 1 gram of sugars, 2 grams of fiber (6% of the daily value) and 3 grams of total fat, 1 gram of which is saturated fat (5% of the DV for both). There is also 25% of the DV for many vitamins and minerals.

Coupons.com

According to the ingredients list, the protein blend is a mixture of milk protein (milk protein concentrate and milk protein isolate), calcium caseinate and whey protein concentrate. The sweeteners used are sucralose and acesulfame K.

I received samples of Premier Nutrition High Protein Strawberry Shake to consider for review, but it's available for purchase on the Premier Nutrition website at 4 for $7.99. I also saw it at Sam's Club - $17.58 for a 12 pack. At that price, it's certainly worth buying.

Lightlife Smart Wings (Honey BBQ) Veggie Protein Wings Review

Lightlife Smart Wings (Honey BBQ) Veggie Protein Wings

I thought that perhaps one of the reasons I didn't like the LightLife Buffalo Smart Wings (Review) was because I prepared it in the microwave as opposed to the preferred method of pan-searing it. This time, I wasn't going to make that same mistake. I got my pan out, and followed the directions for that method of preperation for the (meatless) Lightlife Honey BBQ Smart Wings. Unfortunately, I know now that making it that way does NOT improve the taste any.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 4 wings (85 grams)
Calories: 120
Total Fat: 0%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: 430 mg, 18%
Carbohydrates: 16 grams
Fiber: 4 grams, 16%
Sugar: 9 grams
Protein: 13 grams

I said it before, and I'll say it again - it really is an insult to "wings" to have that in the title of this product, and it does the product a disservice to have people thinking that this might be similar to wings. It's not ... not even a little bit. It only slightly resembles a wing drumette - and it doesn't have the same texture or taste. The texture is like veggie protein, compact & dry without the sauce. It's not juicy and not even the honey barbecue sauce is the best thing about the product - sweet and slightly tangy, but it wasn't enough to make me like it.

The nutrition facts are pretty good though. Each serving of 4 Lightlife Honey BBQ Smart Wings provides 120 calories, no fat, 430 mg sodium (18% of the daily value), 4 grams of fiber (16% of the DV), 9 grams of sugars and 13 grams of protein.

Coupons.com

The ingredients list starts with water, soy protein concentrate, wheat gluten, soy protein isolate and egg white powder. A package with 8 Lightlife Honey BBQ Smart Wings (2 servings), cost $3.99 at my local grocery store - but I received samples of this to consider for review.

Although there are some good reviews of LightLife products, this is not one that I enjoyed. But Lisa at HealthNutxo loved them - so let's hear from you - have you tried these before? What did you think?

Protein Powder De-Virginator

So many people are doing it. Should I be doing it, too? Shhhh! …I’m a protein powder virgin.

I’ve never had a scoop or packet for supplemental purposes. Just call me a hippie, because I’ve always got my fix from natural sources like tuna, beans and Greek Yogurt. Limiting my carbs and increasing proteins began the journey to controlling my Greedy for good.

(Protein keeps you fuller than carbs. It just does.)

Then I introduced Shakeology to my double stomachs with its 16-18grams of protein. But eh, the shake is a complete meal, not a protein powder, so a virgin I still remain. With these torturous workouts I’ve been ‘flicting upon myself lately, I’m beginning to wonder if extra protein is necessary.

Do you, my fellow protein virgin, also wonder for yourself?

To avoid the dreary fate of crawling under a desk in confusion, I checked in with my buddy and fitness guru, Rog Law, to get his take on the situation. This is what he told me….

“The biggest reason to use a protein supplement is simply convenience. In a society where everyone is constantly on the go, this is one the easiest ways that you can get something healthy in on the go. Add that to the fact that most people (especially women) are notorious for not even getting in the RDA amount of protein, which is pretty low to begin with, and you have a solid case for adding more protein into your diet. Protein will also keep you full for longer in comparison to carbohydrates or fat, which goes a long way towards slaying the hunger beast.”

Then my cranium went half numb from thinking about Whey Protein vs. Soy Protein. And what the hell is Concentrate vs. Isolate!?

