A Sensational Secret Agent Sunday

This morning started bright and early with a Tough Mudder session. Normally it’s Saturday mornings but yesterday I ran the Sole of the City 10k so moved a few things around.

We met at 6:30 this morning and it was great! I’ll post a little more about it tomorrow. I recorded 1 fun video and snapped this photo in the car before heading home.

oh and yup. I joined Instagram. FINALLY now that it’s on the Droid. To be honest, I’m still trying to figure it all out. I’m more of a web girl than a phone girl and it’s more app based than I’m used to.

When I got home Ryan greeted me at the door all excited. He said I needed to see his "messy room." I told him we would be cleaning today and his room was a total disaster.

I could tell by the way he was acting that he already did it and I was so proud of him. Here it was barely 8AM and he woke up, cleaned his room and got dressed all while The Husband and Little Bean slept.

We had breakfast. I know it’s weird but I had leftovers.

Nothing else sounded good and I was out of eggs. :(

We had a good morning. Little Bean wasn’t feeling 100% so we just chilled a little.

Then it was down to business. The boys organized clothes….

while I cleaned the bathrooms.

After cleaning the upstairs and starting the laundry it was lunch time.

The Husband and Little Bean were both napping so it was just us. I had a leftover Salmon burger and Little Guy had leftover chinese food.

In the afternoon Little Guy and I had a Special Agent Birthday party to attend. We left the 2 sleepy heads at home watching soccer.

Our instructions said to arrive in disguise.

That is Cheetah Boy. We made the mask a few weeks ago and he’s been wearing it almost daily.

Once we arrived additional disguises were supplied.

There was Secret Agent Training,

code decoding,

and many other agent duties. It was a great party. Perfect for 15 – 7 year olds and so creative. They even had a homemade bomb shaped birthday cake!

I was planning on hitting the grocery store on the way home but honestly, I just didn’t have it in me. I’ll go sometime during with week. It was raining and cold and I was TIRED.

Instead we came home and planned our Sunday Picnic. I made a fun pizza in honor of Cheetah Boy…

The Boys played in the living room they just cleaned.

Little Bean finally decided to join us.

He slept most of the day but boy did he need it. I think his molars are really coming in. His drool’s been like a faucet, he was running a slight temp, and he was uncharacteristically GRUMPY!

This week our Sunday movie was The Lost World: Jurassic Park. We watched. We folded.

We played.

We annoyed the cat.

It was a great day. :)

The secret to my success.

I may be a misfit & oddly comfortable in my own swiftly-wrinkling skin, yet even I paused before I hit PUBLISH on a post bearing today’s title.

Success is such an odd, debatable word.

One woman’s definition (money, fancy homes, nice cars, unlimited access to high quality beef jerky) may look entirely unlike another’s (lots of free time to pursue passions, enough work to pay for food & shelter, a loving partner and children).

There are, Id imagine, as many different definitions are there are people reading this post.

Additionally, if youre anything like I am, your definition is a fluid one.

My current definition of success is simple: the achievement of something planned and attempted.

The key, for me, is in the attempt.

A success which “fell in my lap” (Let’s say BRAVO TV called & asked me to star with Jackie Warner in a TV show) would be hollow because it’s the planning, working, and succeeding which makes achievement satisfying to me.

No matter what the achievement.

This weekend I received a flurry of emails from fellow bloggers who were feeling unsure of themselves.  They asked me for tips on succeeding as a full time writerblogger.

To their chagrin effusive delight I tossed the question back to them.

I asked their definition of success and to list (for me or just themselves) all the times they’ve succeeded in the past.*

I offered specific tips, but more important, in my experience, is believing you are successful and will continue to be a success.

Believe me, I’ve struggled with this.

I struggled less when life was less hectic (pre-marriage, pre-child, pre-pre-pre), but even then I wrestled with “knowing I could do it.”

My solution was the creation of a success box.

The idea started when I was dating Ren Man.  Whenever he’d compliment me (“I loved the article you wrote for Good Life Magazine!”) I’d joke I was “putting it in my pocket” and saving the words to reread later.

Then life grew a bit more hectic.  We married. We moved. I opened my training studio.

I realized it wasnt enough to pretend to hold on to compliments—I needed reminders of past successes for moments when I was feeling none too successful.

I began saving everything on my smart-phone.

Kind words emailed from a client? Save.

Complimentary letters on a magazine article I’d written? SAVED.

Texts or voicemails from friends or family simply to tell me I ROCKED? Save Save Save.

The best predictor of future success is past success.

If I ever felt uncertain as I faced an assignment or life-challenge all I had to do to ‘predict my success’ was return to my electronically-stored items.

Then life grew more hectic. We moved again. Our two became THREE (five when you count the canines).

I realized smart-phone saving was no longer enough.

Not only could I potentially lose the information—I craved something tangible.

I longed for successes I could sit with and *touch* as I reminded myself “Ive been successful before. I know how to do this. I *can* do it again.”

I printed & printed & cut & trimmed.

