KLOUT & the power of a tiny tribe.

Ahhh Klout.  Here’s where, were I not a misfit, you might find some sort of disclaimer proffered about varying circumstances etc. Ive got none such disclaimer.  I do think KLOUT rocks as no other metric illuminates the power of a TINY TRIBE.

To be a blogger is to be continually asked to prove your worth.

Each time we pitch/are approached by a brand (a post for a different day. if life is like dating—which I contend it is—I never ‘get’ why brands ask US out & then demand our numbers.  It begs a response of: But wait. You wanted to date *me* I didnt as you out!).w

We’re repeatedly asked about blog analytics.

How many visitors we receive daily.

How many uniques we receive daily.

How many page views we receive monthly.

How many how many how many.

My first indication a brand partnership is not for me is when they seek these specific numbers upon first encounter.

644120 10151397588749466 153067425 n1 300x300 KLOUT & the power of a tiny tribe. lemmie check. nope. not a fit.

Sure analytics are important (a semblance of them are publicly available places like compete.com) yet they only tell a fraction of the story.

There’s power in a tiny tribe.

Pause for a moment and consider to whom you look for recommendations or advice.

If you’re anything like I am it’s someone who has consistently offered solid information, who’s earned your trust, and whom you see as remarkably similar to you.

There’s power in a tiny tribe.

Klout, for this blogger, is precisely like fitness.

There are no shortcuts.

There are no quick tricks.

The only way to get there (if by “there” you mean living a longer, healthier life which I do) is consistency.

There’s power in a tiny tribe.

The same is true with Klout score.

My strong score is indicative of absolutely nothing (where are those hotel upgrades we were promised?!) and of absolutely everything (engagement. continually. unseen in pageview numbers.)

It’s an indicator of consistency across myriad social media platforms in life.

It’s an indicator of the fact I do a little bit, each day, on a regular basis—precisely like fitness.

And for my misfit brand—that’s everything.

Be you blogger or brand—whats your take on the hotly debated topic which is Klout?

Beastmode Power Juice

It goes down real smooth ‘n such: 2 apples, 2 celery stalks, 2 handfuls spinach, 3 large kale leaves, 2 handfuls baby carrots, and 3 sprigs parsley. Don’t be afraid of the Beastmode Power Juice, my peoples.

greens Beastmode Power Juice

Yet this is only but one rendition of my Beastmode Power Juice. Other concoctions I’ve indulged in are:

apple, spinach, cucumberapple, spinach kale, ginger, celery, cilantroapple, carrot, pineapple

There are so many possibilities and I’m just getting started. I’ve been juicing for over 3 weeks now. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve made for my fitness in forever. It’s quite accidental that I’ve had no milk, minimal meats & cheese, and very little carbs in these past weeks. I didn’t do that on purpose. My cravings for those kinds of foods has decreased while my stomach’s desire for varying renditions of the Beastmode Juice has increased.

On average, I’m spending about $30 for a small hoard of fruits & veggies (primarily veggies) that provides me with about 4 days of juicing. That breaks down to about $7.50 per day.  Ya, it’s pricey. I know it. But the benefits are worth it.

The gremlin-kids have been helping me juice the veggies. They really get into it and have even been open to taste-testing the green-ish of concoctions. As for the husband? After I begged him 6 times (not kidding) to watch Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead, he finally did. It made such an impact on him that he stopped teasing me about my juicing and is now considering a 10-day juice fast. WHAT!?

ENLIGHTEN YOURSELF WITH THESE FREE JUICING RESOURCES

Fat Sick & Nearly Dead on Youtube: Watch it for free on free. The entire 90-minute movie is available for viewing. It will impact you for the better. I promise.Best selling juicers & reviews: I’m using a hand-me-down Jack LaLanne juicer right now. It works fine. But still going back & forth between purchasing a new Breville or Omega juicer. Decisions, decisions…A-Z Produce Prep: How to prep your fruits & veggies for juicing.

az prep Beastmode Power Juice

Juicing the Rainbow: This is a daily online “newspaper” that brings together articles, Youtube vids, photos, stories, etc related to juicing from around the web. You can also subscribe for free to have it delivered to your Inbox. I did that because I don’t wanna miss anything. Juicing the Rainbow always has nuggets of good info and great tips for a healthy dose of juicing inspiration.

It also does me well to simply Google the particular veggie I’m juicing to learn more about it, such as using the keywords: “spinach juicing benefits”. That type of search brings up a plethora of good info.

