Climb Corcovado Mountain With Me (60-day fat burning virtual challenge)

8/1/13 UPDATE: I am 200 steps up the Mountain. Come with me. Let’s do this! We’re gonna make it to the top!

You know this mountain. Surely you’re familiar with its image. Are you ready to burn more fat?

corcovado mountain Climb Corcovado Mountain With Me (60 day fat burning virtual challenge)

Corcovado Mountain is the site of the world famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. The site is nestled in Tijuca Forest national park. The mountain scenery is beautiful, intriguing and definitely climb-worthy. No passport required.

Here’s the quick & dirty info on the climbing challenge:

We’ll be scaling 2,330 feet up Corcovado Mountain and arriving at its peak where the statue sits. We’ll travel up the mountain via Mountain Climbers. This is NOT a walking/pedometer challenge. The challenge starts on Thursday, August 1st.Each left-foot, right-foot action of our Mountain Climbers counts as 2 steps/reps (2 feet) up the mountain. If you do 40 reps of Mountain Climbers each day, you will have scaled Corcovado in 58.25 days, but feel free arrive atop the mountain in 45 days or less if you dare. This will mean more reps each day, of course.

Mountain Climbers work the abs, legs, arms, abs and back. It’s basically a total body exercise. It also burns fat since your heart rate gets up there, and it doesn’t take long to knock out your reps. The climb is perfect to challenge your current fitness level.

Add this challenge to your stash of post-workout intensity drills or do your climbers while the kids are splashing in the tub. You get the idea, right? Yes, you CAN fit this in.

Many thanks to @debroby for inspiring this challenge. It was great to virtually climb Mt. Tamalpais with her back in the day.

ALERT! Anyone who quits the challenge part way through is considered to have fallen off the side of the mountain. I’ll keep search & rescue on stand-by.

Kitchen Workout Challenge sponsored by Egg Beaters

Oh people.

I should be embarrassed how excited I am for this week.

The fun & enjoyment I got from the *process* of creating these posts surprised even me.

I rant about how fitness (& life) should include having fun during the journey and not only on the end goal.

These next 5 posts embody that notion for me.

I give you an entire week of challenges brought to us by Egg Beaters 100% egg whites.

A week of videos.

Now, lest you think Ive not been paying attention, I have. I’ve heard you.

You *think* you don’t love the vlogs & I shall spend the next five days attempting to prove you wrong.

I sing.

I throw in free style rhymes & hip hop dance.

I don grown-up apparel & pretend to have a real “office job.”

I employ POP UPs ala VH1's pop up videos (remember those?) in case you need to turn the volume down & wanna absorb the info that way.

Are you ready?

Yes?

Please to join me in my kitchen for 78 seconds.

I CHALLENGE YOU.

This post is brought to you by Egg Beaters 100% Egg Whites. The singing, dancing & kitchen’ercizing are all my own.

The Brita Challenge aka The I-Kick-MizFit’s-Butt-and-Get-My-Drink-ON! Challenge

Brita Challenge

I never turn down a challenge. Ever.

Have I told you I’m a wee bit competitive? Not at everything, just at things I think I’m good at.

And I’m darn good at drinking water.

Not as good as I used to be though.

There was a time I was never without my water bottle. We were attached at the hip. Never to be separated. Home. Work. Class. On walks. In the car. I was constantly sipping.

It was a habit.

Every night I’d fill my bottle half with water, throw it in the freezer, then the next morning I’d fill the rest with water. Off to work I’d go with my trusty companion. If I ran out? Hello water fountain.

It worked for me, but only when I had a consistent daily routine.

Now I’m all over the place. Having a newborn and working for yourself is pretty much the definition of inconsistent.

I still drink water, but not nearly as much as I used to. I just forget. I’m out of the habit and to be honest, I miss it.

I may even miss it more than I realize.

According to Nutrition Today, even minor dehydration can impair your mental health. Degradation of cognitive function and mood begins at a point between 1% and 2% water mass loss.

Maybe THAT’S my problem!

I kid. I kid.

In all seriousness though. Water rocks. It’s just does.

That’s why I’m psyched for the Brita Challenge!

Drink 8–10 glasses of water a day for four weeks and feel the difference it makes. Join us:

Finish It Monday: No One Can Do It But YOU (Plus, a Planking Challenge!)

If it were all up to me, you would all be finishers. You would all be on track and you would all get it done. There’s over 100 peeps who committed to the Finish What You Started Challenge, but as we creep into the final weeks of the Challenge, the cold hard truth is that not all of you will finish with flying colors.

I am not a psychic nor do a practice crystal-balling in my spare time, but I do have some end of challenge predictions: When the Challenge is over on October 31st you will fall into 1 of 3 categories:

Category #1: You committed, but it wasn’t sincere. Why? Because you barely followed through (if at all?) with the disciplines and actions necessary to get the results you want. There is no evidence of real change or progress in your life.

