Wednesday Weigh in, a Food Journal from Mom’s, and My Personal Weight Loss Rant

I may be weird but I actually enjoy traveling with the kids, alone. Don’t get me wrong, it has it’s challenges but I look at it as bonding time with my babies. Today we had 4 hours of signing in the car, talking about school, snacking on popcorn, and just being goofballs…

I used to like it when it was just Ryan and I. Having Evan now just feels like a bonus. I get all the fun toddler-ness with an older helping hand. I’m glad I decided on 2 and even happier it took me 5 years to realize it was the right choice.

Anyway, we are here at Mom’s now, but before I left, I jumped on the scale.

Down just over a pound since last week! I plan on continuing this trend. I’m tired of playing with the same 4 pounds when I have 5 more to lose to reach MY GOAL. I’m tired of the slightly snug pants. I’m tired of feeling guilty about wanting to lose because I’m suppose to be happy with the body I’m in.

That may sound "off" but hear me out. I am happy and proud of myself for the last 7 years. I’m not the same person I used to be. I’m not ashamed of my body. I don’t shy away from doing things I want to do because of a bad body image. I’m not stuck in the yo-yo dieting cycle of hell. I’m super active. I run. I play. I swim. I just wore a bathing suit at the public pool without a t-shirt!

I know.. crazy, right? I just had a baby too! Well, not "just" but 15 months ago I was 3 days postpartum and about 30 pounds heavier than I am right now. Seven years ago when I started this journey I was 57 pounds heavier than I am right now. For Pete’s sake, 12 years ago when I graduated college I was carrying 70 more pounds than I am right now.

I’m doing this. I’m managing it.

I. am. a. maintainer!

However, part of me has been struggling these last few months because of the pressure I’m putting on myself NOT to lose weight but to be an example of a healthy body image. Then I realized… I can do both. Actually, if you read my "3 Steps" you know how I feel about self-acceptance and how invaluable it is to weight loss.

Now don’t stone me, I know this is kind of the opposite of what I said in My Weight Loss A-Ha Moment. I’ll obnoxiously quote myself again,

I am now someone who doesn’t care what the scale says because of everything listed above <–THAT was My A-Ha Moment.

Here’s the thing and this may not come out right so bear with me….

I don’t really care about the number on the scale but it is the easiest tool to measure success for me right now (not always, but right now.) IF I weighed what I weigh now and all my clothes fit the way they used to, I could care less what it said (someone asked me that in a comment recently and it really stuck with me.) However, I have not hit my goal of reaching my pre-pregnancy weight and I can’t help but think doing so will make the difference.

So, can I promote a healthy body image while actively trying to lose weight? I think so. You may not agree. This is actually quite a hot topic and one we will be discussing at FitBloggin this year. You should join us! <–shameless plug

Anyway, I didn’t mean to go on a tangent. Here’s today’s food journal. I’m going to shut up now. It’s late and I’m rambling.

1 egg/1 egg white omelet with onion, zucchini and hamI love changing up my eggs for breakfastI was in for a long road trip this is how a ward off junky options from gas stations and drive thrus. McDs Southwestern grill salad sans-dressing + a small coneWe stopped for lunch, see photo above. I skipped all fries but one and opted for a cone instead. slightly addicted here. Dinner at Moms: grilled tilapia, chickpea salad, baked beans, roasted potatoes and watermelon for dessert So nice to have someone cook for me for a change! I know, it was a popcorn kind of day but Mom’s has a lot of temptations. This is, again, how I ward them off. Nothing official just some fun pool time with the kids. Let me tell you running laps to make a whirlpool is a seriously hard work! The travel got me. I’m feeling a little dehydrated today. Gonna grab an extra glass before bed.

The personal post: call & response.

(…because what’s more personal than a pic of me wearing an adult onesie?)

The past few holidayweeks Ive received more emails asking about my personal life…my day-to-day…than about my workout routine.

(tis the season? it seems people ask more questions about how I hangout during the holidays than how I stay healthy.  come January, however, it’s an entirely different story.)

When we’ve met real life & via email you’ve asked about Ren Man, what he’s like, and why he never guest posts or appears on my blog (he has–but it was a while ago.)

For that reason I wanted to share the two 20 second video clips below.

For that reason and for another very important one: I dont really make New Years resolutions.*

I prefer to take this time to STOP, PAUSE, and APPRECIATE all I have.  Right now. In this moment. If nothing ever changed.

(translation: there wont be any Top 8934839 Tips to Creating the Perfect New Year’s Resolution posts around here)

The clips below capture every.single.thing. about my life that makes me smile & serve to remind me (after 18 years together) why I married the man I did.

The snippets are from a week or so ago.

