You Need to Know About This: Grocery Shelves With Cameras Will Spy On You, the H7N9 Avian Flu Outbreak

omgface You Need to Know About This: Grocery Shelves With Cameras Will Spy On You, the H7N9 Avian Flu Outbreak You ready to be shocked, enraged, and totally weirded out? Then let’s get it started…

COMING SOON: High Tech Grocery Shelves With Built-in Cameras Will Spy on You, Store Info into Database: Well ya, we’re already being spied on at the grocery store when making a purchase, but you can blame companies like Chips Ahoy, Nabisco and Ritz for this newest method of spy-foolery. The surveillance, coming as soon as 2015, is described as “high tech shelves with built in cameras”, as reported by a Fox affiliate. Those nosy bastards want to acquire knowledge about you at the shelf-level, and store it into their database. They want to know who you are (your age, gender and other personal information) so they can better market their crappy products.

“But Josie, I don’t eat those bullcrap Chips Ahoy. I don’t even go down the junk food aisle, so this won’t affect me.”

Well sure, but I don’t think the spying will stop at the cookie aisle. It’s not the style of greedy corporations to merely take an inch. They want the entire mile.

BIRD-TO-HUMAN Transmission of H7N9 Avian Bird Flu Virus: There are now over 130 laboratory confirmed cases in China. This is a fact. But with China being so far way, should we really be concerned? Based on July 2013 data reported by the World Health Organization (WHO), the virus has a 32% death rate. That’s pretty high. There have been additional confirmed cases since this WHO data was released.

What’s interesting is that the United States CDC has been quietly preparing for a potential avian bird flu pandemic. I say “quietly”, because it’s not being reported by mainstream media. You have to dig for the information. With the existence of no safe vaccine currently available, the CDC has recently awarded a contract for the implementation of a National Nurse Triage Hotline During a Severe Influenza Pandemic. Interesting, huh? There are also plans for the Emergency Alert System (EAS) to be activated during such a time.

EAS is a national public warning system that requires broadcasters (radio, cable, satellite and wireless) to provide their communications capabilities to the President to address the American public during a national emergency. ~ source

This info isn’t meant to incite fear-mongering or running wild through the streets half-naked screaming, “PANDEMIC!!!” (but wouldn’t that be fun?). Please, just be informed. It’s important that you read the entirety of information as reported by POTRblog.com to understand the full scope of infection in China, including latest developments, and what our CDC is doing to prepare for a potential H7N9 outbreak here in the States. The preparations are extensive. Many thanks to POTRblog for his well-researched, continuing coverage.

Alrightie then. Carry on now. Don’t you need to be doing some squats or pushups or something? O_O

Four lessons resistance training taught me about life.

MizFit Flexing post 300x233 Four lessons resistance training taught me about life. I found my voice in the weight room.

Resistance training, for me, is bigger than something I do to stay fit as I age.

It’s taught me more about life than any other experience and, paradoxically, helps me remain laser-focused on whats important to me outside fitness.

I advocate resistance training for health—but am a resistance training evangelist because of what Ive learned from it about living fully.

1. If you wait for the perfect facility opportunity you’ll always find an excuse not to start.

Ive trained in less than ideal conditions. Central American gyms stocked with rusty dumbbells. Dilapidated college weight rooms. Outdoors in Oakland with homeless on one side & muscle-bound men on the other. These experiences taught me to expand my definition of “perfect gym.” They also sparked me to realize when I claimed to be waiting for “perfect timing” in life it was really paralysis by analysis. It was merely an excuse.

2. Change is how we grow.

Initially I did the same weights routine day after day & plateaued quickly. I knew what I was doing wasnt working—but the pain I “knew” felt better than the painful risk of change. Eventually I realized I required a new routine to grow & Ive applied this notion to my life. Change in routine. Change in perspective. Change–in fitness and life—is the only way we wont stagnate.

20120904 083410 168x300 Four lessons resistance training taught me about life. change. perspective.

3. To succeed you need mind/body connection.

If you’d asked me to flex my biceps 20 years ago–Id not have been capable of making the muscle contract. After months of lifting Id have struggled to flex on command. It took time, patience and focus to formulate the mind/muscle connection crucial to successful resistance training. Only after acquiring that skill did I began to live *in* my body in all aspects of life. I started to eat intuitively. I learned to exercise intuitively. And, very very slowly, I tapped into my ‘gut’ and lived intuitively.