Despite my many virginistic questions, I’m sure I could probably benefit from a protein powder. But instead of throwing darts at the Google to pick the best powders, I asked some of my protein-wielding peeps which brands they recommend.

Insight From The Protein Wielders

Rog uses different varieties of Optimum Nutrition. He explained that you can get it at the Vitamin Shoppe, but make sure to ask for online pricing. It’s a big discount that’s not advertised. A 4.5 pound jug goes for around $50 and lasts about 60 days. It has 60 grams protein per serving (whoa), but you can use a 1/2 serving instead to stretch it longer.

Todd also uses Optimum Nutrition. He reviewed their 100% Whey Protein here.

Karen uses NOW Whey Protein Isolate and JC uses TrueProtein Casein with premium chocolate and EAS Whey (vanilla or chocolate).

Kohy prefers the “lighter tasting” low calorie, low carb protein shake VPX SRO Zero Carb. He also recommends his personal favorite, Dymatize Elite XT (formerly known as Elite 12hr), for those who prefer a more filling, shake with some body.

Jody has been using Met-Rx since the early 1990's. She is currently supplementing with their Protein Plus variety, which is almost all protein and a few carbs. Jody uses the supplement to make smoothies and adds it to oatmeal to make protein bars and cookies. She also mixes it with water or unsweetened vanilla almond milk for a mini meal. Yet despite Jody’s love for Met-Rx, she also gives Nutrabolics Isobolic Triple Isolate Protein Matrix a major-serious thumbs up.

Aren’t the Protein Wielders fantastic? They sure do make it easy for us to be lazy researchers so we can de-virginate with ease.

But for me? Not today. Not yet. I’m still gonna take this thing slooow. Let me soak up their recommendations and do some comparison-ing before I choose which powder to try out first.

So how about YOU? Will you de-virginate soon? Or have you been protein powdering for a while now?

(5/31/11 Edit: Some commenters have made good points that protein powders have fillers and unpronounceable ingredients. NOT liking that at all. Nooope.)

LightLife Smart Wings (Buffalo) Veggie Protein Wings Review

Lightlife Smart Wings (Buffalo) Veggie Protein Wings

LightLife Buffalo Smart Wings is described on the packaging as veggie protein wings, i.e. a vegetarian option to Buffalo chicken wings. The description on their website reads, "It's about to get a little spicy in here, folks. Our juicy wings are bringing all kinds of sassy sauce to the table, whether it's a party or a plain old Tuesday. So pick up a box and start wingin' it!" Please note the words in bold, we'll come back to them later.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 4 wings (85 grams)
Calories: 110
Total Fat: 3 grams, 5%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: 680 mg, 28%
Carbohydrates: 6 grams
Fiber: 4 grams, 16%
Sugar: < 1 gram
Protein: 13 grams

Let me start by saying, if you love wings, as I do, LEAVE this product alone. You will not be happy. You WILL think it's an insult to have the term "wings" in the product name. And "Smart Wings" at that. Of course, this is a vegetarian version, but some things are better left in the meat eating world, and this is a prime example. But, I might have to take some of the blame for making a lackluster product from these vegetarian wings. The directions for preparation on the box provided a "Skillet" and Microwave method. I did it in the microwave and that probably wasn't the best way - over at 125 Pounds, they had a good review of the pan-seared wings - but they did give me a choice!

Now, there are some redeeming qualities to LightLife Buffalo Smart Wings ... or rather, there is one redeeming quality ... the "buffalo" sauce isn't terrible. I wouldn't go so far as to call it "spicy" either, but it was flavorful. And while these veggie wings didn't come out dry, I also wouldn't call have referred to them as "juicy". What really weirded me out was the texture of these wing-shaped, veggie protein pieces. It's better if I wasn't thinking "wings" and was thinking textured protein - then this would have tasted just about as I expected.

sponsor
Workout Music Playlists at IntheGym.net

A serving of 4 "wings" provides 110 calories, 3 grams of total fat (5% of the daily value), no saturated fat, 680 mg sodium (28% of the DV), 4 grams of fiber (16% of the DV), less than 1 gram of sugar and 13 grams of protein (here's the ingredients list). This is way healthier than traditional chicken wings! On it's own, I have to say this product is lackluster. But it seems like it would work if it were cut up and incorporated into a tasty pasta or rice dish.

