Breakfast brain-food.

I am the Eggland’s Best brand ambassador.  The below is a sponsored post. The topic, opinions, and inability to keep my egg in the sunshine frame (yet!) are all my own.

20130909 122321 Breakfast brain food. We LOVE our tattooed eggs!

Around here we live our lives like an Arrested Development episode.

On many a morning you’ll find one of us shouting the opening lines to the series and, most likely, same person cracking up at him/herself.

(this blog is a play on the word MISFIT for a reason…)

Breakfast is also our dinner.

We both frequently eat traditionally dinner foods in the morning (hello brown rice & eggs!) and it’s our *family meal.*

For the same reason I exercise in the a.m. (I put on MY oxygen mask first!) we never know what will happen as the day unfolds so we gather as a family *before* life can intrude.

Disclosure:  Our breakfasts downgraded over the summer.

Gone were mornings filled with protein & power muffins and in-in-in-intruded some less than healthy fare.

Even though the Tornado is moving toward intuitive eating, crap eating begets crap eating which results in mama being told by school her child is an emotional roller-coaster less than stellar academic performance.

Or, if youre a big person, crap eating begets crap eating which results in less than fantastic LIFE performance & ENERGY levels.

20130908 064010 Breakfast brain food. brain food can be fun!

Thankfully the Tornado is interested in helping create her morning meals.  A fact this non-foodie mama adores.

Not to my surprise (& reason #48 why Im smitten with this partnershipshe decided to make eggs our Back to School BRAIN FOOD protein**.

She can do most of the meal making & *I* know eating the tattooed oval will carry her through her school day.

Eggs contain vitamin B2 (Riboflavin): B2 is CRUCIAL in the production of energy as it helps convert carbohydrates in to sugar which fuels our bodies.Eggs contain vitamin E.  This is an important antioxidant that helps to protect cells/tissues. Each of my FAVE Eggland’s Best eggs contain 10 times more Vitamin E than ordinary eggs. 25% of the recommended daily intake of this vitamin.Eggs contain CHOLINE (AKA the memory vitamin).  ‘Nuff said.Eggs contain vitamin D.  This vitamin helps the bod absorb calcium to maintain strong bones. It’s important for maintaining muscle strength, healthy body fat levels, and tissue health. Each Eggland’s egg contains 4 times more Vitamin D than ordinary eggs & provides 30% of daily recommended intake!Eggs contain PROTEIN! Protein helps keep us full.  Egg protein is ‘complete’ or a composition which can supply all of the body’s requirements with all of the essential amino acids. A single Eggland’s Best egg supplies 13% of our daily protein needs.20130908 065246 Breakfast brain food. happy happy brain food!

Im EGGcited to get us back to basics & return to fueling her breakfasts with brain food (I wont lie. I never stopped. I get crazy without my morning Egglands.).

Next up here is Holy Guacamole Deviled Eggs and I’d love your brain-food suggestions —traditional breakfast fare or not!

What foods do you eat in the morning to power your BRAIN for the day ahead?Have you created any EGGcellent recipes recently? Link yourself in the comments!

**We also play a game called Choose Yer Carb! — but that’s a post for a different day.

Breaking down breakfast.

This is often breakfast in our home.

We dont have many hard & fast rules in our house.

I like to offer choices as often as I can so the Tornado and the Husband feels empowered.

As a result, we may break every rule when it comes to breakfast—but the one rule is there must be a breaking of the fast.

Im over at attune foods today sharing all my morning meal secrets.

Put It In Your Food Trap! BelVita Breakfast Biscuits, Chobani Apple Cinnamon and Tropical Shakeology

Directions: Open up your food trap wide and start shoveling these foods inside….

BelVita Breakfast Biscuits: Perhaps I’ve broken the golden rule of health snobbery by loving a biscuit in a box? But momma want a biscuit. And this one is delicious.

