Smartfood Selects Hummus Popped Chips (Garlic Tomato Basil) Review

Smartfood Selects Hummus Popped Chips (Garlic Tomato Basil)

Hummus chips are new to me, so when I saw Smartfood Selects Garlic Tomato Basil Hummus Popped Chips I had to pick up a bag (92.1 grams) which cost $3.49. The packaging says that "By roasting the garlic in this hummus-based popped chip, we've caramelized it's natural sugars to give it a sweet flavor. Parmesan, tomato, basil and thyme supplement the garlic in this scrumptious, smart combination."

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 16 chips, 28 grams
Calories: 130
Total Fat: 5 grams, 8%
Saturated Fat: 0.5 grams, 3%
Sodium: 160 mg, 7%
Carbohydrates: 18 grams, 6%
Fiber: 3 grams, 11%
Sugars: 2 grams
Protein: 3 grams

The round crisps have a nice crunch to them. They are slightly garlicky and taste of the herbal seasoning, and they aren't too spicy. This brand is more expensive than some others, but well worth it if you're crave salty snacks like I do. Each serving of 16 chips provides 130 calories, 5 grams of total fat (8% of the daily value), 160 mg of sodium (7% of the DV), 3 grams of fiber (11% of the DV), 2 grams of sugars and 3 grams of protein.

The packaging of Smartfood Selects Garlic Tomato Basil Hummus Popped Chips says that the chips are "All Natural." The ingredients list though is rather lengthy, although all the components are commonplace.

I enjoyed Smartfood Selects Garlic Tomato Basil Hummus Popped Chips and would buy it again. Of course, if you look through our Chip Reviews, there are quite a few others that I like as well - like Stacys Simply Naked Bagel Chips and Route 11 Sweet Potato Chips.

Trader Joe’s roasted plantain chips are the shizzle.

photo 4 Trader Joes roasted plantain chips are the shizzle.

Do ya feel like noshing? Interested in a short bout of mindless munching? Do you require salty & crunchy without adding a layer of fat-padding to your butt cheeks?

It was only after I ate an entire bag of plantain chips from the Asian corner market, that I realized… Oh snap! These plantain chips are fried! What have I done!?

There was much horror and agony that followed this fried food revelation. Yet that accidental event of gnawing on an entire bag of fried treats began my search for a ROASTED plantain chip.

chips Trader Joes roasted plantain chips are the shizzle.Alas! My stomach’s prayers have been answered. I’m too lazy to make the chips from scratch. The last fresh plantain I bought rotted at the bottom of a bowl of fancily displayed apples on the kitchen counter. Gonna keep snagging the Trader Joe’s Roasted Plantain Chips instead. I recently purchased my 4th bag.

Ingredients: plantains, sunflower oil & salt. That’s it.Calories: 140 for 20 chipsSodium: 50mgSugars: 0g

Plantain health benefits.

The chips are thick — not ultra thin like “normal chips”, and provide instant satisfaction without all the ruckus of slicing the plantain, using up your precious time (when you could be couch-azzing), and waiting for it to roast. Ain’t nobody got time fo’ dat!

But I’m really mad at Amazon. They overcharge for these chips like a mo-fo. We’re talking a 200% markup!

I am a lover of Amazon (a shopaholic even), and I often direct you to products I recommend that are listed on their site, but the Amazon pricing for TJ’s chips is downright rude…

$1.99 per bag at the store breaks down to $5.99 per bag if you buy on Amazon. Huh?

Trader Joe's Roasted Plantain Chips" target="_blank">chips price Trader Joes roasted plantain chips are the shizzle.

I (attempted) to write a product review on their site to complain about the unfair pricing, but I got an email back within minutes that my review didn’t meet their community guidelines. The review was real respectable and non-volatile. I didn’t even cuss or anything. What the hell?

If you don’t have a Trader Joe’s nearby, feel free to not be lazy like me and roast the chips from scratch. Just slice ‘em thin using a non-ripe plantain, toss in a tiny bit of olive oil, sprinkle with salt (or sea salt, if your fancy), and then roast them up until roasty.

The salty-crunchy experience will bring ginormous satisfaction to your chewing jaws. If plantains just aren’t your thing, you could always try homemade kale chips instead. They’re real tasty ‘n stuff.

