Food Find: Fuel for Fire: Fruit + Protein

Hey guys! I had a few hours to myself this morning so I decided to get a little workout in at a CrossFit gym just a few blocks from the hotel. It’s called SolCity and they let me pop into their morning class.

They also had a really intriguing product for sale so I decided to pick up a few to review in a quick video this morning …

Please excuse the quality. Not that my other videos have high production values or anything but I recorded this one straight to YouTube. I’ve never done that before.

Let me know in the comments what you think about Fuel For Fire or if you tried them before. I really like the idea of a protein-filled fruit pouch. Great for snacking on the go, or dorm rooms, or office drawers. Places where keeping fresh foods aren’t really an option.

Food Trap Alert! Voskos Greek Yogurt, Dr. Praegers Sweet Potato Pancakes and Dole Fruit Smoothie Shakers

Voskos Greek Yogurt: Huh? Who? What’s this yogurt? Can it compete with that big dawg, Chobani? Voskos is thick & silky. Tastes pretty good, too. But it has less fruit chunks than Chobani and a bit more tangy tartness on the taste buds. That tang actually points to less sugar, but it also has less protein than Chobani. Voskos is nice and fancy with the “no GMO’s and no artificial hormones” hoopla, so why the hells does strawberry flavor contain modified corn starch? It’s more than likely used as a thickening agent. Because it can’t get thick on it’s own? Modified corn starch is like Viagra for yogurt. Be careful because the Voskos label warns that the product “contains milk”. Are there really people out there with such deep levels of stupid that they can’t figure that out?

Price Paid: $1.50, Calories 120, Fat Cal 0, Total Fat 0g, Sodium 50mg, Carbs, 16g, Fiber 0g, Sugars 15g, Protein 12g

Dr. Praeger’s Sweet Potato Pancakes: Excuse me, but no. These are not the kind of cakes you drench in a tsunami of syrup. These cakes are made for healthy snacking, a light meal, side-dishing, or something along those lines. They’ve won a place in my stomachs that can’t be beat by any other sweet potatoe-ish packaged product. They’ll remind you of a hash brown. Nice and hearty, too. Just bake it up for a few minutes on each side and begin to bask in tasty clean eating gone all kinds of wonderfully right. The fine list of acceptable ingredients is “Sweet Potatoes, Egg Whites, Potato Flakes, Onions, Expeller Pressed Canola Oil, Arrowroot, Brown Sugar, Salt, Pepper”. Ahhhh. Now go. Go enjoy some for yourself.

Price Paid $4.29, Calories 80, Fat Cal 20, Total Fat 2g, Sodium 140mg, Carbs 12g, Fiber 1g, Sugars 6g, Protein 2g

Dole Fruit Smoothie Shakers:  This is a “fruit & yogurt kit” that you pour juice into. Then you shake it up and it transforms into a smoothie. No blender required. The concept is great, but there’s too many gray area variables that can screw with the final result. My freezer is apparently freezier than the one at the store. I had to semi-thaw out the contents before it would even shake & mix. You pour the juice of your choice up to the “fill zone” before shaking. I did that. But the shake tasted more like the juice than anything else. It did achieve an impressive smoothie consistency, but overall, it’s not a win. People who don’t usually do smoothies might think the world of Fruit Smoothie Shakers, but if you’re a smoothie-making connoisseur like I am, it might just piss you off.

Price Paid: $3.99, Calories 90 (w/o juice), Fat Cal 20, Total Fat 2g, Sodium 35mg, Carbs 17g, Fiber 3g, Sugars 23g, Protein 3g

Video Product Review and Giveaway: That’s It Fruit Bars

My first video product review. How fun are these? Well, for me at least.

Less Writing = Less Typos. Considering my track record, that’s a bonus. HOWEVER, instead of a typo I made a ‘speach-o.’ Throughout the video I say “Peach” when I really mean “Apricot.” The three flavors are Cherry, Pear and APRICOT. Not Peach. Oy vey.