Ren Man was on a longass trip to London and the Tornado missed him.

A lot.

She spontaneously picked up an inflatable guitar, demanded I film her (vlogger in the making?) & send the snippet to her dad.

I did.

In minutes my phone buzzed and we had a response.

A VIDEO response.

What made me SMILE was the immediacy of it all.  Id barely hit SEND, shot her vid across the pond and we received the singingsnippet below.

I often tell people Ive met one man in my life who could make me laugh (hard from the belly. repeatedly.) and so I married him.

The clips below capture everything I love and am grateful for this holiday season.

Thank you for indulging me.

*I’m a firm believer in the notion goals are dreams with timelines. Instead of resolving I merely shove timelines up against my goals.

Personal First Aid Kit (AKA the return of the cowboy hat).

Once upon a time I yammered about the importance of first aid kits.

I was kindasorta a new mom and as a result BLANKETED the domicile (and car) with tiny kits crammed with ‘saving’ devices.

Bandages. Medicine. Tweezers. Ointments. Ice pack thingies. Heat packs. Surgical tape.

You name the medical crap & I had it jammed into a huge Ziplock and at the ready.

And then the Tornado left me for the Garten of the Kinder.

I found myself flying solo after years with a perpetual sidekick & realized I’d forgotten to create the most important kit of all: my personal first aid kit.

While of course Im crazy enough to fret Im going to fall, break a hip & since I work from home there will be no one around to call 911  I probably still could benefit from the other ‘kits— more than ever I needed an emotional first aid kit.

You see, without my noticing the Tornado had become my walking talking Personal First Aid device.

If I felt sad I merely needed a glance over at  this to perk me right up:

If I felt “less than’ or unsuccessful in my world of work this always slammed everything back into proper perspective:

Short of driving to school & stealing her away each time I feel the frazzle (something which sounded initially like a viable option) I decided my best option was to revisit/recreate my Personal First Aid kit.

AKA Self-Preservation in a COWBOY hat.

What are a some items you reflexively know you’d place in your Personal First Aid Kit?

What self-love/self-care container would you plop the whole thing into?

Wanna lie to me normalize my addiction and tell me your P.F.A. Kit would contain beef jerky too?

Wanna know what NoMoreBacon would put in HIS P.F.A. Kit? Ive dragged him along for the ride

**It bears stating A Million Miles in a Thousand Years would be in my personal first aid kit were it not something I read and refer to every.single.day.

EatSmart Scale Giveaway! (plus, my personal story of scale obsession)

(If you’re a Finish What You Started Challenger, this week’s “Finish It Monday” message is hitting your Inbox, so watch for it!)

I love EatSmart. Not only because their Precision Digital Bathroom Scale was part of my journey of healing from scale obsession (yup, it’s a real condition), but it they’re a trusted company run by wonderful people. EatSmart has a full line of bathroom scales, plus kitchen scales and a luggage scale that are all reasonably priced, and include a 2-year warranty.

So before I Get To the Giveaway Part: My Story of (former) Scale Obsession

Obsession with anything is a very unhealthy thing. I could NOT stop weighing myself. At the time I had more than 40 pounds to lose. I was shooting to lose 1-pound per week to get to goal weight. Pretty reasonable, right? But is it normal and reasonable to weigh yourself 3-4 times per day?

I hadn’t yet discovered EatSmart. I was using some other scale at the time. It was heavy and clunky and ugly, but I’d drag that dang thing out, strip completely naked, making sure to have already used the potty (uh-huh) in hopes of the best weight loss reading possible.

If my number was neutral or higher, I’d blame water weight or a sammich that hadn’t fully digested yet. I’d even blame a water-logged head of hair if I was fresh out the shower. If my weight was lower, I’d celebrate, but still find an excuse to hop on the scale many more times that day. At this rate, I was weighing in up to 28 times per week.

I’m almost embarrassed to admit this former obsession. It went on like this for close to 2 years before I acknowledged what I had been in deniable about for so long: I was obsessed with the scale. I knew my behavior was not normal. It took many more months before I had the courage to remove the batteries from my scale and stick it in the attic forever. It was sooo liberating to NOT have the ability to weigh in obsessively. After this, about a year passed by and that clunky old scale was still very much out of reach. I was doing okay and continue to drop weight. I could tell from the way my clothes fit.

In December 2010, EatSmart reached out to offer me my 1st scale giveaway. I also received a complimentary scale of my own. This is when I decided that I would not longer hide from any scale by banishing it to the attic. I would take control over my weigh-ins and maintain a healthy relationship with the scale. Keeping an EatSmart around would be the litmus test to show whether or not my old weigh-in habits had truly changed.

