Running in Nashville

What. a. day!

I can’t believe I woke up this morning in Nashville and went for a run.

And now I’m home watching Aerial America with the Husband. In between there was a plane ride, some collaboration work with Jen and food, a LOT of food. Between eating at an old Nashville Soda Shop,

Screen shot 2013-08-02 at 11.07.49 PM

and going out with The Husband for dinner, I feel like a blob at the moment. Bleh.

But it was totally worth it. I enjoyed every bite and I never order milkshakes, so I’m glad that when I did, it was the most amazing one ever.

Note: Jen snapped that shot as payback because she said  I’m always taking photos of her eating. To which I said, “We’re always eating!”

It’s hard not to do when you are traveling and there’s so much to try.

Anyway, I just wanted to pop in, share my running video and give an update. Jen and I are working on a Nashville post for TheUnworldlyTravelers. We had fun but it wasn’t what I expected and unfortunately I don’t think it’s going to work for next year’s FitBloggin’ location, which means I’m still hunting! Trying to find the balance of hotel with meeting space in a nice pedestrian-friendly area is proving to be a challenge this year!

OK, off to bed for me. Have a great weekend!

NO APOLOGIES running! (guest post)

MizFit note: I LOVED THIS BOOK. MizFit note: I LOVED THIS BOOK.

Tennyson said that in spring, a young man’s fancy turns to love, and this may be true for men, but for most women I know, in spring, our thoughts turn to exercise.

After the pale, sluggish winter retreats, our pale, sluggish thighs emerge, and something must be done about them before beach season arrives in force. Since nobody really wants to eat less, all that’s left to do is exercise, so we can lose 35 pounds and keep it off, like Carla did.
But when you look like Carla, it’s much easier to go outside and run around scantily clad. It’s tougher for those of us who look more like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

I applaud and embrace Carla’s motto — Unapologetically Myself – but some days it takes a Woman of Steel to go forth and exercise in public when there’s no visible steel in you, just Upper Arms of Jelly.

“How long does it take before the embarrassment of running goes away?” someone recently asked me. I think she was hoping I would say “one week, four hours” or “the minute you get past your mailbox.”

I wish I could have.

But the truth is, I’ve been running for more than 25 years, am pretty damned good at it, and yet there still are days that I’m embarrassed. Usually, these are days in which I make the enormous, soul-slaying mistake of LOOKING IN A MIRROR.

This is pretty much always a bad idea. Because most American women, no matter what size they are, think they are fat.

I wrote a book about being a fat runner, and every time I give a talk on the subject, some beautiful lissome creature will come up to me afterwards, and whisper to me, “I’m a size 4, but I feel so fat.”

Fat is a state of mind, not a number on scale.

When I first started running, I weighed around 180 pounds, and felt thick and slow and walrusy. But I stuck with it, and after a while, I lost about 30 pounds and felt thin.

Then I got pregnant, not once but four times, and in my last pregnancy, I topped 220 pounds. Losing 40 pounds was arduous with three kids and a newborn, but when I got to 180, let me tell you, I felt THIN.

See?

The deception can work both ways. Personally, I think reality is highly overrated, particularly when it keeps me from experiencing the joy of endorphins.

Knowing that regardless what the reality is – that I can have a “walrus day” even if I lose 50 pounds and am solidly gazelle — I’ve come up with a strategy for combating my walrus days. Mine involves sunglasses, a baseball cap, and a pair of fingerless bicycling gloves.

The sunglasses and the baseball cap, of course, are classic disguises. So what if you look fat? Nobody will know who you are!

The bicycle gloves? Hell if I know. But they make me feel powerful and tough.

Everyone has something that makes them feel powerful and tough. Or at least they should. A tattoo, a wicked-bad pedicure, a toe ring, a nose ring … whatever… just something that screams Unapologetically Myself, in those times that, for whatever reason, you yourself can’t.

Put that thing on, and out the door you go.

Am I really a tough, warrior athlete when I’m strutting down the street with my pale, slow thighs rubbing together like a couple of lovesick Honeybaked hams? Nah, it’s just marshmallowy ol’ me, baffling passers-by with my bicycle gloves, and quite possibly looking rather silly. But sometimes the feeling matters more than reality, and in the end, I win.

I get the endorphins.

I get outside.

Reality is highly overrated.

Running on Vacation

Super quick as I’m heading to the pool!

I recorded this on my run this morning. I’m going to have to start bringing good camera with me because my crappy iPod did NOT do the view justice. It was GORGEOUS there.

Anyway, we’re having a blast. If you want to road trip with us, click here to check out The Unworldly Travelers. I posted picks from yesterday.

Have a great day!