Here’s the deal. Watch the video, leave a comment and be entered to win your very own box of That’s It to try for yourself. That’s 12 free bars! I’ll pick a winner on Wednesday. Sorry, U.S. residents only. :(

Disclaimer: This is a paid review. ‘That’s It’ compensated me for posting as well and provided the bars free of charge. All opinions expressed are my own.

Jamba Peach Blackberry Smash Fruit Sorbet Bar Review

Jamba Peach Blackberry Smash Fruit Sorbet Bar

The bright colors of the box of Jamba Peach Blackberry Smash Fruit Sorbet Bar made me check it out, and when I realized that it was only 70 calories per bar - well, enough said right there, it was coming home with me.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 bar (63 grams)
Calories: 70
Total Fat: 0%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: 15 mg, 1%
Carbohydrates: 20 grams
Fiber: 3 grams, 12%
Sugars: 14 grams

This fruit sorbet bar doesn't mimic an ice cream bar, but instead has it's own tangy, fruity flavor going on, and I like. It does melt in your mouth as you work on each delicious bite, and it's just the perfect size for an evening nosh. Compared to Yolato Pomegranato Frozen Yogurt Gelato Bars (Review), this Jamba bar has 10 fewer calories, the same amount of sugars (14 grams) and 3 grams of fiber but no protein (the Yolato bar has no fiber but 2 grams of protein).

Jamba Peach Blackberry Smash Fruit Sorbet Bars are all natural, non-fat and made with real fruit. The ingredients are, water, sugar, tapioca syrup, peaches, blackberries, soluble corn fiber, peach juice concentrate, natural flavors, citric acid, guar gum, locust bean gum, tapioca starch, fruit juice and anatto (color), ascorbic acid (vitamin C).

I purchased a box with 4 Jamba Peach Blackberry Smash Fruit Sorbet Bars for $3.99, and I would buy this again - it won't leave you yearning for an ice-cream bar at all.

That's It Fruit Bar (Apple and Pear) Review

Thats It Fruit Bar

Have you seen many food products with less than 3 (or even 5) ingredients? I haven't, so I was quite intrigued when That's It let me know about their fruit bars. Fruit is the ONLY ingredient, so the Apple and Pear Bar for example, only has apple & pear in the ingredients list! That's It!

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 bar (35 grams)
Calories: 100
Total Fat: 0%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: 15 mg, 1%
Carbohydrates: 27 grams
Fiber: 3 grams, 12%
Sugars: 24 grams
Protein: 1 gram

And the bar is amazingly tasty. It's a little sticky - all the more fun to tear off a piece and eat it. The apple and pear flavor is a little mild in the taste department, but I liked it - fruity and not too sweet in taste- surprisingly. Of course, since it is just fruit in the ingredients list, you know there's going to be quite a bit of sugars.

Each 35 gram That's It Apple + Pear Bar provides 100 calories, no fat, 1 gram of protein, 3 grams of fiber (12% of the daily value) and 24 grams of sugars. That's a little less calories than the same amount of Stretch Island Fruit Leathers.

Coupons.com

That's It Fruit Bars are available for sale on their website, at $19.99 for a box with 12. Personally, I wouldn't consume such a product as just a snack - too much sugar - BUT it would be a great substitute for something you're eating that has just as much sugar & lots of fat - i.e. candy AND oh my, this is great during a long run or some other endurance activity. I only use gels, so I'm used to having to chew a little - and although I doubt I'll ever give up my Powerbar Energy Blasts, this made a nice "real food" addition to a recent "brick" workout (run-bike-run).

