Happy December!

This Sensational Sunday was jam packed with holiday awesomeness! And it all started with a morning to myself.

I woke up a little before 7 to a quiet house giving me some time to set up my new Fitbit!

20131201_AA

I couldn’t help myself when I saw the Force on Black Friday. So far I love it. It’s a little bigger than I anticipated but the display is great!

Before I knew it, this guy came wandering down to play Connect Four.

20131201_A

Then this guy joined us and we did a few puzzles.

20131201_B

Of course I had to put them to work. It was time to clean up the Thanksgiving mess and prepare for Christmas.

20131201_C

A quick break for breakfast.

20131201_D

That’s leftover Brussels sprouts and egg scramble with a half whole wheat English muffin topped with almond butter and strawberry jelly.

I’m trying to eat more balanced at meal times instead of just “light.” I’m training for my second CrossFit competition and have been working out a lot. To be honest, I’m loving it. Especially the Olympic lifting. This was me on Saturday.

TRYING to get better at the snatch. It’s really challenging for me in a good way.

Anyway, we prepared the living room for decorating.

20131201_E

We went down to get the tree only to discover the disaster zone.

20131201_F

I made the kids clean up before continuing with the decorating. It apparently wiped them out.

20131201_G

Once we got upstairs everyone had a job. :)

20131201_H

It was so fun to decorate with the Christmas music blasting. We found the perfect spot for my new ornaments The Husband gave me last year.

20131201_I

If you don’t know the ornament story, click here.

Lunch break!

20131201_J

I made a huge salad with leftover beets, smoked Cheddar and raspberry vinaigrette. It was delicious!

After nap and lunch I took the boys to Target to pick up a few supplies.

20131201_L

They were driving me CRAZY but we had a good time.

When we got back, Dad had the Lego Winter Village set up!

20131201_M

We had some snacks and I helped the 8-year-old with a fun little project he came up with.

20131201_N

My snack was yogurt with almonds, cocoa nibs, cinnamon and honey.

The project was a cover for his loom rubber band holder.

20131201_O

The Husband called us out to see the lights.

20131201_P

Perfect!
20131201_Q

The boys then cleaned up…

20131201_R

… and worked on some Legos while I prepared dinner.

20131201_S

We had homemade turkey soup, which everyone devoured!

20131201_T

And leftovers of course.

20131201_U

After dinner we cleaned, danced and ran around like maniacs.

20131201_V

After The 2-year-old went to bed, I set up the Fitbit Flex for The 8-year-old.

20131201_W

He’s been fascinated by it ever since I got it so I let him wear it all day and the little bugger beat me by 2,000 steps!

Screen shot 2013-12-01 at 9.38.16 PM

I told him it was because he had shorter legs. ;)

I decided to take a rest day today so no run or workout but just by cleaning, decorating and playing I hit my 10,000-step goal. Not too shabby! (Note: see the spike around 6:30? That was our dance party.)

Once both kids where done I snacked on a banana with some cocoa powder. I didn’t take a photo but I’ll share on GreenLiteBites this week. It’s my new snack obsession but it’s pretty weird. You’ll see.

I’m off. I have a date at the gym tomorrow bright and early! Hope you had a great weekend!

Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!

Hey, Mom! I am wishing you a happy Mother’s Day on my blog so I can post a picture of this:

Your Mother's Day card

This is your Mother’s Day card! You can tell because it’s in a pretty pink envelope. Which is still in my possession. It would be sitting in your mailbox in Indianapolis if I had paid attention to any of the junk mail advertisements I received in the past few weeks that explicitly stated that Mother’s Day was this weekend. However, I have a highly attuned ability to filter out most advertising, so I thought Mother’s Day was NEXT weekend. But really, isn’t Mother’s Day EVERY day? Of course it is. Which is why you will not be upset when I pop this in the mailbox this evening and you get it on Tuesday. (Be swift, United States postal service. Be swift!)

Love you!

As you’d imagine, today our household is all about laughter & lagoons.  Silliness & scurvy talk.

But first?

We. Exercise.

Or, more aptly put, we compel our pirate to get *his* exercise on in preparation for a day of hornpipe playing and grog drinking.

I know he appears happy. Do not be misled.

He’s not a morning-pirate and hasnt worked out in years.

Since, to his pirate’y chagrin, he doesnt rock the hoop–I segue to something at which he excels.  Resistance training!

(I know it looks like a jump rope. I blame his hook.)

Ever the vigilant trainer I intuit my pirate needs agility & speed work.

I quickly set up cones for him to run.

Once his cold, pirate heart-rate returns to normal we head outside for Swiss ball push-ups.

(Indeed these do resemble planks. I learned the hard way (unless you want to walk one)—do not tell him so!)

Finally, because Ive given up trying to teach him how to use my beloved lacrosse ball for his booty (rimshot!), we foam roll and call it a day.

We really do embrace, celebrate and go way a wee bit overboard on Talk like a Pirate Day.

But dont panic.

Were you blissfully unaware today was a holiday?Do you have absolutely no clue how to celebrate this momentous, annual occasion?

Fear no more.

Ive created some fun for you to play along with at home.

