Why I absolutely MUST complete 790 Mountain Climbers before the stroke of midnight tonight.

This past August, I committed to conquering 2,330 reps of Mountain Climbers before Oct 1st arrived. As of today, I’ve completed only 1,540 climbers — still 790 to go. It’s gonna be a beyotch, but I WILL get all 790 mountain climbers done before the stroke of midnight tonight.

Talk about one helluva workout. It’s my own fault I’m stuck with so many reps still left to do at the last minute (please slap me). But I’m not a quitter and refuse to fail this challenge. I will get it done. BOOM!

Climb Corcovado Mountain With Me (60-day fat burning virtual challenge)

8/1/13 UPDATE: I am 200 steps up the Mountain. Come with me. Let’s do this! We’re gonna make it to the top!

You know this mountain. Surely you’re familiar with its image. Are you ready to burn more fat?

corcovado mountain Climb Corcovado Mountain With Me (60 day fat burning virtual challenge)

Corcovado Mountain is the site of the world famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. The site is nestled in Tijuca Forest national park. The mountain scenery is beautiful, intriguing and definitely climb-worthy. No passport required.

Here’s the quick & dirty info on the climbing challenge:

We’ll be scaling 2,330 feet up Corcovado Mountain and arriving at its peak where the statue sits. We’ll travel up the mountain via Mountain Climbers. This is NOT a walking/pedometer challenge. The challenge starts on Thursday, August 1st.Each left-foot, right-foot action of our Mountain Climbers counts as 2 steps/reps (2 feet) up the mountain. If you do 40 reps of Mountain Climbers each day, you will have scaled Corcovado in 58.25 days, but feel free arrive atop the mountain in 45 days or less if you dare. This will mean more reps each day, of course.

Mountain Climbers work the abs, legs, arms, abs and back. It’s basically a total body exercise. It also burns fat since your heart rate gets up there, and it doesn’t take long to knock out your reps. The climb is perfect to challenge your current fitness level.

Add this challenge to your stash of post-workout intensity drills or do your climbers while the kids are splashing in the tub. You get the idea, right? Yes, you CAN fit this in.

Many thanks to @debroby for inspiring this challenge. It was great to virtually climb Mt. Tamalpais with her back in the day.

ALERT! Anyone who quits the challenge part way through is considered to have fallen off the side of the mountain. I’ll keep search & rescue on stand-by.

3 Consecutive Saturdays of 100 Burpees and 500 Mountain Climbers. Here Are My Times

100 Burpees and 500 Mountain Climbers. I’ve accomplished this every Saturday for the past 3 Saturdays.

I had planned on doing it as a one-time workout, and even that first time I never thought in a million years I’d accomplish so many reps. And now it’s turn out to be such a bad ass, body transformation workout, that this Saturday morning tradition is going to continue on.

Here are my times for 100 Burpees and 500 Mountain climbers each Saturday:

January 21st: Approx 35 min (didn’t use timer)January 28th: 29.18 minutesFebruary 4th: 23.57 minutesFebruary 11th: I’m coming for ya!

Had I not timed myself, I don’t think I would’ve pushed so hard past my perceived limitations. It’s the pushing to beat my previous times that’s got me accomplishing this personal awesomeness. Didn’t know I had it in me. But I do.

Are YOU ready to unleash your own potential? It doesn’t have to be done via Burpees and Mountain Climbers, but I challenge you to pick something tough and go hard.

Weekend Quote: Climbing a Mountain

I must have uttered the phrase,

“When I lose weight I’m going to….”

A million times in my life.

I said (and thought) it instead of wearing what I wanted to wear, doing what I wanted to be doing and experiencing what I should have been experiencing.

“Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain. An occasional glance towards the summit keeps the goal in mind, but many beautiful scenes are to be observed from each new vantage point.”
- Harold B Melchart

I don’t think there is anything wrong with having a weight loss goal. What is wrong is thinking you aren’t…

good enough,

strong enough,

worthy enough,

to live the life you want RIGHT NOW regardless of some stupid number on some stupid scale.

Have a goal. Work at the goal. But remember to enjoy the “beautiful scenes” now.