I created the success box pictured at the top of this post and I visit it regularly.  Sometimes to add to its contents.  Frequently to remind myself, on those days when nothing seems to be “succeeding” (from parenting to freelancing) , I’ve succeeded before and I will again.

The best predictor of future success for me is reflecting and remembering Ive succeeded before.

How do you encourage yourself when doubt starts to creep in? Do you have a success box, journal or other “reminder” you revisit?

Do you savesavesave on the smart phone as I used to?

Are you grateful I did not, as initially planned, close todays comments and command you to git to Success Box creating PRONTO?

*to my shock & delight everyone played along with my mishegas, list-generated & I hope made Success Boxes as promised.

My Retro Fitness Secret… (guest post)

My name is Retro Mimi, and if you read my blog, 1972: The Retro WW Experiment – you know that I like to write about my adventures in retro dieting. Sometimes the food can be a little scary, but it is ALWAYS fun.

So when the wonderful and generous Carla asked for a guest post, I thought it would be interesting to explore the concept of retro fitness & exercise. I looked at it as a mini-challenge since this is something I have not yet explored on my blog.

As I began pouring through my vast collection of cookbooks and magazines about dieting in the 1970's and looking for retro fitness inspiration – I had a huge realization. There is nothing. Nada. Zilch. No real mention of exercise anywhere! Well, unless you count the creepy ads in the back of the magazines that urge you to send $2.99 and a self addressed stamped envelope for your very own “chin gym” to help you eliminate that double chin! Apparently, exercise was not necessarily encouraged as part of a regular weight loss plan for women in the 70's! Wow. Weird.

This got me thinking. When did exercise start to catch on? When did we really start to embrace it? Then it hit me.

Leg warmers. Leotards. Headbands. The 80's.

I was a child of the 70's and 80's – and lived in a household of chronic dieters. So you can imagine the litany of fitness fads we voraciously attacked. Just to name a few of the things you might have found in our house at any given time when I was growing up:

Dr. Scholl’s Exercise Sandals (pink, of course)Sauna SuitsThighMasterJane Fonda Workout VideoNordic TrackAbdominal WheelsElaine Powers Figure Salon Membership CardPumping Iron: The Book

As a kid, I was lucky enough to have parents who taught me that fitness should be fun. One of my fondest childhood memories is sitting on the living room floor with my mom each day waiting for The Richard Simmons Show to start, so we could do our leg lifts together. We jogged, we swam, we roller skated and we were one of the first families to sign up at the new racquetball club when it opened. I proudly wore my shiny red satin gym shorts and matching tube socks through it all.

To this day, I guess you could say I am pretty “retro” when it comes to my fitness routine. The most hi-tech piece of equipment I own is a pedometer, and I much prefer a nature hike over a trip to the gym. A good old fashioned exercise video every morning really does the trick for me, so please don’t laugh when I tell you I still own “Buns of Steel” – parts 1 and 2.

For me, fitness is not about gadgets and glamorous gyms. It’s about getting off the couch, having fun and shaking my booty–whenever and however I can. But that’s just me. I’m old school.

So this post leaves me wondering. What about the rest of the MizFit world? I know I’m not the only one with leg warmers and a ThighMaster stashed away in the closet!

What’s your Retro Fitness Secret?

Protein: secret weapon for <b>weight loss</b>? | <b>Weight Loss</b> Hypnosis Formula

The Zone. Atkins. Protein Power. these are just a few of the high-protein diets that have come to public attention in recent years and with trim celebrity followers such as Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Alba, it is not hard to think that they are on to something.

But will eating more protein really help you lose weight?

Leederville-based dietitian Anderson Jones said numerous recent studies reported higher protein intakes being linked to greater weight loss.

“These are not conclusive however, with other studies showing that high-carbohydrate and vegetarian diets can have the same result,” he said.

Mr Jones said it was important to note that the vast majority of these weight-loss studies followed only subjects for a number of weeks or months.

“It is well recognised that weight regain from around six months is extremely common and can result in people putting back all the weight they lost,” he said.

He said a big study by scientists from Harvard and Louisiana State universities followed subjects for two years after a weight-loss diet.

“They investigated different combinations of protein, fat and carbohydrate and concluded that there was no difference between the diets,” he said.

Mr Jones said any diet that lowered energy intake would achieve weight loss, but healthy weight loss was a case of making sustainable dietary changes and getting adequate support from a dietitian.

“A higher-protein diet can achieve long-term weight loss, so long as it meets these requirements,” he said.

Mr Jones said protein had a greater effect on satiety than carbohydrate or fat, meaning eating protein helped create a feeling of fullness easily.

Diet Biz nutritionist and sports dietician Boris Kazakov said while some studies concluded that high-protein diets could promote a feeling of fullness, it did not guarantee that increasing your protein intake would help you lose weight.

“To date there is no secret weapon for weight loss,” he said.

“For effective long-term weight loss you need to make small, achievable changes to your lifestyle.”

The Nutrition Specialists dietitian and Dietitians Association of Australia spokeswoman Margaret Hays said as a general guide the average adult needed one gram of protein per kilogram of body weight, with protein needs increasing during times of cell growth and repair such as during childhood and adolescence, pregnancy and lactation, and after illness or surgery.