Category #2: You committed, and despite your occasional need for some do-overs that caused a few set backs, you pushed through to finish in a better place than when you started. Your goals are not yet met, but you’ve created solid habits that are constantly moving you closer to where you want to be. Although you are still working to pave out those bumps in the round, your desire is like a bulldozer and you won’t stop plowing through until you get what you want.

Category #3: You committed and you got it done (woo-haaa!), but you also understand that “finishing” also requires a lifestyle of consistency to hold onto what you’ve achieved. Your bad ass ways are a lifestyle now.

Whatever category you fall into, it’s by your own design. No one can get this thing done but YOU.

I want to hear about your fitness plans for this week, so sound off in the comments. Be sure to give yourself one bonus star for salad-chewing AND a 2nd bonus star for at least 4 days of planking.

Yep. It’s time to plank it out! Hold in the static position pictured above. Body straight and in line. Don’t bow your back so your hips drop down or poke your booty up.

Let’s see how your plank hold times increase by the end of the week! When I did my very first plank over a year ago, it held it for 18 seconds. With consistent practice, I progressed to my best plank time of 3:20 minutes. I didn’t plank much after that, so my recent best time is down to 2:04 minutes. I’ll report in next week with my latest planking times. You go for it, too!

I earned 26 stars last week. Download your Star Chart and keep it movin’ and have a great week!

Brita Challenge (AKA Go Team MizFit!!)

Click me! Click me!

Ahhhh People.

There has been a severe drought in Texas this summer and Im not talking about the weather.

Im talking about my mouth.

My water-hole hath become more of a word-which-rhymes-with-BAPPLE hole.

Intellectually I knew I was doing my body a tremendous disservice, but tired, crazed, misfit on the go’ly I almost didnt care.

Almost.

Because as I saw/felt my lack of proper hydration impact pretty much every fact of my life (from workouts to wellness) I began to care quickfastandinahurry.

As a result when I was offered the chance to be a part of the Brita Challenge to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day I knew there were no accidents.

I’d love for you to join me. I know I need to do this.

Lemmie break it down:

MYTH: MizFit has lovely light yellow urine which practically sings I’m happily hydrated as it exits her bladder.

FACT: The Tornado & I were emptying our bladders in a public place when she announced loudly: Look Mama! we both have yellow yellow peepee! This, uh, pee pee color is not a good indicator of overall my health and MUSCULAR hydration (!).

MYTH: MizFit has been feeling mildly mentally sluggish lately due to the untimely removal of her Tornado sidekick for government mandated kindergarten.

FACT: When our bodies become dehydrated our attention & concentration can decrease by 13% & short term memory by 7%. Clicking the pitcher above and joining me in drinking 8-10 glasses of water per day (fortuitously the amount contained in said pitched!) can greatly help our mental acuity. (**cue confetti shaped like something I caint recall but will as soon as I properly hydrate**)

MYTH: MizFit has kinda old looking skeletor hands.

FACT: Thankfully my seriously when did I get me the hands of my grandma issues might also be tied into my mouth’s water drought! Another way to test for dehydration is to pinch the back of your hand while it is resting it on a flat surface. When you release the pinch, your skin should snap back into place. A slooooow return to normal can be a sign youre dehydrated.

So where do we go from here?

How do we mitigate our dehydration levels all while having fun and leaning way too heavily upon you guys and harnessing the power of community I yammer about all the time?

Im so glad you asked.

As a woman in possession of way too much chutzpah Ive challenged Roni Noone in conjunction with the Brita Challenge (click the pitcher! click the pitcher!) I can hydrate better than she.

Check us out on Twitter hashtag #britachallenge. It’s gonna git ugly be all in fun.

And, because I KNOW none of you would reveal them to the enemey Roni, below are the tricks I plan to use during our one month challenge:

Until I find a drinking water groove—Ive created a hydration schedule as I do with all important facets of my life. Ive set alarm reminders and everything!
I plan to match any NON-WATER beverages with same amount of water (this works well for me as I tend to eliminate non-water to reduce amount of time spent running to & fro rest room).Im wearing 10 rubber bands on one wrist & switching to other after each glass consumed (YAY visual reminders. BOO I dont possess 10 lovely bangles).Ive sliced lemon, lime, & cucumbers and placed them in my 10 cup purple pitcher. Aesthetically pleasing AND tasty!

Now I seek your help.

PLEASE to gimmie your best water drinking/staying hydrated tip in the comments below and I will lock the post from She whose name I will not say’s prying eyes.

And maybe, in the name of healthy living, Ill share and help the opposing team out as well but really probably not.