Power of Fruit (Original All Fruit) Bars Review

Power of Fruit (Original All Fruit) Bars

Ice pops are a must during summer. I know - lots of sugar and not much else, but that's why I'm hooked on Power of Fruit Bars. They sent me samples to try and I was bowled over by Power of Fruit CherryBerry Bars - only 35 calories and 5 grams of sugars. That flavor is just so fruity and delicious, but there are other varieties, so I excitedly tried the Original All Fruit Bars.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 bar (1.75 ounces)
Calories: 28
Total Fat: < 1%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: < 1%
Carbohydrates: 7 grams
Fiber: 1 gram, 4%
Sugars: 5 grams
Protein: < 1 gram

The ingredients in these ice pops are strawberries, cranberries, blueberries, mango chunks, pineapple, bananas, white grape juice concentrate and water. You can certainly tell there is a lot going on flavor-wise - the ice-pops have a little sweetness and the berries are strongly represented both in taste and in texture as you bite into fruitybits very often, but the taste of the banana threw me off a little - I'm not sure I like 'nanas in my ice-pops. I still liked this flavor but not as much as the Power of Fruit CherryBerry Bars.

Coupons.com

Each Power of Fruit Original All Fruit Bar (1.75 ounces), provides 28 calories and 5 grams of sugars. A box with 6 bars retails for $2.99-$3.89 - and worth it. They have coupons available from time to time on the Power of Fruit Facebook page, so stock up when it's possible. This wasn't my favorite flavor, but it was still good and I would buy it in the future.

Power of Fruit CherryBerry Bars Review

Power of Fruit CherryBerry Bars

I received samples of Power of Fruit CherryBerry Bars for review, and these might possible be my FAVORITE ice-pops type bar. If you don't read the rest of the review, here's what you need to know: Get. These. NOW!

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 bar (1.75 ounces)
Calories: 35
Total Fat: 0.2 grams, < 1%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: < 1%
Carbohydrates: 6 grams
Fiber: 1 gram, 4%
Sugars: 5 grams
Protein: < 1 gram

I can't even adequately describe how much these ice-pops (or fruit bars - call them what you will), rocked my world. It's tart and tangy and slightly sweet at the same time. But the best thing is that after sucking on these ice-pops, you'll come to bite on a piece of fruit ... a nice hunky chunk. This added texture is just amazing and adds a ton of interest in your mouth. You WILL be going mmm while sucking on this.

But what's even better - yes, it does get better - each 1.75 ounce Power of Fruit CherryBerry Bar provides only 5 grams of sugars and 35 calories, and 1/2 a daily fruit serving.

Power of Fruit CherryBerry Bars

Coupons.com

The ingredients in Power of Fruit CherryBerry Bars are simply, tart cherries, blueberries, apple, water and white grape juice concentrate. A box with 6 bars retails for $2.99-$3.89, They are available at most Whole Foods, Publix and soon Wegmans. Check out the Power of Fruit Facebook page where they are very active, and you might be able to score some coupons.

You can find ice-pops for cheaper, but this is totally worth the price. I now I'm going to be stocking up.

Welch's Fruit Snacks (Island Fruits) Review

Welch's Island Fruits Fruit Snacks

I spotted Welch's Island Fruits Fruit Snacks with a "Made with Real Fruit" stamp on the packaging and decided to check it out. I have to say I was skeptical about this claim since my experience with Fruit Snacks is that they are mostly sugars.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 pouch (25.5 grams)
Calories: 80
Total Fat: 0%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: 10 mg, < 1%
Carbohydrates: 19 grams
Fiber: 0%
Sugars: 11 grams
Protein: 1 gram

First thing I did was examine the ingredients list. It includes, juice from concentrates (grape, pear, peach, passion fruit and pineapple), corn syrup, sugar, modified corn starch, fruit purees (banana, mango, pineapple and kiwi), gelatin, citric acid, lactic acid, natural and artificial flavors, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), alpha tocopherol acetate (vitamin E), vitamin A palmitate, sodium citrate, coconut oil, carnuba wax, red 40, yellow 5 and blue 1.

With the added fruit purees I suppose this qualifies as "made from real fruit" but it's made from a whole lot of other things as well!

As for the taste - delicious as usual. Welch's Island Fruits Fruit Snacks has the characteristic chewy taste of fruit snacks, but although this is supposed to be a tropical flavor, to me the predominant taste was just ... sweet. I don't know if each fruit snack piece has a distinct flavor - I mean - who eats just one piece of a fruit snack? I dumped them all in my mouth and enjoyed. And each piece is shaped like fruit, pineapple, grape and some other stuff I couldn't really make out.