4. We create ourselves and our lives.

I dont have good physical genetics. My body prefers to be soft/not muscular. I watched women with better genetics gain muscle swiftly and easily. I came to a crossroads where I could either grow jealous or grow focused. I chose the latter. Resistance training taught me I am the sculptor of my body and my life. I may not achieve goals as rapidly as some— but if I work tenaciously & tirelessly I’m ensured of progress.

You Need to Know About This. 8/27/13

omgface You Need to Know About This. 8/27/13 Come with me, my peoples. Let us enter into the fancy realm that goes beyond health & fitness. Here’s some news you need to know about. Information is power. Stay informed.

Care to gouge out someone’s eyes? Smash some groins? A crush to the windpipe, perhaps? This may all seem terribly bad, but there’s a buffet of good fighting tactics you can use to kick an assailant’s ass. This article was right on time since the hubs recently taught me the proper technique to gouge out eyeballs. >>FULL STORY

“Each day, for 882 days, nearly 72,000 gallons of polluted (radioactive) water has flowed into the Pacific Ocean.”

Bad enough for you yet? To say the Fukushima situation is out of hand is an understatement. This problem didn’t go away when mainstream media stopped reporting on it two years ago. It got worse. And now? It’s back in mainstream news again because Fukushima is undeniable. The truth cannot be contained, much like the radioactive water flowing into the Pacific. My post on Facebook shows the path of the contaminated water as it lingers along the Pacific Coast of the United States. While one person labeled this an ELE (Extinction Level Event), all I know is, there’s no fixing it. Keep this issue on your radar. >> FULL STORY

This snippet from SurvivalGearStop.com sums it up perfectly: “The current crisis going on at the Fukishima Nuclear Facility in Japan has been raised to a level three emergency. The water that is being used to cool the melted towers is now rapidly pouring into the Pacific Ocean. This water is so toxic that anyone standing near the water for several hours will get radiation poisoning. At this time there is no solution to the problem. You must be prepared for problems with the food chain, shipping, and even fall out. No one is sure what will happen now that this toxic water has entered the ocean.”

Big Pharma is lusting for more pill-popping power over the masses. Their newest scheme is Shift Work Disorder. There’s a pill for that. You’ll be a basket case of incompetence if you don’t treat this “disorder” with their magic pill, NUVIGIL tablets. Never mind that the pills might lead to death as a side effect. It’s no biggie, yo. >> FULL STORY

Let’s Talk About Trigger Foods

20130604_triggers

That would be a box of Wheat Thins in my garbage. I can’t have them in my house. I just can’t, and I haven’t until someone sent me a box in a care package.

The moment they arrived I wanted to open them. I imagined myself just hacking at the block of cheese I have in the fridge and topping them. Cheese — another old trigger that only resurfaces when certain crackers are around. I stopped buying cheese in block form for years, but The Toddler is such a fan, I get them for him now.

Food triggers are interesting. Sometimes I have no desire when a trigger food is around. Other times the thought of the food is like a virus in my brain.

I’ve blogged about this before, specifically about my pizza addiction. That post is almost 6 years old and I can honestly say I’m not sure if I feel the same way anymore. I’ve controlled my environment so much, I’m rarely around the traditional stuff.

For me, that’s my first line of defense, environment control. I also get creative and find lighter, healthier trigger-food replacements. I’ve come up with a cheese and cracker alternative that I absolutely love and have you seem my pizza idea page on GreenLiteBites? Any time I get a craving, I invent a new way to eat pizza without eating pizza and, honestly, it works for me. Like I said, I haven’t really had or even wanted “real” pizza in years.

I’m not quite sure what the trigger behind the trigger food is for me. I swear it’s a texture thing. It’s like I want the food in my mouth and then once I take a bite I can’t stop myself from taking another one, and another one, and another one.

I also think there are ties to my childhood there. I remember eating cheese and crackers with my dad, and pizza was the one thing I was allowed to make as an after-school snack when I was young.

I know I’m not the only one with trigger-food issues so I thought I’d open this up for discussion and make it Question of the Week.

Do you have triggers? What are they? Why? And how do you keep them in check?

We’re at DEFCON 3. Don’t take this lightly. Here’s what you need to do about it.

Friday, April 12, the US raised its nuclear alert status to DEFCON 3, Condition Yellow (out of 5 levels), stating “There are currently no imminent nuclear threats against the United States at this time, however the situation is considered fluid and can change rapidly.” ~source

Whoa. I thought this stuff only happened in movies? This is because of all the North Korea hoopla you’ve been hearing about in the news.

