Greedy Giveaway! The Quantum Scale (it never shows your weight)

Your shining moment has arrived. No longer will you want to throat-punch the number on the scale. The Quantum Scale gonna fix all that. It will change how you feel about stepping on the scale. Josie gonna tell you how you could win one.

quantum scale Greedy Giveaway! The Quantum Scale (it never shows your weight)

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE QUANTUM SCALE?

Quantum never EVER shows your weight. Once you step on it for the first time, it records your weight on the down-low and secretly stores that data into the scale. No amount of bribery or blackmail will get that scale to divulge your weight. On flipside, what Quantum WILL give you is a plus or minus total of how much weight you lost or gained since the first time you stepped on it. With this special weight tracking being so personal in nature, the scale is designed to be used by one person only. So basically, don’t let yo momma get on the scale. She’ll have to get her own.

The Quantum Scale is on sale for the holidays at a sweet price. Check out the scale demo from the Dr. Oz show, and then scroll down to enter the giveaway…

Set up is insanely easy. I had mine out the box, calibrated and ready for use in about 90-seconds. The instructions in the box are straightforward, plain and clear. The LCD display is without a backlight (deep dark cave dwellers need to know that). Use your scale in a well-lit area. Max weight capacity is 330-lbs.

THE GIVEAWAY (Update 11/30/13: this giveaway is now closed)

quantum scale colors Greedy Giveaway! The Quantum Scale (it never shows your weight)One winner will receive a brand new Quantum Scale in the color of their choice.

HOW TO ENTER

Leave a comment and tell me about the worst, most cheesy-terrible gift you have ever received. I’m nosy and wanna giggle about it. An expired box of chocolates in a beat up package tops the list for me.

**If are a subscriber to my Youtube channel, leave a separate comment with your Youtube name, and you’ll receive an extra entry. Yahoooo!

Your chance to enter ends Friday, November 29th (eastern time). Winner will be selected at random and announced by Sunday, December 1st. United States and Canada entries only. Totally null and void where prohibited.

Wednesday Weigh In: The Scale Has Nothing For Me Today

20130529_weighin

Sometimes I just don’t know how to start a post and this is one of those times.

I’ve been feeling … dare I say it … fat.

Stop rolling your eyes. I know. I know. But sometimes it’s the only word that captures that uncomfortable, thick, unhappy, self-conscious, blah feeling. I’m trying hard to remove the connection in my brain between “fat” and “feelings,” but it’s pretty deep rooted. We’re talking years of dysfunctional thinking here.

The official Tough Mudder Photos were released and like last year, my inner mean girl is really letting loose.

20130918_A

She has me focusing on all the wrong things. Again.

20130918_B

I’m so over listening to her yell about my weight and body size. I really am. Especially when I’m doing things like this.

20130918_C

And this.

20130918_D

And this.

20130918_E

(OMG, I’m STILL freaking out about the Plank and I’ve done it 6 damn times!)

I decided a long time ago that my body is and will be a product of my lifestyle. I refuse to starve myself and focus on particular body parts all in the name of sculpting some perfect body. This is me.

20130918_g

I’m a 37-year-old mom who likes CrossFit, running, and ice cream all way too much. If we can figure out how to add more hours in the day, I’d love to take a yoga class here and there. I’m happily married to a junk-food junkie who brought Doritos to bed last night and supports me in all my crazy adventures. I’m almost always smiling and I consciously work on being happy, grateful and content. It’s not always easy but I’ve learned it’s worth it.  I’m also, apparently, out of focus.

This is my favorite photo they captured.

20130918_F

Not because of the way my body looks, but because when I saw it, the first thing I noticed was my smiling face and it immediately brought back the sense of accomplishment I felt when I crossed that finish line.

I’m sorry I hijacked our Wednesday Weigh In post this week, but I needed to get this out of my head. The scale really doesn’t have anything for me today. I didn’t need to weigh in. I needed to write this post.

Inner mean girl  must not have liked it too much. I can barely hear her now.