HEALTHY PROTEIN SOURCES: • 2 small eggs = 10g • 1 cup of low-fat milk = 10g• 120g of lean red meat = 32g• 1/2 cooked skinless chicken breast = 22g• 30g of reduced-fat cheddar cheese = 10g• 100g can of tuna = 28g • 4 slices of wholegrain bread = 10g• 1 cup of cooked rice = 4g• 1 large can of baked beans = 10g• 30g of almonds = 6gDiet Biz nutritionist and sports dietitian Boris Kazakov.

Secret Hidden Thoughts: When Life Revolves Around Food

Warning! McDonald’s food props are for demonstration purposes only.

Sometimes, it’s not until you are truly free that you can see with eyes wide open the bondage you were in.

Practically every hour of every day (no exaggeration), I used to think about food: What I would eat. When I would eat it. Where I would get it, blah, blah, blah. It’s not that I was eating every single hour, but I had food on the brain 24/7. For planning purposes, ya know?

Take a look into some of my (former) secret thoughts:

“I wonder what kind of cake it will be?”“I hope there’s lots of food so I can have extra.”“I can’t make it through the afternoon without a sweet snack.”“I’m still hungry.”“I’m going to hide this so no one eats it.”“I refuse to do anything else until I eat right NOW!”“There’s nothing wrong with 5 slices of pizza. I deserve it.”“I’m going to eat before I get there – just in case their food is nasty.”“No way I’m not sharing this. I’ll eat it after everyone goes to bed.”

Ohhh my! Today I realized that I don’t think like this anymore. Sure, I still enjoy food immensely – it still holds entertainment and indulgence value, yet food does NOT rule my thoughts.

But how did that change?

I stopped viewing food as a means to simply tickle my taste buds and, instead, started valuing it as my fueling source, and my means to strength, energy and nourishment. I slowly began to change the kinds of foods I ate until the wildebeest cravings ceased and particular foods just didn’t taste good to me anymore.

Now don’t get me wrong. I still love a good burger or a big azz slice of cake (please feed that to me?), but I’m in control now, and my day is not saturated with thoughts of food. So instead, I’m finally living my life – not thinking voraciously about my next meal.

How have your own thoughts toward food changed over time?

Forward Cheating Spouse’s Incoming SMS Messages with Secret SMS ReplicatorPosted by: Scott WebsterOctober 27, 2010This is one of those app announcements sure to get people talking. DLP Mobile has launched a controversial new application, Secret SMS Replicator, into the Android Market aimed specifically at users who want to secretly and remotely monitor the incoming SMS messages on another handset. Stepping out on your girlfriend or wife? You might want to lock your phone up lest she learns of Secret SMS Replicator.

Once the application is installed on your target's phone, it runs in the background and completely hides itself. At that point forward, it secretly forwards each incoming incoming SMS messages to the number(s) you choose. There is no icon, no shortcut, and no settings panel. The only way to get into the app is to text the target phone a pre-determined code word.

Secret SMS Replicator is $4.99 to purchase and can be found immediately in the Android Market.

So what happens if you set up two phones to forward to each other?

How about just getting a divorce?

Reply ›PeteOctober 28, 2010

Agreed! Trust is the most important thing to a great relationship. If you don't trust your partner, end the relationship. Also, I don't think an app like this should even be legal, since it is hidden and with no access from the person whose phone it is installed on.

Reply ›MichaelOctober 28, 2010

This is how I caught my wife cheating. Not this app...but I read her text messages while she was asleep.

Trust, but verify.

Reply ›AdamOctober 27, 2010

Ummm...if it's installed through the market can it not be UNINSTALLED through the market?

Reply ›shockedOctober 27, 2010

Im pretty sure this is legal , and im a bit concerned that the app doesnt even have to be down loaded to the phone your spying on directly .WTF is that ....... I would suggest we look into the legal ramifications of this app, im sure this infringes on your right to privacy in somewhere shape or from...... This is what happens when technology get out of hand ..I can see a polition or celebrity filing suit because of this .

Reply ›ontheFritzOctober 27, 2010

it DOES need to be installed on the "target's" phone.

Reply ›ChrisOctober 27, 2010

The best part of this app is its $4.99, so when your "Cheating Spouse" looks at their Google account or cell phone bill there will be a charge for "Secret SMS Replicator." Then you will be looking like a dumb ass when they bring the bill to you and demand an explanation.

Reply ›RyanOctober 27, 2010

Not to mention, their phone buzzes every time you get a text message. I'd be willing to bet that this "exposes" more suspicious assholes than it does cheaters.

Reply ›Kilgore TroutOctober 27, 2010

Adam, agreed. Seems to me that it's probably visible in running apps. Of course, most people won't look there.

Who wants to download this and see how easy it is to detect?

Anyone readying themselves for a nightly of CM and want to purchase, look for signs of it then unpurchase and reinstall android (just to make sure it's not running in the background somewhere)?

Reply ›Golem! Golem!October 27, 2010
