Food Find: IzzyPop Popcorn

Let me start by saying Food Finds are products I stumble across and feel the need to share. Anything in this category was not a solicited review or paid post. I always disclose when I have a relationship with a brand. All opinions expressed are always my own.

Do you guys remember in August when I had the weird string of media attention? There was the stolen photos and then the “Today” show chose my turkey burger recipe to featured and I traveled to NYC with Mom. All of it was such an amazing experience!

Anyway, while in the green room for the “Today” show, there were lots of yummy snacks and one in particular caught my eye because (if you didn’t already know) I’m a popcorn FANATIC!

20131024_izzpop1

This popcorn was GOOD! And cute with its fun label and ribbon. I turned over the bag to look at the nutritional information (because that’s what I do) and was pleasantly surprised.

20131024_izzpop2

Popcorn, oil, sugar, cinnamon and salt. 110 calories a servings and only 275 for the whole bag, ’cause let’s be honest, I’m eating the whole bag.

And I did.

The producer I was working with noticed me looking at the bag and told me the story of IzzyPop. This is from its website…

IzzyPop Popcorn started back in 2011, when 8-year-old Isabella came up with the idea of popping and selling popcorn as a fun summer project. Since popcorn has always been one of Isabella’s favorite healthy snacks, she wanted to be able to share it with everyone! Popping popcorn in an old-fashioned popcorn machine at home, was how it all began.

Isabella’s mom, Teresa, owns Teresa’s Gourmet Cafe and they cater for the “Today” show. Apparently IzzyPop is a big hit with many of the guests who visit the green room, like Patrick Monahan of Train …

And seriously, how cute is Isabella?

Screen Shot 2013-10-24 at 3.07.39 PM

I was so intrigued I decided to talk to Teresa since the cafe was literally next door to my hotel.

Teresa must have thought I was nuts. I told her I was a blogger and that I fell in love with her daughter’s popcorn, and that’s when she told be the story of how Isabella made it summer project a few years before. She said they were working on a new site to promote and I told her I would definitely post a review once they went live.

Well, they went live, and here I am!

I really do love everything about this popcorn, including the story. As someone who involves her kids in everything she does, I think it’s so great that Isabella is rocking her own product line at 11.

Everything from deciding on a name, picking out the colors, designing labels, and choosing the packaging turned into a huge family project. Isabella made bags of popcorn and sold them with her little brother at a family owned gourmet food store on 51st Street and Rockefeller Plaza in NYC. With her homemade signs and little stand, Isabella sold so many bags that summer, there was no keeping up with the demand. With a little coordination and a lot of effort, IzzyPop Popcorn expanded from a cute summer project into an actual snack product, popped and packaged in a real factory!

So inspiring! Right?

IzzyPop currently comes in 4 flavors, Olive Oil and Sea Salt, Cinnamon Toast, Jalapeño, and Carmel Corn. Teresa sent me more samples today…

20131024_izzpop3

I was loving the Jalapeño today alongside my bowl of Red Bell Pepper Soup With White Cheddar Swirl.

It was the perfect side dish!

Isabella’s IzzyPop Popcorn site is now live and open for business — click here to check them out. And they also have a Twitter and Facebook page but be patient with them; they are still trying to figure the social media thing out.

Any New Yorkers out there familiar with Isabella? Hey, you never know. It’s a small world!

Sometimes You Cut Your Losses and Pop Some Popcorn

Today is one of those days I could just eat for the sake of eating. I’m a bottomless pit. Nothing is satisfying my non-hunger. Nothing.

But I committed to food journal until Christmas and that’s exactly what I’m going to do. The good, the bad and the ugly.

The day started with a simple pear. It was the only thing I could grab while feeding a baby and shuffling a 1st grader off to school.

Once he was on the bus I took a minute to eat something more substantial. Leftover veggie eggs from yesterday.

After volunteering at School and before heading out to run errands I had a bowl of homemade turkey soup. It was too early for lunch but I didn’t want to be tempted to hit a fast food place while out.

When I got home I had a real lunch. The leftover Roasted Brussels Sprouts from Thanksgiving…

and the leftover turkey quesadilla from yesterday.

By late afternoon I was hunting for a snack and that’s when I saw them.

Darn truffles in my pantry. I had 2.

Then I sat and took too many pictures of the Baby. (Click here for a crawling photo journal)

Dinner was "Roni’s Turkey Surprise"

Basically the end of the leftover turkey with gravy, a can of corn, mixed with egg noodles. The boys loved it!

After dinner the snack attack was already starting. I decided to have a some hot chocolate and I couldn’t resist adding a splash of Irish Cream. My new obsession.

As I was sipping the hot cocoa an evil thought popped into my head. How much better would this be with a cookie or two? Then I remembered the Mother-in-Law brought these for Thanksgiving.

DO NOT BUY THEM.

I kid, but they are super good. Very reminiscent of a fudge stripe cookie and you know how I feel about them.

At this point the flood gates were open. I ate 6.

Then I returned to the pantry and knocked off the last 3 truffles. ugh.

EVEN with a chocolate overload tummy ache I STILL WANTED TO EAT!

Why? Why? WHY?

I don’t know and I don’t feel like psychoanalyzing myself. It is what it is. These things happen. Sometimes you cut your losses and pop some popcorn

And that’s exactly what I did.