I give Nabisco props for making a breakfast-cookie-snack-thingy that has NO high fructose corny-ness, NO hydrogenated oils and NO artificial flavors or sweeteners. The main ingredients are rolled oats and rye while flaunting 19 grams of whole grain. It’s light ‘n flaky with a delicate crunch and fabulous texture from the grains. Chewing on 4 biscuits has less sugar than a standard bowl of cereal, and the taste is very much a cross between a bowl of oatmeal and an oatmeal cookie.

Serving size: 4 biscuits, Cal. 230, Fat Cal. 80, Total Fat 8g, Sat. Fat 0.5, Sodium 220mg, Carbs 35mg, Fiber 3g, Sugars 11g, Protein 4g

Chobani Apple Cinnamon Greek Yogurt: This one has officially de-throned my beloved Peach as my favorite Chobani flavor. Apple Cinnamon Chobani tastes just like apple pie with its apple chunks and visible flecks of cinnamon. But let me tell ya something: If you grab your own cinnamon spice and go heavy-handed by adding even more, your taste buds will be belly flipping with extra happiness. Did you know cinnamon has anti-microbial benefits AND helps control blood sugar? Yep, check out all the cinnamon facts, baby.

My next move is to bake up some fresh, warm apple chunks and pour Chobani Apple Cinnamon over top for one helluva healthy nighttime snack. Ahhh. That’s gonna be really glaawsome (glamorous + awesome).

Serving size: 1 container, Cal. 140, Fat Cal. 0, Sat. Fat 0g, Sodium 80mg, Carbs 20g, Fiber 1g, Sugars 19g, Protein 14g

Tropical Shakeology: After a very long wait, Tropical flavor just launched today, meeting the demands of vegans, vegetarians and all other forms of greedy humans interested in gulping down its tropical nutrition.

I’m impatiently waiting for my first order to arrive (because patience is highly overdone), but here’s Beachbody’s description in the meantime:

“Just take one sip, and its sweet, luscious strawberry flavor along with notes of tropical fruits such as pineapple, banana, and papaya will whisk you away to paradise. You’ll quickly discover that the delicate flavor is easy to customize with your favorite fruits. For instance, it combines deliciously with bananas, blueberries, and coconut water. Wouldn’t that flavor combination be a great way to start your day?”

You can read a ton’s more about Shakeology on my Beachbody site: www.Shakeology.com/YumYucky.

Happy food-trapping everybody! It’s just the proper thing to do.

Cheesy Spinach Melt: No Excuses Healthy Breakfast in Only 3-Minutes

If you’re short on time for breakfast, yet very serious about your body transformation, you need to be thinking outside the breakfast cereal box and/or fast food drive thru for the “healthiest” thing you can find on the menu.

My recipe for the Cheesy Spinach Melt is cooked in the microwave and done in only 3-minutes (including prep time). Make it at home or pack up the ingredients, take it to work, and cook it up there like I did. If you tell me you don’t have time to eat healthy, you bettah be thinking again.

Ingredients:

2 Eggsvery huge handful of fresh spinach leavessprinklings of the Extra Sharp Cheddar cheese

Directions:

Crack eggs into microwave safe bowl and beat ‘em up.Heap in your very huge handful of spinach leaves and mix it around. Make sure all of the spinach is saturated by the egg mixture.Place bowl in microwave and cook for 2-minutes. (adjust time if necessary, depending on your microwave)Take bowl out, add your sprinklings of Cheddar cheese (but don’t be too greedy with the cheeses), then return to the microwave for 15-seconds of cheesy melting-ness.That’s it. You’re done. Now eat it up.

Ooo-la-laaa! It was delicious.

So I don’t wanna hear about you eating crap for breakfast (including bagels) because you didn’t have time for something better. Your body transformation requires you to make time. Even if it means you have only 3-minutes to spare, you can eat healthy with the Cheesy Spinach Melt.

booyah!

