Dr. McDougall's All Natural Lentil Soup Review

Dr. McDougall's All Natural Lentil Soup

Dr. McDougall's All Natural Lentil Soup is an all natural, vegan and gluten free soup that blends savory lentils with brown rice and vegetables in a perfectly seasoned broth. According to the description on the Right Foods website, "it is a delicious, hearty soup that provides complete protein essential amino acids."

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 cup (245 grams)
Calories: 150
Total Fat: 0.5 grams, 1%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: 480 mg, 20%
Carbohydrates: 27 grams
Fiber: 10 grams, 40%
Sugars: 2 grams
Protein: 9 grams

The first thing I did was check out the nutrition facts, which turned out to be very impressive. Each 1 cup serving of Dr. McDougall's All Natural Lentil Soup provides 150 calories, 0.5 grams of total fat, 480 mg sodium (20% of the daily value), 10 grams of fiber (40% of the DV), 2 grams of sugars and 9 grams of protein. Did you catch that - 40% of your daily value for fiber and 9 grams of protein - if you had eaten Fiber One Honey Squares Cereal (Review) for breakfast, you would already have 80% of your daily fiber requirement before dinner!

Of course, another important factor is the taste, and while this lentil soup was hearty, it was also a little bland. There's a LOT of lentils, so you definitely get your money's worth there, but it's not as flavorful as Dr. McDougall's Organic Tortilla Style All Natural Soup (Review) - adding a little hot sauce seemed to perk it up a bit though.

The ingredients in Dr. McDougall's All Natural Lentil Soup are filtered water, lentils, vegetables (onions, carrots, celery, tomatoes, garlic), organic brown rice, organic wine, natural flavor (non animal source), yeast extract potato starch, spices sea salt.

I received samples for review, but it's available on the Right Foods website for purchase at $17.94 for a case of 6 (18 ounce (510 gram) cartons). While I loved the nutrition of Dr. McDougall's All Natural Lentil Soup, the flavor was lacking - although I preferred it to Amy's Organic Lentil Soup (Review). I look forward to trying more Dr. McDougall's All Natural Soups - and finding others that are as good as the Organic Tortilla Style Soup.

Dr. McDougall's Garden Vegetable Low Sodium Soup Review

Dr. McDougall's Garden Vegetable Low Sodium Soup

Dr. McDougall's Organic Tortilla Style All Natural Soup rocked my word hard last week when I tried it for the first time. Since then, I've set out to try and review as many of the varieties as I can, including the low sodium ones like the Dr. McDougall's Garden Vegetable Low Sodium Soup.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 cup (245 grams)
Calories: 60
Total Fat: 0%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: 290 mg, 12%
Carbohydrates: 12 grams
Fiber: 2 grams, 8%
Sugars: 3 grams
Protein: 3 grams

I've accepted that I might not find anymore as good as the tortilla soup, but this vegetarian friendly low sodium Garden Veggie soup was pretty good too. There's quite a vegetable medley going on in this soup - I spotted tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, celery, peas and green beans, all in plentiful amounts. The broth is soupy with a light tomato flavor and surprisingly, I didn't miss the salt - I didn't need to add any (something I did to the tortilla soup which has twice as much sodium).

Best of all - each 1 cup serving of Dr. McDougall's Garden Vegetable Low Sodium Soup provides only 6o calories, no fat, 290 mg sodium (12% of the daily value), 2 grams of fiber (8% of the DV), 2 grams of sugars and 3 grams of proteins. There is also 40% of the DV for vitamin C, 22% of the DV for calcium and iron, plus 26% of the DV for vitamin A.

This is something I will definitely be buying in the future - low calorie, all natural ingredients list and tasty too.

Dr. McDougall's Organic Tortilla Style All Natural Soup Review

Dr. McDougalls Organic Tortilla Style All Natural Soup

Dr. McDougall's Organic All Natural Soups hit the supermarket shelves recently, and I received a few samples for review. The first one I picked to try was the Organic Tortilla Style Soup, described as, made from a prized recipe that blends organic masa harina, corn, black beans and vegetables in a delicious Southwestern broth. The soup is also vegan and gluten free.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 cup (245 grams)
Calories: 100
Total Fat: 0.5 grams, 1%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: 530 mg, 22%
Carbohydrates: 20 grams
Fiber: 4 grams, 16%
Sugars: 2 grams
Protein: 5 grams

The directions on the carton read, just heat and serve, so I poured out about half the contents in a bowl, and microwaved it for a few minutes. The result was a delicious hearty soup. It was a little on the sweet side - I was actually expecting a more salty flavor - but it wasn't an unpleasant surprise. There was a lot of beans and corns in the slightly thick broth of this robust soup. After a few spoonfuls, I also started getting some of that spicy heat on the back of my tongue from the chilies - nothing too strong though. Love this soup - although I have to admit to adding just a pinch of salt to my 2nd portion - and then the soup really was perfect in my eyes.

Each 1 cup serving of Dr. McDougall's Organic Tortilla Style All Natural Soup provides 100 calories, 0.5 grams of total fat, 530 mg sodium (22% of the daily value), 4 grams of fiber (16% of the DV), 2 grams of sugars and 5 grams of protein. The sodium content is actually that of most "low sodium" soups. The ingredients are, filtered water, organic vegetables (tomatoes, corn, onions, chilies, garlic, cilantro), organic black beans, organic masa harina, natural flavors, organic starches (corn, potato), sea salt, organic spices, organic evaporated cane juice, organic sesame, organic tamari soy sauce, citric acid.

As I mentioned before, I received samples for review, so I'm not sure of the exact retail price (on their website, other comparable options cost just under $3.00 per 18 ounce (510 gram) carton - about 2 servings). As much as I like Muir Glen Organic Chicken Tortilla Soup (Review), I think I give Dr. McDougall's Organic Tortilla Style All Natural Soup the edge because it's lower in calories and has way less sodium - 22% compared to 33% of the daily value.