Wednesday Weigh In: Thankfully the Scale is Only One Measure …

I won’t say I was excited to get on the scale this morning but I also wasn’t dreading it. I’ve had a great week. #WYCWYC has really motivated me to incorporate more movement throughout the day, I’ve been more in control of my nighttime snack habit, and I’ve stayed true to Operation Breaking Bad Habits getting at least 7 hours a sleep each night (except in Savannah because I was on such a tight schedule.)

Anyway, my point is: I feel GREAT about my week and the scale is not going to tell me otherwise. It’s showing a 0.2 gain but whatever, I rocked it.

20130911_weighin

Oh, well, this is one of those times I have to remind myself it’s SO MUCH more than what that scale says. It’s how I feel and today I feel FANTASTIC.

So, how was your week?

Wednesday Weigh In: Screw You, Scale

First, thank you for all the birthday wishes! I’m sorry I didn’t reply to everyone, it’s been a crazy week!

I wasn’t going to weigh in this morning.

Then I was.

Then I wasn’t.

Then I was.

Then I wasn’t.

Then I checked my email and my new, awesome, Fitbit emailed me a report saying this week I …

Screen shot 2013-07-31 at 7.16.54 AM

According to the numbers I should have lost a pound. So I hopped on the scale curious if my weigh in would actually support the numbers.

It didn’t.

Now mind you I haven’t even had the device a full week so I wasn’t really expecting a loss but I also wasn’t expected an almost 4-pound gain!

20130731_weighin

Now, do I really think I gained 4 lbs?

No I don’t.

There are so many darn variables that go into lowering the number on the scale (notice I didn’t say weight.) It’s not as easy as calories in vs. calories out. Don’t get me wrong, I do think you need to eat less to lose weight. Well, I should say I NEEDED to eat less to lose weight. That is how I did it after all.

But now that I’m in a healthy weight range, training with weights, and maintaining, my scale readings don’t always reward me with a lower number for my efforts and that’s just fine. I know I’ve been rocking it.

I feel GREAT!

Isn’t that what really matters? Why do we let some random scale reading tell us otherwise? It’s so counterproductive!

Anyway, that’s my story this week. I’m not changing a thing, just gonna keep doing what I’m doing.

How are you guys doing? Remember, weigh in with or without numbers below. Can’t wait to read your updates!

That being said, this week I babble on as usual. There’s a doorbell, an echo in my empty office and a synching issue. By far not my best podcast. :(

Wednesday Weigh In: Scale Readings + A Question of the Week

weigh in

This morning I was in a rush taking Little Bean to his first ever Swim Class. For as much as he loves the bath he seems to loathe the pool. I’m hoping this helps.

Anyway, I totally forgot to hop on the scale first thing so this week’s weigh in happened much later in the day. Because of this, I expected a gain. (I was up 1.8lbs.) I get heavier during the day. Well… I don’t REALLY get heavier per se, the scale just gives me a higher “reading.”

And that’s what it is right? A reading. It’s not measuring my value or telling me how I should feel or punishing me for a “bad” week. Nope. I refuse to give it that power. It’s a tool and it gives me a reading. That’s it’s. That’s all.

I know some of you don’t use a scale at all and I totally get that. I think it really depends on what stage your in. I’ve flipped flopped myself but right now I’m weighing in weekly more for curiosity than anything. I’m also finding the scale images I post here on the blog are helping me become callous to the number.

And that brings me to this Week’s Question. It’s similar to one I’ve asked before but I want to do a little experiment, if you are willing. Bear with me, it’s a multi-parter. I think it will be really interesting to see everyone’s responses.

Do you weigh in?If so, what frequency? The experiment: hop on the scale in the morning and then again before bed. What are the readings? How do they make you feel?

I am curious as to your scale habits but I’m really hoping a few of you will do the experiment and share the results to show us how fickle the scale can be. Keep in mind it’s nearly impossible to gain a pound in 12 hours. You’d have to consume more than 3,200 calories and basically spend the day in the bed. Even then you’d probably still not gain a full pound of fat.

Anyone willing to participate?

EatSmart Scale Giveaway! (plus, my personal story of scale obsession)

(If you’re a Finish What You Started Challenger, this week’s “Finish It Monday” message is hitting your Inbox, so watch for it!)