Hot Body Home Workout #1 and Post-Workout Breakfast Ideas

Hey guys, here’s the first of many Hot Body Home Workouts to come! If you can’t get to the gym or if home workouts are simply your thang, it’s time to get up off your booty and get it moving.

After a thorough warm-up: Select your circuit level (Level 1, 2 or 3), consisting of basic moves that only get tougher depending on which level you choose. Then move onto the optional “Hotter Body Challenge” to top off your workout on an extra sweaty, fat burning note.

LEVEL 1 equipment needed: optional exercise mat or carpeted area

3-5 knee push-ups (on mat or carpeting)8 squats (feet slight wider than shoulder-width)8 alternating reverse lunges

Complete this beginner’s circuit 2-3 times.

Level 1 Hotter Body Challenge (optional): After finishing your circuits, set your interval timer for 5 rounds of 45/15. Each 1-minute round  = 45 seconds brisk march in place + 15 seconds slow march in place.

LEVEL 2 equipment needed: one 8-10#dumbbell, optional exercise mat or carpeted area

5 full body push-ups + 5 knee push-ups12 squat jumps10 alternating reverse lunges, holding one 8-10# dumbbell in both hands close to your chest.

Complete this intermediate circuit 3-4 times.

Level 2 Hotter Body Challenge (optional): After finishing your circuits, set your interval timer for 5 rounds of 45/15. Each 1-minute round = 45 seconds “invisible” rope skipping + 15 seconds brisk march in place.

LEVEL 3 equipment needed: one 8-10#dumbbell, optional exercise mat or carpeted area

Breakfast to Bed.

Please to enjoy Cat. I love me some Cat. I met me some Cat when I was in NYC. Please to enjoy Cat.

Hi. This is me. I’m Cat and I blog at Breakfast to Bed

This is also me.

Yeah, I know it’s blurry, but it’s a cell phone picture from 2004. For those of you that don’t remember those cameras, it was basically an elf, living inside of a box, with a hammer, chisel, and pastels doing the photography.

As you can (barely) see, I wasn’t healthy. I was the quintessential “smiling on the outside, crying on the inside” type of person. I was the boisterous, funny, friend of everyone. I was the friend everyone wanted. Whatever you needed, I was there. The only problem was, I wasn’t very good to myself.

I would spend hours making elaborate dinners or tutoring friends in Biology or Shakespearean English; and then come home to my husband and make rich, fat filled dishes that we would eat on the sofa. It sounds wonderful, but I was miserable.

I am an actor, so of course I was also eleventeen other jobs, including that as a studio singer. Long hours on my feet singing wore on both my feet, and my lungs. At the end of the day, I felt every breath, every high note, and every footstep. It felt like the entire chain-smoking cast of “Mad Men” lived inside my lungs. I would get home, look at myself in the mirror in the end of the night ashamed, and I just didn’t know what to do.

Over and over again, my husband would tell me that I was beautiful and that he loved me, and that he didn’t care if I was 300 lbs or 110. He was with me for me. I didn’t; I couldn’t understand why he wanted me, I didn’t want myself.

I ended up doing what so many desperate people have done; I had gastric bypass surgery. I found a surgeon who was known for giving you a “quick” surgery date, and the whole process; start to finish, took 5 months. The process is supposed to take over a year and a half.

Something I didn’t know about having a particularly aggressive surgeon is that he would make my stomach pouch only .5 oz. This is half of the size of the normal gastric bypass pouch. That is only one tablespoon of space.

I became violently ill. I didn’t eat anything for weeks and months and had to be given iv nutrients and fluids. The iron in my blood became so low that I required blood transfusions, B12 shots, and eventually-a second surgery.

If I was depressed before; I was practically comatose at that point. I was down 100+ lbs in four months. I couldn’t physically get out of bed for any length of time, until 7 months post-op. My weight loss finally slowed, and that is when I made the change. I read an article (more like an ad) in BackStage Magazine about actors meeting other actors at the gym. It spoke about important contacts that were made, and our collective self-esteems being lifted. (If you don’t know this already, actors are notoriously insecure. Wouldn’t you be if your job was 95% rejection? We are also notoriously vain, hence my blog-all about ME!!)

