The CLEANSE (guest post).

This post is both awesome & bizarre. It’s the colliding of two worlds (my less than healthy college years & my new Mama-days).  And, for a blogger who writes as if no one is reading, it still surprises me when people from my past pop up in comments/greet me on twitter.

Alison is a friend, an amazing, inspiring runner and, as of recently, a CLEANSER.  Ive invited her here to share her experience & hope she’ll return with an update, too.

I’ve completed 28 marathons in 25 states.

You’d think I’d be stick-thin, right? WRONG! 

And you’d think I’d be really healthy, right?  WRONG again. 

My diet was pretty atrocious.  My food choices included things like Skittles, cheese puffs, and frozen yogurt.

Someone once said to me

I don’t know why you’re not stick-thin with all of the running you do.

Ouch.

Did this hurt me?  Yes.  Did I change?  No.  Until I did The Cleanse. 

What is The Cleanse? 

Cleanse can mean different things to different people.   I chose a 5-day Summer Cleanse through the Watertown Holistic Center  (note: everything is online).

What I liked about it is that you are not consuming *only* liquid. 

On this cleanse you can actually EAT.   It’s also about lifestyle changes, too.  For example, we were instructed to take an Epsom salt bath every night, massage our skin with sesame oil, & cleanse our liver daily with water & lemon or lime.

The cleanse was hard. 

Really hard.  So hard I was tempted to eat just one little Skittle or peanut.  But I never cheated.  Not once.

If I was going to do it, I was going to DO IT.

For five days I followed all of the food instructions:  all I ate was fruit and vegetables.

I was also allowed “add ins” in smoothies (nuts, seeds, hemp protein powder, chia seeds etc) & we had salads most days and quinoa/other whole grains on two days.  It’s not a totally liquid experience.  PHEW!

A big reason the cleanse was hard is that I was surrounded by other people who were not cleansing.

I went to a Red Sox game surrounded by thousands eating ballpark food–but I didn’t budge. I bought water instead.

Did I mention we were supposed to drink 10-15 glasses of water per day??  (Hello, bathroom breaks!)

There were detox symptoms.  Many people in my group got headaches, but luckily I did not.  Instead, I was blessed with things like diarrhea, shakiness, weakness, and lethargy. Fun stuff!

As a runner, it was hard to not have the energy to run–but instead of lying on the couch like I wanted to, I walked. If I didn’t have the energy to run I could at least walk!  And the symptoms went away.

As the cleanse came to a close, I was getting *really* nervous about re-introducing things like sugar, fat, protein, and diary to my diet. Would they make me vomit?  Would I get nauseous?  Would I get diarrhea? 

We were told to slowly re-introduce food groups to our diet.

I started with granola then added things like herbal popcorn and pretzels. By the end of the first day, I was back to a more regular diet.  I eventually went for ice cream, but I walked 3 miles for it.

It’s been 4 days post-cleanse.  What has changed? 

My appetite has been greatly reduced and I don’t crave processed foods.

Seriously.

Did I say I didn’t eat any processed foods?  No!  But I’m not craving them! 

I’ve never been a fan of completely eliminating a food from my diets so I *will* have Skittles, cheese puffs, and frozen yogurt again.  I’m just not sure when.  Or how many I’ll eat.

Time will tell, of course.

For now I’m anxious to get back to running, continue to monitor my appetite and cravings, and integrate some long-term changes into my routine.  Check back with me in a few months to see how I’m doing :-)

The Results of My Shakeology 3-Day Cleanse

I lost of a total of 4-pounds this time around on the Shakeology 3-Day Cleanse. I was expecting a bit more, especially considering my 7-pound loss on the previous Shakeology cleanse, but I also weighed much more during that other cleanse, so it all makes good sense.

But enough about pounds and weight loss. There’s something much more valuable I achieved:

1) I feel like I’m on top of the world! That sluggish feeling is gone. So much energy. So much clarity in my brain (yesss), and I have NOT had the need to be caffeinated in these past 3 days, either. Nope. No coffee required and no withdrawal headaches either.

2) The holiday-eating bloat is gone. I honestly didn’t think I looked that bloated from all the Merry-Christmas-carbohydrates and Hallelujah-excess-pie-slices, but the look of leanness I achieved on the cleanse is proof that, yesss, I was that bloated. Sheesh.

3) It was a discipline-recharge. I love living a disciplined fitness life, because it comes with rewards. But the holiday antics caused me to go lax. Had I not reeled myself in soon, I would’ve been on the track to weight gain and all kinds of future, uncontrolled greediness. The cleanse put me back on track because it requires structure and lots of discipline.

I did it. I am myself again. I’m stepping into 2012 on the right foot.

I’m Down 2.4 Pounds On Day 1 of the Shakeology 3-Day Cleanse

Despite the delicious holiday foodstuffs still lingering in the kitchen, I consider those treats not authorized for access — even those last slices of sweet potato pie ((sigh)).

I’ve had my greedy fill (how ’bout you?), but now it’s over until I come up with the next high quality excuse to chew on cookies and pies. It’s time to get our asses back in gear and end this year on the right stomach foot. Are you with me? What’s your game plan for this week? You gotta have plan.

Yesterday (Dec. 26th) marked Day #1 of my Shakeology 3 Day Cleanse, and it went well. I’m ridding my body of those delectable holiday food-fest toxins, recharging, and doing what needs to be done. booyah!

I’ll post my full cleansing results later this week, but here’s a rundown of my food choices that led to the 2.4 pound loss as of Day #1:

Breakfast: Chocolate Shakeology (made with a banana)Morning Snack: Orange wedgesLunch: Large salad with Italian dressing, baked salmon — a very generous portionAfternoon Snack: Side salad, appleDinner: Greenberry Shakeology (made with strawberries)Evening Snack: Raw sweet potato chips (I just sliced ‘em up) with light sea saltDrinks: Lots of water, 4 cups green tea with Stevia

In general, dropping pounds fast during a cleanse is enough to get a suspicious man’s panties in a bunch as he wonders if that’s truly a safe approach, but when you take a look at my nutritious eats on the Shakeology Cleanse, you can see why it’s genius. Calories are kept low (yet in an acceptable zone), and the food choices are nutrient-packed and smart. I can’t quite explain it, but the combination of Shakeology, salads & green tea is some kinda miracle worker for cleansing power. Plus, I’m NOT sacrificing necessary protein (that salmon was delicious).

Let me make it clear that of those 2.4 pounds lost, not all of it was 100% fat. My colon is being cleansed, toxins are being flushed and I’m releasing extra water weight as well. People I know personally, as well as other random cleansers, have reported 7-10 pounds lost by Day#3. I lost 7 pounds during my last cleanse earlier this year. I can’t wait to post my full results on this current cleanse! And by the way, I am in no way sluggish, tired or hungry. I’m keeping it healthy, baby.