Ever try plantain chips or kale chips? Don’t miss the boat on this healthy snacktopia of deliciousness!

Green Giant Roasted Veggie Tortilla Chips (Zesty Cheddar) Review

Reviewed by Tanya Patrice | May 2, 2013

Green Giant Roasted Veggie Tortilla Chips

Green Giant is now in the snack aisle with their vegetable based chips. A few weeks ago, I tried the Green Giant Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips, but they also sent me a sample of Green Giant Roasted Veggie Zesty Cheddar Tortilla Chips, which I recently tried.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 10 chips (28 grams)
Calories: 140
Total Fat: 7 grams, 11%
Saturated Fat: 0.5 grams, 3%
Sodium: 190 mg, 8%
Carbohydrates: 18 grams, 6%
Fiber: 1 gram, 4%
Sugars: 2 grams
Protein: 2 grams

I must say I much prefer these tortilla chips to the sweet potato ones. They seem more flavorful, and had a healthy serving of "zesty cheddar." In fact they reminded me a lot of Doritos Nacho Cheese, but I actually prefer the Green Giant Roasted Veggie Zesty Cheddar Tortilla Chips.

Most people wouldn't consider Doritos healthy, but the nutrition facts for Green Giant Roasted Veggie Zesty Cheddar Tortilla Chips aren't much different. Each 28 gram serving (about 10 chips) provides 140 calories, 7 grams of total fat, 0.5 grams of which is saturated (11% and 3% of the daily value), 190 mg sodium (8% of the DV), 1 gram of fiber, 2 grams of proteins and sugars. Doritos has a little more saturated fat, but everything else is very similar.

The ingredients list is rather lengthy (way too much for me to try and type out), and it starts with whole grain corn, sunflower oil ad dried re and green bell peppers. All the other components are present at less than 2%. With a brand like "Green Giant" I associate it with wholesome products, so even for chips - I don't expect to see artificial colors like Yellow 6 Lake and Yellow 5 Lake or partially hydrogenated soybean oil, which doesn't add enough trans fat to be shown on the label (i.e. less than 0.5 grams).

So, I doubt that I'll be on the lookout for these chips in my supermarket.

Route 11 Sweet Potato Chips Review

Route 11 Sweet Potato Chips

Potato chips are looked at like the devil's spawn because of the high fat & low nutritional value - so are other types of chips more ... wholesome? Well, when I saw Route 11 Sweet Potato Chips at the grocery store recently, I decided to check it out to see if these were any better than regular potato chips. The packaging says these chips are lightly salted, all natural, wheat and gluten free plus made using all natural sea salt.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 28 grams
Calories: 140
Total Fat: 7 grams, 11%
Saturated Fat: 1 gram, 5%
Sodium: 55 mg, 2%
Carbohydrates: 19 grams
Fiber: 2 grams, 8%
Sugars: 4 grams
Protein: 2 grams

These chips certainly are mighty tasty. They're sturdy yet crunchy, and are slightly sweet and slightly salty at the same time - it sounds like an odd combo, but somehow it all works together and a yummy chip is the result.

Each 1 ounce (28 gram) serving of Route 11 Sweet Potato Chips provides 140 calories, 7 grams of total fat (11% of the daily value), 1 gram of which is saturated fat (5% of the DV), 55 mg sodium (6% of the DV), 4 grams of sugars, 2 grams of fiber and 2 grams of protein. Plus there is 120% of the daily value for vitamin A. When you compare these chips to Lays (Classic) Potato Chips, they come out on top. A 28 gram serving of Lays provides 160 calories, 10 grams of total fat (16% of the daily value) and 170 mg of sodium.

The ingredients are simply sweet potatoes, peanut oil and/or high monounsaturated sunflower oil and Real Salt (sea salt). I bought a 42 gram bag of Route 11 Sweet Potato Chips - unfortunately, that is 1.5 servings, meaining 16% of the daily value for total fat - definitely something to watch out for.

So nutritionally, I would prefer these sweet potato chips over a bag of Lays Classic Potato Chips, but something like Glenny's Sea Salt Spud Delites Review has less calories and fat, and is just as tasty.

Have you tried sweet potato chips before? Did you like it?