So I went to the gym. Jiminy Judas, I hated that place. Why on EARTH would you go there voluntarily? People grunted, sweat, stared, huffed, puffed, and blew me over with their perfume. It didn’t take me long to figure out that this little piggy was at the wrong.damn.gym. It only took me THREE more gyms to find one I liked. Apparently, I like quieter gyms with really perky desk people and a juice bar that also serves whisky. Whatever works. (Seriously, my gym served booze. I never drank it, but I liked knowing the option was there.)

I shocked the hell out of myself at this point, because guess what, I effing loved it. I loved the elliptical (not anymore), I loved dance class, I loved lifting weights, following a program, and I ADORED seeing results. I even loved finding healthy alternatives to my previously decadent dishes! Who knew a pound of butter WASN’T necessary in mashed potatoes? Go figure.

Guess what? I know now that my legs are strong, my back is strong, my body is strong. My body is beautiful.(-ish I have a few, regrettable tattoos. Hellllo, 1999) I can make healthy and beautiful food, and make my family healthy and beautiful.

After I had my son, I didn’t want to spend the money on a gym membership anymore. There were too many cute things I wanted him to have. (Hey, he NEEDED that pair of linen overalls with the skull on it!!) I fell into a funk. I didn’t know what to do with myself. I walked, sure, but I wanted ACTION. I wanted my heart to race for something other than almost knocking over freshly pumped breast milk.

Someone I knew told me I’d like running. I told them they must not know me. For some reason, I agreed to go running with them anyway. I didn’t have anything else to do. Well slap my ass and call me Flo-Jo if I didn’t love it. I could run ANYWHERE, ANYTIME. I had to get better shoes, but other than that, you can run in practically anything. (or practically nothing.)

I ran and ran and ran. I ran 26.2 miles. 13.1 miles, and more 5 and 10k’s than I can remember. I was born.to.run. My son was too. He loves running with me more than anything else in the world and I with him. Out of everything I have learned, the most important thing is that I want to pass down this love of health and fitness to my son, and now my baby girl. I never want them to be in the position that I was in. I want them to grow up strong, healthy, and full of confidence.

I want to keep us active and keep our bodies full of energy and good food.

I want others to enjoy a healthy, active, and delicious life as well.

This is my easy and wonderful recipe for grilled pineapple chicken. It can be found here at http://breakfasttobed.com/2011/06/18/pineapple-express/

Thank you so much for reading my story. I really hope you know that EVERYONE has the ability to live the life they dream of.

Emerald Breakfast on the Go Nut & Granola Mix (Breakfast Blend) Review

Emerald Breakfast on the Go Nut & Granola Mix

The Breakfast Blend Emerald Breakfast on the Go Nut & Granola Mix contains vanilla yogurt raisins, dried sweetened cranberries, apple cinnamon glazed walnuts & almonds, granola and dried apple pieces, all in a small packet (51 grams). Now, just looking at a pack, I was pretty skeptical that this would make a "filling" breakfast - no doubt if I eat it in the morning, I can call anything breakfast - but would it sustain me for any significant period of time is what was really on my mind.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 pouch (51 grams)
Calories: 210
Total Fat: 8 grams, 13%
Saturated Fat: 2.5 grams, 11%
Sodium: 85 mg, 4%
Carbohydrates: 33 grams
Fiber: 3 grams, 13%
Sugars: 25 grams
Protein: 3 grams

Clearly, the answer is no way. I feel like the name "Breakfast to Go" is unfortunate. If anybody eats this for breakfast, then their morning hunger will not be satisfied - this will simply be a wasted 210 calories and 13% of the daily value for total fat - not to mention 25 grams of sugars. The mix was a little too sweet for me - I could have done without the yogurt raisins (which is made with partially hydrogenated oils), and used more almonds instead. Plus, it's like there is a sugar glaze over everything except the granola. Added to plain (unsweetened) oatmeal and you have a winning combination; jazz up a boring salad with this - yes; take it with you the next time you're headed out for a long hike - sure. But eat it as an on the go breakfast - no way!