2 Non GMO Foods That Will Make Your Hungry Mouth Happy

Enter into the world of Non GMO splendor. If you listen closely, you can hear the sound of an angel batting its wings, a unicorn’s tail wagging in the wind, and my heavy breathing as I come up for air after each Non GMO gulp & chew. It’s a wonderful world to be in, my friends. Let’s examine this much sought-after place where Non GMO foods dwell. Lean in a little closer. Let me show you what I mean…

THE BETTER CHIP: SPINACH & KALE

better chip 2 Non GMO Foods That Will Make Your Hungry Mouth HappyI’m going to skip all the fancy introductions and get right to the point: Spinach & Kale Better Chips are THE MOST tastiest, THE MOST heartiest, THE MOST satisfying. Made with corn masa and infused with bits of spinach & kale so large, I really can’t call them “bits”. Perhaps “veggie bits on steroids” is a better way to describe it. Your stomach’s life will be complete only after you bite into one and try it for yourself. All other tortilla chips are inferior. I declare this to be fact. If you see these in the store, pick up one bag for yourself and 15 bags for me. I’m not ashamed to admit I hid The Better Chip bag from the greedy family to consume the chips in solitude. If hiding the bag is wrong, I don’t wanna be right.

ORGANIC VALLEY MILK

organic valley 2 Non GMO Foods That Will Make Your Hungry Mouth HappyDammit! This milk is expensive — almost $5 for a 1/2 gallon — but since GMO-infested milk was next on my list to eliminate from my home, I had to make that move towards the Organic Valley. Their milk is both organic and non-GMO. It’s sourced from a co-op of family farmers, NOT from a big corporation. We still do almond milk, which is slightly cheaper, yet regular milk has its place in our kitchen.

Check out these statements from Organic Valley:

“The family farmers have not and will never knowingly or willingly utilize genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in any of our products, processes or feed. We have held this position since our inception in 1988.”

“By keeping family farmers on the land, you are protecting your right to choose foods produced the way you want them produced—a way that ensures quality, health, humane animal treatment, and the stewardship of our environment. Because we are a cooperative, we are under no obligation to answer to stockholders demanding higher profits year after year. On the contrary, we listen to nature and the wisdom of generations of organic family farming.”

More info at: OrganicValley.coop

There you have it. Can ya feel the splendor?

How I found my happy heart (guest post)

Heart disease is the number one cause of death in North America:  according to the CDC in 2008, 616,000 people died as a result – meaning that 1 in 4 deaths could be attributed to heart disease. The stats surrounding heart health can be staggering, and we are inundated with this type of information everyday.

But what do you really think of when you think of heart disease? Probably an older man? You might picture him overweight? Hair greying and thinning from many stress filled years? Maybe not leading the healthiest lifestyle? Possibly a smoker?

I can pretty much guarantee that you didn’t picture me. A 27 year old healthy living blogger who is gearing up to train for her first marathon. Am I right?

MizFit note: I love my Darwinian Fail.

But the truth is I am one of the faces of heart disease and I have been battling my heart condition and my body for the last decade.

I was just 17 when I was diagnosed with my arrhythmia – Long QT Syndrome. And I was just 18 when I was outfitted with my very first pacemaker/defibrillator.

Yep, it’s me and the Oldie-Goldies just kicking it at the cardio clinic. Robot hearts are where it’s at these days. Cyborg powers activate! What?! What?! But I digress. Because while I am very proud to say that I am now a healthy happy 20-something, it was a long road back from the brink.

For me, obviously, a happy healthy heart doesn’t come naturally. It is something I have had to work at. And while I whole-heartedly give an insane amount of credit to my doctors, the advances in medical science, and my whole cardio team – just the medical intervention alone wasn’t enough. I still had a LOT of rough days, especially early on in my diagnosis.

My health definitely improved, but “bad days” were a norm in my world. Those bad days meant I just couldn’t get started. My body was already exhausted from battling my unruly ticker, and I was unable to do much else. I struggled with my energy levels and some days could not even bring myself to venture beyond the comforts of my bed.

And I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve got a lot of living to do! So I couldn’t afford to be spending so much time down and out.

I needed to get going.

So that is how Operation Happy Heart began.

I found myself losing faith in my body’s ability to work for me, instead of against me. I felt myself losing hope with each “bad day” that past. And I felt my resolve and drive being swallowed up by my diagnosis.

My health wasn’t mine anymore. My body and what it could do was ruled by how happy my heart was that day, and I no longer felt like I controlled that.

It was frustrating and absolutely terrifying, but I turned up at my cardiologists door asking for my body back. I wanted my life back. I wanted to be in control of my health again.

So we started slow.

Just eating more vegetables. Skip the all-night parties – which is easier said than done for student away at university.

Trying to make movement part the regular routine – walk more, maybe even try yoga. These were all manageable changes that I gradually incorporated into my day-to-day life, and the change in my body was profound.

I started keeping a running tally of my good days vs. bad. What was different? What was different from one day to the next? What could I do the help to make these bad days fewer and farther between? The solution made itself clear in a hurry once I started to give it some thought.

If I take care of my body, then my body will take care of me.

Weekend Quote: Being Happy

“Being happy doesn’t mean that everything is perfect. It means that you’ve decided to look beyond the imperfections.” -Unknown

Yes! LOVE this.

I’d rather me happy than perfect anyway. Wouldn’t you?