Popcorners Popped Corn Chips (Kettle) Review

Popcorners Popped Corn Chips (Kettle)

Popcorn in a chip? That's what Popcorners says their chips are like, so I picked up a bag of the all natural and gluten free Popcorners (Kettle) Popped Corn Chips when I saw it at the grocery store a few days ago.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 8 ounces
Calories: 120
Total Fat: 3.5 grams, 5%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: 105 mg, 4%
Carbohydrates: 21 grams
Fiber: 1 gram, 3%
Sugars: 2 grams
Protein: 2 grams

The "popped, not fried or baked" chips are flat, crunchy and triangular shaped (like Food Should Taste Good Cinnamon Tortilla Chips (Review) - but not as thin & crispy). The taste is sweet & salty at the same time, and the texture is like Popchips - crunchy and slightly airy. I enjoyed it more and more as I ate more and more, and the kids, picky as they are about my "review stuff", really liked it as well.

Each 28 gram serving of Popcorners Kettle Popped Corn Chips provides 120 calories, 3.5 grams of total fat (5% of the daily value), no saturated fat, 105 mg of sodium (4% of the DV), 2 grams of protein, 2 grams of sugars and 1 gram of fiber.

The ingredients in Popcorners (Kettle) Popped Corn Chips are, enriched yellow corn (yellow corn, niacin, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), sunflower oil, sugar, sea salt. I purchased a 5 ounce (142 gram) bag for $1.99, and would definitely buy this again - about the same calories as a serving of potato chips, but less fat & sodium makes this a winner.

Enter Into The World of Kale Chips Splendor

I’ve been doing it all week. As soon as I get in the door after work and maneuver through the child-obstacles, I get right into the kitchen and bake me up some kale chips. These things have been keeping me from a bad case of Pre-Dinner Greediness Disease all week.

The day before my first batch of kale chips, I had eaten an entire sleeve of Ritz Crackers before dinner. So do ya get me? I’ve probably saved myself a good 800 calories this week by whipping up some kale chips instead of grazing mindlessly on other stuff. Kale chips’ crunchy-saltiness is perfect for satisfying me before dinner. It does the trick, yo!

And you gotta check out kale’s profile on World Healthiest Foods. It’s mind boggling how nutrient-pack it is. I even like to chomp on kale raw and uncooked. And it’s only 36 calories for one cup!

So here’s what you do to make the Kale Chips.

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.Tear kale into pieces (unless you buy a bag of kale that’s already cut up). Some people pick the leaves off the stem, but I think it’s just fine with the stem on. I eat that part, too. You decide for yourself.Dump 3 generous handfuls of kale into a large mixing bowl. Be sure to include enough kale, because (just like spinach) the kale shrinks down when heated.Drizzle approximately 2-3 tsp olive oil onto the kale and then salt to taste. Mix it all up by tossing with your hands or some other leaf-tossing object. If you find the leaves are a bit too oily or salty, just add more kale to compensate. Problem solved. But be careful not to over-oil, because the final product won’t come out right.Transfer kale onto cookie sheet(s).

My pre-baked kale, oil-drizzled and lightly salted.

Bake for approx 15-20 minutes. Exact cooking time depends on your oven, so check the kale after 15 minutes to determine if they’re crispy yet. But not burnt!

Crispy, salty delight!

You can also get fancy and sprinkle your kale with Parmesan or other seasonings, but my fanciness ratio isn’t high enough, because I haven’t done that yet. Special thanks to Coco for inspiring me to take the Kale Chips plunge. Go see how her batch of kale chips turned out. BOOM!

Athenos Baked Pita Chips (Original) Review

Athenos Baked Pita Chips

The front of the packaging of Athenos (Original) Baked Pita Chips has a bright blue sticker on it that reads, "50% less fat than the leading potato chips." Well, since crispy snacks like potato chips are my weakness, I only too happily threw this product in my grocery cart to try it out.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 28 grams (11 chips)
Calories: 120
Total Fat: 4 grams, 6%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: 270 mg, 11%
Carbohydrates: 19 grams
Fiber: 2 grams, 8%
Sugars: < 1 gram
Protein: 3 grams

Their website describes Athenos (Original) Baked Pita Chips as "the ultimate dipping chip ... made from freshly baked pita bread, baked and seasoned to perfection ... with 50% less fat than the leading brand of potato chips and no cholesterol." What I found was a tasty, golden brown, sturdy pita chip, so good for the eatin'. Not too salty, not not too oily and just as good as World Classics Trading Company Sea Salt Baked Pita Chips (Review). My problem was when it's hard to eat just one serving, which is about 11 chips (28 grams).