If you’re not sold on the idea of juicing fruit & veggies, perhaps an alternative juicing of ingredients will tickle your fancy? Here’s the recipe:

2 road-killed raccoon claws (rancid, never fresh)3 slabs muddied elephant skins1 partially-deceased blobfishthe amphibious scales from 10,000 male-Mermaids (do not substitute with female scales)

This juiced-specialty will have you feelin’ like you just got baptized in the waters of the Fountain of Youth.

[Unrelated nonsense content: Merman Found On Beach]

If your juicer’s motor burns out while preparing the above recipe, then it’s probably your own fault. Now goodbye.

The power of MONOtasking.

I dont wanna distract my brain during this... I dont wanna distract my brain during this…

We’ve established Im a misfit.

If theres a normal order to something—chances are I’ll do it backwards.  My life just unravels unfolds that way.

As a result, I was the Queen of Multitasking *before* we made our duo a trio.

I was renown (not in a good way) for my ability to simultaneously talk on the phone, email, plan a client’s workout, do my own workout, & edit an article.

Instead of motherhood turning me into a multi-tasker (the normal, necessary course of things) the Tornado taught me the power of MONOtasking.

When she played—with anything from stickers to silly putty—she focused exclusively on the task at hand.

She wouldnt color while concurrently watching television, eating a snack & debating which toys to bring in the bath.

She was–and is–a MONOtasker.   Whether five minutes or fifty she focuses her attention on one thing at a time until she’s finished.

now when I meditate I ONLY meditate. now when I meditate I ONLY meditate.

I lied to me.

I told myself MONOtasking was GREAT for a child but didnt make sense for adults.

My to-do list was pages long.  It was imperative I tackle multiple tasks at once in order to get everything done.

Or was it?

When I took a long look at my multitasking I realized this:

I was exhausted.  I rushed through my days bouncing from task to task.  I ended my days with nothing fully accomplished and feeling like a failure.

I was a Jane of all tasks and master of none.

I realized the only tasks I completed were those which didnt require much brainpower (not how I wanted to spend my day).I realized I could keep multitasking & the end result would be Id never do anything exceedingly well (from motherhood to mizfit).I realized multitasking for me was a form of distraction. It was a socially encouraged way to not be present.I realized multitasking was not how I wanted to live.hows that hectic life working for ya? hows that hectic life working for ya?

I was overwhelmed by how to change my ways till I realized it was a simple ten word shift:

I must choose to be present in all I do.

I eliminated distractions (shut down internet when I worked etc)I made family/friend-time only that (phone off/on vibrate for emergencies).I forced myself to finish projects before moving on (no matter how tempting “taking a break & returning to it later” still was).I consciously decided to multitask when life offered a perfect opportunity (tweeting/texting while I waited at bus stop or stood in the grocery line etc.).

I found MONOtasking increased my productivity, sparked my creativity, and manifested itself in a far less manic me.

Now you:

Are you with me in MONOtasking & ready to commit to tackling one task at a time?

Stop, put down your snack, close facebook,  twitter & pinterest and hit us all up in the comments below….

Wednesday Weigh In: The Power of Stateless Dieting

The scale surprised me this morning. I’m down a pound since the Wednesday Weigh in before Italy!

I must admit I’m a bit shocked, but when I really sit down and think about it, makes total sense.

Not because I ate more while walking my butt off, although I’m sure that didn’t hurt, but because when I came home I slipped right back into my healthy eating lifestyle.

I firmly believe it’s not the vacation that sabotages you, it’s the mindset that you are no longer “on plan” when you get back because you “ruined” your diet. It’s this feeling of guilt that perpetrates poor choices when you get home. It’s the lack of understanding that diets are stateless. Everything I ate in Italy was on plan in my mind. I didn’t come home with any feelings of regret, guilt, shame or disgust with myself.

That is the power of Stateless Dieting. I wrote about this concept almost 5 years ago (Holy CRAP!) and I still believe it’s one of the big milestones to overcome the diet mentality and break yo-you diet cycles (Click here to read my original post.)

Anyway, your turn. How was your week? How’s the DietBet going? We have 7 days left! I’m not sure I’m going to make my goal (I have 3.9 lbs to go) but I’m having fun trying!

Greedy Recipe: 3PM Workday Power Muffins

Afternoons at work can suck. By 3pm my morning workout endorphins are definitely depleted and I’m just about annoyed with sitting in the dang office chair at this point. So you know how men think about sex almost 20 times per day? Well, on workday by 3pm, I’ve probably thought about muffins and cupcakes and other forms of delectable goodness more than 472 times already.

Don’t worry. They’re just thoughts. I don’t act on these impulses.