FTC my Brita water bottle and pitcher were FREE. My ability or inability to stick with the challenge is all my own.

My Pics From The Gorilla Challenge in Philly!

It took us over 4-hours to do the Challenge as we scavenger-hunted throughout the streets of Philly. Today my feet hurt and my legs are sore, but the Gorilla Challenge was so much freaking fun!

“Gorilla Challenge is an ‘Amazing Race’ style event, combined with ‘Fear Factor’ and the ‘American Idol’ where you and your team race to solve clues around the city, taking pictures in silly to crazy poses, completing fun/difficult/gross activities, hoping you either get the grand prize or at least mini prizes along the way, and having loads of fun!”

We gathered at my good friend Kristi’s (left in pink). This is where I met the other awesome gal pals. My scavenger hunt crew!

Once we got to Philly and checked-in, Kristi suggested we kill some time before the event kicked off. In a bar. At 9:30am. LOL! (eh, the bar was right next door)

And this is my first reaction to someone’s suggestion that I do my very first shot ever in life. As you can see, I was kinda on the fence about it.

…and I obviously needed some help.

Our first clue led us to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier monument. The rules said we had to snap a picture, saluting.

But not all the clues were easy! It took us awhile to find the park where Kristi had to have an ocean of vinegar sprayed into her mouth before we could earn our next 6 clues.

Philadelphia Theatre Company (where we had to strike a Charlie’s Angels pose), was NOWHERE near the vinegar-spraying park. Geeeze! It was miles of walking ’round that city.

And then we walked for many more blocks (sometimes in the wrong direction) to get to the place where we had to form a human pyramid.

Most of the clues were VERY hard. The hunt was so difficult that not even the Philly locals could show us the way. Don’t they look confused?

But we did briefly meet up with Fred, Wilma and Baby Pebbles to compare scavenging notes. We helped each other solve a few more clues.

After over 4-hours of flexing our muscles around the city, we couldn’t figure out the rest of the clues (we got 8 out of 12) and ran out of time.

So we collected our beaded necklaces and cheered on our fellow Gorilla-ers who won the cash prizes. Oh, and then we had a greedy fro down, of course. My azz was hungry! I gnawed on nachos, a turkey burger and sweet potato fries.

The Gorilla Challenge also has a charity component. They’ve partnered with Accerlated Cure Project for Multiple Sclerosis AND collected our canned good donations on the day of the event to benefit the local food bank.

You gotta check out the website to see if the Gorilla is coming to a city near you!

Finish What You Started Challenge

Start. Stop. Start. Give up. Re-start. Lose patience. Get discouraged. Stop again. Oh, damn. Now start over…

Does this pattern sound familiar? Isn’t it time you started and finally finished that thing without the mold and maggot juice eating away at your goals? (emmm, of course it’s time…)

If your fitness life is bad ass and overflowing with the splendor of many diamond encrusted unicorn hooves, please feel free to be a spectator. But if you need some ass-kicking encouragement with a dose of accountability to get fitness the job done, then I invite you to embark on this 3-month journey with the Finish What You Started Challenge!

I’m gonna be lighting a flame under you ass and you WILL get results.

How Does The Challenge Work?

At the beginning of each week, Yum Yucky will dish out one or more Missions (like small homework assignments and fitness challenges) and uber-motivation while YOU commit to getting things done. There is only starting and finishing. There is no in-between. Over the course of 92 days (August 1st thru October 31st) this partnership between me and you is all for your benefit – it’s for your progress and success. No more stagnant results!

The Challenge will help you to:

Develop a game plan with clearly defined goals.Work your plan with discipline and consistency for real results.Stay accountable to everything you commit to.Break bad habits and overcome other challenges that hinder your progress.Push you out of your comfort zone.Handle your “fall of the wagon” moments without crushed confidence and lost ground.

The Finish What You Started Challenge will guide you through 3 major components:

Fitness: Centered around body transformation and wellness.Personal: Why? Because personal stuff can impact your fitness goals.Rewards System: To motivate and help you gauge “Perceived Effort vs. Actual Progress”.

So are you ready for this? Here’s how to join the Finish What You Started Challenge

You first Mission right this very minute is to sign up. Why? Because you are making a formal commitment. There will be weekly posts for you to follow along, but you also don’t want to miss out on the other awesome stuff I’m dishing out only to challenge participants who sign up.

Once you’ve joined the challenge today, start thinking about what it is you finally need to finish (or at least work towards consistently over the next 3 months) and then put it down on paper. This is serious stuff because whatever you write down is exactly what you will get out of this Challenge (if you stay committed). Then stay tuned for more info and your mission for the upcoming week (to be released this coming Sunday)!

Welcome to the Challenge, and may you finish STRONG!