Orville Redenbacher's Natural Lime & Salt Popcorn

Orville Redenbacher's Natural Lime & Salt PopcornI LOVE popcorn and probably have it 2 or 3 times a week. Usually, I buy the corn kernels and air-pop them, but on occasion, I'll have a pack or 2 of microwave popcorn on hand for when I run out. When I first saw Orville Redenbacher's Natural Lime & Salt Popcorn, I thought it was a rather odd flavor combination, and kept on going. But a friend of mine loves it and she let me try it one day while I was at her house, and I have to say - not bad ... not bad at all.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 bag (44 grams)
Calories: 220
Total Fat: 15 grams, 23%
Saturated Fat: 7 grams, 35%
Sodium: 370 mg, 15%
Carbohydrates: 21 grams
Fiber: 4 grams, 16%
Sugars: 0 grams
Protein: 3 grams

The lime flavor comes out a little bit in the aroma and sort of an after-taste when eating the popcorn. The flavor definitely makes it's presence known, but isn't really strong and overwhelming. And it's one of those flavors that you either love or hate. As much as I liked it, I don't think it's something that I would buy on a regular basis.

Each 44 gram bag (1 serving) of Orville Redenbacher's Natural Lime & Salt Popcorn provides 220 calories, 23% of the daily value for total fat (15 grams), and 35% of the DV for saturated fat. There is also 370 mg sodium (15% of the DV), 4 grams of fiber and 3 grams of protein. The ingredients are, Popping Corn, Palm Oil, Salt, Less than 2% natural flavoring.

Newman's Own Organics Pop's Corn Organic Microwave Popcorn (Light Butter Flavored)

Newman's Own Organics Pop's Corn Organic Microwave PopcornPopcorn is my vice. I love it, I have my own popcorn maker and it's a treat I enjoy a few times a week. I like popping my own and adding toppings (like Kernel Season's Caramel Popcorn Seasoning), but every now and then, the convenience of microwave popcorn calls to me. I have some friends who are runners, and they always get the coolest swag bags from the events. One thing they got for this most recent race was a bag of Newman's Own Organics Light Butter Flavored Pop's Corn Organic Microwave Popcorn. Knowing how much I adore popcorn, my friend Karen generously gave me her sample.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 30 grams
Calories: 120
Total Fat: 4 grams, 6%
Saturated Fat: 1.5 grams, 8%
Sodium: 170 mg, 7%
Carbohydrates: 19 grams
Fiber: 4 grams, 16%
Sugar: 0 grams
Protein: 3 grams

I popped up a bag and sampled a handful at first. It definitely didn't taste as artificially buttery as Jolly Time 100 Calorie Healthy Pop Popcorn Minis. But of course, there's partially hydrogenated oils in Jolly Time, whereas this popcorn has just Organic Popcorn, Organic Palm Oil, Salt, Natural Butter Flavor [contains milk], Annatto (for color), and Vitamin E (to preserve freshness). And, it was just as delicious. Not only that, but I didn't feel like I liked that it wasn't overly greasy.

Each serving of Newman's Own Organics Light Butter Flavored Pop's Corn Organic Microwave Popcorn (there are 3-3.5 servings per bag) provides 120 calories, 4 grams of total fat, 1.5 grams of which is saturated, 170 mg of sodium (7% of the daily value), 4 grams of fiber, and 3 grams of protein.

This stuff is usually $27.92 for a 12-pack of 3-serving boxes, on par with other microwave popcorn brands. I really enjoyed this and love the better for you ingredients. This will be replacing Jolly Time! Do you have a favorite brand of popcorn?

Popcorn Indiana Gourmet Kettlecorn (Original)

Popcorn Indiana Gourmet Kettlecorn PopcornPopcorn, Indiana Gourmet Kettlecorn prompted a plethora of thoughts to run through my mind as I stood in the aisle staring at the bright red bag sitting upon the shelf. The intriguing packaging states that this sweet and salty snack food is authentic (whatever that is supposed to mean), all-natural (that's good), packed fresh daily (... aren't all products that come from a busy plant that's open every day?), provides 16g of whole grains per serving (love that), is produced in Popcorn, Indiana (that's cute) and contains no trans fat (I would hope not). After all this thinking, and noticing that there was a two for one sale was going on, I picked up two bags and hoped for the best.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 2 cups (28 grams)
Calories: 130
Total Fat: 5 grams, 8%
Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: 130 mg, 5%
Carbohydrates: 21 grams
Fiber: 2 grams, 8%
Sugar: 6 grams
Protein: 1 gram

The popcorn is about the same shape and size as what you will find in your average bag of microwave popcorn. What sets this corn apart is the subtle sugary coating - the coating is subtle, but the sweetness ... not so much. Some of the pieces have little clusters of sugar, while others have no coating at all; but, for the most part, the coating is only a sheer covering that gives the kernels a glossy caramel color. If you are in the mood for a sweet, crunchy snack, Popcorn Indiana Gourmet Kettlecorn might be just the thing for you. I say "might" because the sweetness can be a bit overwhelming at times.

Each 2 cup serving provides 130 calories from 5 grams of total fat (8% of the daily value), no saturated fat, 130 mg of sodium (5% of the DV), 2 grams of fiber (8% of the DV), 6 grams of sugars and 1 gram of protein. The only ingredients adorning this popcorn are sugar, canola oil and sea salt.

I purchased two 4 ounce bags of Popcorn Indiana Gourmet Kettlecorn Popcorn at CVS for $2.50 (buy one, get one free). If I find them on sale again (I do not see this brand too often), I will grab a bag for the pantry, however, I will let them find me, not the other way around. I would opt more often for Orville Redenbacher's Smart Pop Kettle Korn instead. On another note, there are some flavors that sound extremely intriguing, such as Sweet & Tangy BBQ and Buffalo Cheddar. Have you ever tried Popcorn Indiana products?