So the idea of a “Power Muffin” recently popped into my head. I wanted a muffin that’s tasty, yet works for me with a seriously healthy power boost. This muffin must also whiplash my stomachs into satisfaction so I don’t fall prey to unhealthy crap before dinner.

Wouldn’t you agree that to be powerful?

After turning to Google, it seems the idea of Power Muffins has already been done a gazillion times over in all kinds of different ways. So instead of reinventing the muffin from scratch, I chose Oh She Glows Flax & Oat Breakfast Power Muffin recipe and adapted it with very slight changes to fit my empowerment needs.

Here’s what I did and this is what I call it:

3PM Workday Power Muffins (adapted from Angela Liddon at Oh She Glows)

Ingredients

1 large ripe banana2 tsp olive oil1 eggJust shy of 1/4 cup brown sugar (unpacked)1/2 cup ground flaxseed1/4 cup whole wheat flour(heaping) 1/2 cup oats1/2 tsp baking soda1 small handful crushed walnut pieces

Directions

Preheat over to 350 and place cupcake liners into muffin tin.Mash banana in bowl and then mix in oil, egg and sugar. In separate bowl, mix flaxseed, flour, oats and walnuts. Then combine with wet ingredients and stir until blended.Spoon mixture into muffin tin and bake for 15 minutes (or a few minutes longer if not done yet).

Yields 5-6 muffins. Approximately 200 calories per muffin.

Wohoo! And you see how my muffins turned out in the pic. Delish. Nice and moist with a subtle hint of sweetness. Just perfect. And you gotta read up on the benefits of flaxseed. The knowledge of the flaxseed will send shockwaves into your cranium — high in Omega 3's and protects against cancer to name a few. Do NOT ignore foods that protect against cancer!

Okie dokie. Love you much,

Josie

Baron Baptiste's Hot Yoga: The Power Yoga Method -(Level 2 - The Next Challenge) [VHS]

Baron Baptiste's Hot Yoga: The Power Yoga Method -(Level 2 - The Next Challenge) [VHS]This video misrepresents itself. Although the title is Low Impact Aerobics, it is not low impact. The cardio intervals include jogging, jumping jacks, and other moves with hops. This is a 65-minute reissue of a 1988 video that features Janet Jones-Gretzky, who is so slim that you can count her ribs through her white leotard, leading a class of fit, gorgeous exercisers (female and male). This aerobic interval workout combines fast cardio (no patterns) with more controlled cardio plus weights, though still at a fast pace. We've learned a lot about exercise since 1988, and these two-second reps with weights are not as effective as slower reps. They are also more likely to lead to injury. Although the video is targeted to all levels, unless you're an experienced exerciser, it's too easy to lose correct form when you're doing such fast reps and aerobic moves at the same time. You might find the weight intervals repetitious (tons of lunges and shoulder presses). A floor-work segment uses ankle weights, followed by a stretch. Unless you miss the old Firm workouts, choose one that is more up to date (and therefore safer and more effective). --Joan Price

Power of Fruit (Original All Fruit) Bars Review

Power of Fruit (Original All Fruit) Bars

Ice pops are a must during summer. I know - lots of sugar and not much else, but that's why I'm hooked on Power of Fruit Bars. They sent me samples to try and I was bowled over by Power of Fruit CherryBerry Bars - only 35 calories and 5 grams of sugars. That flavor is just so fruity and delicious, but there are other varieties, so I excitedly tried the Original All Fruit Bars.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 bar (1.75 ounces)
Calories: 28
Total Fat: < 1%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: < 1%
Carbohydrates: 7 grams
Fiber: 1 gram, 4%
Sugars: 5 grams
Protein: < 1 gram

The ingredients in these ice pops are strawberries, cranberries, blueberries, mango chunks, pineapple, bananas, white grape juice concentrate and water. You can certainly tell there is a lot going on flavor-wise - the ice-pops have a little sweetness and the berries are strongly represented both in taste and in texture as you bite into fruitybits very often, but the taste of the banana threw me off a little - I'm not sure I like 'nanas in my ice-pops. I still liked this flavor but not as much as the Power of Fruit CherryBerry Bars.

Coupons.com

Each Power of Fruit Original All Fruit Bar (1.75 ounces), provides 28 calories and 5 grams of sugars. A box with 6 bars retails for $2.99-$3.89 - and worth it. They have coupons available from time to time on the Power of Fruit Facebook page, so stock up when it's possible. This wasn't my favorite flavor, but it was still good and I would buy it in the future.