Each serving provides 120 calories, 4 grams of total fat (6% of the daily value), no saturated or trans fats, 270 mg sodium (11% of the DV), 2 grams of fiber (8% of the DV), less than 1 gram of sugars and 3 grams of protein.

Coupons.com

The ingredients list of Athenos (Original) Baked Pita Chips reads wheat flour, sunflower oil, salt, sugar, yeast, with ascorbic acid, rosemary extract and citric acid to preserve freshness. To overcome my problem of eating more than 1 serving at a time, I started having with StarKist Solid White Albacore Tuna in Water (Review) - lots of protein and crunch to make a nutritious snack.

A 9 ounce bag (255 grams) cost me $2.50, and I would buy these instead of regular potato chips any day of the week.

Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals Cracker Chips (Simply Multi-Grain) Review

As I was checking out all the goodies in the supermarket aisle, I came across Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals Simply Multi-Grain Cracker Chips. I remember reviewing Special K Cracker Chips recently, so I wondered if this would be similar. On the PF website, this is described as, "the next best thing in snacking. All the goodness of a whole grain cracker baked into a crunchy little chip ... one tasty combination! With 60% less fat than the leading potato chip and all the delicious flavor you crave, go ahead and crunch naturally."

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 30 grams (27 pieces)
Calories: 140
Total Fat: 4 grams, 6%
Saturated Fat: 0.5 grams, 3%
Sodium: 210 mg, 9%
Carbohydrates: 24 grams
Fiber: 2 grams, 8%
Sugars: 3 grams
Protein: 1 gram

What I found is that this is very different from Special K Cracker Chips in both taste and texture. The Pepperidge Farms Multi-Grain Cracker Chips are smaller, thinner, rectangular in shape but curvy on one side - whereas the Special K ones were like round discs. The PF Cracker Chips are pretty sturdy, salty, yet with a subtly sweet multi-grain taste. I really liked them and could definitely see myself eating this instead of potato chips.

Each serving of Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals Simply Multi-Grain Cracker Chips provides 140 calories from 4 grams of saturated fat, 0.5 grams of which is saturated (6% and 3% of the daily value), 210 mg of sodium (9% of the DV), 2 grams of fiber, 3 grams of sugars and 1 gram of protein.

Coupons.com

The ingredients list starts with corn flour, vegetable oils, wheat and brown sugar. On the front of the packaging, this states that this has 60% less fat than the leading potato chip. I don't know what the leading potato chip is, but this does indeed have 60% less fat than Lays Classic Potato Chips BUT also more ingredients (including things like monocalcium phosphate and sodium acid pyrophosphate), whereas for Lays it's simply potatoes, vegetable oils and salt. That's something to think about - is the purity of the ingredients more important than 6 grams more of total fat, especially since Lays only has 0.5 grams more saturated fat? Or maybe you don't eat chips or "cracker chips" at all.

I purchased a bag of Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals Simply Multi-Grain Cracker Chips for $2.49 and I would buy it again. I didn't run through these like I would have potato chips.

Special K Cracker Chips (Sea Salt) Review

Special K Cracker Chips (Sea Salt)

Curiosity got hold of me when I spotted Special K Sea Salt Cracker Chips in the supermarket aisle. I wondered what a hybrid "cracker chip" would taste like ... and the proclamation of "30 great tasting chips for 110 calories" on the front of the box of these baked snacks, made it even more intriguing.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 30 grams
Calories: 110
Total Fat: 2.5 grams, 4%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: 230 mg, 10%
Carbohydrates: 23 grams
Fiber: 3 grams, 12%
Sugar: < 1 gram
Protein: 2 grams

First thing I did after buying a box was check out what a "cracker chip" looked like. The shape was oval - reminded me of Orville Redenbacher's Caramel Mini Smart Cakes, but the texture was smoother. The taste was not quite as salty as a chip, but it had the a similar heartiness to Baked Lays Potato Chips. I liked the taste, although it is a little different and takes a bit of getting used to. A serving size of 30 chips is quite adequate.