So did I go back to obsessing? Well, yes. I did for awhile. I had some ups and downs. It took effort and continued practice in self control over NOT weigh-in with the scale in plain view. But it got easier and easier over time. And now? I only weigh-in about every 1-2 months. Victory!

A major part of my recovery from scale obsession involved having the courage to keep my EatSmart around – not hiding from it. The other part of my healing involved ditching a goal weight and embracing non-scale victories like losing dress sizes, looking sexier in photographs (yeah baby!), making good food choices and simply having a healthy lifestyle mentality, NOT a “weight loss mentality” which very much obsesses over numbers.

There is more to our weight loss journey than the number on the scale. Do NOT use your scale as the absolute law that tells the entire story of your fitness efforts. A lot of people do that and it’s wrong. Instead, use your scale as a partner and tool in your journey. Use it to attest to your progress over longer periods of time.

I’ve lost over 16-pounds since March 2011. My EatSmart scale told me so. And it didn’t involve weighing in every week. I’ve only weighed-in about 5 times since March.

The Giveaway

Two (2) winners will each receive an EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale courtesy of EatSmart Products (you lucky peeps) AND a Shakeology Sampler 2-pack, courtesy of yours truly.

Required Entry: Leave a comment and tell us all how aim to maintain a healthy relationship with the scale.

*Bonus Entry: Get your booty on over to Twitter and tweet @EatSmart your fitness goals using the hashtag #HappyScale. They’ll been tickled to hear from you and I’ll also be following that hashtag, so join in!

Your chance to win ends Friday, 10/7/11. Winner announced on or before 10/10/11 on the top right sidebar. United States entries only. Totally null and void where prohibited.

Ready? Set. EatSmart!

Your Personal Best Workout [VHS]

Your Personal Best Workout [VHS]This video misrepresents itself. Although the title is Low Impact Aerobics, it is not low impact. The cardio intervals include jogging, jumping jacks, and other moves with hops. This is a 65-minute reissue of a 1988 video that features Janet Jones-Gretzky, who is so slim that you can count her ribs through her white leotard, leading a class of fit, gorgeous exercisers (female and male). This aerobic interval workout combines fast cardio (no patterns) with more controlled cardio plus weights, though still at a fast pace. We've learned a lot about exercise since 1988, and these two-second reps with weights are not as effective as slower reps. They are also more likely to lead to injury. Although the video is targeted to all levels, unless you're an experienced exerciser, it's too easy to lose correct form when you're doing such fast reps and aerobic moves at the same time. You might find the weight intervals repetitious (tons of lunges and shoulder presses). A floor-work segment uses ankle weights, followed by a stretch. Unless you miss the old Firm workouts, choose one that is more up to date (and therefore safer and more effective). --Joan Price

2 Fun Personal Announcements RE: Weight Watchers

I really should be in bed but I’ve been wanting to share this news for days!

I landed my first Spokesperson job! ME? a Spokesperson. I’m scared, ecstatic and intrigued at the same time. I’m learning how this whole industry ticks and it’s utterly fascinating for this traditional worker bee.

Here’s the details… I’ve been asked to help on a campaign for Weight Watchers Ice cream. They are sending a camera crew to record a video at my house AND I’ll be doing a radio media tour in January! How fun is that?!? You guys KNOW how I feel about ice cream. ;)

I should note that Weight Watchers and Weight Watchers Ice Cream are two completely separate companies. They are NOT one in the same which actually brings me to my second announcement.

Apparently being honest does pay. I really thought Weight Watchers would want nothing to do with me after giving my initial opinions on the new program. I’m not one to hold anything back and I still have a lot of questions about PointsPlus. But as with anything, I’m willing to learn, experiment and give my thoughts. Apparently Weight Watchers is willing to listen. They have asked me to become an "Insider." According to them,

"The Insiders comprises a group of prominent bloggers who focus on health and lifestyle and have loyal readers who would appreciate hearing about the latest Weight Watchers news."

They are giving me access to eTools (I can’t wait to get in there and check it out!) and will be sending me news about the new PointsPlus program.

Weight Watchers really did help me change my life and I’ve been a fan of theirs for sometimes. I even applied to work there a few years ago. Not as a leader (although I would love to do that) but at a higher capacity. I’m not one to be a corporate minion so I’m probably better off on my own but I welcome the opportunity to work with companies in my niche, especially ones that have had such an impact on me personally.

So that’s it. That’s my big news. Nothing real earth shattering but exciting to me all the same. These are the kinds of opportunities I wouldn’t get to explore while working full time. I may not be bringing home a steady paycheck anymore but I’m happier spending more time at home and having fun working for myself.

OK, I need sleep. I have a breakfast date with a 5 year old. :)