Clif Mojo All Natural Trail Mix Bars (Mountain Mix) Review

Clif Mojo Mountain Mix Bar

Over the weekend, I bought quite a few nutrition bars to review and to update past reviews. As I browsed the MANY varieties, I decided to pick up a few all natural bars, including Clif Mojo Mountain Mix Bars. It's said to be made up of 70% organic ingredients, low glycemic, and is described as a, "deliciously sweet & salty snack dedicated to getting out there and mixing things up."

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 bar (45 grams)
Calories: 190
Total Fat: 9 grams, 14%
Saturated Fat: 1.5 grams, 8%
Sodium: 200 mg, 8%
Carbohydrates: 21 grams
Fiber: 2 grams, 8%
Sugars: 12 grams
Protein: 8 grams

I really don't get the appeal of the "sweet AND savory" taste. This bar is 99% sweet - with an entire top layer of chocolate chips, lots of nuts & raisins all held together in a soy rice crisp matrix held together by brown rice syrup - which is the first ingredients. It lulled me into forgetting about the "salty" aspect of the description, until BAM - it feels like someone threw a random grain of salt in the mix - and I wasn't really thrilled. After that, the salty undertones was a little more noticeable. I do like this bar though - it's crunchy and the nuts that are really the star of the show. Forget about the raisins, because it was like they didn't exist since although I could see them, they didn't show up in the taste (other than contributing to the sweetness) or the texture.

Each 45 gram Clif Mojo Mountain Mix Bars provides 190 calories from 9 grams of total fat (14% of the daily value), 1.5 grams of which is saturated (8% of the DV), 200 mg sodium (8% of the DV) 12 grams of sugars, 2 grams of fiber (8% of the DV) and 8 grams of protein.

I bought this bar for $1.19, but I'm on the fence about whether or not I would buy it again since it's a little too sweet for my tastes, but I do like the fact that it does use all natural ingredients. I much prefer Gnu Foods Espresso Chip Flavor & Fiber Bar (Review), which provides 140 calories, 4 grams of total fat, 4 grams of protein, 12 grams of dietary fiber (48% of the DV) and 8 grams of sugar.

Have you tried Clif Mojo Bars yet - what did you think?

Fat Woman on the Mountain: A long overdo book review.

Fat Woman on the MountainI’m a horrible reader which makes me a horrible book reviewer. It can seriously take me months to read your average fiction book. Thankfully I discovered James Patterson. His short chapter approach matches my reading style, 2-3 pages a day. Seriously, it’s like I’m a ‘reading grazer’. A little here, a little there. Then I forget about it for a few days. Yet I still agree to do book reviews. Why? I love books. I really do. I just wish I had better reading habits.

Not surprisingly, a few MONTHS ago Kara Richardson Whitely sent me her book, Fat Woman on the Mountain: How I lost half myself and found happiness. It’s been on my must read list since meeting Kara at last years FitBloggin’ conference. She mentioned the book would be coming out this fall and I was happy to get her email when it did.

The book is about Kara’s journey to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. Kara isn’t you typical mountain climber. She is an inspirational 120lb loser. In the book, she spends a couple of chapters talking about her childhood and weight struggles but her story is so much more than weight loss. It’s an inspirational tale of a woman who set a goal regardless of her weight or what people thought of it.

In her own words…

At age 30, I was lost within my own body.  I dreamed of climbing
mountains but the only thing that went up was my weight — to
about 360 pounds.

During one New Year’s Eve, it all changed when I wrote down
what wanted to do instead of how many pounds I wanted to lose.  I decided to look at weight loss as a lifelong journey and I got
moving. I resolved to climb mountains.

How inspirational is THAT?!? As someone who let her body image get in the way of life for too many years and I can totally relate to Kara and her story. Her book was moving, inspirational and motivating. REALLY motivating. While I was reading it, the husband was starting to get worried that I might sign up to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. That’s how much I was talking about it.

Kara woke up one day and just did it. No excuses. No feeling sorry for herself. She put in the work and did the best she could. There is nothing more motivational than that.