I love EatSmart. Not only because their Precision Digital Bathroom Scale was part of my journey of healing from scale obsession (yup, it’s a real condition), but it they’re a trusted company run by wonderful people. EatSmart has a full line of bathroom scales, plus kitchen scales and a luggage scale that are all reasonably priced, and include a 2-year warranty.

So before I Get To the Giveaway Part: My Story of (former) Scale Obsession

Obsession with anything is a very unhealthy thing. I could NOT stop weighing myself. At the time I had more than 40 pounds to lose. I was shooting to lose 1-pound per week to get to goal weight. Pretty reasonable, right? But is it normal and reasonable to weigh yourself 3-4 times per day?

I hadn’t yet discovered EatSmart. I was using some other scale at the time. It was heavy and clunky and ugly, but I’d drag that dang thing out, strip completely naked, making sure to have already used the potty (uh-huh) in hopes of the best weight loss reading possible.

If my number was neutral or higher, I’d blame water weight or a sammich that hadn’t fully digested yet. I’d even blame a water-logged head of hair if I was fresh out the shower. If my weight was lower, I’d celebrate, but still find an excuse to hop on the scale many more times that day. At this rate, I was weighing in up to 28 times per week.

I’m almost embarrassed to admit this former obsession. It went on like this for close to 2 years before I acknowledged what I had been in deniable about for so long: I was obsessed with the scale. I knew my behavior was not normal. It took many more months before I had the courage to remove the batteries from my scale and stick it in the attic forever. It was sooo liberating to NOT have the ability to weigh in obsessively. After this, about a year passed by and that clunky old scale was still very much out of reach. I was doing okay and continue to drop weight. I could tell from the way my clothes fit.

In December 2010, EatSmart reached out to offer me my 1st scale giveaway. I also received a complimentary scale of my own. This is when I decided that I would not longer hide from any scale by banishing it to the attic. I would take control over my weigh-ins and maintain a healthy relationship with the scale. Keeping an EatSmart around would be the litmus test to show whether or not my old weigh-in habits had truly changed.

So did I go back to obsessing? Well, yes. I did for awhile. I had some ups and downs. It took effort and continued practice in self control over NOT weigh-in with the scale in plain view. But it got easier and easier over time. And now? I only weigh-in about every 1-2 months. Victory!

A major part of my recovery from scale obsession involved having the courage to keep my EatSmart around – not hiding from it. The other part of my healing involved ditching a goal weight and embracing non-scale victories like losing dress sizes, looking sexier in photographs (yeah baby!), making good food choices and simply having a healthy lifestyle mentality, NOT a “weight loss mentality” which very much obsesses over numbers.

There is more to our weight loss journey than the number on the scale. Do NOT use your scale as the absolute law that tells the entire story of your fitness efforts. A lot of people do that and it’s wrong. Instead, use your scale as a partner and tool in your journey. Use it to attest to your progress over longer periods of time.

I’ve lost over 16-pounds since March 2011. My EatSmart scale told me so. And it didn’t involve weighing in every week. I’ve only weighed-in about 5 times since March.

"This scale is a great bargain for the price. It has every feature that was important to me. Love the wide platform for ease in getting on and off the scale, the fact that it comes on instantly when stepped on instead of being tapped on, and the big bright display is so easy to read. Thrilled with my purchase, and would highly recommend this product." -- Holly Jo (VA)

"It's weird how little things make a big difference when you are on a diet. My husband got me this scale as a motivator (I was doing infrequent weighings at the gym) and boy has it done the trick. It's pretty, has a wide platform and is easy to read. But the only thing I really care about is the fact that it's accurate and consistent. Have never questioned one weight I have gotten. Awesome product." -- Snuggie Love 2010 (VA)

N(o) S(cale) V(ictory)!

Please to read this post as merely my experiences and thoughts.

Im an avowed NON-WEIGHER (I encourage you to take a moment & skim that post if you havent before so you know where Im coming from).

It’s what works for me.

I weigh once a year, at the doctors, needed or not.