DEFCON stands for “Defense Condition”. We’re at level 3 now. Level 5 is the best, meaning, the lowest state of readiness where everything is honky-dorky. Level 1 is “hold onto your panties and run for you life because the shit just hit the fan”.

defcon Were at DEFCON 3. Dont take this lightly. Heres what you need to do about it.

To put this into perspective, we previously reached DEFCON 3 during the September 11 attacks. We reached DEFCON 2 during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.

But this is a health & fitness blog, so why am I howling about all this DEFCON nonsense? I’m telling you this as a “just in case” alert in the interest of protecting the health & safety of your and your family.

So let’s go through this…

Even if you think the idea of nuclear war is far-fetched, the North Koreans STILL have the ability to knock out our power grid with an EMP attack. EMP stand for Electromangetic Pulse. This EMP would basically knocked out our power grid for an extended period of time. I’m talking months to possibly a year. It would be total blackout conditions. We’d have no reliance on anything that runs on electricity. This threat is so serious that the our government even has an EMP Commission to assess the treat of attacks. I suggest you do some Googled-reading on EMPs.

So, an EMP would affect anything you rely on for electricity. Got money in the bank? You won’t be able to get it out of an ATM. Want some clean water to flow through your home’s pipes? Your city or county won’t have the ability to purify the water because that requires pumps and electricity. Toilet flushing would be obsolete. If you’re hot or cold, heating and air conditioning will be a thing of the past. You won’t even be able to listen to a radio, because an EMP not only knocks out power, it destroys electrical appliances and electrical equipment.

Are you following me here?

Grocery stores would be emptied out in a few short hours. It wouldn’t be a pretty scene if you had to do some last minute shopping for basic necessities. No cell phones either. It would be a state of absolute chaos. And it could happen.

Perhaps this is all overkill. Am I blowing things out of proportion? Nah, I don’t think so. All I’m asking is that at the very minimum, you keep a extra food, water and medical supplies on hand. A portable toilet Were at DEFCON 3. Dont take this lightly. Heres what you need to do about it. is a good idea, too. If you can’t get access to your money, have something to barter with. Oh, and something to defend yourself and secure your home, too. There could be riots.

I keep preaching to you about Potassium Iodide pills. Please…go get some. This isn’t even a suggestion anymore. Just go get some!

It’s DEFCON 3, my friends. Don’t take that lightly. Don’t be that person who ignored this warning, talkin’ about: “I should’ve listened to what Josie said. Now I’m filled with radiation and the power grid is down, and I can’t run on my treadmill and I’m all hungry and dehydrated ‘n stuff”.

M’kay?

Don’t Forget About Your Life Lines

I so did NOT want to cook tonight. I had chicken defrosted for dinner but my energy was tapped after a day out with both boys.

I stared at the messy kitchen with no motivation.

None.

Not an ounce.

Nothing.

Nada.

Nil

Dude I was tiiiired. All I wanted to do was sit on the couch.

I came *this* close to ordering a pizza.

That’s when I decided to…

phone a friend.

Reaching out on twitter and Facebook I said,

Trying to muster up energy to make dinner. I’ve got nothing left in me today. Remind me how much better I feel when I cook verses ordering a pizza because I’m moments from picking up the phone.

A few people chimed in and that’s when AllTheWeigh said…

Make dinner and take a pic…we’ll drool, feel inspired to make our own chicken.

I was re-energized!

Before I knew it, this was simmering on my stove…

Click here to see how I made it.

SO much better then take-out pizza AND my family loved it too.

Don’t be afraid to use your Life Lines.

Whatever they may be.

That’s why they’re there.

What Do You Think About Artificial Sweeteners in Your Foods {Poll}

What Do You Think About Artificial Sweeteners in Your Foods Poll

There is so much controversy about use of "artificial sweeteners" in foods. What do YOU think - take the poll below and let us know how sweet you are on sweeteners

I personally use Splenda, but it's use is limited to coffee which I have 3x a week; and probably a few flavored water, iced teas maybe twice a week - I ABHOR the taste of Stevia in these drinks (so far)!

This Is What I Overheard A Group Of Men Say About Us Women

I recently overheard a group of men discussing how women typically “let themselves go” after marriage. Some of their major points of complaint against married women in general are weight gain, some form of laziness (with laundry? cooking? I dunno.) and lack of motivation to look presentable in nice outfits (including wearing sweat pants or stretchy pants too much, and NOT wearing matching bra & panties on a regular basis).