Each 51 gram pouch of Emerald Breakfast on the Go Breakfast Blend provides 210 calories from 8 grams of total fat, 2.5 grams of which is saturated (11% and 13% of the daily value), 85 mg of sodium (4% of the DV), 3 grams of fiber, 3 grams of protein and 25 grams of sugars.

Emerald Breakfast on the Go Nut & Granola Mix (Chocolate Cherry Blend) Review

Emerald Breakfast on the Go Nut & Granola Mix (Chocolate Cherry Blend)

The Chocolate Cherry Blend of Emerald Breakfast on the Go Nut & Granola Mix contains roasted peanuts, cherry-flavored dried cranberries, granola clusters, milk chocolate candies and coca roast almonds. As I had already tried another variety of Emerald Breakfast on the Go - the Breakfast Blend (Review) - I was already prepared NOT to try having this for breakfast on the go, and instead, it was treated as just a light after-workout snack.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 pouch (51 grams)
Calories: 240
Total Fat: 13 grams, 21%
Saturated Fat: 2.5 grams, 13%
Sodium: 80 mg, 3%
Carbohydrates: 26 grams
Fiber: 3 grams, 14%
Sugars: 17 grams
Protein: 6 grams

When you think of it that way, then you don't expect it to be too filling, and indeed it wasn't. A 51 gram pouch of mostly granola, just isn't enough to satisfy anything more than a child's snacking needs - and actually, it works beautifully for that purpose. As for the taste, I loved the smoky Emerald Cocoa Roast Almonds (Review), but wish there was more - and the cherry-flavored cranberries were like sweet chewy nuggets, which provided a nice contrast to all the crunchiness of the granola and nuts (I have no clue why they didn't just call this variety "Chocolate Cranberry Blend" and forget all this cherry-flavored stuff). I also liked that the granola were in big clusters, which meant you could get a little bit of everything in a mouthful.

Coupons.com

Each 51 gram pouch of Chocolate Cherry Blend of Emerald Breakfast on the Go Nut & Granola Mix provides 240 calories from 13 grams of total fat (21% of the daily value), 2.5 grams of which is saturated (13% of the DV), 3 grams of fiber (14% of the DV), 6 grams of protein and 17 grams of sugars. That's 8 grams less sugar than the Breakfast Blend (Review), as well as 2x the protein, but also 5 grams more total fat and 30 more calories.

The ingredients list is not all-natural - there is the artificial sweetener acesulfame K, as well as a number of artificial colors. I purchased a box with 6 pouches for $3.18, and don't think I would buy this again - too much total fat for such a small snack, plus I'm not wowed by the ingredients list, but really, for 240 calories, I could find a much more filling snack.

Join me for breakfast? (giveaway post)

Around here breakfast is not only the most important meal of the day—it’s our family-meal du jour.

For now we *rarely* gather at the table to share dinner (please to see an early to bed child and cross-reference under Husband Who Tends To Work Late) & are far more likely to be found at the crack of dawn breaking bread eating cereal, talking about our yesterday and planning our day.

Breakfast, in Casa MizFit, does far more than nourish our bodies.

It’s our time to share our Hi/Low** from the day before.

It’s our opportunity, without any time pressure of looming bedtime or hectic mid-day schedule, to talk about what might be stressing or worrying us about the day to come.

Yet, being the misfit mom I am, there is an ever-present backdrop of wanting to fuel our physiques as well.

(Ive learned the hard way you can be happy calm & content—yet if you’re not healthy you’re not fully living.)