Baron Baptiste's Hot Yoga: The Power Yoga Method -(Level 2 - The Next Challenge) [VHS]

Baron Baptiste's Hot Yoga: The Power Yoga Method -(Level 2 - The Next Challenge) [VHS]This video misrepresents itself. Although the title is Low Impact Aerobics, it is not low impact. The cardio intervals include jogging, jumping jacks, and other moves with hops. This is a 65-minute reissue of a 1988 video that features Janet Jones-Gretzky, who is so slim that you can count her ribs through her white leotard, leading a class of fit, gorgeous exercisers (female and male). This aerobic interval workout combines fast cardio (no patterns) with more controlled cardio plus weights, though still at a fast pace. We've learned a lot about exercise since 1988, and these two-second reps with weights are not as effective as slower reps. They are also more likely to lead to injury. Although the video is targeted to all levels, unless you're an experienced exerciser, it's too easy to lose correct form when you're doing such fast reps and aerobic moves at the same time. You might find the weight intervals repetitious (tons of lunges and shoulder presses). A floor-work segment uses ankle weights, followed by a stretch. Unless you miss the old Firm workouts, choose one that is more up to date (and therefore safer and more effective). --Joan Price

Challenge: Walk with me?

I wanted to tell you guys about this earlier but the day got away from me. I had a little work to do this morning and then Little Bean and I took a nap…

Tomorrow he’s 4 weeks. Can you believe it? I can’t. (side note: click here for for more baby photos. I did a side by side of Little Guy and LIttle Bean)

I also can’t believe tomorrow is my second Weight Watchers weigh in. I’ve been keeping up with my food journal and it’s been fun! Totally helping with the mindless nibbles and keeping me honest. Exactly what it’s suppose to be doing. I haven’t been counting points but that’s a whole other story I’ll get into tomorrow. I want to see how my weigh in goes first.

Anyway, let me get back to the point of this post. I have posed a challenge on BlogToLose, the Let’s Walk! Challenge!

The idea is simple. Take at least a 10 minute walk a day for 1 week. It’s just a week and it’s just 10 minute but I truly believe this is how it starts. This is a great was to adopt healthy habits. It’s all about making small attainable goals that build confidence and sets momentum in the right direction.

And you better not be thinking you’ll start this challenge on Sunday. As I said in an older challenge post

My perfection gene would love it if we always started a challenge on Sunday and wrapped it up by Saturday BUT we are about breaking out of that mold here on BlogToLose. We no longer wait till Monday to live healthier. Right? We don’t "throw away" a day because we were tempted by an office donut. There is no more "I already… I might as well…" mindset anymore. We do what we can when we can. We forgive ourselves if we aren’t "perfect" and we move on. Weight loss happens over time one choice AT a time and the more we get that through our heads the better. I hope to help shed that perfection disease by mixing it up with these challenges.

I’ll be making the choice the find at least 10 minutes tomorrow and I hope you’ll join me. :)

Minn. Lawmakers Take Weight-Loss Challenge « CBS Minnesota

By Esme Murphy, WCCO-TV

ST. PAUL (WCCO) — On Tuesday night, at least some Democrats and Republicans will sit together at President Obama’s State of the Union Address. State lawmakers followed suit Monday.

They stood side by side, and took on a challenge to eat healthy, lose weight and stay fit. And they were joined by a couple of reality show stars to launch the Biggest Loser Minnesota Challenge.

“Who really wants to weigh 400 pounds,” asked O’Neal Hampton of St. Paul. “No one does.”

He sure didn’t. And neither did Richfield’s Jesse Atkins. So now, these Biggest Loser alumni are helping Minnesotans with a weight loss competition of their own. There are 14 different divisions. Some for the state’s biggest companies signed up, and so did the legislature.

“We are firmly committed to not only participating, but to beating the Senate wholeheartedly,” said Senate Majority Leader Matt Dean.

It will be a bipartisan competition between the House and the Senate, not between the parties.

“I think it sends a message to our citizens,” said Sen. Terri Bonoff. “That we think this is serious.”

With tempting foods like Swedish meatballs at the Capitol cafeteria, and more meetings than time to work out, lawmakers say fitness can be a struggle during the session. But it will be worth the work.

“The reality is this is something, regardless of partisan lines, that I think everybody understands,” said Rep. Paul Thissen, the House Minority Leader. “The most important thing we can do to keep healthcare costs down is for all Minnesotans to stay healthy.”

They’ll get points for healthy eating and exercising, along with weight loss. And, the winner will be announced April 15.

“It’s the House against the Senate,” said Sen. Julie Rosen. “And I tell you what, if you were a betting guy, I’d put money on us. The Senate.”

The contest was created by Alliance For A Healthier Minnesota. Almost 18,000 people have already signed up.