Running in the Dark in Venice

So sorry about the quality of the video guys. I was really hoping to run during a sunrise but I need to get out early, before our day starts.

This was recorded yesterday in Venice. I set a goal to run at least once in each city. So far, so good! We’re leaving for Florence tomorrow. Depending on where my hotel is I’m hoping to get a longer run in. Maybe 5 miles.

Thanks for all the well wishes and wonderful comments. I just posted more photos on TheUnworldlyTravelers. Click here to see photos from our 2 days in Venice and here to see Rome. I’m having an amazing time!

A Weekend Quote While Running in Florence

My Italian vacation is coming to an end. I’m a mix of feelings and emotions. Happy to go home and see my boys. Sad to leave such a beautiful place. Overwhelmed at all I have seen. Inspired by all I have experienced. Motivated to make travel even MORE of a priority in my life.

Yesterday I completed my goal of running in each city I was visiting. First Rome, then Venice and here is a quick video from Florence.

I was hoping to run again this morning but I was just to tired and decided sleep was more important. I’ve been sucking the marrow out of each day.

Right now I’m in Rome. We have the tour group’s farewell dinner tonight and then on a plane in the morning. It’s an 8 hour flight to New York and then a 3 hour drive home. I’m not looking forward to that but I am excited to see my boys!

Oh and I almost forgot! This weekend’s quote. I came across this in my email and it totally made me smile.

“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Another way to say…

I snapped that on the way into Florence from the bus. For more photos from the last 2 days click here.

It also made me smile. :)

Follow your star and leave a trail this weekend.

Arrivederci!

Trail Running, I Am!

Yes, I’m channeling my inner Yoda. Little Guy’s been getting into Star Wars lately. Every week we watch a new episode for our Sensational Sunday picnic.

Anyway, I’m writing real quick to share my latest running adventures. Today I ran Kelly’s Dream run, a 3.5 mile trail race, and 2 weeks ago I ran the Patuxent River Trail 10K.

Trail running is new for me. I’v been running for 4 years now, finishing my first ever 5k event in June 2008. I’ve run dozens of 5ks since, a 10 miler, a few halves and even a marathon.

I can’t deny it anymore, I AM a runner.

Although, I’m not the kind of runner who cares much about speed or winning or going insane distances. I’m more into it for the experience. I like the energy at events and being part of a something bigger than me. I like setting a goal and achieving it, the challenge of it. In a weird way, I like knowing I can do it and proud that I am.

I think trail running is even more rewarding than road running. Sure, I’m a little slower and it’s way more challenging but there’s something very exciting about it. I don’t want or need music, I like navigating the terrain, it’s so refreshing and rejuvenating.

Today I ran 5k of VERY hilly trails in 44:09 that’s 12:37 a mile. Some of the hills where so steep in both directions, I couldn’t help but stop and walk.

Two weeks ago I ran the Patuxent River Trail 10K (just over 6 miles) in 1:12:36 which I think is about 12 minutes a mile. It wasn’t as hilly but there were a few inclines that slowed me down. Here are some shots thanks to Quantico Orienteering

It may be 4 years since I started this running journey but I still find it unbelievable. I am doing things I never thought I could do. Especially after what people have told me in the past.

“Mama, you need to start running.”

(this is my kind of running)

The Tornado & I were out ambling around Austin recently when she stopped abruptly, turned, looked at me and stated:

Mama, you need to start running.

Needless to say, since this sentiment was shared in her not soft five year old voice, it garnered more than a few horrified looks.

Horrified and, if I interpreted them correctly, Oh Ive been there, Sister!! glances.

I wasnt shocked.

It’s as we always talk about here:  the little people in our lives have ears and those little ears hear everything.

It wasnt until my public shaming  The Tornado’s remark I even realized I’d been walking around the house saying (to the husband. to myself. definitely not to her) I needed to start back running and not running a step.

In that public moment I had no answer and merely laughed her comment away.

The next morning (shes nothing if not tenacious) it started again.

Mama when are you going to run?

Again I brushed her off, went about my morning routine and fully planned to plop my misfit arse happily on the recumbent bike with a trashy magazine.

Id be lying if I didnt share I thought to myself:

she’s 5. she’s not the boss of me.

But she persevered.

She strode purposefully up to me and announced:

OK Mama.  You’re going to wear this thing (she gestured wildly around my tatas which I assumed correctly was her sign for sports bra) & set up your camera on (more gesturing.  took me a while but this one was tripod) and film us so you can remember.

Still I continued with my morning routine.

Mama really. When are we going to run?

I did other stuff.  I ate breakfast.  Folded laundry.