Oh my.

My own physical appearance has had its ups and downs throughout my marriage, especially in the earliest years. I admit that. Did I let myself go? Well, maybe a just little. But my inattentiveness to my well being was because of the busyness and stressors of managing a growing family while working full time and trying to keep house. After all of that, I DO deserve to throw on some stretchy pants and couch-azz for awhile, dammit!

But I suppose there’s also a fine line that should be drawn between “relaxing while dressed down” opposed to “plain ‘ole lazy and unkempt”.

It’s easy to get comfortable in a marriage and allow your physical appearance and health to take a back seat to everything else going on in your life. It wasn’t until I adopted a healthy lifestyle attitude that I convinced myself it was NOT okay to let my appearance (including a healthy weight) be an afterthought.

I’ve worked hard to be healthy. I enjoy looking good, feeling pretty and having the energy and strength to do everything that’s required of me, plus all the extra stuff I just feel like doing. And although my husband benefits from the way I care of myself physically, I do it for me, not for him.

Yes, my husband was indeed among that group of men who were talking trash about married women, but I’m proud that he defended us ladies. Very proud, indeed. But, nooo. My bra and panties do NOT match 100% of the time. So what?

So tell me ladies: Should this group of men I overheard be given frontal wedgies and a swift kick in the azz?

Let’s Talk About Trigger Foods

There are 4 things in my pantry right now I can’t seem to get enough of: Sun Chips, pretzels, graham crackers, and Doritos. Normally I can easily turn down the husband’s junk (the cookies, the cupcakes, the chips) but those 4 things? They continuously call me from the pantry.

CONTINUOUSLY.

Please tell me I’m not alone. Please tell me there are there foods you have a hard time keeping in the house. I’m hoping it helps me feel less like a loser.

Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It

Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About ItAn eye-opening, myth-shattering examination of what makes us fat, from acclaimed science writer Gary Taubes.

In his New York Times best seller, Good Calories, Bad Calories, Taubes argued that our dietâ??s overemphasis on certain kinds of carbohydratesâ??not fats and not simply excess caloriesâ??has led directly to the obesity epidemic we face today. The result of thorough research, keen insight, and unassailable common sense, Good Calories, Bad Calories immediately stirred controversy and acclaim among academics, journalists, and writers alike. Michael Pollan heralded it as â??a vitally important book, destined to change the way we think about food.â?

Building upon this critical work in Good Calories, Bad Calories and presenting fresh evidence for his claim, Taubes now revisits the urgent question of whatâ??s making us fatâ??and how we can changeâ??in this exciting new book. Persuasive, straightforward, and practical, Why We Get Fat makes Taubesâ??s crucial argument newly accessible to a wider audience.

Taubes reveals the bad nutritional science of the last century, none more damaging or misguided than the â??calories-in, calories-outâ? model of why we get fat, and the good science that has been ignored, especially regarding insulinâ??s regulation of our fat tissue. He also answers the most persistent questions: Why are some people thin and others fat? What roles do exercise and genetics play in our weight? What foods should we eat, and what foods should we avoid?

Packed with essential information and concluding with an easy-to-follow diet, Why We Get Fat is an invaluable key in our understanding of an international epidemic and a guide to what each of us can do about it.

Loudquietloud - A Film About the Pixies

Loudquietloud - A Film About the PixiesThe Pixies' 2004 reunion was the biggest thing that's happened in alternative rock since Nirvana, and filmmakers Steven Cantor and Matthew Galkin were there with their cameras, trailing the genre's progenitors across North America and Europe as they reclaimed their legacy. Besides beautifully shot concert footage featuring all or part of 15 songs, we get a view inside the Pixies' heads. All four were managing complex personal issues when they reunited. We see frontman Frank Black (a.k.a. Black Francis) dealing with a bump in his solo career, bassist Kim Deal juggling sobriety and creating new Breeders songs, guitarist Joey Santiago grappling with parenthood and financial issues, and drummer David Lovering rescued from his post-Pixes life as a struggling magician. They make no secret that they're doing it for the money, but learn along this tour of the world's stages and their psyches that there's a magic in their knotty, raw music that has the power to sustain their audiences and--for a time, at least--themselves. There's bonus footage of the movie's leftovers, but little of it's interesting except for the band's visit to modern psychedelicists Sigur Ros's Iceland studio. Über-producer/guitarist Daniel Lanois provides the film's beautiful, glacially paced incidental music. --Ted Drozdowski

The truth about Calories for Weight Loss Diet Plan | Tony's Weight ...