Coupons.com

Each 25.5 gram pouch provides 80 calories, 11 grams of sugars and 1 gram of protein. There is also 100% of the daily value of vitamin C and 25% of vitamin A and E. Welch's Blueberry Fruit 'n Yogurt Snacks have 7 grams more sugars and provides 20 more calories.

I bought a box with 10 pouches of Welch's Island Fruits Fruit Snacks for $2.50. The pouch contents are probably enough of a snack for small kids, but not for an adult. I would much rather eat a real fruit, but if it's a fruit snack I'm after, then I would choose Sunkist Fruit Gummies Review over this.

Fruitzio Freeze Dried Fruit Snacks (Peaches) Review

Fruitzio Freeze Dried Fruit Snacks (Peaches)

Fruitzio (made by Crispy Green) is a line of freeze-dried fruit snacks made from only the fruit and a "hint" of natural sugar. I received samples of Fruitzio Freeze Dried Peaches to try out and review.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 10 grams
Calories: 40
Total Fat: 0%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: 0%
Carbohydrates: 9 grams
Fiber: 1 gram, 3%
Sugar: 7 grams
Protein: 0 grams

When eating by itself as a stand-alone snack, the flavor is mild at first until it gets a little moist in your mouth, and then the sweetness and peach flavor comes through. I also broke up a few of the bigger pieces and added it to my cereal one morning (at the moment it's Kashi Heart to Heart Warm Cinnamon Oat Cereal). They added such a delightful explosion of peach flavor everytime I had a bite of cereal. Yum .

There are about 2.5 servings in a bag of Fruitzio Freeze-Dried Peaches, and each 10 gram serving provides just 40 calories from 7 grams of sugars and 1 gram of fiber (no protein or fat).

Coupons.com

The ingredients are freeze-dried peaches and cane sugar. Fruitzio Freeze-Dried Peaches are vegan plus gluten-, peanut/tree nut and dairy- free. These can be purchased online at Fruitzio for $3.49 each (25 gram bag) or $42 for a case with 12 - a little pricey but a little goes a long way, so you do get value for your money. I will definitely be buying this in the future.

Fruitzio Freeze Dried Fruit Snacks (Kiwi) Review

Fruitzio Freeze Dried Fruit Snacks (Kiwi)

Fruitzio is a line of freeze-dried fruit snacks (made by Crispy Green). They are made with only the "finest fruit" and freeze dried with just a hint of natural sugar. I received samples of the Kiwi variety to try and let me tell you, this is was yummy - BUT be prepared for a very TART/ SOUR favor.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 10 grams
Calories: 40
Total Fat: 0%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: 0%
Carbohydrates: 8 grams
Fiber: 1 gram, 3%
Sugar: 3 grams
Protein: 0 grams

I didn't think freeze-dried kiwis would be so tart, but they are. I made that scrunched up "this is SOUR face" as I ate a piece ... and then reached for more. If you don't like extremely sour sometimes, you're not going to like this - but since I do, I had no problems having 1 serving - and just 1. The sourness acts like built in portion-control since all I could handle in 1 sitting was just a few pieces.

There are about 2.5 servings in a bag of Fruitzio Freeze-Dried Kiwi Fruit Snacks, and each 10 gram serving provides just 40 calories from 3 grams of sugars and 1 gram of fiber (no protein or fat).

Coupons.com

The ingredients are freeze-dried kiwi and cane sugar. These can be purchased online at Fruitzio for $3.49 each (25 gram bag) or $42 for a case with 12. This is a very unique flavor - I had mine as a stand-alone snack, but you could use Fruitzio Kiwi to jazz up plain yogurt, to cereal and to really make a salad kick! It's a little on the pricey side, but I know I'll be buying this in the future.