The suggested retail price of a 6 ounce box of LightLife Buffalo Smart Wings with 2 servings is $4.79. I received samples of this product to review, and I hate that I have to give it a bad write-up, but thankfully, I know LightLife makes some great vegetarian products, like Lightlife Smart Deli Pepperoni, Lightlife Smart Bacon and Lightlife Smart Deli Bologna Style Veggie Protein Slices.
Have you ever tried vegetarian wings?

Protein: secret weapon for weight loss? | Weight Loss Hypnosis Formula

The Zone. Atkins. Protein Power. these are just a few of the high-protein diets that have come to public attention in recent years and with trim celebrity followers such as Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Alba, it is not hard to think that they are on to something.

But will eating more protein really help you lose weight?

Leederville-based dietitian Anderson Jones said numerous recent studies reported higher protein intakes being linked to greater weight loss.

“These are not conclusive however, with other studies showing that high-carbohydrate and vegetarian diets can have the same result,” he said.

Mr Jones said it was important to note that the vast majority of these weight-loss studies followed only subjects for a number of weeks or months.

“It is well recognised that weight regain from around six months is extremely common and can result in people putting back all the weight they lost,” he said.

He said a big study by scientists from Harvard and Louisiana State universities followed subjects for two years after a weight-loss diet.

“They investigated different combinations of protein, fat and carbohydrate and concluded that there was no difference between the diets,” he said.

Mr Jones said any diet that lowered energy intake would achieve weight loss, but healthy weight loss was a case of making sustainable dietary changes and getting adequate support from a dietitian.

“A higher-protein diet can achieve long-term weight loss, so long as it meets these requirements,” he said.

Mr Jones said protein had a greater effect on satiety than carbohydrate or fat, meaning eating protein helped create a feeling of fullness easily.

Diet Biz nutritionist and sports dietician Boris Kazakov said while some studies concluded that high-protein diets could promote a feeling of fullness, it did not guarantee that increasing your protein intake would help you lose weight.

“To date there is no secret weapon for weight loss,” he said.

“For effective long-term weight loss you need to make small, achievable changes to your lifestyle.”

The Nutrition Specialists dietitian and Dietitians Association of Australia spokeswoman Margaret Hays said as a general guide the average adult needed one gram of protein per kilogram of body weight, with protein needs increasing during times of cell growth and repair such as during childhood and adolescence, pregnancy and lactation, and after illness or surgery.

HEALTHY PROTEIN SOURCES: • 2 small eggs = 10g • 1 cup of low-fat milk = 10g• 120g of lean red meat = 32g• 1/2 cooked skinless chicken breast = 22g• 30g of reduced-fat cheddar cheese = 10g• 100g can of tuna = 28g • 4 slices of wholegrain bread = 10g• 1 cup of cooked rice = 4g• 1 large can of baked beans = 10g• 30g of almonds = 6gDiet Biz nutritionist and sports dietitian Boris Kazakov.

EAS Myoplex Lite Chocolate Fudge Protein Shake Review

EAS Myoplex Lite Chocolate Fudge Protein Shake

EAS Myoplex Lite Ready to Drink Protein Shake is described as, "a calorie friendly shake that helps to maintain lean muscle." The "Lite" version has the sweeteners sucralose (aka Splenda) and acesulfame K, to keep the sugar grams down. I received samples of the Chocolate Fudge variety to try out - well, mostly I wanted the husband to try it because he drinks protein shakes after he works out ... and he's not into products that use high intensity sweeteners, so I was really curious to see what his reaction would be.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 8 ounces
Calories: 170
Total Fat: 2 grams, 3%
Saturated Fat: 0.5 grams, 3%
Sodium: 240 mg, 10%
Carbohydrates: 20 grams
Fiber: 5 grams, 20%
Sugar: 4 grams
Protein: 20 grams

Both he and I loved this flavor. It's not too sweet, and the consistency is like milk ... chocolate milk. There are no off-flavors, or anything to give away the fact that high-intensity sweeteners are used. I wouldn't have used the word "fudge" anywhere in the naming though, since that conjures up images of a thick, intensely sweet shake - which this is not. Still, I don't want to take away from the fact that this is one tasty, ready to drink, protein-packed punch.