Each serving of Special K Sea Salt Cracker Chips provides 110 calories, 2.5 grams of total fat (4% of the daily value), no saturated or trans fat, 230 mg of sodium (10% of the DV), 3 grams of fiber (12% of the DV), 2 grams of protein and less than 1 gram of sugars.

Workout Music Playlists at IntheGym.net

The ingredient list starts with potatoes, potato stardh & long grain brown rice flour, and is not too lengthy, with easily recognizeable ingredients. I picked up a 4 ounce box for $2.00 (on sale), and I would buy these again just to have around. The taste is not the greatest, but the nutrition facts more than makes up for it - and I could definitely get used to having this around, as well as feel comfortable giving this to the kids as a snack.

The Beauty of One Ingredient: Coconut Water
Vita Coco is about hydration, and hydration is important no matter what you do. So while other beverages claim to be the before-, during-, and after-sports hydrator, Vita Coco is the hydrator made without added sugars, artificial sweeteners, or pick-me-ups.

In fact, the beauty of Vita Coco is that it's made with 100% pure coconut water from young, green Brazilian coconuts. (Okay, so this variety pack also includes 100-pure coconut water with splashes of pure fruit -- including tangerine, peach mango, pineapple, and passion fruit -- for 100% pure, flavorful goodness.

The coconuts that are used to make Vita Coco drinks are young, green coconuts -- each one cracked by hand -- from northern Brazil that have an average age of about seven months, which is the best age to extract coconut water because it's still fat-free.

Hydrate Naturally with Five Essential Electrolytes
Sure, you may not be a marathon runner, a football player or Tour de France winner, but your every day life is hectic enough--you should be hydrated while you live it. Go ahead, get hydrated and remember that life is a sport!

Loaded with the five essential electrolytes that your body craves -- including potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium and phosphorous -- Vita Coco has what it takes to keep you hydrated and refreshed throughout your busy day.

In fact, each serving of Vita Coco has more electrolytes and 15 times more potassium than the leading sports drink, and more potassium than two bananas (about 700 mg of potassium is in each 11.2-ounce serving size). These electrolytes work to keep the body cool, help boost poor circulation, replenish your body's fluids after exercising, and aid in the detoxification process while boosting your immune system.

This cholesterol- free, fat- free and pucker-free drink can also help soothe an upset stomach, and when paired with a healthy diet, it can even promote weight loss. All this from a single, natural ingredient, and without any artificial sweeteners or added sugars.

Variety of Original, Tangerine, Peach Mango, Pineapple and Passion Fruit Flavors
By adding a touch of 100% fruit to Vita Coco, the concept of hydration perfection has been redefined. This variety pack includes four Tetra Paks of 100% pure coconut water, plus two Tetra Paks each of tangerine, peach mango, pineapple and passion fruit flavors. Each flavor offers all the essential benefits of the original Vita Coco, but with a splash of 100% pure fruit.

11.2-Ounce Tetra Pak with Peel-Away Opening
The perfect solution for an on-the-go lifestyle, the 11.2-ounce Tetra Paks give you just the right amount of Vita Coco to get you through your next task. A convenient peel-away opening makes it easier than ever to access the great taste and benefits of Vita Coco wherever you go.

What's in the Box
Variety Pack of 12 11.2-ounce Tetra Paks of pure coconut water. Includes: 4 original, and 2 each of tangerine, peach mango, pineapple and passion fruit. (134 Total Ounces).

The Vita Coco Story
One evening in a Manhattan bar in February 2003, childhood friends, Ira Liran and Michael Kirban, were speaking with a couple of girls they had just met from Brazil. When asked what they missed most about their country, one of the girls, without hesitation, answered "agua de coco." Coconut water, she explained, is the most nutritious and delicious drink in the world.

The rest, as they say, is history. Two years later, the two successfully brought Vita Coco to market in a handful of stores along the East Coast. Since that fateful night in Soho in 2003, Vita Coco has not only carved a new market in the non-carbonated beverage business and redefined the alternative sports beverage category, but has also created the one of the fastest growing lifestyle beverages in North America. Now available in over 10,000 retail stores nationally, Vita Coco is a major beverage brand with a cult-like brand loyalty.