Sugars: 5 grams
Protein: < 1 gram

I can't even adequately describe how much these ice-pops (or fruit bars - call them what you will), rocked my world. It's tart and tangy and slightly sweet at the same time. But the best thing is that after sucking on these ice-pops, you'll come to bite on a piece of fruit ... a nice hunky chunk. This added texture is just amazing and adds a ton of interest in your mouth. You WILL be going mmm while sucking on this.

But what's even better - yes, it does get better - each 1.75 ounce Power of Fruit CherryBerry Bar provides only 5 grams of sugars and 35 calories, and 1/2 a daily fruit serving.

Power of Fruit CherryBerry Bars

You can find ice-pops for cheaper, but this is totally worth the price. I now I'm going to be stocking up.

The Power of Purple: Cooking With Color

eggplant

With Team Purple in the Final Four (Hannah and Olivia were the first couple to make it together) on The Biggest Loser this week, what better time to address the power of purple food? A favorite around the Ranch, for many reasons, has long been eggplant.

Though they’re found in a myriad of colors and sizes, most of the eggplant we see in the market are deep purple in color and oblong in shape. The purplish skin is indicative of the presence of anthocyanins. These powerful antioxidants can help lower the risk of a number of different cancers as well as support memory function and can also be found in relatively high amounts in açaí, black currants, and raspberries and blueberries. (All that, and did you know "purple" even has its own website?)

But that’s not the only reason to savor eggplant. This versatile veggie is 95% water, which means it doesn’t have an awful lot of calories. For example, a 1 1/4 pound eggplant yields about 5 cups of uncooked eggplant with just over 100 calories.

You won’t want to eat it raw, however -- it can be very bitter. Everything changes when it’s cooked, though. Baked, broiled, grilled, sautéed -- even microwaved; a little cooking yields a tender, almost creamy texture. Some like to salt their eggplant before cooking it, which neutralizes acidic flavors and also draws out water, making the flesh seem meatier.

When shopping for eggplant, look for smooth skin that yields slightly to pressure, but bounces back. Eggplants have a dimple at the blossom end that can be round or oval in shape. An oval dimple is usually shallower, and is often indicative of fewer seeds and a meatier, more desirable eggplant. A round, deeper dimple frequently indicates many seeds inside, especially if the eggplant is large and mature. Fresh eggplants, which yield optimal flavor, should seem heavy for their size. For this reason, it’s best to cook them as soon as possible.

Its neutral flavor profile means that eggplant combines well with other vegetables and seasonings. The following ratatouille recipe from Flavor First is a perfect example.

Smoky Ratatouille with Spicy Sausage
Ratatouille is a classic Provencal dish consisting of slowly simmered eggplant, bell peppers, tomatoes, onions, and fresh herbs. In this rendition, these traditional ingredients are first cooked on the grill to impart a smoky flavor. The addition of spicy sausage completes the flavor profile and makes this dish feel rich and satisfying.

Makes 4 servings

2 (4-ounce) links spicy Italian turkey sausage
3 zucchini (yellow or green), cut lengthwise into 1/2-inch-thick slices
1 medium white or red onion, sliced into 1/2-inch-thick rings
1 eggplant (about 1 1/2 pounds), cut lengthwise into 1/2-inch-thick slices
2 red, yellow, or green bell peppers, roasted, peeled, and cut into 1/2-inch squares
1 (14.5-ounce) cans no-salt-added fire-roasted diced tomatoes (see note)
1 tablespoon grated lemon zest
1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil
1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme
Salt and ground black pepper (optional)
2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf (Italian) parsley, for garnish

Note: You can substitute 1 pound grape or cherry tomatoes (yellow or red) for the fire-roasted tomatoes. Grill fresh tomatoes on skewers, carefully turning, until they are softened and the skins just begin to split.

Remove the sausage meat from the casings. Cook in a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until there is no more pink. Drain well, crumble, and set aside.

Prepare a grill and heat to medium-high heat (when the fire is ready you can hold your hand 5 inches above rack for no longer than 3 to 4 seconds). Insert a toothpick horizontally through each onion slice going through all the rings to the center to hold the slices intact. Lightly coat the onion, zucchini, and eggplant with olive oil cooking spray. Grill the vegetables on the grill rack, turning once, until done, about 4 minutes total. (Onions may take longer.)

When cool enough to handle, cut the grilled vegetables into 1/2-inch dice and transfer to a bowl. Add the roasted pepper, tomatoes, lemon zest, basil, and thyme. Stir in the sausage. Season with salt and black pepper, if desired. Transfer to a serving bowl and garnish with the parsley.