Really Mama for how many minutes are we going to run? (her five year old voice grew loud with irritation. not unlike her mama’s when she knows she’s being purposefully ignored)

I think it was Oprah who once said (and I paraphrase) your life whispers to you and when you don’t heed it whispers louder until you do.

I know in my heart (I’ll spare you the rambling why) I need to start running.

My little person is shouting it.

And my world is whispering.

Loudly and generously.

(her repeated use of the word WE, when I know she’s not a fan of the boring no-purpose run, touched me beyond compare)

And Ive decided to listen.

So I ask you.

What’s your life whispering  these days?  And will today be the day you choose to listen?

Y

Nighttime Running, Little Guys Lunch and Today’s Food Journal

I decided to do things a little differently today. Instead of starting my day with a run–something that was pretty easy to do with just the 5 year old but not so much with an infant–I headed out at 9 PM after both kids were in bed.

run
Chart from the Nike+

It was EXACTLY what I needed to do!

I feel FAN-FREAKIN-TASTIC! Even with a beet red face and sweat dripping from my brow, I have a smile ear to ear.

This was exactly what I needed to start my snack-less nights challenge. I don’t even feel like eating now. It’s weird.

Let’s see, in other news…

He has sugar snap peas, sweet cherries, whole grain ritz with The Laughing Cow cheese and turkey pepperoni, leftover roasted potatoes and 2 chocolate chip cookies. It’s one of his bigger lunches because he requested the potatoes. We’ll see if they actually get eaten.

If there is enough interest I’ll start this up in the fall since there are only 2 weeks of school left. Let me know what you think.

Ok, that’s all I have in me today besides my food journal. It’s now 11:30 and I STILL have no desire to munch! YAY for nighttime running!

All bran, with frozen wild blueberries ans choc almond milkAn old favorite breakfast of mine. Hungry and wanting something substantial to hold me over until lunch. I was hungry bit it wasn’t quite lunch time yetbrown rice california roll, spring roll, miso soupOut to lunch. GUESS who’s idea that was. ALL cooked on the grill again. I’m obsessed. Sugar free Rita’s and a few bites of the little guys..family outing for ice cream on a hot day.

My 2 mile run at the end of the day! see above

Sucked some down after the run and just took my vitamins.

Get up and running with Up & Running (guest post and giveaway)

Today’s guest post is from renowned running coach Julia Jones.  A woman with whom those of you who can’t live without our Two Fit Chicks podcast are already familiar.  After training thousands of women in Italy in her running clinics, she’s taking her message to the streets internet. Julia has teamed up with my podcast partner Shauna Reid of Dietgirl fame to create Up & Running a kickass online running clinic for women.

Their first course, the eight-week 5K Beginners Course – starts on Monday 21 March (woo hoo! The first day of spring!) & if you want to shake up your fitness routine this spring I urge you to check the course details /Julia’s amazing coaching expertise at upandrunningonline.org.

Shauna & Julia have saved a place on the 5K course for one MizFit reader. You can be from anywhere in the world, but you need to be female (there are plans for male-courses in the works).

Comment below for your chance to win and please to answer this question: If you could run for miles and miles and miles without ever getting tired, where would you run to today?

I’ve been offering women’s running clinics in Italy for over twelve years.

When I first started I used to give the ladies a questionnaire to fill out at the end of the eight weeks.

I wanted to know what prompted them to sign up for group running lessons. Most of all I wanted to know what, in the end, they felt they had gotten out of the two months together.

I tabulated all the answers and comments for a few years and then stopped.

Why? Because the answers, year after year, were always the same.

It was clear this was how it would always be. What I found most interesting is that they signed up for one thing, but came away with so much more.

The number ONE reason women come to a running clinic was to lose weight.

It could be 5 pounds or 50 pounds, but somewhere out there they’d heard that running burns more calories than any other activity and they wanted this weight off NOW.

Some of them went so far as trying calculate how many calories they’d burned and matched that to how much they ate – a dangerous and futile practice. Of course there were other answers like wanting to try running or run a marathon some day, but weight loss was always at the top of the list.

The funny thing is that after eight weeks they weren’t thinking about the scale anymore.

What’s kept me holding running clinics year after year was the Number One answer they gave me about what they got from the running clinic: They felt “happier”.

Sometimes it was a generic answer, other times  they would write me long poetic prose about their experience.

They had set a goal for themselves and had obtained it. Happy.

They felt proud for having finally stuck with something for more than a week. Happy.

They were running and they never ever dreamed that they could actually run. Triple happy!

The only regret any of them ever had was that they had wasted so many months or years wanting to start a running program to only talk themselves out of it for whatever reason. And you know what? In the end, some of them did end up losing a few pounds, but it was no longer the main reason they continued with their running.

It had become so much more.