I do “say” I have a pair of jeans I use as a barometer (they should totally fit without my needing to be UBERactive or ANYkinda”dieting”)—-but to be completely candid I havent yanked those out of the closet in eons.

In fact Im not even sure I own them any more.

If Im honest with myself I know when Ive gained a few pounds and, as long as the weight-gain is in joy and not in feeding a feeling, Im pretty damn ok with that.

If Im feeling as though Im not ok with it (read: wanting to shed the excess el bees) I simply pay a little more attention to my PLAYouts & (*gasp*) perhaps add in a modicum of work/ratchet back the play a tad.

(that would be the plan anyway. These days at 41 & 10 months I’m just happy to be here & healthy.  I may be a little too filled with self-acceptance —flaws and all—but you’ll have that as you age or I hope you do, too.)

But I digress.

What I really wanted to share is this story:

A few weeks ago the Tornado & I went to visit a friend at her new house.

After a we played for a while the Tornado needed to pee pee potty use the restroom.

We went into the master bathroom and, after exploring my friend’s treasures for a bit, she spotted something on the floor.

“What’s that mama?” I heard her ask.  “Is that what you step on to get into the shower?”

I looked over to see what she was pointing to and saw that it was a bathroom scale.

In that moment it occurred to me (truly as a shock) she’d never ever seen one before!

She’s been weighed at the doctors office.  She’s been with me when Ive been weighed at my doctors office.

Neither of those scales look like the kind my friend had for (finger quote) home use (un FQ).

Thankfully, in her inimitable pre-schooler way, she was off and breaking stuff exploring my friend’s counter top-treasures before I could decide how to respond to her.

Should I tell her some people like to weigh themselves more than one time a year?

What reasons should I give and would she, too, want to own a scale for home?

You know what—–I just left it at that.

It seems these days that childhood is so ephemeral.

8 year olds read these books and talk about blowjobs sexual stuff when at least  this misfit thinks they should still be hula hooping & playing Harriet the Spy.

Im pretty confident she will figure out soon enough precisely what that was in my friends bathroom.

And, if until then, she believes  it’s a stepping stone to the shower stall (I love I love)—-this mamas all about encouraging that erroneous belief as well.

It’s the misfit way I roll.

And you?

I know our Healthy Living Tribe goes back and forth on the use of the scale for US.

What would you had said to the Tornado were she YOUR child?

Please to hit us all up in the comments below…

EatSmart Precision GoFit Digital Body Fat Scale w/ 400 lb. Capacity & Auto Recognition Technology

EatSmart Precision GoFit Digital Body Fat Scale w/ 400 lb. Capacity & Auto Recognition Technology

The EatSmart Precision GoFit is not your ordinary bathroom scale as it can quickly and easily measure weight, body fat, body water, body muscle and bone mass using our new ITO BIA technology. This scale is perfect for individuals who are serious about taking control of their health.

BIA (Bio-Electrical Impedance Analysis) technology allows you to easily calculate your body fitness by imputing information of gender, height, age, activity level and your weight. In bare feet, this technology sends a low-level electrical signal though your body fat and then measures the resistance the signal encounters. This signal is perfectly safe and will not be felt.

The Precision GoFit Scale stores up to 8 different users' personal profiles and will be able to recognize these users as soon as they step onto the scale. This auto recognition software makes it simple to operate, since all you have to do is stand on the platform barefoot and it identifies who you are based on past weight. Not having to select a user gives it the same functionality as a basic bathroom scale with added benefit of % body fat, % body muscle, % body water and bone mass.

Let's not forget about its universal EatSmart features! The Precision GoFit uses "Step-On" technology which means no more tapping to turn on your scale. It measures up to 400lbs and will display an accurate readout to the nearest .2 lbs on the oversized 3.5" LCD display. Its sleek design and slim profile fits perfectly into any surrounding. The touch screen interface makes it one of the most user friendly bathroom scales on the market today.

Along with your Precision GoFit, you receive our easy to follow Instruction Manual (which also defines body fat, body water, body muscle and bone mass) and 4 AAA batteries.