Weight Watchers Week 1 Weigh In and my Take on the "Free" Fruit

Week 1 on the new Weight Watchers PointsPlus is a success! I’m down 3.6 lbs! I feel fantastic and I’ve been doing great but I haven’t yet found my groove with the plan. Let me explain while answering the questions Dana left of my recent Do You Nibble post…

So I’m still curious if you like the new WW plan? Or is it hard to compare since you are have extra points right now?  Any thoughts on counting points for fruit when it’s in a recipe?

Well it’s hard for me to evaluate the plan after 1 week but I’ll give you my initial reaction. I am finding calculating points a bit cumbersome. Mostly because I still have the old points stuck in my brain. As for the nursing points, I don’t think of them much. I had nursing points when I started Weight Watchers 6 years ago so it’s a place I’m very familiar with.

It’s actually my own food journal that’s stumping me right now. I haven’t figured out the best way to record it for me yet. I used to use twitter I found it hard this week to keep up with it. Honestly, I may just go back to pen and paper. With the baby and my crazy schedule my computer time has been inconsistent.

As for the fruit and points, I do have my own strategy now. Even on the old plan I used to count all fruit as 1 point, regardless of serving size. This gave me the perfect balance between being accountable and not obsessing over how much fruit I was eating. I just don’t think we need to be weighing out a serving of grapes. That being said, on the new plan my strategy is this..

All fruit eaten solo will be counted as 0 pointsplusThis just makes sense on the new plan. If I notice it affecting my weight loss I may start counting them as a point. Fruits used in smoothies will be counted based on Nutritional InformationThis morning I made an amazing green smoothie with a banana, pear, frozen mango, and spinach (click here for the green smoothie concept) Yes, I used all 0 pointsplus fruit to make the smoothie but using the nutritional information it turned out to be 7 pointsplus. SEVEN! That needs to be counted in my opinion. Fruits used in traditional recipes will be counted based on Nutritional InformationBy "traditional" I mean cooked or mixed in. Like blueberries in blueberry muffins or mango in a stir fry. I have always counted 0 point vegetables in these types of recipes when calculating old points, why wouldn’t I do the same with fruits on the new plan?Fruits not mixed in recipes or meals but added on top will be counted as 0 pointsplusThink blueberries on top of cereal or meals like my Citrus Spinach Salad with Pomegranates and Walnuts. In these recipes the fruit isn’t modified in anyway. It’s not cooked or blended. Theoretically I could be eating it on the side of the meal.

Of course, my opinion may change as I continue on plan but this is my current strategy. I’d love your take!

Ok, that’s all I have in my tonight. The getting up every 2 hours thing is REALLY starting to take it’s toll. I need sleep. I hope to get into a better routine so I can share my food journals but right now it’s too labor intensive for this tired momma.

Oh! I did take a minute to updated my weight progress page and my goals page.

Gotta run.. I’m falling asleep… bye.

Borba Replenishing Skin Balance Water (Lychee Fruit Flavor)

Borba Replenishing Skin Balance Water (Lychee Fruit Flavor) Borba says it's Replenishing Skin Balance Water is, "made with botanical ingredients designed to boost moisture across your entire body. It's a zero carb, zero-calorie, skin care formula that helps you experience healthy-looking, hydrated skin."

I decided to try Borba when I randomly found it in a local convenience store. Sure, it was $3.99, but I had had a long night and was especially swayed by the "Replenishing" promise.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 8 ounces
Calories: 0
Total Fat: 0%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: 0%
Carbohydrates: 0 grams
Fiber: 0%
Sugar: 0 grams
Protein: 0 grams

The flavor was wonderfully subtle, not to sweet, and it tasted quite like lychee, which I love. It was super refreshing, too, and I drank it all quickly. This stuff has no aspartame, so no artificial flavor, and no sodium as well, so no bloat. The "Lychee water" is designed to combat dryness, sensitivity, and roughness. It's got antioxidants, B vitamins, and papaya and guava. Yum!

sponsor
Workout Music Playlists at IntheGym.net

Each 8-ounce serving of Borba Replenishing Skin Balance Water (Lychee Fruit Flavor) - half of a bottle - provides no calories, fat, carbohydrates or protein. There are daily values of 25% for vitamin A, 360% for vitamin C, 330% for vitamin E, 40% for B3, 125% for B6, 260% for B12, 90% for pantothenic acid, 2% for magnesium, and 6% for zinc ... sounds like a true vitamin water.