CaloriesThe amount of calories the body consumes in a day is different for every individual. I am sure you have already noticed on the nutritional labels of the foods you purchase that the ‘percent daily values’ are based on a 2,000-calorie diet. 2,000 calories is just a rough standard for what people consume per day.

Your body might need more or less than 2,000 calories. So you diet/workout weekly to achieve weight loss or just to maintain your body shape, is there an amount of calories burned in a day that you need? Height, weight, gender, age and activity level all affect your caloric requirements for your weight loss plan.

3 Factors That Affect Your Caloric Requirements for weight loss diet plan

There are three main factors involved in calculating how many calories your body needs per day, basal metabolic rate, physical activity, and thermic effect of food.

1. Basal Metabolic Rate

Your basal metabolic rate is the amount of energy your body needs to function when resting. This accounts for about 60-70% of calories burned in a day and also includes the energy required to keep your heart beating, your lungs breathing, your eyelids blinking and your body temperature stabilized. Calories burned in a day are really important. Men have a higher BMR than women.

2. Physical Activity

The next factor in the equation is your physical activity. Physical activity also includes everything from brushing your teeth in the morning to running a mile. The number of calories burned in a day actually has to do with your body weight. Calories burned in a day are very important.

3. Thermic Effect of Food

The thermic effect of food is the final calculation to formula of calories your body burns. This is the amount of energy your body uses to digest the food that you consume. It takes energy to breakdown you food. To calculate the number of calories you disburse in this process, multiply the total number of calories you eat in a day by 0.10, or 10 percent.

Considering these important factors and implement them through proper Diet Program can greatly help many people in their weight loss diet plans.

The Post Where I Talk About Fat People

Yes. I am talking about the people who are fat. Obese. Overweight. Chubby. Curvy. Big-boned. Eh, whatever you want to call it. But it’s not what you think.

Before I began my healthy living journey I didn’t have an opinion about overweight people one way or the other. I barely noticed them. Yet when I first started to eat right and exercise, they began to stick out to me – I noticed them more, and then I DID start to have an opinion.

My (flawed) thinking was that ALL obese people – every last one of them – eats too much and doesn’t care for their own well-being. But, hey, that’s their own business. If they wanted to live that way it was fine by me. I had no further opinion about it. End of story.

But that’s how I used to think.

Since being in this blogging game for awhile I’ve struck up some fantastic friendships with beautiful people off all shapes, sizes, races and genders. I talk with them online in the open social media environment. I chat with some via email or on the phone. I’ve even met up with some in person.

…and of all this “getting to know people” has changed me.

I no longer see fat, thin, big, tall, etc when I relate to people. I love all people. I really do! I just see the awesome person that they are and I’m thankful to know them. Sure, are there definitely some peeps whom I’ve known in my life that really DO eat too much and don’t care for their own well-being. Unfortunately, yes. But let’s remove them from the conversation right now. It’s not about them.

Back in the day when I was judging an overweight person without knowing them or their situation, it was the same as someone judging ME because I’m black. That’s happened to me plenty and it doesn’t feel good either. Why not get to know a person first and understand who they are, right?

After watching shows like Heavy and Too Fat For Fifteen (both of which I appreciate very much for helping me to further understand the “why” behind obesity in many cases), I now understand more than ever that being overweight is not always a cut and dry situation.

There may be an eating disorder or other medical condition. It could be a traumatic event from their past – maybe a death in the family, physical or emotional abuse, or even abandonment. There could be an emotional trigger, like stress, loneliness, feeling unwanted or unloved.

I’m sure I haven’t covered the entire gamut of what might make a person struggle with their weight, but if it’s YOU that is struggling – if you desire change and you’re working on it, but have only been met with criticism and finger pointing and whispers and snarky remarks from people who haven’t even bothered to get to know you first, I’m writing this post to embrace you with open arms – to acknowledge your situation, your feelings and your struggle.

I can only hope there will be more people who will “see the light” as I have and respect you as well. This type of acceptance might very well spark a greater empowerment for the overweight person to be healed from their past, to experience recovery, or to simply be happy and free to create new, healthy habits without having to deal with other people’s judgmental ignorance.