The Tornado LOVES her some Erewhon cereal (seriously to my SHOCK’mazement. The first time she tried it I expected she’d turn her Tornado nose up at the bowl.  Her current fave is the Rice Twice).

The Husband is a long time lover of the Uncle Sams (we’ve been together for almost 18 years.  I introduced him to Uncle Sams 16 years ago.  He’s been smitten ever since).

Me? Give me ANY cereal which is gluten free and Im a happy happy rash-free woman.

Which brings me to the point of this post.

CONSIDER JOINING MY FAMILY AND MAKING BREAKFAST THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF YOUR DAY?

And, if you can’t swing it with your partner/spouse/roommates/family, consider taking your cereal along with you for later in the day?

I have three of the lovely green Attune bowls pictured above (made from recycled yogurt containers no less *and* BPA-free) CRAMMED with free Attune product coupons to give away.

Use the bowl for breakfast at home.

Fill it with cereal & just add milk later when you need a snack on-the-go.

You choose.

The world is your oyster virtual breakfast buffet.

To enter simply share your current go-to breakfast foods these FREE! TREATS! would be replacing.

THREE lucky USA-type winners will be announced 6.7.11

**I didnt make up this game.  We love this game.  Each person shares the best thing that happened to him/her that day (hi) and the not-so-best (low).  Our rules are you have to share/find a high to your day—if you can’t think of a low that’s ok.

**This isn’t a sponsored post. I am, indeed, an Attune foods brand ambassador but was not hired to blog this post.

Food Healthy Eating 14 Breakfast Foods to Fight Off a Cold Health Slideshow Which Is Worse? Battle of the Fast Food Breakfasts Health Slideshow Dramatic Celebrity Weight-Loss Stories

You may have heard that when it comes to the battle of the bulge, it’s best to start your day with a big breakfast. That way, you’ll have all day to burn off the calories. And, by filling yourself up first thing, you’ll be less likely to splurge on a mid-morning snack or gargantuan lunch.

Well, scratch that theory from your list of dieting to-dos. A new study published in the Nutrition Journal suggests that a big breakfast leads to eating more calories throughout the day, not less. The researchers asked 380 people to write down everything they ate for up to two weeks. When subjects indulged in a heartier breakfast than usual, they did not compensate by eating less later, as originally suspected. Instead, they ate the same amount of calories as usual. Eating a large breakfast, they found, increases the number of calories consumed and thus contributes to weight gain.

Of course, that’s not to say you should skip breakfast to lose weight. Instead, an easy way to cut calories and inches would be to eat a light and sensible breakfast, concludes the study’s lead author, Dr. Volker Schusdziarra, from the Else-Kröner-Fresenius Center of Nutritional Medicine in Munich.

Foods that were responsible for hiking up morning-meal calories included such lumberjack specials as sausage, eggs, yogurt, bread, breakfast cakes, butter, cheese and jam. That doesn’t mean you have to avoid these foods if you’re on a diet – though we don’t ever recommend eating sausage, breakfast cakes or butter -- only that you should be conscious of how quickly the calories can stack up when you do consume them. A bagel with low-fat cream cheese, for instance, will cost you nearly 500 calories. High in refined carbohydrates, it’s guaranteed to spike your blood sugar and leave you ravenous before lunchtime.

The best diet-friendly breakfast is one that has enough fiber and protein to fill you up and keep you full until your next meal, without a lot of sugar or saturated fat to weigh you down. Good choices include whole-wheat toast with a dab of peanut butter or an egg, low-sugar whole-grain cereal with fruit and low-fat milk, plain yogurt with flaxseed and fruit or egg whites scrambled with vegetables. Past research has found that people who eat eggs for breakfast lose 65 percent more weight than those who eat bagels for breakfast. Opt for egg whites if you’re watching your cholesterol.

If you do find yourself craving something before lunch, try a low-sodium vegetable juice, like V-8. It’s an easy way to add more veggies to your diet, and according to one study, it may even accelerate your weight loss.