I thought this was a really interesting concept. Of course, I don't know if this will help with healthy looking skin, but it sure will help with hydration. Naturally, I couldn't afford to drink this everyday at the $3.99 price tag, but if I see this for a lower price, I would definitely buy it again. Have you tried this or any other "beauty beverages"?

Breyers YoCrunch Fruit Parfait Coupons

breyersyocrunchparfait.jpg

I recently reviewed Breyers YoCrunch Blueberry Fruit Parfait. Since it was a big hit with the family (who aren't big yogurt fans), I planned to go get a few more containers, so I was pretty happy to find a coupon online.

$1.00 off when you buy any (1) YoCrunch Fruit Parfait pack by visiting the YoCrunch website.

One thing we do is make our own "apple and carrot dippers" with the yogurt - any chance to get extra fruit & veggies in - and the extra crunch from the granola in the Breyers YoCrunch Fruit Parfait makes this extra tasty - so the kids say.

Tasting! Simply Fruit Roll Ups

Men who wear blue panties really know their stuff.

The “Simply” line of edibles is spreading like a HAZMAT olive oil spill. So now I vote for it to go beyond those buttermilk biscuits and these Simply Fruit Roll-Ups to spread into other areas of my life. Like, Simply Gettin’ Big Money. And Simply Sleepin’ in Late.

Won’t they package that, please?

I’m damn near incapacitated from Greedy Baby biting my finger (complete with bloodshed). And I’m gonna sue. So I’ll be basic and only partially frivolous so I can get back to Tweeting my lawyer.

Simply Fruit Roll Ups are a refreshing breed of all things Rolled. That artificial bright red look is gone (it’s much darker) with its “more than 90% fruit juice and real fruit”. It’s strawberry-ish. It’s appley. But NOT as stretchy-rubbery as the original.

Go on and test drive it with your Foot Trap for a burst of fruitiness without the BS ingredients. I was glad when I found ‘em, because Greedy Kid #3 keeps b!tching for more variety in his lunchbox. I wish somebody would pack ME a damn lunch.

REACTIONS FROM THE TASTE TEST CREW

Health-hater Husband: Not too bad. It’s not bright red like the other kind.

Greedy Kid #1: I’d rather have the artificial kind I grew up on.

Greedy Kid #2: I can’t tell the difference.

Greedy Kid #3: It’s so good, I can’t stop eating it.

Yum UP! to: Settling lawsuits out of court. Greedy Baby better do the right thing.

Yuck Down to: Children who gnaw on their parents. I’m might lose an arm one day.

Breyers YoCrunch Blueberry Fruit Parfait

Breyers YoCrunch Blueberry Fruit Parfait

I was drawn to this Breyers YoCrunch Blueberry Fruit Parfait on the supermarket shelf because of the eye catching packaging design. I like how you can see the yogurt and fruity stuff on the bottom.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 6 ounces
Calories: 170
Total Fat: 1.5 grams, 2%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: 80 mg, 3%
Carbohydrates: 35 grams
Fiber: 2 grams, 8%
Sugars: 24 grams
Protein: 5 grams

Breyers describes this as, "layers of delightful enjoyment. Real fruit pieces tucked under a blanket of creamy vanilla yogurt, plus yummy granola you mix in for the ideal crunch." This really amped up my anticipation and when I finally dug in, after mixing the blueberry puree with the rest of the yogurt, I was quite pleased with the taste. The yogurt was refreshing, but surprisingly not as sweet as I thought it would be. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but if you're used to sweet yogurts, be warned!

The fruit was a nice puree was touch, but it honestly didn't add anything in terms of flavor to the yogurt, but it did add textural interest when I got a piece of blueberry and granola together with the yogurt. The granola itself tastes very much like oats to me - too much so.