Each 8 ounce serving provides 170 calories, 2 grams of total fat, of which 0.5 grams is saturated (both 3% of the daily value), 5 grams of fiber (20% of the DV), 4 grams of sugars and 20 grams of protein.

The ingredients list includes milk protein concentrate as the protein source. As I mentioned before, I received samples of EAS Myople Lite Ready to Drink Protein Shake, but I saw them at my local grocery store, a 4-pack for $7.29! That's very expensive and probably that price is the only thing that would make me think twice about buying these in the future. I hope there are coupons somewhere, and that they regularly go on sale.

The great thing about investing in weight loss protein supplements like acai berry and resveratrol is that you will not only feel energized and watch your jean size shrink, but you will also look and feel that much healthier and younger.

This is a healthy way to really look your best, get rid of wrinkles, and to slim down. The following are just some of the many things that weight loss protein supplements can offer you.

Paula de la Torre Editor of the “Best Weight Loss Supplements” website — http://www.BestWeightLossSupplements.tv — pointed out;

“… Forget coffee: if you invest in top notch weight loss supplements, you can be sure to see your energy levels increase. This is a great thing because it’s a sign that your pills and products are doing their job…”

Often, when one’s metabolism is sped up and when they’re digestive system is working right, natural energy levels will be boosted. Thus, if you invest in something like acai berry, you can be sure to really feel as if you are ready to take on the world.

And of course, once the weight slips off, your self esteem and confidence levels will also increase. Similarly, the wrinkles in your face will fade as much as your weight decreases and your energy increases. An upbeat or healthy metabolism means your body’s cells will regenerate faster than ever before. Thus, your skin’s wrinkles will fade without costly cosmetic surgeries and treatments.

“… Investing in top notch weight loss supplements is important if you want to really change how you look. This means that you can look into the mirror and truly see a brand new you…” P. de la Torre added.

With the added benefits of increased energy levels and confidence, you can be sure to see some serious benefits. This really is a great way to feel and look your best and to be as healthy as possible.

Chocolite Protein Cookies N Cream Bar (Sugar Free)

Chocolite Protein Cookies N Cream BarAfter experiencing the delicious and nutritious sugar free Chocolite Protein Peanut Butter Bar, I decided to go through my stash and try another flavor. The Chocolite Protein Cookies N Cream Bar looked like just the thing to have after a long hard workout.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 34 grams
Calories: 95
Total Fat: 3 grams, 5%
Saturated Fat: 2 grams, 10%
Sodium: 135 mg, 6%
Carbohydrates: 17 grams
Fiber: 9 grams, 38%
Sugars: 0 grams
Sugar Alcohols: 4 grams
Protein: 9 grams

I opened the bar to taste it and found a nice milky chocolate flavor with a chewy texture, along with a caramel layer on the bottom that was delicious ... I wouldn't say that there was a cookies n cream flavor, but it was still tasty just the same.

Each 34 gram Chocolite Protein Cookies N Cream Bar is gluten- and sugar-free, and provides 95 calories, 3 grams of total fat, 2 grams of which is saturated, 9 grams of fiber, 4 grams of sugar alcohols plus 9 grams of protein and fiber (38% of the daily value). There is also a slew of vitamins and minerals (15-30% for each).

The ingredients list starts with a protein blend of non-GMO Soy Protein Isolate and Whey Protein Isolate. These bars are available online at Netrition, $16.99 for a box with 16 bars (+ shipping).

Considering that fiber and protein account for more than 75% of the calories, this is a pretty good snack, and it's tasty too. BUT if something is described as having a "cookies n cream" flavor, then my taste buds start expecting that - and this just doesn't deliver on that promise. So for that reason, I prefer the Chocolite Protein Peanut Butter Bar.
